         HUMANS  HAD  BEEN  THE  CAUSE  of  her  misery,  the  destruction  of  her  homeland  and  the  death  of  her  loved  ones  and  yet  why  had  it  been  when  this  particular  human  made  such  promises  to  her,  the  unicorn  had  been  tempted  to  buy  into  his  every  word  and  follow  him  until  the  very  end.  

         Magical  powers  had  gifted  her  the  ability  to  tell  truth  from  lies  but  it  did  little  to  help  her  decipher  why  he  would  risk  so  much  to  keep  her  safe.  Wouldn’t  it  be  more  beneficial  for  him  to  turn  her  in?  A  rare  mythical  being  —  the  last  of  her  kind;  surely  he  would  be  able  to  trade  her  in  for  treasures  and  bounties  beyond  his  wildest  dreams,  but  he  had  little  care  for  riches,  hadn’t  he?  

         A  family...  

         That’s  what  he  had  claimed  to  want.

         Even  so..  

         There’s  silence  as  the  former  queen  contemplates  his  every  word  and  gesture.  None  of  her  royal  education  had  prepared  her  on  how  to  deal  with  a  man  like  Edward  Newgate,  rather  he  had  been  unlike  any  other  she’d  ever  known.  

         ❝You  foolish  man...  you  said  you  wanted  a  family..❞  she  begins.  ❝if  the  government..  if  anyone,  were  to  find  out  you’re  harboring  the  last  unicorn  alive  —  you  would  put  your  entire  family  at  risk...  would  you  really  do  that?❞  for  her?

a bowl is slid across wooden planks and between the bars confining the ship's unfortunate prisoner. ❛❛ .. .you're still looking worse for wear every time I see you— eat up. ❜❜ he speaks, himself taking his own advice as he plops his rear before her cell, mouth stuffed with his own supper tonight. The chaos above was naught but muffled nonsense to the two below deck, and he much preferred it that way.

         EVERYTHING  SHE  CARED  FOR  OR  HAS  EVER  KNOWN  was  gone  —  her  kingdom,  her  friends,  her  family  while  she  herself,  had  been  reduced  from  a  respected  QUEEN  to  a  prisoner  tossed  aside.

         Through  it  all,  the  only  comfort  she  finds  is  in  the  company  of  a  man  she  can’t  quite  decipher  yet  he  keeps  coming  back  to  her  cell  nonetheless,  despite  the  cold  shoulder  she  shows  him  often  while  other  times  she  finds  her  defenses  shattering  beyond  her  control  in  his  presence.  

         The  gaze  of  sky  blue  hues  lift  momentarily  to  her  visitor,  full  of  doubt  and  questions  before  retreating  yet  again.  She  hugs  her  knees  tighter  against  her  chest,  curling  in  the  corner  of  her  cell.  She  wants  to  claim  she’s  not  hungry  but  she  can’t  lie,  physically  incapable  of  doing  so,  hence  she  finally  caves  and  dares  come  closer  to  where  he  sat  right  outside  the  bars  confining  her.

         ❝  Thank  you..  ❞  is  the  only  response  she  can  finally  manage  as  she  reaches  for  her  bowl,  opting  to  trust  him  this  time,  as  the  unicorn  can  still,  despite  their  predicament  sense  he  is  pure  of  heart.
