Viserion had taken to Tyrion well, so much so in fact that sometimes she imagined him to have taken care of her, not her own mother ( not after being locked away ) So when she believes him to be in danger, she announces herself with a thunderous roar and fire scorches the ground around him to put a barrier between them and Tyrion.

From the moment Tyrion first saw Viserion, he was infatuated with her. He had always loved dragons. ‘The dragons have their duty and their code, for they see the world of men as a tale of greed. Their job is to take away the false treasures in the hope that mankind will learn once again to treasure creation and one another.’ he used to say moons ago, not truly knowing that he would ever see a dragon - let alone touch one. The feeling of Viserion’s scales against the skin of his hands was not a feeling Tyrion would soon forget - 

No matter how often he saw them fly, arcing with outstretched wings, each as brilliant as stained glass, he held his breath for a moment, eyes wide. They were kites without strings, celebrations of freedom with each rhythmic beat. So, to have one scorch ground to make a barrier between him and his assailants - he didn’t know who they were, not a lot could be seen through the ring of fire separating them - he could only feel a tangent of happiness soaring through his veins.
