Clarification: Generative AI does not equal all AI
💭 "Artificial Intelligence"
AI is machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and more that I'm not smart enough to know. It can be extremely useful in many different fields and technologies. One of my information & emergency management courses described the usage of AI as being a "human centaur". Part human part machine; meaning AI can assist in all the things we already do and supplement our work by doing what we can't.
💭 Examples of AI Benefits
AI can help advance things in all sorts of fields, here are some examples:
Emergency Healthcare & Disaster Risk X
Disaster Response X
Crisis Resilience Management X
Medical Imaging Technology X
Commercial Flying X
Air Traffic Control X
Railroad Transportation X
Ship Transportation X
Geology X
Water Conservation X
Can AI technology be used maliciously? Yeh. Thats a matter of developing ethics and working to teach people how to see red flags just like people see red flags in already existing technology.
AI isn't evil. Its not the insane sentient shit that wants to kill us in movies. And it is not synonymous with generative AI.
💭 Generative AI
Generative AI does use these technologies, but it uses them unethically. Its scraps data from all art, all writing, all videos, all games, all audio anything it's developers give it access to WITHOUT PERMISSION, which is basically free reign over the internet. Sometimes with certain restrictions, often generative AI engineers—who CAN choose to exclude things—may exclude extremist sites or explicit materials usually using black lists.
AI can create images of real individuals without permission, including revenge porn. Create music using someones voice without their permission and then sell that music. It can spread disinformation faster than it can be fact checked, and create false evidence that our court systems are not ready to handle.
AI bros eat it up without question: "it makes art more accessible" , "it'll make entertainment production cheaper" , "its the future, evolve!!!"
💭 AI is not similar to human thinking
When faced with the argument "a human didn't make it" the come back is "AI learns based on already existing information, which is exactly what humans do when producing art! We ALSO learn from others and see thousands of other artworks"
Lets make something clear: generative AI isn't making anything original. It is true that human beings process all the information we come across. We observe that information, learn from it, process it then ADD our own understanding of the world, our unique lived experiences. Through that information collection, understanding, and our own personalities we then create new original things.
💭 Generative AI doesn't create things: it mimics things
Take an analogy:
Consider an infant unable to talk but old enough to engage with their caregivers, some point in between 6-8 months old.
Mom: a bird flaps its wings to fly!!! *makes a flapping motion with arm and hands*
Infant: *giggles and makes a flapping motion with arms and hands*
The infant does not understand what a bird is, what wings are, or the concept of flight. But she still fully mimicked the flapping of the hands and arms because her mother did it first to show her. She doesn't cognitively understand what on earth any of it means, but she was still able to do it.
In the same way, generative AI is the infant that copies what humans have done— mimicry. Without understanding anything about the works it has stolen.
Its not original, it doesn't have a world view, it doesn't understand emotions that go into the different work it is stealing, it's creations have no meaning, it doesn't have any motivation to create things it only does so because it was told to.
Why read a book someone isn't even bothered to write?

I'm curious-- how would you argue transmedicalist ideology greater aligns with socialism?
I have already recorded and am in the process of editing a video about this, but let me give a basic rundown.
In a capitalist medical system, priority is established through who is able to pay. The better products, the lower waiting lists. All of that is dictated by time of purchase which is heavily influenced by your financial status.
In a socialist medical system, people are assessed and prioritized based upon need. The healthcare is public, and finances aren't an issue. Resources become directly tied to availability. In this scenario, we have a lot of tucutes in line for hrt in pair with actually trans people. (Dysphoric ones). In order for the state to manage resources like hormones, surgeons, and binders/prosthetics, they need to establish a priority system. Well, how do we do that? The only way is to identify high-risk patients. Those would be, in every situation, those who are Dysphoric. Tucutes would not like this system, and would prefer a free market system. Where they can get anything they want for any reason, and be able to throw money at it until it works.
Tucutes would hate any sort of rational priority system, but the issue with that is in a socialist medical system, you have to find a way to manage resources other than the customers ability to pay.
To further this, tucutes have an individualist mindset. "I as an individual am more important than the needs of others" which is a one for one reflection of capitalist ideas. Wheras transmedicalists carry the mindset of "The community as a whole is more important than individual wants that aren't necessary for a happy life." which is reflective of a socialist mindset.
The fact of the matter is, any system that prioritizes minimizing human suffering over profits and self gratification is anti-capitalist by nature. Any medical system designed by transmedicalists would be this way.

Erin In The Morning:
On Friday, numerous conservative accounts and news sources promoted headlines that the "American College of Pediatricians" had issued a statement against transgender care. A video accompanied the announcement featuring Dr. Jill Simons, who, wearing a white lab coat, states that there must be an end to "social affirmation, puberty blockers, and cross-sex hormones" for transgender youth. Despite the official-looking attire and name, the organization's name serves to mislead observers into thinking they are the much larger American Academy of Pediatrics, which represents tens of thousands of pediatricians. In reality, the ACP is a hyper-conservative Christian group of doctors created in 2002 to oppose gay parenting. In the announcement released on Friday, Simons called for an end to social transition and gender-affirming care for transgender youth. One video, which went viral, begins with a statement that the organization has released a "declaration" authored by the American College of Pediatricians, along with "hundreds of doctors and healthcare workers," opposing transgender care. It references the highly-politicized Cass Review from the United Kingdom, whose author controversially blames pornography for being transgender, as well as the Climategate-style leak of the “WPATH Files” to support the statement.
The video, which was viewed over 51 million times on Twitter, cuts off just before the next speaker is introduced: Dr. Andre Van Mol, who represents the Christian Medical and Dental Associations. Van Mol serves on the board of the Bethel Church of Redding, which made headlines in 2019 for attempting to pray a dead child back to life. He is followed by representatives from several other Christian medical organizations that also support banning transgender care. The website promoted at the event lists signatories to the statement, including the Catholic Medical Association, Genspect, The National Catholic Bioethics Center, the Family Research Council, and the Discovery Institute, an organization that promotes intelligent design over evolution in schools.
The American College of Pediatricians has been hugely influential in the promotion of anti-trans policy in the United States, relying in part to its misleading name. Members of the organization testify in state houses and courtrooms across the United States, misleading legislators into thinking they are the much larger American Academy of Pediatrics, the professional society that represents 67,000 pediatricians in the United States. In 2023, the organization inadvertently left a Google Drive public, leading to the leak of a massive trove of files showing their extremist roots. According to these documents, the group received significant donations from the Alliance Defending Freedom, a right-wing organization that has played a large role in the passage and defense of anti-LGBTQ+ laws in the United States. It also received free video production from Family Watch International, a group of Christian fundamentalists opposing homosexuality, birth control, abortion, and sex education. The American College of Pediatricians itself has been listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center since 2012, when the group’s leader stated that “homosexuality poses a danger to children” and that the group was “essentially a Judeo-Christian values organization.”
[...] Despite the widespread misinformation, every major medical organization in the United States supports gender-affirming care. In February, the American Psychological Association, the largest psychological association in the world, released a policy resolution stating that gender-affirming care is medically necessary and saves lives. The American Academy of Pediatricscurrently recommends that transgender youth have access to gender-affirming care tailored to their unique needs. The Advocates for Trans Equality maintains a list of over 30 of the largest U.S.-based medical organizations that support transgender care, including the Endocrine Society, the Pediatric Endocrine Society, the American Public Health Association, and the American Medical Association.
Anti-trans extremists such as X owner Elon Musk and numerous right-wing and anti-trans pundits and websites are touting a video from American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds) Dr. Jill Simons issuing a statement opposing gender-affirming care for trans children.
In contrast to radical right-wing whacko group ACPeds, mainstream medical organizations support gender-affirming care as a medically necessary.
ACPeds is a radical right-wing medical group that is opposed to abortion, LGBTQ+ rights, and transgender rights, and has trafficked in COVID denialism and anti-vaxxer extremism.

Women's Lunch Place
The Women’s Lunch Place is a non-profit organization in New England that provides healthy meals, resources, and support to women experiencing homelessness or poverty. This nonprofit provides a safe space for women to find companionship they may lack in the outside world and access services to help them in challenging times. This organization provides access to healthcare and support groups in hopes of making a difference to the women who need it. This organization is open Monday-Saturday and serves both breakfast and lunch to women in a hard place while also providing toiletries, undergarments, and feminine hygiene products, as well as other necessities. They also provide wellness programs for women suffering from substance abuse and mental health support to help these women turn their lives around for the better. The organization also offers free medical services on-site for women who can’t afford the help they need.  The Women's Lunch Place is active on social media and you can find them on Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. For small businesses or organizations like this vanity metrics are important to help attract donors, volunteers, and other supporters. On Instagram, we can see they’ve gained an impressive following of 4,472, and this may show that this organization has more influence however other more meaningful metrics need to balance this out. Looking at their Instagram we can see that although they have over 4000 followers most posts do not get over 100 likes with some resting at 30-50 likes. This reflects less engagement with content and shows their audience is not actively interacting with what they post. This also indicates that their followers might not genuinely be interested or that the content is not resonating well with them. On Facebook, we can see this organization has about 5.6k followers with many links to fundraisers this non-profit organization is supporting. On Facebook, most videos posted have about 350-600 views however very few likes and shares. However, we also know that on Facebook a view can account for only watching 3 seconds of a video and this highlights that the content posted isn’t compelling enough for the audience to engage in. And when referring to their YouTube we can see a clear lack of support with only 57 subscribers. Their latest video was about 5 months ago however most videos have views from 250-1.8k. When talking about YouTube and vanity metrics we can see that a view on YouTube accounts for watching at least 30 seconds of the video and most videos posted span from 1 minute to an hour. This shows how some videos do speak to the audience, however, shows a lack of consistency in posting and supporting their YouTube channel. As other social media have thousands of followers yet their YouTube channel has under 100 we can see a lack of effort in spreading their brand across multiple platforms.  Vanity metrics are an important aspect of social media as they highlight the difference between appearance and insight. To show improvement in vanity metrics this nonprofit organization could try to create more engaging content by sharing more stories of the women who visit that could resonate with their audience. This would also show them who they're helping by supporting or donating to them. They could also try harder with the quality of their videos or posts as this is what appeals to an audience and what they judge you on. It is also important to interact with followers whether this be responding to comments or answering questions as this encourages discussion and helps to build a community. As this nonprofit organization is about helping women and giving them a safe space, it is very important to build a community-like atmosphere. And most of all they must continue to post consistently to keep followers engaged and to not leave them in the dark about what is happening with the organization. No follower will want to donate and support if they are left wondering what is happening for months at a time.

The Rise of Augmented Reality in Everyday Life
Augmented Reality (AR) is a transformative technology that superimposes digital information onto the real world, enhancing our perception of reality. Unlike Virtual Reality (VR), which creates an entirely immersive virtual environment, AR overlays digital elements—such as images, sounds, or text—onto our physical surroundings using devices like smartphones, tablets, or AR glasses.
Tumblr media
Present-day Uses of AR Augmented reality (AR) is altering how we interact with technology and the world around us by making substantial breakthroughs across multiple fields.
Retail: AR is being used by retailers to improve the in-store experience. Customers may see how makeup, accessories, and clothing will appear on them without having to visit a store by using virtual try-on apps. One example is the AR app from IKEA, which allows users to see how furniture would fit and appear in their houses.
Healthcare: AR is being used in healthcare to help with medical training and complicated procedures. During procedures, surgeons can access real-time data and 3D organ renderings with AR glasses, which will increase accuracy and improve results.
Education: By increasing interaction and engagement, augmented reality is revolutionizing the way people learn. By allowing students to investigate 3D replicas of historical sites, the solar system, or anatomical structures, they may make abstract ideas come to life.
Entertainment: AR has been warmly welcomed by the entertainment sector. Augmented reality (AR) is giving consumers new experiences in everything from immersive movie advertising to apps like Pokémon Go that mix virtual characters with actual locales.
Tumblr media
Improving Social Media and Mobile App User Experiences AR features are being added to mobile apps and social media platforms more often to draw consumers in. AR filters are a feature of Instagram and Snapchat that enhance images and videos with fun, animated effects, encouraging user creativity and interaction. With the use of augmented reality (AR) apps like Google Lens, users can quickly get information about items, landmarks, and other subjects by pointing the camera of their phone at objects.
Effects on Marketing and Advertising Plans Through the creation of immersive, interactive campaigns that grab consumers' attention, augmented reality is transforming marketing and advertising. Through gamified marketing, interactive advertisements, and virtual product demos, brands are utilizing augmented reality to increase engagement and conversion. For instance, Pepsi's augmented reality bus stop campaign left a lasting impression by delighting onlookers with lifelike digital animations.
Tumblr media
Prospects & Development Trends for AR in the Future The development of augmented reality (AR) is expected to continue due to ongoing technological developments. AR experiences will be improved, becoming more smooth and accessible with advancements in AR glasses, computing power, and AI integration. We may anticipate that augmented reality (AR) will revolutionize a number of businesses and how we communicate with one another.
Tumblr media
Conclution The emergence of augmented reality is evidence of the infinite applications of technology. AR is changing our daily experiences in a variety of ways, from improving healthcare and retail to transforming education and entertainment. As augmented reality develops, it promises to usher in a day where the virtual and real worlds coexist peacefully, presenting countless chances for creativity and interaction.

The Impact of Tuition Fees on University Externalities and Public Goods: A Comparative Analysis of the United States and China
Wenxin Lyu
Student ID:79048292.
The role of tuition in shaping university-generated externalities and public goods is a topic that has received much attention, especially when comparing different education models such as those in the United States and China. Tuition not only affects access to higher education but also has broader economic and social implications. This paper explores how tuition affects positive and negative externalities and the provision of public goods at universities in the U.S. and China, providing insights into the social impact of these educational giants.
Tuition is an important source of revenue for universities, sponsored operations, research, and scholarships. In the U.S., high tuition combined with a robust financial aid system places greater emphasis on a market-driven approach to private investment in higher education. In contrast, Chinese universities, which are primarily government-funded, charge relatively low tuition, reflecting a model that views higher education more as a public service. Chinese students can choose their preferred schools more freely than their U.S. counterparts and have less student loan burden.
Positive Externalities and Public Goods Positive externalities occur when an activity benefits a third party not directly involved. In higher education, these externalities can be significant.
In the U.S., high tuition may foster a competitive environment by selecting only the highest-achieving students or those from wealthy families. This high-competition, high-standard model can push universities to excel in research and innovation, leading to new technologies, processes, and knowledge that benefit society, such as medical breakthroughs improving healthcare globally.
In China, the government subsidizes tuition, making education more accessible. This can raise the overall education level, producing a more educated workforce that increases productivity, social mobility, economic growth, and stability – classic positive externalities.
Negative Externalities Negative externalities occur when an activity adversely affects a third party.
The highly competitive U.S. environment has notable downsides. High tuition and stringent criteria can lead to unequal educational opportunities, restricting opportunities for talented but underprivileged students. High tuition also increases debt burdens, causing long-term financial stress. The high-pressure environment may negatively impact students' mental health and promote an overly competitive mindset at the expense of well-being.
While the U.S. system promotes innovation through competition, it introduces negative externalities regarding equity, financial burden, and mental health that require policy adjustments to maintain competitiveness while lowering barriers and reducing detrimental effects.
In China, the intense competition for the make-or-break university entrance exam (gaokao) may seriously affect mental health, exacerbate inequality, and lead to social tensions – negative externalities not reflected in education costs.
In summary, both the high-tuition, market-driven U.S. model and the low-tuition, centralized Chinese approach produce notable positive and negative externalities that shape their educational and socioeconomic impacts in distinct ways.

My parents are moving and it's the most disastrous series of unforced errors ever.
For context, my grandparents retired in the late 80s / early 90s with a very healthy nest egg, having made their careers and retired at the peak of American Capitalism. Between Social Security, military pension, and pensions from their careers, they were made for life.
They lived in the middle of nowhere playing pretend farmer/rancher/cowboy, far away from any medical resources or modern conveniences. There was a small grocery store and hardware store nearby, but anything else was 30-40 minutes away from their stupid little farmhouse. Hospital? Doctors? 45 minutes away minimum, usually an hour or more once traffic was factored in.
As they got older, it was increasingly difficult for them to live independently because of how far removed from everything they were. Independence came with ever-increasing costs: Home healthcare visits, house cleaning services, and grounds keeping services (among others) all paid for out of their copious pensions. Eventually it became a combination of all of those things plus my mother and aunt visiting them multiple times a week (over an hour drive just to get there) to make sure all of their needs were being met.
Even I eventually got roped into helping them maintain their faux independence. I tried to convince them to move back to civilization, but it was more important to them to maintain their fake farmer/rancher/cowboy lifestyle. In the end, they had to be forced into a nursing home pretty much against their will. It was not a fun period and I'm not keen to revisit it.
My parents retired recently. They will be trying to make ends meet on Social Security plus whatever remains in their 401Ks. Their 401Ks are a disaster because they made no attempt to manage them until right before they retired, at which point it was too late to make any changes that might affect the outcome. But that didn't matter because they wanted to retire anyways.
They have a home in the city, 15-25 minutes away from their doctors and surrounded by hospitals, standalone ERs, and urgent care clinics. There are grocery stores, hardware stores, and every conceivable kind of specialty shop within a stone's throw. To my knowledge, until very recently their plan was to live in their current home until they died. They hadn't really settled on what they would do with my grandparents' home. My siblings and I encouraged them to sell it and put the money towards their retirement. My parents were not committed to the idea. Then the pandemic came. Almost overnight, it seems, they changed into radically different people.
While my dad is fairly outgoing, my mother has always been borderline agoraphobic. As far as I know she has no friends. The closest thing she has to a friend besides my dad (with whom she has nothing in common) and my aunt (who at best loathes her) is me. Did I mention my mother is a hoarder?
My mother LOVED quarantine. She was content to sit at home, watch television or read books, work from home, and then text me nonstop all day long (to the point that it was impacting my productivity at work and making me lose sleep). She still texts me nonstop.
She retired in the middle of the pandemic and now had even more free time; time she spent reading regurgitated reddit threads from those low-effort BuzzFeed knockoffs, writing fanfiction, and watching hours-upon-hours of television.
My dad did not like quarantine nearly as much, but he loved that he was incentivized to watch endless hours of television, play video games, and play on his iPad; activities he already enjoys.
I cannot overstate just how much television my parents watch. We're talking easily 14-16 hours each day, usually binge watching a single show or alternating between two different shows, and at most breaking for an hour to go buy lunch (which they eat in front of the TV) or maybe go to a doctor's appointment.
For the last 5 years, their daily TV consumption consists of Yellowstone, those HGTV home renovation shows (in particular Home Town), the storage unit auction show, and those travel channel shows that are just extended commercials for cruise lines.
All of a sudden their retirement plans changed. Now they want to move into my grandparents' old house in the countryside and play pretend farmer/rancher/cowboy AND also pretend home renovator AND go on a series of cruises they can't afford. It's like watching them toss their meager life savings into a burning dumpster.
I reminded them of how difficult it was for our grandparents to remain independent as they got older. "We're still young," they said.
I reminded them that our grandparents' independence came with high costs that they themselves will be unable to afford. "Don't worry about that now," they said.
I reminded them of how much time and energy they spent checking in on our grandparents and how me and my siblings don't have (and can't really foresee) the same standard of living that even my parents enjoyed. "You'll love visiting us in the country. We have so many plans for the house!" they said.
They've spent the better part of 18 months burning through their savings so they can live out the shows they see on TV. They've paid for a complete home makeover for my grandparents' stupid house, which included:
A costly asbestos abatement
All new appliances
Rewiring the house
Reupholstering much of the furniture in my grandparent's home plus more than a few pieces from their house in the city
Buying new furniture to replace the pieces they didn't want from either home
$20k for a top-of-the-line natural-gas powered generator (one strong enough to power a small restaurant) so they never have to worry about power outages
Art restoration for almost every painting in their current home plus a number of paintings my grandparents had
And they even renovated my grandparents' two barns!
By the way, they largely didn't clean out my grandparents' house, they just paid the contractor to dump everything in the barns after they were renovated.
They decided on March 1st that they want to move out completely by the end of March, which has forced my siblings and I to spend all of our available time helping them shovel out 30 years worth of my mother's compulsive hoarding. It never quite reached the point of the Collyer Brothers, but it did get to a point that our bedrooms were only nominally ours. We lost all functionality of the combination dining room / rec room around 2005. After 2018, neither of my siblings' bedrooms were even accessible. They want to move by April Fools Day.
I'm still cleaning out "my" room (only the upper layers of the piles of hoard were ever mine). I learned recently that my bedroom actually has a closet. I lived in that room for over 20 years thinking I never had a closet. I decided last night that I won't take anything. This will upset my mother. She envisioned "cleaning my room" as "taking everything somewhere else so she doesn't have to see me throw away anything". She has fought me on every item I have thrown away. I don't care about her feelings on the subject anymore.
She won't stop texting me about how much fun we're all going to have visiting them in the country, or how I need to hurry up and finish cleaning out "my" bedroom, or that I should be a good son and make time to help them go through everything they shoved into the barns. Maybe I should even take some of it (all of it preferably) because they won't have room for all of it once their stuff is moved in. Can't I help? Pretty please?
They've become completely unmoored from reality. My dad will just randomly force strangers at the grocery store to swipe through before and after pictures of their reupholstered furniture. My mother is talking in various fake accents (from her best approximation of "British" to Antebellum Southern drawl to 1940s Mid-Atlantic to that generic fake accent all modern country musicians use). They call me at all times of day. They don't care that I'm working or trying to sleep because I have work the next day. My needs don't matter anymore, only their wants matter.
EDIT: While I was typing this my dad sent me a before/after picture of a bookshelf they had restored.
When it became evident that I should probably wear a respirator and gloves to handle anything in the lower levels of my mother's hoard, she became upset. "It's not that bad! You're overreacting!" she said. Their home is a biohazard. They will never find a buyer for their home. the exterior is okay, but inside is wrecked beyond your wildest imagination. They are still ticked at my siblings and I because none of us could afford to buy their home nor did we express any interest in buying it at a significant discount. Whomever they convince to buy the home will need to gut it.
I'm honestly done with them. I don't think this personality shift is temporary. I just think it's who they are now. They've become selfish, shortsighted, incredibly inconsiderate, and unfathomably weird. Nothing I say has made a difference. I did everything I could to convince them they were making a mistake. I live with the existential dread that they are banking on me and my siblings helping them solve their problems when it inevitably hits the fan. Screw that! Luckily I live in a state without filial responsibility laws.
I will not be rescuing them and neither will my siblings. I will not be visiting them or sacrificing my time and energy when they could have just sold that stupid farmhouse and put the proceeds towards saving for their advanced age. For reasons I will never understand, it is more important that they get to play the characters they see on TV than it is to plan for a future when they are old and infirm. I get it, one is fun and one is not. Surely they can see that we're at the same age they were when they became parents. They had a house, two new-ish cars, & young kids. Meanwhile we live in miserable shoebox apartments, with cars that have 200,000+ miles on the odometer, and no path to home ownership in the foreseeable future.
But go on ahead. Go play Yellowstone. Go play Home Town. I hope whatever fleeting happiness they squeeze from their experience can fill the miserable void in their lives. I don't have the gas money to drive 100 miles round-trip to visit them every week vs the 40 miles round-trip I make now. They are making it harder and harder for me to see them. Once they are out of sight, they will be out of mind. They just don't realize it yet.
