âtheyâre resilient little things, arenât they?â he muses, his voice thick with drowsiness. which catches you entirely off-guard and has you flinching away, scraping the palm of your hand on a nearby rose bush in the process.
you wince, brows pulled together and lips jutting forward in a pout. nanami feels his heart drop, guilt settling in the pit of his stomach instantaneously.
âfuck,â he curses, a rough edge to his voice, âiâm sorry my love,â as he crouches beside you, cradling your injured hand in his much bigger, warmer palms. itâs not nearly as bad as it seemed at first; a singular scrape stretching across the expanse of your palm. but nanami does his due diligence, wiping away what little blood had appeared with his handkerchief.
âi shouldâve made myââ he stops himself mid-sentence and lowers his gaze, arching a brow over the rounded rim of his glasses. ââŠpresence knownâ he continues, staring pointedly at the tent in your shorts.
warmth creeps up your throat, spreading across the bridge of your nose to either cheek and the tips of your ears as you promptly cross your legs. to which nanami presses his lips together, blowing air through his nostrils.
âthat â â he starts, grimacing, âthat must be uncomfortable,â as he takes a seat on the dirt floor of the greenhouse and pulls you into his lap. and you open your mouth to protest against it; heâs going to ruin his favourite slacks. but he presses a long, thick finger to your lips before you can get a word out.
he clicks his tongue, his tone morphing from the saccharine sweetness that youâre used to. nanami isnât, by any means, harsh with you but his near-silent disapproval is enough to have you curling into yourself.
âiâm sorry,â the words tumble past your glossy lips before you even process them. and nanami responds immediately: âiâm sorry who?â his voice becomes more and more like a rumble as tiredness continues to pull at his sore muscles. but you humour him anyway, âiâm sorry sir,â which earns you a much more content-sounding rumble from the elder man.

Soft laughter and lively chatter drifted in from the dining area, blending with the mouthwatering aroma of roasted chestnuts and spiced mulled wine simmering on the stove. Nico Hischier sat at the edge of the couch, his gaze distant, lost in thought, even though he was surrounded by teammates and friends celebrating the magic of Christmas Eve. It was meant to be a night of joy and merriment, but Nico felt a heavy weight resting on his heart.
He had been invited to this holiday gathering at his teammateâs house, a chance to unwind and embrace the festive spirit, but everything felt overshadowed by the unexpected news you had dropped on him earlier that day.
Youâhis ex-girlfriendâwere pregnant. And the child was his.
He hadnât anticipated running into you tonight. After all, your breakup had been anything but smoothâcomplicated by your hectic schedules and a web of miscommunication that had spiralled into an unavoidable split. Nico had tried to convince himself that it was for the best, that perhaps things had ended for a reason. But now, as he sat there, everything felt completely turned upside down.
His mind spun as he replayed the conversation from earlier, your words echoing in his ears.
You had shown up unannounced, your expression a mix of determination and hesitation. âWe need to talk,â you had said, your voice steady, but he could see the nerves flickering behind your eyes. You had nervously fidgeted with the hem of your coat, your breath coming out in soft puffs in the cold winter air as you stood on his doorstep, a chill running through him even before you spoke the words that would change everything.
And then you told him.
At first, he hadnât known how to reactâshock, confusion, and a flood of emotions crashed over him all at once. This wasnât how things were supposed to go. You werenât meant to be in his life like this anymore. But now, you were carrying his childâa bond that would tie you together forever, no matter how complicated things had become.
Suddenly, the room felt too warm, too loud. The twinkling Christmas lights on the tree seemed to mock his inner turmoil, making him feel even more isolated. He pushed himself off the couch and made his way to the back porch, desperate for fresh air and some space to think.
As he stepped outside, the cold December air hit him like a splash of icy water, snowflakes gently swirling around him, and the crisp scent of pine filled his lungs. For a moment, he stood there in silence, the world around him hushed under a blanket of snow. The ground crunched softly beneath his boots, and the quiet was a stark contrast to the chaos swirling in his mind.
How had it come to this? He had worked so hard to move on after the breakup, convincing himself that whatever you two had was in the past. Yet now, with this news, all the emotions he had tried to bury resurfacedâthe love, the pain, the unresolved feelings he thought he had left behind.
Just then, the creaking sound of the door interrupted his thoughts. He turned to see you standing there, bundled up in your coat, the snow gently dusting your shoulders. You hesitated in the doorway before stepping onto the porch beside him. âCan we talk?â
Nico nodded, his chest tightening as you joined him outside, the cold night air wrapping around you both like a shroud.
âIâm so sorry, NicoâI⊠I didnât mean to drop this on you like that,â you said quietly, your arms wrapped tightly around yourself for warmth. âI just⊠I didnât know what else to do. And you deserved to know the truth.â
He ran a hand through his hair, his breath misting in the frosty air. âI get it. Itâs just⊠a lot to process.â
âI know,â you replied, your voice trembling slightly. âIt wasnât supposed to happen like this. We werenât supposed to be⊠here.â
Nico let out a shaky breath, leaning against the railing as he stared out at the snow-covered garden. âI thought we had moved on. But now, I donât know what to think.â
You looked down, snowflakes landing softly in your hair like little whispers. âI donât know what to think either. Iâm scared, Nico. I really donât want to mess up your life⊠but⊠I donât want to push you away either. And honestly, I guess⊠I just donât want to be aloneâŠâ
His heart ached at the vulnerability in your voice, the same vulnerability he had once held so close. The memories of your shared dreams and plans, now feeling distant and nearly out of reach, made his chest tighten. âHey, you donât have to go through this alone. Iâm here. For you, and for the baby.â
The words slipped out before he could second-guess himself, but as soon as they left his mouth, he knew they were true. He couldnât just walk away from thisâwalk away from you. Even after everything that had happened, there was still a part of him that caredâmore than he wanted to admit.
Tears glistened in your eyes as you met his gaze, and his heart twisted at the sight. âAre you sure? We didnât exactly end things on the best terms.â
âI know,â he said softly, stepping closer and reaching out to brush a stray snowflake from your cheek. âBut that doesnât change the fact that this is happening. And it doesnât change the fact that I stillââ He hesitated, the words momentarily caught in his throat, but he forced himself to continue. âThat I still care about you.â
The air between you felt heavy, charged with emotions neither of you had expected to face tonight. You looked up at him, eyes filled with uncertainty, but beneath that uncertainty was something else tooâa glimmer of hope.
âI care about you too.â
âWe donât have to figure everything out right now,â he said gently, his voice low and steady. âBut weâre in this together. Iâm not going anywhere.â
For the first time in what felt like forever, you smiledâa small, tentative smile that broke through the tension like sunlight piercing through clouds. âThank you,â you whispered, your voice thick with emotion.
Nico took a deep breath, his heart still racing, but for the first time that night, he felt a sense of calm wash over him. Things were complicated, messy even, but somehow, he knew that you could make it work. There was still love hereâburied beneath all the hurt and confusion, but strong enough to guide you both through whatever lay ahead.
As the snow continued to fall softly around you, Nico reached out, taking your hand in his. And in that quiet moment, standing together under the winter sky, he realised that this Christmas might not have been what he had expectedâbut it could still be the start of something new, something worth fighting for.
