while ted knew it was probably invasive of him, ever since he heard that his assistant coach was a famous retired soccer player, his intrigue was piqued. he ended up doing a google search on the other, learning a few things about the other’s career before closing his browser down. all he needed to know was what he was going to learn throughout them spending time together. a bright smile was fixed on ted’s lips as he headed into the athletic office, two frozen coffee drinks in hand. β€œhey coach!” he greeted the moment he entered the shared space. β€œi brought you a lil somethin’ that will help with those first day jitters. it’s a caramel frappe with extra whipped cream and caramel drizzle, the sugar rush will knock anythin’ out.” he chuckled as he placed the cup on the other’s desk. β€œoh, i also brought you this!” he set his own drink down before rummaging through his bag to pull out a book: a wrinkle in time. one of his absolute favorites. β€œjust a little gift for you.” he leaned against his desk as he scanned the other over. β€œoh, i’m ted... by the way. but i’m sure you’ve already placed that together, you’re a sharp guy.”

from the way that his name was said and the way the other seemed carefree when it came to using profanities in front of someone he just met, ted had a feeling he was in for quite the day. although it wasn’t necessarily something that bothered him, he was well-accustomed to people who needed time when it came to warming up to his overwhelming personality. β€œwell, even if you don’t get first-day jitters it’ll be there for you. it’s mighty tasty, but you don’t gotta just take my word for it.” he encouraged, hoping that the other would change his mind and allow himself the chance to enjoy the frozen drink. he watched as roy stared down at the book that he had brought the other as a gift, a smile spreading across his lips. β€œit’s one of my favorite books. you kind of strike me as the meg murry type, an unlikely hero that has been dealt a tough hand. i might be wrong on that, but it’s an enjoyable book with a lot of good lessons in it.” he rambled. β€œa body is only as strong as the mind is, that’s something i always say to the kids i’ve coached. i think that should apply to the coaches as well.”
