The rise of "let people enjoy things" is single handedly the backbone of the rise of anti intellectualism
#i need to talk about this#disclaimer : im beyond terrible at putting my point across#so with that being said let me attempt at it#let's take look at the hate and misogyny women receive for liking a certain genre of books#that is so often simply countered with let people enjoy things#but we cannot let that narrative take over a whole as if critical thinking is “bad”?#booktok has made it so that disliking a popular books makes you the person with the superiority complex who should just let people enjoy-#-things#but when did criticizing actively target audiences who like that peice of literature? When did that become the narrative?#its all mindless consumption without a second thought to the actual material which can easily be credited to the tropification of books#the enemies do turn into lovers and the best friends do fall in love 10 years down the line#classifying books into tropes and then fulfilling that promise gives books an illusion of being “good” since it checks those boxes-#-that the reader picked up the book for in the first place#the act of reading has kind of been substituted by the act of being a reader and just owning stacks of books#we have turned away from any form of analysis or criticism#if it scratches the itch then its automatically the perfect book without further thought#i cant help but contribute the mere existence of that “itch” to how mordern books are classified into tropes with set plotlines#intelligenctualism is almost always looked at as elitism#reading only classics doesn't make you an intellectual individual but looking at any book with a critical lens may it be a classic or a rom#-com does#criticizing certain aspects of your absolute favorite books is intellectualism and not bullying people who like anything but classics#that distinction is so far lost in translation that talking about how a popular book is objectively bad is being a “hater”#well then im a hater#this is not a hate post for people who actively enjoy booktock or the more popular books#im just trying to introduce any amount of nuance into the conversation thats all#i can honestly go on forever but i think ill end my ranting here#literary criticism#literature#books#anti intellectualism

my toxic trait is that I hear my thesis supervisor say "it would be incredibly difficult to study the transition from bronze age to iron age pottery in Athens because we've yet to find a convincing transition. There's a missing link"
and immediately go 👀👀 ok but what it someone.. 👀 could FIND that missing link 👀👀 maybe write like a thesis or something 👀

oh? something mizora said actually being worth listening to??
this is an interesting bit of foreshadowing to ansur being dead/wyll being the true "heart of the gate!"
#bg3#thoughts about media#I have to wonder if they considered draconic sorcerer wyll at all...#I don't believe there are really any stipulations for how a draconic sorcerer obtains their power from the dragon.#maybe they DID consider it- but decided against it because they didn't think/didn't have time to make it so that wyll would-#-automatically be the one chosen to speak to ansur were he in the party. that would have been a cool potential path for him honestly!#like if he was in your party- he would get auto-selected to speak to ansur and if you chose certain dialogue options-#-he could gain the powers of a sorcerer! it would work well to build upon the twist in his fairy tale-like story!#is it because of the bad reputation sorcerers have? or because mizora is technically classified as one?#or maybe it's because they didn't want to have wyll and the durge to BOTH be sorcerers. since they're both origins...?#idk. I'm kind of the opinion that durge is somewhat...overrated. I'd rather wyll get the fancy magical dragon powers.#I feel like they should have just...not added durge as a character and focused on REALLY polishing the 6 main origin companions.#because even with a character like star. who has a lot of material-- the writing feels...directionless? at certain points?#in a better world. we would have 6 main characters with more cohesive stories of relatively equal length and complexity.#in a better world. wyll would be treated as THE main of the main characters that he is. he and lae'zel.#they are like the CORE of the story imo.

A majority of high profile classified document leakers are assholes. That includes Russian assets Edward Snowden and Julian Assange. Jack Teixeira undeniably belongs in that category.
He is basically a far right white supremacist gun nut in addition to being a traitor.
Jack Teixeira, dressed in camouflage fatigues, his finger wrapped around the trigger of a semiautomatic rifle, faced the camera and spoke as though reciting an oath.
“Jews scam, n----rs rape, and I mag dump.”
Teixeira raised his weapon, aimed at an unseen target and fired 10 times in rapid succession, emptying the magazine of bullets.
The six-second video, taken at a gun range near Teixeira’s home in Massachusetts, affords a brief but illuminating glimpse into the offline world of the 21-year-old National Guard member, who stands accused of leaking a trove of classified military intelligence on the group-chat platform Discord.
The Washington Post investigated Teixeira‘s background and online activities. He’s not exactly the boy next door which extremist blowhards like Tucker Carlson have claimed he is.
Teixeira’s love of guns, which first drew him to an online community of friends, was intertwined with a deep suspicion of the government that he served as an enlisted member of the Air National Guard. But Teixeira did not consider himself a whistleblower, according to friends.
By the time of his arrest, filings by federal prosecutors show that Teixeira had amassed a small arsenal of rifles, shotguns and pistols, as well as a helmet, gas mask and night-vision goggles, all under the roof of the house where he lived with his mother and stepfather. The Post obtained and verified two videos taken at their home in Dighton, Mass., where the FBI arrested Teixeira last month.
Filmed from the shooter’s perspective, the first video shows a person identified by a Discord user as Teixeira firing an AR-style weapon into the forest. Another video shows the gunman firing a pistol into the woods behind Teixeira’s home, including two rapid volleys that suggest the weapon may have been modified. It isn’t clear what legal or illegal modifications Teixeira may have made, though devices like binary triggers and typically illegal auto sear accessories can make semiautomatic guns fire quicker than they are designed to shoot. A separate photograph shows an AK-style weapon resting on a table outside the family home next to a helmet with attached night-vision goggles.
For Teixeira, firearms practice seemed to be more than a hobby. “He used the term ‘race war’ quite a few times,” said a close friend who spent time with Teixeira in an online community on Discord, a platform popular with video game players, and had lengthy private phone and video calls with him over the course of several years.
“He did call himself racist, multiple times,” the friend said in an interview. “I would say he was proud of it.”
Teixeira joined the National Guard in 2019 – during the Trump administration. We all remember how Donald Trump refused to admit there is such a thing as domestic terrorism. Obviously Trump doesn’t want to upset his white supremacist base.
The Post obtained hundreds of documents, as well as text messages, that Teixeira shared on the server over the course of several months. Teixeira’s lawyers declined to comment. Teixeira, who remains in federal custody, has not entered a plea.
[ ... ]
On Discord, an account with the handle “Jack the Dripper,” one of Teixeira’s known monikers, shared an image titled “payback,” showing a large passenger jet careening toward the Kaaba in Mecca, Islam’s holiest site.
Teixeira asserted that “lots of FBI agents were found to have sympathized with the Jan 6 rioters,” and he said naive members of the intelligence community, of which he was technically a part, had been “cucked.” He referred to mainstream press as “zogshit,” appropriating a popular white-supremacist slur for the “Zionist Occupied Government.” Friends said that during live video chats, Teixeira expounded on baseless accusations of shadowy, sinister control by Jewish and liberal elites, as well as corrupt law enforcement authorities.
“He had quite a few conspiratorial beliefs,” the close friend said, adding: “I remember him multiple times talking about things like Waco and Ruby Ridge, and talking about how the government kills their own people,” referring to a pair of notorious armed standoffs that the far right has held up as emblematic of government oppression.
In addition to the federal charges, Teixeira may face additional charges as a member of the military.
Ann Stefanek, an Air Force spokeswoman, said Teixeira is subject to “potential discipline,” considering he was working under active duty. After the Air Force concludes an investigation, she said, a commander will determine if Teixeira should face charges in the military. The service is coordinating closely with the FBI in the leak investigation, she said.
[ ... ]
The military has, in the past, struggled to track down individuals who have espoused racist or white-nationalist ideologies. Service members have faced charges that include dereliction of duty and misconduct for racist rants.
Teixeira‘s extremism goes back to his high school years.
The interest in video games and conservative politics was accompanied by an acute obsession with violence, the friend said. “He would send me a video of someone getting killed, ISIS executions, mass shootings, war videos. People would screen-share it, and he would laugh very loudly and be very happy to watch these things with everyone else. He absolutely enjoyed gore.”
Friends may not have taken seriously Teixeira’s threats against his high school. But he voiced approval of some shooters, particularly when they targeted people of different races and faiths. Teixeira was especially impressed by a gunman’s rampage at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2019, which left 51 people dead and 40 injured. “He was very happy that those people died,” the friend said, because they were Muslim.
This guy is seriously unhinged. The US military needs to conduct more effective investigations of new recruits. Several obvious red flags were missed back in 2019 when Teixeira signed up.

hot take here(maybe)
but when season 2 was hinted at and revealed as a possibility
I didn’t give a crap about Sam’s mom
like yea I get one of Sam’s main things is finding his mom duh
but I didn’t actually care about his mom
when the second season was announced I was expecting the journey of finding his mom not actually meeting her
ya know and honestly I felt so disappointed like why the hell should I care about her if that wasn’t my goal to begin with
again I was in it for the mystery not the actual character and to see her all of a sudden in the literal FIRST EPISODE was a huge let down again why should I give a single sh-t about this woman
I didn’t want an actual whole bonding thing with Sam and his mom I wanted an explanation and even that felt half -ssed at best like you couldn’t give us the most basic storyline ever given and instead gave us something extremely complicated and crumbled together that it left an AWFUL taste in my mouth like…..wow ok

Yall this woman is sooo fuckin mad at me for calling her out 😭 she reblogged that last one three separate times just to 1. make sure i knew sHe WaS dOiNg HeR pHd At CaMbRiDgE 2. to call me a whore (her only other insults are bitch and cunt and considering she's angry at me for going to a historically womens college and butch lesbians for existing that checks out) and 3. make absolutey clear that me posting a magazine photoshoot was THE MOST ENTITLED THING EVER and she was actually SOOO OPPRESSED for daring to be a girly cis girl who held hands with boys at smith. And ofc she hit me with the tried and true "hows your gEnDeR sTuDiEs degree" i would like all of you to know hampshire has a birdwatching major
Like this is the kind of thing i expect from 15 year olds but she was in college in 2000 so shes like 40 😭 that said this is all exactly the kind of shit i expected her to say and since its still boring i waurnt reply unless i think of a really funny way to make fun of her. Thanks for reading

...The easy answer would be to say when he was a child, when they still lived in Orochimaru's hideout. But no, that couldn't be it. There was something worse, at least to him.
No, it came later than that, even after they made it to Konoha. A time when Karin had finally entrusted him to walk around by himself, without her or without Hiroki at his side. A grand mistake she would never learn about if he had any say in it.
Satoshi had been told he could trust the people of Konoha--at least, his uncle told him that. Karin never muttered a word similar. Yet, he'd found himself in the arms of one of the shinobi officers; a man whom was part of the interrogation unit. Assumptions was all they were going on, whether he had the same ability as his mother...and he was brought in front of a half dead man, barely clinging to life.
You'll be fine
You won't die
It's for the sake of the village
Each bite to his skin hurt worse than the last; was more desperate. All to keep the man alive, torture him for longer, get more answers out of him, in front of someone who hadn't experienced any horror much like this.
...He didn't want to be here anymore, but he couldn't tell his mother. His family was here. Hiroki was doing better, Hiroki was learning, Hiroki was growing.
He couldn't tell anyone. He was supposed to trust them. He was so alone, ever since then.

Homework || Starting a Novel
The first homework for SAN is due on Monday, Jan. 23rd. We are to read up through page 22 in Walter Mosley's The Elements of Fiction. I have found that I have a great distaste for his writing and cannot wait to finish reading this... novella. It doesn't deserve to be called a book. Because this post contains my writing, I have decided to throw in a read more. This post is rather long, and though I would not care about that thanks to the new 'expand post' feature, I do care about the ability to remove my writing in the future if needed during the publishing process.
The Instructions:
-Write down at least one thing you’d like to remember from each of the sections in the assigned Mosley readings; Preface, Introduction, The Structure of Revelation, What Is Structure in Fiction?, The Blank Page, The Novel Is Bigger than Your Head, Context, Character.
Preface “Fiction is one of the few constructive human activities in which we have the potential to make something from almost nothing. Something from nothing. That kind of alchemy is a recipe for failure and also the hope for the miraculous.” pg. vi Introduction “We all have a piece or two of the puzzle somewhere in the depths of our souls” pg. xii The Structure of Revelation “…designed to show us that there has always been hope, even in the darkest moments; and the potential for that hope resides in all of us, no matter our foibles, shortcomings, or even our cowardice.” pg. 2 What Is Structure in Fiction? “Story doesn’t start out as structure but slowly assembles itself into a tale filled with surprises, comparisons, and resolution.” pg. 5 The Blank Page “You cannot dance without stumbling now and then. You cannot build the story without mastering the tools the way children learn to play and speak—by discovering the truth while telling it.” pg. 10 The Novel Is Bigger than Your Head Honestly I didn’t get much from this chapter. I don’t approach writing or stories in the same way that Mosley does. This chapter was about letting things get messy and not knowing where you’re going but like I already do that? I don’t think that much about my stories and the interactions between characters so much as I just write the story I want to tell. It doesn’t matter to me what other people think or what other information they need. I tell what I want to tell from the perspective I want to tell it. Context Same for this chapter. It barely even talked about context, just referred back to the previous chapter and its characters. I get what context is, we use context clues in translations and readings all the time for my other classes. But that’s not even mentioned here. Maybe I just can’t see the meaning of what the author is saying because of the way he phrased it (a qualm I’ve had with the book from the very first sentence), but I see no use in this chapter. Character “Character is a beast of burden… In this way character is also history.” pg. 19-20 These two snippets really stood out to me and resonated with me. The rest of the paragraph in between did not. -Then imagine a broad context for your novel and freewrite, for a page or so, about a particular character within a particular setting within that broader context. You may begin a scene or simply write down ideas that come to mind.
I have an idea for a myth about one of the characters. So far, I have 4 characters that I plan on using in the story. Adonai (the second God), Kit (the MC), Sister Benedictine (Benny, a nun and friend of Kit), and Father David (a priest and friend of Kit). The scene starts with Benny and Kit trying to wrangle kids for story time, a tradition that I fondly remember from my childhood in the Church, that then cuts to the myth itself.
Growing up in the Church, Kit had always been surrounded by stories. Tales as old as time weaving stories about any and everything.
He could vividly remember sitting in a circle in front of the old Priest of his Parish as he read parables to them.
Those were some of his best memories from that time in his life, so when Benny asked if he wanted to join them today he jumped at the chance.
He had lost his chance to lead these story-time circles when he had dropped out of Seminary. While he never regretted that choice, he did miss this. He loved the way the kids’ eyes would light up as he told the parables, the way that they would hang on to every word and every motion of his hands as he told them.
Now, though, he was sitting with his back pressed up against the book lined shelves of the Church’s library as he watched Benny calm the kids.
He watched as she desperately tried to wrangle the handful of restless children. When it became clear that this wouldn’t work, she instead said, “Now come, children. Let me tell yous a story…”
Long ago, before there were humans, there existed two Gods.
One God, Adonai, ruled over the material. They created the world and everything on it, then left the heavens to come live among their creations.
The other God, Elohim, ruled over the spiritual. He is the Universe and the Universe is him. He granted Adonai’s creations the gift of a soul, so that they could have free will.
Under the guiding hand of Elohim, Adonai molded the creation in their image. With the blessing of a soul, this would come to be known as man, Adam in name.
The last thing Adonai created before retreating was the Garden of Eden. A place for mankind to grow and be at peace. At least, that’s what it was supposed to be.
For what he didn’t know as he isolated himself in the remote stretches of woods was that Elohim had planted a thought in the mind of his creation. One that would end with the consumption of the Forbidden Fruit and the start of the Fall of Man.
[these fragments are missing]
… [The] light of Elohim had graced them, telling of the Son of Man that was soon to join them on Earth. They had been asked to oversee the newborn, guide him down the path of light to become humanity’s Messiah.
[another missing section, assumed to be about the life of Jesus the Messiah]
They cried.
As they looked up at the sight of the Son of Man, sacrificed and resurrected once again, they cried.
They cried for the torture that the child had to go through to become the Son of Man. They cried for the souls of their creations, which he had just saved. They cried for the salvation that would spread across the land.
Most importantly, they cried for what was to come.
For they knew that without the Son of Man, that their creations would shun them. Declare them an outcast and punish them. And they were not ready…
[the longest missing passage, assumed to be about The Hunt]
Adonai, having retreated once again, found themselves graced with the light of Elohim.
Tears fell from their eyes as He spoke into being a betrayal.
An apology whispered into the wind as Hunters surrounded Adonai. A curse whispered back as they went down without a fight. After all, who could fight His will?
Seven long days and seven long nights the Hunters traveled. The God could do nothing but watch as they were brought before the Church they had helped create.
For despite their involvement with the creation, they were unknown. They created out of love, and now that love was being repaid with cruelty.
Into the cellar they were led. There they were chained and broken. And there they shall stay.

this is a baffling take- I know the add on is not from a serious person, simply a racist, but let's take the opportunity to address this, because I've seen many odd claims about the nature of historic Arab/Muslim bigotry lately. Historically, and even often today, Muslim bigotry towards Jews and other religions that were granted protected status has not been such that death is prioritized. Muslim bigotry towards other religions, where it does exist, focuses primarily on conversion. "We just wish you'd all convert" as someone I know put it.
Now, in the interest of inducing conversion, Muslim governments have made life difficult and even unbearable for non-Muslims, with periods of ease and strain (because majority Muslim societies are still subject to the currents of human history). The desire to convert people has led to all kinds of horrible suffering, including death, kidnapping, assault, etc. And dhimmitude, as I've pointed out before, was a complicated legal status. It was not a Jewish specific marker of horrible oppression 24/7. For one thing it was still a protected status, which many religions did not enjoy. As someone of a Coptic ethnic background who has has entwined myself with Jewish faith, I find people who act like it was only a form of antisemitic oppression to be deeply insulting.
Additionally- this is not to say Muslim bigotry never resulted in massacres or deaths. Especially in the modern era, with the rise of etnnosupremacy, which is more about what ethnicity you are than a religion (mind you, in the MENA, several groups are functionally ethnoreligious). It is not to say genocides didn't happen- a genocide, in theory, can occur without a single bullet being fired (and again as a Copt, I would not deny that genocides have happened). It is a response to the idea that historically and currently, Arabs (who are mostly Muslim) simply slobber at the idea of killing Jewish people.
Using a fear of Palestinian revenge as justification for the occupation is both wild and familiar
Aint nobody thinking about vengeance after getting freedom 😭 all we wanna do on this planet is drink chilled juice and not die

A Trump indictment angle on an old joke.
Just Security, a site based at the Reiss Center on Law and Security at New York University School of Law, has these estimates of Trump's sentence.
How Much Prison Time Does Former President Trump Face? Applying the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines
It's quite complicated and depends on a lot of factors. But if he...
Doesn't take responsibility for his actions (he never does lol)
Gets the low end of the sentencing level on the most serious charge
Is sentenced to concurrent terms rather than consecutive ones
... his sentence would likely be 210 months (17.5 years). He'd be out in time for the 2042 election.
If I were his attorney, I'd advise him to plead insanity. That might be credible with a jury. 🙂

I bet you can't guess what Minecraft character he was originally inspired by (cough* blatantly ripped off) (I'd like to add that I've been using him separately from his source material for 6 years and I'm too attached to change him 😭)
It's ok I'm cringe but I'm free
