As far as I can tell the words are sort of showing the things that surround a space? Kyū tsuna (the translators i've seen either say nine points or ropes) makes me think of the ropes tied at temples, and temples can be both boundary and gateway but I don't have much context for this one...

Henkō I've seen as "polarized light" which seems to reference the blue+red requirements of purple maybe? But also is this image of a wave pulling in two directions, the word making it both divided and still referring to both possible "directions" at once, so it's a concept like his technique rather than a decision of direction.

The crow and shomyo could refer to the voice/message from heaven and the chant to heaven, which is another "conceptual" gap. Also Gojo is sort of answering a prayer while performing a chant, so he is both the messenger and supplicant maybe?

I don't really get "表裏の間" at all. I've seen it translated as "head and tail" "gap between within and without" and "chasm of front and back", google just says "front and back" but the last character translates to something like "interval". It evokes the concept of the end and the beginning being both as far apart from one another as possible, but also as close to on another as possible which seems close to the concept of purple but it feels like reading into it too much...

九綱 (kukou) means "nine ropes". Nine is sort of sacred number here, might be taken from nine virtues of Shakyamuni (whom Gojou have a lot of reference to). And the ropes, just like you said, act as a boundary like in temple to mark sacred place. It could also refer to the state of intertwining as he does to Red and Blue to create Purple 偏光 (henkou), means "light polarization". I agree with your idea here, that it's most likely referring to Red and Blue and the joining of two techniques. 烏と声明 (karasu to shoumyou). means "crow and shoumyou". In opposite to their reputation in the west, crow in Japanese lore is actually thought as the harbinger of good omen. So messenger is right. The 声明 though, it'll read generally as seimei and does mean message. But here, it's read as shoumyou, which actually refer to a style of chanting in Buddhism. It is a style of chanting Buddhist scripture with music. So not ordinary message, but rather special one?? 表裏の間 (hyouri no hazama), translated literally would be "between the front and back". This could be taken literally but also could refer to one's face shown in public and private. So it might means the space between reality and imaginary, as his technique realizes "infinity" from imaginary concept

For the first question, re: WWX and LWJ in the Jiang Family Shrine without permission from JC or any other Jiang (though JC is the only bloodline Jiang left so mostly JC) -- yes, that is actually majorly disrespectful. Esp for LWJ because he didn't previously have any relation to the Jiang.

Longer answer on why this is: during most of ancient Chinese history (and in fairly traditional families to this day) ancestor worship is practiced more so or equally to other religions like Taoism or Buddhism, meaning that yes, the family shrine is a sacred space BUT it's also a very private space that stores the memorial placards of your immediate family. It's kind of like if you have a family tomb/crypt and you get sudden uninvited guests in it.

Hey, SandcatM here. Just read your response about the On’yomi & Kun’yomi readings in the Japanese language. I understood that the the kanji symbols originated from China & the Japanese incorporated the kanji symbols while developing their own language by using the Chinese reading(On’yomi) & creating another type of reading understandable to the native Japanese around that time period (Kun’yomi). Moreover, I do agree that the best way to figure out the way to read the kanji is to look up the kanji combination in the internet or dictionary & remember it by saying the phonetics & writing the pronunciation in hiragana. Example w/ remembering A3! chara names, Muku/むく/椋, Kumon/くもん/九門, & Juza/じゅうざ/十座. Also, I just found an article about it in the Tofugu website.

Unrelated, some of the TWST charas sang a cover of the song “This is Halloween,” which is very good. Also, if you want to hear Leona’s VA sing in English, there was an old song called “Walk In The Lonely Night” from the anime Magic-Kyun! Renaissance(which includes TWST’s Ortho’s VA, A3!’s Tenma’s VA, A3!’s Chikage’s VA, & A3!’s Kabuto’s VA for the main cast), which I sometimes think that song would be good to use for Leona’s SSR Fairy Gala card. Though when you consider which TWST VAs sang together before, there are some groups like Idia’s & Silver’s as LIPxLIP, Azul’s & Che’nya’s in A3!’s “The Contract,” & Riddle’s VA use to sang and/or rap w/ other TWST VAs.

The Village Hidden in the Whirlpools that was decimated in the world of war. That village's mark has been etched into the back of the Konoha Chuunin vest. The administration that led the Village Hidden in the Whirlpools, the "Uzumaki Clan", were distant blood relatives of the Senju Clan, and the two villages built friendly relations by offers of Sealing Techniques and such since ancient times.

[Bottom Right, panel of Kushina] Kushina: "I was chosen as the second Jinchuuriki of the Ninetails. Honestly speaking, I was brought to Konoha for the purpose of becoming the Ninetails' Jinchuuriki… from the Land of Whirlpools that is." 百葉集　其の五十一 「木ノ葉隠れの里に伝承されし「亡国」の紋」

戦乱の世に滅んでしまった「渦潮の隠れ里」。この里のマークが、木ノ葉の中忍ベストの背中に描かれている。渦潮の隠れ里の行政を行なっている「うずまき一族」は、千手一族と遠い血縁関係にあり、古くから二つの里間では封印術の提供などの友好関係を築いていた。

「右下」 クシナ：「私は2番目の九尾の人柱力として選ばれた 本当いうと九尾の人柱力になるために木ノ葉へ連れてこられたの…渦の国からね」 「火の国」「渦の国」 ←高度な「封印術」と、高い「生命力」を持つ一族。

「左上」 「今でも木ノ葉の中では友好の証としてそのマークが用いられてるでしょ」 ↑中忍ベストの背にある紋様は、うずまき一族との友好の証である。

「左下」 ↑高い封印術を持つがゆえ、他里から狙われ、滅びてしまった

I know you study ancient poetry, I don’t know the extent to which you’re interested in works in translation vs the original language and I’m not quite sure of your period, but I was wondering if you have a recommended English translation of the Nine Songs/九歌 by Qu Yuan and especially 山鬼/the Mountain Spirit poem? I think it might be thematically relevant to a WIP but I don’t read Chinese so I’m not sure which is translation most/more accurate having read several, since some seem to emphasize the man the speaker is talking to more than others

oh friend. Oh Friend Do I Know This Poem

so I’m truly not the best person to ask about 'recommended translations’ or anything because I, uh, am generally not reading things in translation. When it comes to 《楚辞》Chuci poems, I’m most familiar with David Hawkes’ Songs of the South, which is definitely a good place to start because he includes a great deal of research and annotations on the vastly different cultural milieu that produced the Chuci poems. That being said, I don’t... love? the way he renders language? I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a really good translation of the Chuci poems though, since the sao style is difficult to parse in the original, and thereby even harder to render in translation.

《山鬼》Shangui / The Mountain Spirit holds a special place in my heart because it was one of the first Chuci poems I ever read. I’m not surprised that there’s a lot of tension/inconsistency around the question of ‘who is speaking to whom’ and which descriptions refer to which figure in the poem, because Shangui is genuinely confusing about it! It’s a poem, so it often does things like skip the subject of its descriptions, which means that... we don’t know what line is describing what person. 

And it doesn’t help that Shangui participates in the long-standing and illustrious tradition of all-around genderfuckery begun by the 《离骚》Lisao. The whole poem is really very vague about who the mountain spirit is, and not to be an essentialist about identity or anything, but if the poem gave us some concrete information about literally anyone (by which I mean, identifying characteristics, not just which flowers they were wearing, smh Qu Yuan), that would really help with like, basic reading comprehension. 

When I translated it back in the day for class, I dodged the gender problem by using exclusively first and second person pronouns. Even Arthur Waley says in his commentary on this poem:

...if it were possible in English to be non-committal about genders, I would have left the question open in my translation.

also, I must add a link to this song -- Winky诗 is an artist who occasionally goes around putting poems from the Chuci to music, which is so incredibly nerdy and awesome at the same time, and 《山鬼》 is one of my favorites of his

ハイキュー (haikyuu)

i just saw comments saying haikyuu day is on 8/19 soso i think i got it. in japanese, u write/read:

‘eight’ as 八 (hachi), which is similar to the ハ (ha) character

and since 八 (hachi) also has a -chi, they decided to add イ, so that it becomes ha-i-chi and read as ha-ichi (eight - one)

‘nine’ as 九 (kyuu) ; written in katakana as キュー

so then we get 8-1-9 from ハイキュー which then became the 8/19 haikyuu day

i'm learning mandarin at school and learning some on the side too since we're pretty slow and sometimes when i see sentences in chinese and am able to read/understand the meaning i'm so happy! in what you said to the other anon (如果需要找个人陪练 etc. ) and the tags i was able to understand most of it except 陪练 though i can take a guess based on context. it's nice to know all i'm learning can be used to understand stuff and isn't limited to small simple sentences like 这是我家的照片 haha

pro tip for learning chinese: 多看看剧，多读读字幕！相信我！！！这比什么都管用！

我从小学到初中都学了九年的中文了！上课有用吗？学到了什么精华吗？并没有！我的中文都怎么学来的？刷剧看字幕自己慢慢学会的。
