Grief's A Crack

Sixty Eight years have gone by and it still isn't enough to repair the wound to the concrete paths of the heart.

“Take a breath.”

In four, hold four, out four, hold four.

But it didn’t help the pain in his heart, the clenching of the organ, the undeniable weight of time. 

Grief, it was supposed to grow small over the years.

Grief, it was supposed to become manageable. 

But he was only distracted.

The house was quiet, most of the kids weren’t home on the weekend. Only Morena was up in her room, but in the attic she wasn’t audible. Alee watched the rain trickle down the window, hadn’t it been raining back then too?

No, he couldn’t remember.

He was starting to forget.

That came with the curse of being unable to die.

But he could still feel the grief from back then as if it had happened yesterday, even with the waning memories of the event itself.

“People must have known what he was doing to us.” Alee broke the silence, his whole chest felt hollow. It swung rapidly between nothing and everything. It was too hard to focus at times. Now was one of those times. 

“Pardon?”

Cirino’s green eyes stayed on him as he looked out the window. A distant clap of thunder could be heard, and the windborne sorcerer could feel the shifts in pressure. The rain would become a storm, as if reacting to Alee’s grief. 

He knew that Alee had far more control over their reality than the fox sorcerer realised.

“People must have known. My classmates, my teachers, hers. The landlord, the people in our apartment. People knew.” Alee whispered, voice quiet and broken. Cirino’s heart hurt for him. His heart twisted and squeezed within his chest. He knew Alee was broken, was hurting. He always hurt.

“Nobody did anything. If somebody did something she wouldn’t be dead.” 

“Alee..”

“If just one person cared, Cirino.” Alee ran a shaky hand through his long dark hair, it was a mess from the action being repeated again and again. “If just one person cared and helped her.” 

“You became what you both needed, that has to mean something, Alee.”

But he shook his head, the pain he’d endured, the love he’d lost, so much of it took from him, and it took and it took and he knew, he knew despite the good he’d done.

Alee knew he would never truly recover, he knew he would never get those pieces back. It wasn’t possible. They were gone.

Stolen with what had been stolen from him.

“It doesn’t mean anything. She’s still…” His voice cracked and he looked away, the tears finally beginning to well in his eyes. “She’s still gone.”
