tastes like autumn - st fic

Written for Day 15 of @steddie-spooktober - prompt: baking - wc: 1.7k - cw: some cussing

Autumn has painted Hawkins in hues of orange and red, trees dropping their leaves any time the wind blows. It’s cold enough that Steve’s taken to only wearing his sweaters instead of his favorite polos. He’s got his own place now and he’s even more grateful for it this winter when he remembers how awful it was to prepare the pool for the winter. Nothing worse than deep cleaning a pool when it’s cold and windy outside. His place isn’t big by any means, a tiny apartment above one of the shops downtown, but it does the job. It’s got one bedroom, a kitchen, and a massive living/dining room. 

The big living room was a big selling point when he moved in, wanting to have enough space for everyone to come over for a movie night or more recently, a D&D session. When it’s just him he likes to open all the curtains and windows to let the sounds from outside to filter in, mostly cars driving past but sometimes he’ll catch snippets of the conversations of people walking below. Sometimes Robin will join him on the couch in front of the window so they can people watch and make up lives for everyone they see. 

Today’s a quiet one though, one where he doesn’t have any work and no one’s planned on coming over. Which means Steve gets to bake. After the last and final round with the Upside Down, he’d finally been open to going to therapy. As soon as he’d agreed, Owens had given his information to Vanessa, who ended up being a good match and now they meet once a month. It’d been a long process, first having to meet up every week to catch her up with his personal involvement with the Upside Down. Soon it turned into her helping him with more mundane things, like why he hates the sound of a completely quiet house. Didn’t take long for her to suggest getting out of the Harrington House and into his own space. 

Now on quiet days Steve isn’t haunted by the memory of his parents disapproval when he moves room to room. No, now he gets to focus on things that he actually enjoys doing. One of which happens to be baking. He’s been looking forward to making this recipe from a magazine since he found it, but Eddie’s been staying over the last few days and he wants it to be a surprise. Plus, he knows better than to think Eddie won’t distract him from making sure he doesn’t burn the loaf by accident.

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread stares at him from the torn magazine page and Steve smiles before pulling out the ingredients. There’s a radio sitting on his kitchen counter that he reaches over to click on, letting the sounds of Blondie fill the room. Since no one’s here but him, he shimmies his shoulders as he washes his hands, singing along as she belts about calling her anytime. 

It’s easy to sink into the methodic motions of baking. Dry ingredients get placed in his orange mixing bowl, clouds of dust and cinnamon causing him to sneeze and fan at the air before continuing. Steve hasn’t gotten around to buying an electric mixer yet, instead relying on his only whisk or his hands if the dough is particularly thick. 

Today he opts for hand mixing, rolling the sleeves of his yellow sweater up before reaching in. The pumpkin puree is sticky and thick but the eggs make everything feel slimy so he pulls his hands out almost as soon as he reaches in. Sometimes the feeling of dough in his hands makes him think of urging Eddie’s heart to start beating, reminds him of how he nearly dropped the metalhead multiple times on the way to the gate, blood making him almost slip out of Steve’s faltering grasp. A quick shake of his head and Steve tunes back into the radio, a song by Queen now filling his kitchen instead. He leans against the counter for a second, counting his inhales and exhales before trying again. This time Steve reaches in and doesn’t have to pull his hands out until he goes to add the chocolate chips. Normally the recipe calls for semi-sweet chips, but Steve’s gotten dark chocolate since those are Eddie’s favorite.

The house smells like pumpkin, cinnamon, and chocolate. It brings a small smile to Steve’s face as he sits in the living room waiting for the loaf to cool. He’s feeling pretty confident so far, it didn’t rise too far out of the pan and when he stuck a fork in it the prongs came out clean. After the Biscuit Incident, Steve only tests out new recipes alone. No reason to give the party any more reasons to rag on him since they all act like glorified younger siblings anyway, knowing just the right buttons to push to get him riled up. Once he knows the best way to make a recipe, that’s when they’re offered to the party – soft cookies and moist cakes that melt just right in your mouth when you take a bite. All the dishes are next to the sink drying when he steps into the kitchen again. 

Steve edges a butter knife around the edges of the pan, urging the loaf away from the edges in hopes that it’ll come out of the pan easily. He places a plate on top of the loaf and flips the pan; luckily when he lifts it, the pan is empty and the loaf is resting in the center of the plate. Some of the chocolate chips have left melted streaks in the pan and he runs a slow finger through one of the trails for a taste.

“Stevie?” Eddie’s voice startles him and the pan in his hand finds its way to the floor with a loud clatter. “You okay?” Hurried footsteps bring Eddie to the doorframe of the kitchen, eyes wide as he takes in the scene: pan on the ground and Steve clutching a hand to his chest like he’s had a heart attack. He’s managed to get one shoe off but the other sits untied in his haste to identify the noise. “Glad to see your heart’s working.” It’s a joke that Steve’s heard Wayne make when he spooks Eddie coming around the corner of the trailer, it’s a way to let the other person catch their breath when they’ve just been scared. Steve takes the break for what it is and shakes his head fondly.

“Yeah, didn’t need you test it for me.” Steve fights back his own grin when Eddie smiles and winks at him, stepping forward to grab the pan from the floor. With the pan resting in the sink, Eddie kicks off his other shoe and then leans into Steve’s space. Chapped lips press against his and Steve leans in for another kiss before Eddie can pull away completely. When they do part, Steve can feel the grin stretching across his face. It’s nice having his own space that people can drop by unexpectedly but Eddie is supposed to be busy today.

“What happened to practice?” Eddie’s more focused on the plate behind Steve, already taking a step towards the counter to investigate. “Excuse me.” Brown eyes cut to Steve’s when Eddie registers the slightly bitchy tone Steve’s decided on. Steve’s smile gives away that he doesn’t really mean anything by it, just trying to get his boyfriend’s attention. Plus, there’s no way he’s going to let Eddie try it before he makes sure it actually came out correctly. 

“Gareth’s sister got sick, so he was stuck with baby sitting duty. What’d you make?” Again, Steve’s lost his boyfriend’s attention, Eddie going as far as to reach towards Steve’s loaf with a ringed finger.

“Hey! Don’t poke it. I made something new, which means-”

“Which means I don’t get to taste it until you do, yeah, yeah. Let’s cut a piece.” It’s hard pretending to be frustrated when Eddie knows him so well. With an eye roll and a playful huff Steve bumps Eddie’s hip with his before grabbing his butter knife again. 

“Go put your shoes up, then if it’s good you can have a slice.” It’s like watching Wile Coyote run off a cliff with how quickly Eddie swoops his battered Reebok up and darts into the living room. The butter knife passes through easily and a small trail of steam rises from inside the loaf. Steve can tell he put in too many chocolate chips already, the inside mostly dark instead of dotted like he expected; he figures Eddie won’t mind it either way. Gently, Steve tears off the corner of the slice, crumbs falling onto the floor when he brings it up to his mouth. It’s clearly not set enough to eat quite yet, but when Eddie’s found something sweet in the house it doesn’t take long at all for him to be digging in. Steve never complains because it just makes his kisses that much sweeter. 

The dark chocolate was a good call, blending in with the nutmeg and clove spices. It’s nice and moist too, melting in Steve’s mouth. Eddie’s come around the corner again, eyes hopeful when he takes in Steve’s relaxed expression.

“Good to eat, then?” And then he’s swooping in to tear off his own piece from the slice Steve made. As soon as he closes his mouth Eddie lets out a happy hum and closes his eyes in happiness. “You are a baking genius. This is delicious! What is this?” Another bite, and then a kiss placed on Steve’s head before Eddie starts to cut another slice. 

“It’s Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread. You mentioned last week not getting to the bakery early enough to get any of their seasonal stuff. And Mrs. Henderson let me have an old recipe magazine book so.” Steve shrugs and runs his hand through his hair before turning away. It’s embarrassing now, thinking about Claudia’s knowing look when he’d asked her if she knew any good recipes for fall that wasn’t pumpkin pie. 

“Baby, this is so good. And you put dark chocolate in here too, right?” All Steve does is nod, hands busying themselves with refolding his dishtowel that’s hanging on his oven door handle. “You spoil me.” There’s humor coloring Eddie’s words and Steve looks up to see a soft smile on his face. “Wanna spoil me some more?” He doesn’t have a moment to be confused, Eddie already closing the space between them and cupping Steve’s face. 

When Eddie kisses him this time, all he can taste is chocolate and cinnamon.

part 6: love is like a butterfly

Life is good.

Now there’s something twenty-year old Eddie would’ve never thought he’d say, what with the murder allegations, the going through an actual hell version of Hawkins and almost dying and all. There was a moment when he really thought he wasn’t going to make it, that the last thing he’d see was Dustin’s teary-eyed face.

But here he is anyway, a couple of scars, a fuck-ton of tattoos and a concerning amount of greying hairs later, still alive and still doing pretty damn good if he says so himself.

After Corroded Coffin suddenly got picked up by some talent agent big shot after a gig in Indianapolis, Eddie felt like he was riding a rollercoaster with no end. There were platinum albums, gigs at the biggest venues in the country, meeting his idols at awards show, magazines with his damn face on it and all Eddie could do was hold on and enjoy the ride.

But now…

Now things have slowed down. Gareth says that he has gone soft with his so-called old age and Eddie kinda has to agree with him. Because as it turns out, life isn't all about the sold-out venues and the adoring fans and the awards shows, sometimes life is just about being with the ones you love.

Which, in Eddie’s case, consists of his tiny little family of three.

If you dream about eating a strawberry it could mean that you are about to witness a wedding.

looove this entire post it's just—yes!! correct across the board!! in regards to this section, i don't think it's a stretch at all. not only is mahiru dreaming of being fed a strawberry, afterwards mahiru and her boyfriend are clasping hands and staring into eachother's eyes as if they're about to be wed. i'd say the connection is definitely there!

Doing a short analysis of the desert in Mahiru's MV. ~🍰

I haven't seen anyone talking about why they chose this particular cake, so because I was bored and I love sweets, I decided to do some research and I think I found some interesting details. ~🍓

Due to the amount of frosting and strawberries, I think there is no doubt that this is a strawberry shortcake.

In Japan, this cake is very popular, especially during Christmas, which here it's not considered as a religious holiday, not even a national one! Christmas is celebrated more like Valentine's day.

Of course, I don't necessary think that Mahiru's MV happens during winter or something, but it shows that this cake represents love, prosperity, themes frequently seen in her song.

But i don't want to just talk about the cake itself, but also the main fruit that composes it - strawberries. 🍓

This fruit is a really interesting one, and I really think that it gives us more insight of Mahiru's character and maybe her relationship with her boyfriend.

~Meaning~

Strawberry represents a delicate symbol of love and it is often used to show romantic desire or attraction. It can also be a symbol of righteousness, purity, perfectionism and modesty.

I think this fruit shows the ideal relationship that Mahiru wants, the characteristics that composes her love for her bf.

Righteousness and purity - Mahiru aspires for an innocent love, a cute, happy one. Her MV's are usually energetic and very aesthetic when it comes for the moments with him.

Perfectionism - I have always perceived Mahiru as being quite a perfectionist when it comes to love. She admits that her favorite hobbies are watching dramas, reading magazines. Consuming a certain type of entertainment, raises your standards and changes your perspectives about different topics. Mahiru describes her younger self as being a "sheltered girl" and in contrast with the fact that she went to an all girls school, it strengthened the desire to experience true love. She wanted her relationship to be the same as in dramas. In these TV series, to increase suspense and tension, the partners experience various quarrels, misunderstandings and breakups, which are fortifying their bound, until they reach their happy ever after. And these things are shown in both MVs. Mahiru admits that she is testing him, she is "happy" to receive this pain that occurs after a breakup. "The breakup rituals" in her point of view are strengthening their relationship and as the time goes on she believes they are closer to their happy ever after. Which in her case, it doesn't really happen.

Modesty - Mahiru has actually very simple wishes when it comes to love. She wants loyalty, the interrogation questions demonstrating that she dislikes cheating and finds it morally wrong.

"Have you ever had an affair?"

She is happy with everything she receives as long as it was made with care and love.

"What's your favourite food?"

Mahiru just wants a person who accepts her love, someone who can appreciates her for who she is.

"What do you wish from your lover?"

A lifetime, traditional love, based on loyalty and compassion...

"What is the ultimate form of love?"

~Beliefs~

-> If two people split a strawberry between themselves then they are bound to fall in love.

The sequences with the cake are interesting... Maybe I'm overthinking, because they aren't literally splitting the fruit, but I want to point this detail:

The bf's slice is small, while Mahiru's filled with a lot of frosting and the whole strawberry. It seems like the bf wasn't as involved in the relationship as Mahiru and that this relationship was bound to fail from the start... Mahiru's love could have been too overbearing for him, resulting in him wanting to end ties with her. It's really sad from both perspectives... While I understand Mahiru and the feeling of wanting to be loved and having someone that understands you, he wasn't the perfect match for her, and neither she was for him. Both had different perspectives of love and neither of them had filled their requirements and needs...

->If you dream about eating a strawberry it could mean that you are about to witness a wedding. Dreams where someone else is eating a strawberry are often interpreted as meaning the dreamer has strong romantic attraction for the person cosuming the food.

Now, I know this seems like a scretch, but to be honest i always perceve the MV's as dreams. I imagine the prisoners sleeping during the extraction and while the machines is doing it's work, they have visions with their crime.

Anyway, Mahiru is trying to make her bf eat that slice with the strawberry, basically she is giving him her love. Unfortunately, he refuses to eat it, he is refusing her love and we see this scene from his point of view:

A rotten love, it's the best I can describe it. Mahiru is forcing her love and feelings to him, who doesn't want to receive them anymore.

And a note for the wedding part: Mahiru always wanted to marry the person she loves. In the MV she is never seen eating the strawberry.

"What's your opinion on marriage?"

Mahiru: "It's something I really dream of."

->Entire strawberry plants were used to treat drepression and melancholy.

Another interesting fact indeed.

This can also refer to Mahiru's mental state, which is deteriorating in Milgram's prison, but maybe it can also refer to her bf as well?

The first part of MV... The lyrics are quite sad and depressing.

"Sigh... No appetite, I can't sleep,

my hair's a mess

What am I supposed to do now?

If you won't tell me, I can't be me"

Considering that he ended his life, this shows that he was in a very bad state of mind, so Mahiru trying to give him the strawberry could mean that she wanted to help him, to cheer him up. An act that doesn't help and does more damage...

Also, the lyric were it says that she doesn't have appetite... The only food shown is the strawberry shortcake, and as the fact tells.. It's like she doesn't feel worthy of this "treatment" to cure her own sadness... :(

If I find more interesting things, I will probably continue. I'm not very pround of this, but I think it highlighted a few details.~🍰🍓

so!! my favourite five (5) fics that i've written:

1. to invent a language; M, newtmas, 67k

Two best friends, inseparable since the day they met, return from their road trip on different days. One moves out of town with his sister immediately, the other locks himself inside the house as soon as he arrives. The town in question is called Haven and, staying true to its small town workings, erupts in gossip.

A decade and a half later, it's an ordinary day of tending to plants and navigating workshops for Newt. Quite ordinary, indeed, until the Garden's doorbell chimes and an unexpected guest voices his presence.

Thomas always had a knack for turning Newt's world upside down, after all.

this fic is absolutely my best work and my most favourite thing i've ever written. my baby. my fucking cinnamon apple. i poured my heart into it and had SO much fun and aha! moments while writing it. it explores complicated feelings, the meaning of family, healing, forgiveness and love. if you'd like to read only one of my works, i'd say you should read this one.

2. when the red sun sets; M, newtmas, 8.2k

Safe Haven is safe in the way that they don't have to run anymore - from WCKD, from the Cranks and the Flare. They've got no outside threats to run from, but what happens when the threats come from within? What happens when those who have never known safety arrive to the safest place on Earth, and what happens when they are Newt and Thomas?

this one i word barfed from my heart too. it was very unexpected and probably the most cathartic piece of writing i've ever done. as the summary suggests, it's about healing from severe trauma together.

3. in the tide of a day; M, newtmas, 4.4k

Among gentle rolling hills where colorful meadows give way to lush evergreen forests and woods adorned with vibrantly colored leaves in all shades of red and gold, there is a small brick cottage with a garden so beautiful, it would turn middle-aged women set on seeing their lawns on the front pages of notable gardening magazines green with envy. In this lovely little cottage live Newt and Thomas, runaway WICKED mutants turned superheroes out of the sense of obligation and necessity. On their long-awaited day off, and as often as they can spare the time, they use their powers, bestowed to them as weapons, to shape their home to their liking.

superheroes au!! one of the fluffiest things i've ever written. alternatively: newt and thomas get some mf Rest. there's baking and cuddling and gardening and general domestic stuff. they're in love your honor <3

4. tell me what i feel is real (tell me that you feel it too); T, newtmas, 7k

Everything starts with a realization that maybe it's not usual to draw your best friend all the time.

or, Newt is a senior in college, Thomas a junior, and they've been sharing a dorm room for three years. Feelings Occur, but they refuse to admit it. Fun!

the summary says it all tbh. i still love this fic because it brought me back from my writing slump and came with the gift of bonding over it with sami (@newtedison) to whom this fic is dedicated to <3

5. ice cold but i'm still melting; T, sonyarriet, 1.9k

It is winter all year round, but Sonya finds herself experiencing spring.

this is a canon compliant (somewhat) slice of life fic where sonya and harriet fall in love in their maze <3 minimal angst, it's mostly fluff.

aaand because im proud of where this one is going, but it's still incomplete:

For Brighter Horizons; M, brenderesa, sonyarriet, newtmas, 18.5k (so far)

The world is unjust, especially to those who call themselves Mutants and Androids, but it shouldn't be. It doesn't have to be. When a revolution is set into motion, a chain of events caused by (mostly) chance meetings will show to Brenda and Teresa, Sonya and Harriet, and Newt and Thomas all the little reasons why the world they're living in is worth fighting for.

superpowers au!! mutants and androids and elves and other non-humans!! it's mostly action/adventure, planning and executing a revolution kind of a fic which is still mostly character driven! there will be three (3) chapters total, the first one is published and it is a brenderesa chapter! next one will be sonyarriet (it's currently in the works!) and the final chapter will be newtmas <3 im very excited to have more time to finish it, ive been having a hell lot of fun with it!!

ahhh thank you so much for the corrections!! i relied on a site that let you write out the kanji and then told you what it meant in english but the entire time i was like "there's absolutely no way these are all right..." the king radical strikes from the shadows.

so a while back, i wrote a post about shidou and mahiru's names and how, if you remove the wood kanji, each word reflects their character. the person who discovered this deleted their socials (sob sob) so i figured i'd post it here for archiving! i relied on a translator since i can't read kanji so i apologize if i'm wrong.

01. Haruka 櫻 -> 嬰 (Newborn Child, Necklace)

02. Yuno 樫 -> 堅 Strong, Resolute

03. Fuuta 梶 -> 尾 Tail, End *potentially a reference to his cowardly nature. in backdraft there's a pun where fuuta sings "hey mouse, say cheese!"

uwaa i wanted to do this forever ago but ( *gestures to hoard of mental problems* ) it simply wasn't in my favor. i can absolutely see your choices though—you're very mature, well-put together, and are lovely to have conversations with. there's likely a stronger theme binding these four but i wouldn't want to be too presumptuous,,

i've always been envious of people who heavily relate to character to the point of kinning them, since i've never experienced anything similar for myself. though there's lots of characters i like, there's very little i connect with and even less that i've gone "oh, this character is just like me!" so this question stumped me a little bit. this will probably change in the future but for now:

from the few milgram quizzes i've done i've always gotten kotoko so it must be accurate! funnily enough i've stated a few times that i don't really like amane, but i think she's closest to me in terms of personality. major self-own when you think about it ( + haruka and mu feel pretty self-explanatory ).

and i'm cheating a little bit by also including some non-milgram characters!

i'd love to gush about why i relate to these four but oh goodness that'd take forever haha. i do love them all dearly though, even though they'd probably all hate eachother ( which feels apt lmao )

🔸Yamanaka: It sounds like a real story… like you just got released from prison

🔸Horie (Haruka): I’m enjoying the fresh air of the outside world lol. I’m still not sure how the story and the character’s lives will develop based on the forgive or not forgive results, so I’m really excited to find out as a fan who loves this content, and even for songs, I wonder if they’re affected by the fact that I was forgiven. I want to work hard while sharing these feelings with everyone. Thank you for your continued support for Milgram!

🔸Aimi (Kotoko): I’m Aimi in Kotoko’s role. Kotoko is still unreleased, but the song is intense, the drama is great… and the cover is intense too. I want everyone to listen to the cover ASAP… that’s how intense it is. Please look forward to it. What I felt after today’s session was that depending on how the story develops from the trials and votes, would our choices from the past become a subject for forgive/not forgive votes in the future? I’m really excited to find out. I’ll keep working hard as a fan, and as Kotoko. Please support us!

🔸Amami (Es): Lastly, from Yamanaka san.

🔸Yamanaka: I think Milgram will be a long term project, but I think it would be fun if Milgram can influence your outlook towards real life. Even though Haruka and Kotoko and others are “murderers”, each has their own reasons, their own lives, and it’s not as simple as it being legal or illegal. There isn’t a single murder that is completely fictitious and doesn’t happen in real life, so maybe they happen in our world too, and maybe we end up forgiving someone who shouldn’t be forgiven. Maybe it’s something you watched on the news today, and it’s a case like that. I really hope Milgram can help you see the world from a new perspective. That’s the kind of entertainment Deco*27, Otoirosan and I aim to deliver. We want to make contents that will accompany your life. Although the contents are rather serious, the cast are rowdy and fun, and I like this balance. I hope you will love us as a whole. Now we’ve reached the end, but is there anything else you’d like to add?

Currently Reading: Ooo i've been reading hoards of manga recently but they've mostly been short stories. uh, I've been avidly following the 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really Love You + She Likes To Cook and She Likes To Eat.

Current Obsessions: oh boy. this would be quite the list. um. off the top of my head: milgram (obviously), aphmau, and welcome home puppet show all have their own dedicated accounts. character-wise there's hiyoko saionji and snow white i'm both writing fanfiction for. i've recently gotten back into genshin impact and i've created a timely freminent account on twt. oh and i've been really interested in gyaru aesthetics!

currently reading: i’m rereading shimanami tasogare/ our dreams at dusk by kamatani yuhki. ive started to do this every summer, it always hits home around this time of the year. i am also reading a number of enstars stories at once (i guess sudden death would be the most noteworthy here). i know neither of these is like reading reading but this is where i’m at!

current obsession: uuuuuuu. well it’s enstars. theres just so many characters and so many things to know about them my brain feels like it’s jumping up and down on a trampoline (positive), plus theres the rhythm game aspect. it is so much fun. im having so much fun right now

please know i am forever in your debt because i knew damn well i was forgetting so many things but i just. could not find the original post

so a while back, i wrote a post about shidou and mahiru's names and how, if you remove the wood kanji, each word reflects their character. the person who discovered this deleted their socials (sob sob) so i figured i'd post it here for archiving! i relied on a translator since i can't read kanji so i apologize if i'm wrong.

01. Haruka 櫻 -> 嬰 (Newborn Child, Necklace)

02. Yuno 樫 -> 堅 Strong, Resolute

03. Fuuta 梶 -> 尾 Tail, End *potentially a reference to his cowardly nature. in backdraft there's a pun where fuuta sings "hey mouse, say cheese!"

04. Mu 楠 -> 南 South *mu is often represented by the number four (her number code, four friends, four desks, four lockers, etc)

05. Shidou 桐 -> 同 Same *appears in the lyrics: 同じ 重さにはなれない -> “Throw down”, someone’s value cannot be the same as another

06. Mahiru 椎-> 隹 Bird

05. Kazui 椋 -> 京 Capital (City) *gonna be honest i have no clue what this means in relation to kazui

08. Amane 桃 -> 兆 Omen
