Welcome to my blog!

Since I recently passed a follower milestone, I figured it was time to give this unwieldy space a table of contents.

My name is Blake, 20s, librarian in training, fiction writer, and hopeful novelist. This is a side blog (because I was a bad planner a year and a half ago), so I’ll follow back from @ichariancarrion.

My major author fandoms here are LM Montgomery and Diana Wynne Jones. For the former, I use the tag #lmm lockdown, though also post frequently with #emily of new moon and #blue castle book club. I post fanfictions on Ao3 under the name ASellerofDreams—I started there due to the Blue Castle Fanworks Challenge, which inspired a Barney Snaith POV fic, but I’ve since branched off to another fandom that gave me brainworms. Shadows of Shalott 6/58: “Anne of Green Gables / The Lady of Shalott” by Deborah Stokol // Combyne

This is a bit different from the previous entries (and the following entries, really), for a number of reasons. First, I’m designing a vaguely Disneybounding-inspired costume piece for a thirteen-year-old girl, hence the jewelry and the lack of attention paid to coordination. Second, because it’s for a girl pretending to be Elaine of Astolat and not for a woman embodying the character herself, there are no cosmetics and the outfit is meant to draw attention to her youth. Third, this is a song not only about Tennyson’s poem but about an early fangirl of Tennyson’s poem, someone who played pretend a little too hard and nearly drowned in a pond.

The last part is the most interesting - Tennyson’s Lady, whether or not she’s Elaine, has very little character beyond wishing she could leave her tower and then choosing to do so when she sees Lancelot, which directly causes her death. Writers and artists are free to interpret this however they like, and already we’ve seen a vast spectrum of perspectives assigning her everything from fear to resolve to resigned acceptance. Anne, by contrast, is exploding with character, burning herself into the minds of anyone who picks up Montgomery’s book. Her love for Elaine is in perfect step with her romanticism and her melodrama and her love for all things macabre, and her commitment to solemnly acting out the character’s death is charming and nostalgic for anyone looking back on the point in their lives when they played pretend a little too hard. Notably, this Lady is saved by her Lancelot - the boat Anne is using to float down the pond springs a leak and sinks, and she’s rescued by her future husband Gilbert, though she’s something of a tsundere at this point in their relationship and rebuffs him. Thus we also have our first (possibly only) happy ending.

I drew primarily on a silhouette inspired by Japanese lolita fashion and conceptions of 19th century Anglophone countries in anime - Anne of Green Gables is beloved in Japan, and the focus on girls’ aesthetics and girls’ tastes that lolita fashion invokes is also in line with Anne acting as an icon of (often sapphic) girlhood for everyone who encounters her. The clothes are still Western because Anne herself is Canadian, but the color palette and the boots are intended to evoke scrolling through Tumblr tags in 2013. I included a combination of vintage and modern jewelry, including an amethyst brooch similar to the famous one from earlier in the book and a bracelet meant to call back to Anne and Diana’s friendship, and the yellow shawl is a prop directly mentioned in the text from the chapter about playing Elaine.

“Shadows of Shalott” is a 58-installment project where I curate one outfit per song adapting, based on, or inspired by the Tennyson poem ‘The Lady of Shalott’. Spoken word recordings are exempt, as are covers; the 58 songs I selected are original musical pieces. The tag to track (or block) is “shadows of shalott”.

Just surpassed 100 followers and I know that's kind of small to a lot of people, but I'm amazed and honored that less than a year ago this was just a place i threw random aesthetic things and quotes and opinions; and now I'm fully in the two fandoms I adore (LM Montgomery and Diana Wynne Jones) and have so many amazing moots and people!! it’s so fun finding community and yeah anyway just keeping it sentimental here today 😁
