Reminded of my dream last night where my Mom pulled me aside, the way you just know you're in Deep Shit. Once she had me, she lowered her voice, imposing and threatening with an unmatched level of severity. She said, "Listen to me. These are your options. You're either going to stop being aro/ace or you're going to have to deal with the wolf spiders."

And I was like, damn, "So like, what's the best way to deal with wolf spiders?"

She did not elaborate as that was clearly the incorrect answer.

is there any aromantic themed folklore stories?

I think that very much depends on your personal definition. Of course there are plenty of folktales that do not include romance, but for me that usually isn't quite enough to consider them aromantic. For me the folk- and fairy tales that feel the most aromantic to me, are the ones where the plot makes me expect there will be a love interest along the way or a wedding at the end, but instead there is neither.

Here are the ones I've taken a personal liking to so far:

The Shoes That Were Danced to Pieces

Source: Cape Verdian folktale, collected by E. Parsons from Antonio Soares Rosa in 1916-1917.

Character I read as aro: The hero.

Why: He answers a royal proclamation that states that whoever is able to find out how the princess wears out seven pairs of shoes every night can marry her and have half the kingdom. When he accomplishes this, however, he declines the marriage and returns home to build his mother a new house.

How The Devil Married Three Sisters

Source: Italian folktale, published by Widter and Wolf in 1866.

Content warnings: fairy tale violence, abusive spouse.

Character I read as aro: The youngest of the three sisters.

Why: While the first sister is pleased by her handsome suitor (the devil) and the second sister is also described as "wooed and won" by him, the third agrees to marriage only because he is rich. She proceeds to save her sisters, outsmarts the devil, and they all get away.

David Cotterson

Source: Danish fairy tale, collected by Jens Kamp, published in 1879.

Content warning: suicide contemplation, fairy tale violence.

Character I read as aro: The hero, David Cotterson.

Why: His biggest desire is to become a sailor and see the world. In his biggest adventure he defeats a seductive witch, saves a prince who has been cursed to be a dog. He then decided what he wants most of all is to got home to his loving parents, which he does.

The Squire’s Bride

Source: Norwegian folktale, collected by Asbjørnsen and Moe, published 1841-1844.

Content warning: attempted arranged marriage, attempted kidnapping.

Character I read as aro: The heroine, a farmers daughter.

Why: She's being courted by an old, rich squire. She rejects him, not for a better (kinder, younger) suitor, but simply because she doesn't want him. He doesn't back down so she humiliates him to teach him a lesson.

The Three Brothers

Source: German folktale, collected by the brothers Grimm, published 1857.

Content warning: ends with natural death.

Characters I read as aro: The protagonists, three brothers.

Why: Their father tasks them to learn a trade to show who deserves to inherit their family home. They become a master barber, blacksmith and swordsman, and the third inherits the house. But because they love each other so much they decide to share the house. They live happily and grow old together, after which all three die close together and are laid in the same grave.

Diarmaid and Grainne

Source: Celtic legend, Scottish variant collected by H. MacLean in 1859, from Alexander Macalister.

Content warning: tragedy, coercion, murder of protagonist.

Character I read as aro: The warrior Diarmaid.

Why: He has a love spot on his face, which he keeps hidden to prevent women from falling in love with him. Grainne (who is married to his lord Fionn) sees it and falls for him, but he refuses to go with her until she outsmarts him and places him under obligation to do so. He goes with her but they live in a house with separate beds. Grainne betrays Diarmaid for yet another man and Diarmaid ends up being killed by Fionn before he realises that Diarmaid has never touched his wife.

Slawa

Source: Romanian fairy tale, found in a German collection from 1977, sadly unsourced.

Content warning: attempted kidnapping, fairy tale violence.

Character I read as aro: The heroine, Slawa

Why: She is a poor young woman so beautiful that the cruel tsar wants to marry her. She keeps refusing and he gets violent, so she resorts to defeating him with magic (which she has because she was once a doll brought to life through the love of her parents), so she is free to go see the world.

King Bear

Source: Danish folktale, collected by Jens Kamp, published in 1879.

Content warning: animal death.

Character I read as aro: One of the two protagonists, the eldest of two brothers.

Why: The older brother doesn't fully understand why his younger brother has fallen in love with an imprisoned princess, but helps him win her hand anyway. He stays happily at the royal court, but never marries himself.

I think I remember that someone once compared Jung Yeseo to Scum Villain's Shen Qingqiu (Shen Yuan; who are both transmigrators), and Cédric to Luo Binghe but actually thinking about it, it would be more accurate to say that Christelle fits the role of Luo Binghe more.

They're both the original protagonists of the novel(s) who are able to emit that "sticky, clingy, aegyo-esque character infatuated with the MC like a duckling/puppy" energy on the surface, but who are actually pretty brutal on the inside.... it's so gap moe (or should I say reverse gap moe?? Gap Horror). Christelle as a heavenly demon and the Emperor of all realms is also just an amazing vision too. She's rlly the type to act cute with peerless immortal master Jung Yeseo(Jesse Venetiaan)(who, after transmigrating, is only acting peerless and untouchable but is actually The Silly of All Time™) while being ruthless and mischievous behind his back. The kind of character who only shows one bright side and facade while harbouring so much darkness. SO WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING CODED. SHE WOULD FIT SO WELL.

MEANWHILE CÉDRIC....... ISN'T HE MUCH MORE LIKE LIU QINGGE HAHA—both Yeseo and SQQ used them as vehicles at some point in their respective narratives 😭 The one-sided feelings absurdly beautiful and handsome young master from a wealthy family swordsman... Cédric who vows to stand by Yeseo's side like a protector, a silent but devoted sentinel..... War God Cédric who is somewhat aloof yet has his own gap moe tsundere-ness if pushed far enough. The type that would leave presents at Yeseo's doorstep without any more elaboration that would leave Yeseo confused about his intentions.... THE SOCIAL INEPTNESS (BUT HE DOES HIS BEST). IT'S PERFECT.

As much as Elias enjoyed the familiar bustle of the mess, Harrison was right. Eating lunch in the courtyard was so much better than sitting on those awful benches under fluorescent lighting. Here the air was clean and fresh, if a little dusty from the troops running drills in the dried turf.

Harrison, still on a limited diet to account for his starvation, had long since finished his measly helping of mashed potatoes, mushy peas, and mystery meat. Elias was savoring his plate; he never thought he would miss mediocre cafeteria food so badly.

“Hbomb!”

Harrison startled at the shout from across the courtyard, a smile splitting his face as the three stooges bobbed between annoyed patrols.

Parker was leading the charge, stocky and well built enough to dive between the other soldiers in the field like a plow tilling soft earth. Gale followed in his shadow, steps light and measured - showing off his childhood training as a ballet dancer. Moe stumbled after them, glasses knocked askew but saved from falling off his face with sweaty hands.

“You’re looking better, Gomez.” Gale huffed, leaning on Harrison’s wheelchair.

“And I’m chopped liver?” Elias complained half heartedly, an echo of grief in his chest. He missed Thatch and Clements and Orson, his clique even before the taskforce organized. Harrison still had friends here, and the look he shot Elias bled with sympathy. Parker didn’t notice.

“Nah, you’re just still lookin’ the same as before Walker.”

“Glad to know a little torture didn’t damage my good looks.” Elias couldn’t quite strangle his misplaced discomfort with humor.

“Well, it didn’t do you any favors, that’s for sure.” Gale quipped, Parker snorting while Moe cracked a nervous smile, scrubbing his glasses clean with the hem of his shirt.

Elias felt bad for the kid - he was a Private like him, but just behind his cohort. Parker and Gale seemed to tolerate him for his use as a scapegoat, but Moe was just happy to be included. It never sat right with Elias.

“You two got any juicy gossip from the higher ups?” Parker hummed, sitting on the bench between Elias and where Harrison’s chair was parked. He told himself the spike of resentment and stress was just the separation anxiety acting up.

“What do you mean?” Harrison’s laugh was tense, a hand weakly failing to bat away Gale’s arm where it leaned on his chair. Harrison and these three were close before the taskforce. Time didn’t appear to have made the heart grow fonder.

“Haven’t you realized?” Gale finally stood up, gesturing to the throngs of soldiers standing around between drills and marches. “Entire base is on fucking lockdown.” He huffed, as though offended. “First she says we’re on disciplinary leave then we’re on lockdown. Can’t a bitch make up her mind…”

“Watch it Gale.” Harrison’s growl was genuine, and the medic threw up his hands in mock surrender.

“I was just - ”

“No wonder you’re on disciplinary leave.” Elias huffed, poking at the plate on his lap. Moe was still hovering in the background, silent.

“Hey, it was for you, jackass.” Parker shouldered him gently despite his strength. He knew not to push the still recovering soldier too hard, so Elias took his insult lightly.

“What are you talking about? Had to defend our honor like some kinda damsel?” Harrison batted his eyes at Parker, but Gale’s dry hum had a venomous undercurrent.

“Someone had to make sure that fucker knew his place.”

“What?” Harrison’s voice was shaken, and Elias knew he had the same sinking feeling in his gut. Parker shrugged, leaning back on the bench with far less righteous satisfaction in his voice.

“Went down to holding. Roughed up that Wolf you brought back.” Harrison was looking at Parker with abject horror, and he tried to backtrack accordingly. “Just a few hits. Didn’t even break nothin’ - he took it like a champ.”

“You cracked his fucking ribs, jackass.” Elias shoved back a little too hard, swallowing back the anger in his throat.

“I - I pulled my punches, unlike someone.”

“Oh, shut up. You think he took his jacket off just to keep a bit of blood off it?” Gale crossed his arms over his chest, finally taking a step back from where Harrison was seething in his chair. “He wanted a little fight to take the edge off and we gave it to him is all.”

“You had him strip, G.” Moe’s soft voice made Elias suck air through his teeth. Gale would give the poor kid hell for - wait, what did he say?

“I joked that he was being a tease. Fucker didn’t have to - ”

“You made him strip?” Elias’ breath shuddered, words so quiet he wasn’t sure anyone would hear them. He wasn’t hungry anymore. In fact, the cafeteria food wasn’t sitting right with him.

“Hey, he’s the one that took off his pants - I, I didn’t make him do anything.”

“You saw the shape he was in and you still kicked the crap out of him?” Harrison had turned in his chair, but Elias didn’t need to see his face to know the disgust and anger painted on his face.

“Yeah, considering the shape you are in.” There was a thread of discomfort in Gale’s voice, but he was still defensive. Righteously convicted, he continued with a twinge of sincerity. Or at least Elias hoped it was sincerity. “We’re your friends, H. We thought you fucking died out there.”

“And that gives you the right to strip and beat a prisoner who didn’t even fight back?” Harrison’s head whipped back to Elias, eyes bright with anger. “I want to go back inside now, Elias. Are you done?”

“Yeah. Yeah I think I am - ”

“Oh my god Hbomb chill - we’re sorry alright, Gale - we took it too far.” Parker, at the very least, didn’t try to stop Elias from getting up. But Gale grabbed hold of Harrison’s wheelchair.

“Hey!”

“Dude, seriously, he fucking tortured you. Doesn’t he deserve a taste of his own medicine?”

“He’s had plenty now let, me, go.” Harrison’s glare was poisonous, and with Elias rounding on him, Gale finally took the hint and backed off. Not without rolling his eyes in exasperation.

“Fine, fine. Christ, what’s the matter with you? Defending that fucking monster - Stockholm syndrome much?”

“Gale. That’s enough.” At least Parker could keep that jackass busy. Elias pushed Harrison along the path, plate left cold on the bench. It wasn’t like he had the stomach for that mediocre cafeteria slop anyway. Harrison’s muttering was simmering with rage.

“Merrick should have told us - ”

“Protocol. He can’t rat out every asshole on base as a captain. Abuse of power and all.”

“As though they didn’t fucking abuse their power.” Harrison’s stage whisper dropped quieter as they passed a patrol. “God. Elias do you think they - do you think he thought - ?”

“No. And yes.” Those idiots were assholes, but they weren’t monsters. Not like that CIA schmuck that butchered Wolf. But the Wolf wouldn’t know that - he clearly didn’t expect anything less - and god, they weren’t giving him great evidence to the contrary.

“If they knew - ”

“They can’t. Merrick said this stays between us, Fergie, the Frizz and Briggs. And Mav too, I guess.” Elias didn’t like how the temperature dropped - just slightly - as they left the warm glow of the sunlight and entered the medical building.

He hoped the Wolf was having a better afternoon than them.

jock - 2nd gen chinese american, one of the things i liked in the original actually was when they sexualized the jock (probably cause hes the only one who doesnt look 14 in that comic) and his big tits. hes a very genuinely kind guy, not the brightest, has a voracious appetite, he also still bakes cause thats cute i think.

prep - he looks different here because i was originally going to make him white but i decided to make him a light/medium skintone black guy (he just wears a blonde wig and contacts). when companies make their pride month merchandise and advertisements this is the exact person they imagine in their head who is going to buy these products. hes a million percent one of those swifties who thinks taylor swift is secretly a lesbian. trust fund kid btw obviously. his only redeeming quality is that hes good at makeup. jokes in the comic are usually made at his expense.

goth - 1st gen latino american, specifically peruvian because i am a self serving motherfucker. hes a really big numetal fan and listens to like 2000s evil wolf amv music in addition to legitimate gothic. his face changed a little too between this and the final design. his outfit completely changed but its only because i realized everyone else was dressed for relatively warm weather so it wouldnt make sense for him to be wearing multiple layers of black. if i do cold weather outfits for them id def reuse this look for him. hes still trans but i think all of them are in my version. also they dont use labels for their sexual/rom orientation. except prep hes homosexual gay.

General opinion/How much I care about them: Ren Blade Yingxing my beloved beloathed depressed miserable angsty bastard aaaaaaa-

This man, oh my god. This edgy mess is somehow the second fastest blorbo to be coined as such in my blorbo-having history, and I think that alone says a lot. But even if not, he has his special little spot for being: 1) my first HSR fave, 2) my current main (the gameplay is ridiculously fun holy shit), and 3) the reason I downloaded the game at all (shoutout to Bronya, of course, but it was mainly Ren).

Also I really like the fact that he's genuinely batshit insane. An unapologetic menace to the galaxies. He can be so unhinged and evil sometimes, and that's a new flavor of fave in my collection. Did I mention the story doesn't try to redeem him at all? Because it's true! Extremely uncommon win on the hyv writers' part there; doubly so because they manage to balance this aspect with the subtle gap moe they love to give to all their stoic characters.

Yes. Ren is simultaneously edginess incarnate and a tired grandpa that sucks with words and doesn't know shit about technology. Oh and he keeps getting roped into Situations by his colleagues- and goes along with them all the time! The dude was literally asked to pose for a movie cover and he just. did that. No questions asked. Nothing.

I care about him a very normal amount. He's so neat and- oh my god I forgot to mention the aesthetic. Black/blue/red/gold is such a banger color scheme. He also has a spider lily motif and that looks very cool! And the pretty ribbon on the back of his coat is a 10/10 design choice. His only problem is that the game keeps forgetting to edit his silly beta design sneakers out of splash art, and that the washed out jeans clash hard with the coat. But otherwise? Perfection. I could (and did) stare at him for hours on end.

A ship I love: Kafblade is one of those pairs that you can read as romantic or platonic with equal efficacy and I love that for it. They're partners in crime! There's a great sense of trust and faith between them! They're each other's guardian and tether and the one who understands them best and they're such an awesome dynamic, good lord.

Honorable mention goes to jingren for the old man yaoi potential to take the relationship in a very (bitter)sweet or very sad way. There's something to be explored here and I wish canon could give it consideration someday.

A non-romantic relationship that I love: Stellaron Hunter agenda!!! They're so awesome individually and as a group, and the comedy is just lovely. You have Ren wrangling two terribly reckless women because in some way, by some miracle, he happens to be the braincell holder among the three. You have him trailing after Kafka on one of her shopping sprees with a whole bunch of bags and coats, you have him going to an arcade with Silver Wolf because she wanted to show him this brand new game she's been talking about nonstop for four days, and you have him in an impromptu shooting session with them both because they wanted to make silly movie covers and needed an extra actor.

They're one small hilarious family and I adore them so so much, you have no idea. Can't wait until Sam and Elio make an appearance in the story so I get more fuel for shenanigans.

The NOTP: None here sir, as long as the ship is normal it's fine by me.

My biggest headcanon about them: Ren is autistic and you will pry this hc from my cold, dead hands. He's stuck in his own head 80% of the time. He doesn't do conversation at all. Back when he was still Yingxing, he used to spend so much time at the forge when inspiration struck him, to the point of tuning out everything until his friends physically dragged him out to touch grass. He's an autistic nerd through and through, and even several thousand deaths can't take that from him.

An idea for a fanfiction I would like to write/read about them: One idea I've been curious about lately is what would happen in a roleswap scenario, where the Astral Express crew find Ren before the Stellaron Hunters do. He may not make for a great archivist, his state of mind may be less-than-stellar, but it's interesting to imagine the dynamics between him and the crew- and hey, who doesn't love taking sad guys out of situations for a change?

I'm filing this concept for later, just in case. Who knows? The writing ghost visits when I least expect it.

Oh dude, be prepared for a long answer bc I was obsessed with pokemon for the first half of the pandemic so I make teams for characters a lot and I try to put a lot of thought into them, but sometimes it really is just rule of cool.

Starting with Ranni because I don't get her, so her team is basically just themed after her.

Shiny Midnight Lycanroc - She's had this one since she was a child Lunala - in a pokemon au she would have met it instead of the dark moon or maybe it was passed down from Rennala Frosslass - is ghost. is ice. is woman. what more do you want? Mega Banette - Mega bc it looks cooler than normal Banette, but in general it's the possessed doll pokemon so it makes sense to give it to her Mismagius - For the crone that taught her magic Alolan Ninetales - A doglike ice type to round everything out

For Rennala, I did what you would more likely find around her now than the team she may have used in the past.

Clefable - Among her sweetings, there are also members of the entire clefable line scattered around the library, gathering around her as they would the full moon. Shiny Gardevoir - Shiny bc blue to signify that Ranni has left this one to guard her in her slumber. Cresselia - Moon theme and pleasant dreams, it's a crescent moon so idk if this would be her Moon pokemon the way Lunala is Ranni's but it feels right Midday Lycanroc - the red wolf of radagon Hatterene - This one could go one of two ways. It's a witchy looking thing and it attacks anyone who shows too much emotion. This could either be a pokemon the Raya Lucaria scholars left to watch her and make sure she doesn't try anything, or it could be like Gardevoir and one of her children (Rykard in this case) put it there to guard her.

Like Rennala, Radahn's "team" is just the pokemon encountered while fighting him. Which is to say Leonard the mudsdale and various minior that crash down during and after the battle.

Rykard's turn! I know there's not a single snake on this team but hear me out

Magmortar and Delphox - He developed magma sorceries Groudon - This is Eiglay. I know it's not a snake but like. look. Big catastrophe causing thing sealed beneath a volcano. It's Eiglay. Yamask - explicitly the soul of a dead human. Not sure if this is on his team so much as scattered around volcano manor, but it felt important to mention. Magearna - Virgin abductors Mawile - This one is probably Tanith's but I'm not doing a team for her. It's the decoy pokemon, it fits both of them. Tanith is like the main body, Rykard is like the mouth.

Leaving the carians, we have the easiest team so far: Godfrey. Perrserker, Machamp, Incineroar - Self explanatory really, they fight like him. Sirfetch'd - His knights, the decorum he has as Elden Lord, and the Storm King he defeated was a bird. Solgaleo - Serosh, godfrey is sun-aligned. Azumarill - HEAR ME OUT. Huge power + high hp makes it a powerful foe, water to fight against all the different fires that oppose the erdtree, fairy to conquer the dragons, its shiny is gold, and the most important point of all: Gap Moe

I want to make a team for Godwyn, but it's very hard since he doesn't really...have much to him? Haxorus and Kommo-o - Golden + Dragon Roaring Moon - Literally an ancient dragon Cursola - Analagous to deathblight Fortissax isn't in his party, but he would probably be Giratina?

Godrick's team is a joke kinda, but Machamp - 4 arms plus one of Godfrey's iconic pokemon Shiny Magikarp - for the Lord of All That Is Golden Corviknight - For the storm king Dracovish - Grafting! Dragon! It was so hard not to make his entire team galarian fossils bc they're all grafted freaks

For Malenia, I think she would have a different team before her rot got too bad. These three go along with her graceful fighting style pretty well, and since she is a walking toxic status effect...

Bisharp is the only one who survives and evolves into Kingambit. Ceruledge - dual wielding swords, edgy and cool, since it's a ghost she can't kill it by just being near it. She trained it up alongside her cleanrot knights. Quaquaval - a gift from the blind swordsman The last three are some of many nuisances that follow her around at the haligtree. Things that like poison and rot are just attracted to her.

Miquella's team is probably exactly what you'd expect. Silcoon - It doesn't seem to want to hatch... Togetic - "These Pokémon are never seen anywhere near conflict or turmoil. In recent times, they’ve hardly been seen at all." They're also known to bless people, very fitting for what we know about Miq Shaymin - It purifies toxins and grows flowers Comfey - more flowers, more healing, I bet there's a bunch of these around the Halligtree. Musharna - dreamworld pokemon <3 Gardevoir - Counterpart to Malenia's old Gallade. It's his strongest pokemon and only fights to protect him

Marika has no pokemon, she may have at some point, but right now the only pokemon she's around is Ultra Necrozma (The Elden Beast, bc it's golden, evil, a legendary, and from space)

Aaaaaand the last character I'm going to do is Radagon, but if anyone's read this far and wants me to do a specific character outside the god family tree, I'd be hella down.

Zoroark - You Know Why He Has This (it can disguise as humans) Zacian - Radagon seems to be tied to wolves/dogs, plus it has his greatsword Aegislash - this one just feels right Trevenant - for the erdtree Minior - for his elden stars incantation

mc is a guy who can see the future, li is a guy who’s mega lucky but as a result everyone around him is mega unlucky. I thought this was a fun one because 1) when the precognition guy hears about the other guy’s luck he’s like ‘that sounds silly and fake (<-guy who can literally see the future)’, 2) the unlucky guy is extremely moe through helplessness

the li looks stoic but has the disposition of a trembling chihuahua

imo the art’s nice and the character writing’s entertaining but I feel like the overall writing’s a little unpolished—there are times the relationship development/plot could’ve used more coherence. but sometimes the artist really sticks the landing on that weird morose ambiguity, I really liked this part

I can see this series being a hit or miss, but I like the concept and the characters enough to carry whatever I didn’t like

31 Days of Productivity Reading もう一回！: Days 28-29

Day 28: I had a very reading relaxed day. In true fashion of someone who spends the majority of their free time starting at words on paper, I really didn't know what else to do with my free time beyond reading, so I ended up finishing A Psalm for the Wild-Built and returning that to my library, then starting Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit. And yes, I did make a conscious decision to not read in Japanese because I wanted to give myself space.

However, I did indeed still get some Japanese practice in! Not only have I been getting along surprisingly well with doing N2 flashcards (I consistently know 1/3 of them and I'm still on my first time through the deck. So yes, immersion does work!), I also watched a movie in Japanese. I watched カタクリ家の幸福 which is an absurdist horror comedy musical about a family who opens up a bed and breakfast and all of their patrons start dying. I really enjoyed it, even if some of the jokes didn't age very well. It was weird, stupid in parts, visually stunning, and really engaging. I also watched without any subtitles and found it pretty accessible, except for one character who spoke in a fake accent and another who spoke about a hundred words per second. I think I'd recommend it to anyone who already likes weird movies, and especially the specific brand of 90s/2000s Japanese weird.

Day 29: I read a little bit in Japanese today and read 狼の皮をかぶった羊姫 which is a fantasy GL about a wolf butler and a sheep princess. It took me under an hour to get through and that's probably just as much time as I'd like to spend on it. It seemed to rely on kawaii and moe more than actual substance to get the audience to enjoy it. I'm not sure if I'll buy the rest of the series, but I'll at least read what I've got of it. It was also 144 pages long, which completes my goal of 100 pages per day! Even though I'm mostly considering my challenge completed, even though its... not.

Since I'm considering myself largely finished with this challenge, let's take a look at how I did

Read 100 pages of manga OR 25 pages of a novel each day [26/29 - not bad]

Finish reading three novels [2/3 - I'm okay with that]

Read ten volumes of manga [11/10 - crushing the manga game!]

Recently, I've watched an Isekai anime loosely based on Norse mythology, called Master of Ragnarok and Blesser of the Einherjar. I honestly didn't find it anything to write home about (too much moe girl/loli fanservice for my liking - even if I admit I'm not really the right target for that, maybe fans of that kind of thing would appreciate it - plus some interesting ideas and characters that I thought weren't developed in ways that did justice to their potential, a story that somehow rushed by too quickly while also making it feel not much was really happening, and a very rushed ending) but there were some things in it that caught my attention in... an incesty way, so to say.

The anime's about a Japanese boy, Yuuto, who is accidentally sucked into the land of Yggdrasil in the Bronze Age. Yuuto thankfully has his smartphone on him, which is solar-powered and somehow still has a working Internet connection, and he essentialy uses online articles on the historical development of several technologies and military strategy to A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court his way into becoming the Patriarch (chieftain) of the local Wolf Clan and help it progress economically and socially while battling its enemies, with the eventual goal of giving everyone in Yggdrasil, a land of warring clans, a chance at a peaceful life so he can hopefully focus on finding a way to go back to his time and the girl he's in love with. In the process, he ofc gets a bunch of badass girls with all sorts of skills swearing fealty to him as well as becoming romantically interested in him despite him insisting that he's already taken... oh, and he also inspires stories that will one day develop into an oral tradition that will form the basis for Norse mythology.

Thing is, in Yggdrasil, the Patriarch of a clan binds their followers and allies to them by making them take a sacred oath that makes them honorary family. Which is why the girls mentioned above are referred to as his Daughters or Little Sisters according to their rank, and refer to him as either Father or Big Brother in turn. Cue a lot of the fanservice scenes being along the lines of "I want to help Father wash his back in the bath!" "Only after I've had my turn, you're just his Daughter but I'm his Little Sister!" and even some more serious plot points having that "Big Brother, now that we've joined our clans, it would be even more politically convenient if you married me and gave me your seed so I could carry your heirs!" flavor...

But ofc, if it was just that, I'd been sending this ask to your other blog! There's also two biologically related siblings I ship, personally...

Now, the story starts in medias res, with Yuuto already being a successful Patriarch with a formidable reputation. But in later episodes, we find out that when he first dropped into Yggdrasil, he was taken in by the Wolf Clan when he didn't yet know anything about the land or its peoples. Felicia, the daughter of the former Patriarch, was the one who accidentally summoned him, so she took it upon herself to teach him everything he needed to know, falling in love with him in the process, but he also made friends with Loptr, Felicia's older brother, who then became Yuuto's sworn Big Brother. Eventually, however, Loptr and Felicia's aging father, Farbauti, noticed Yuuto's developing skills and literal otherworldly knowledge, and when it came time to name his successor, he picked him over his own biological son. Loptr, who'd always expected the title to pass on to him, was enraged and tried to kill Yuuto, but Farbauti put himself between them and took them blow, dying by Loptr's own hand. After this, Loptr fled and, blaming Yuuto for supposedly scheming to get Farbauti to pick him as heir while pretending to be Loptr's friend, as well as coping with his own patricide by misremembering it as having happened because Yuuto hid behind Farbauti and consciouly used him as a human shield, he swore revenge against Yuuto and married the Panther Clan's Patriarch, Sigyn, to make her give up her position to him and have an army at his disposal to fight the Wolf Clan.

Yuuto blames himself for how things turned out, thinking of himself as some arrogant kid who ruined everything for the Wolf Clan's ruling family by showing off skills that didn't even belong to him but to the historical generals and politicians he read about online, but is willing to fight Loptr to protect the Wolf Clan. Felicia, on the other hand, is still deeply troubled by what happened, but she both loves Yuuto and thinks he's a great Patriarch, so even if it pains her, she'll pick him over Loptr every time.

As for Loptr... he's willfully bling to Felicia's real feelings. And I say "willfully" because, when things were fine between the three of them, he was very aware of Felicia being in love with Yuuto and even gave him a cheerful yet not-so-joking "you make my little sis suffer and I kill you" speech. But when he later writes her to ask her to ditch Yuuto and join him and she sends a reply along the lines of "back off, the only older brother I'm loyal to is Big Brother"? Clearly his beloved sister could have never written anything like that, that dastardly Yuuto just sent him back a fake letter to try and tear down his morale! It takes him attacking Yuuto directly during a battle and Felicia literally jumping in between them to convince him that no, she's not actually on his side... and let's just say, he doesn't take it well, violently throwing her aside. Yuuto even seems to believe he might kill her over it, as he references Farbauti's death by saying he doesn't want anyone else to die for his sake! Unfortunately, we kinda have to take his word for it as, due to the abrupt ending, we don't really know if Loptr could have really gone that far, but I choose to believe he wouldn't. Like, he'd probably fight her and harm her, but kill? She's the only family he has left and, despite everything, he still loves her... or at least, he feels very possessive of her.

Something else that might be interesting from a Loptr/Felicia shipping perspective is Loptr's marriage to Sigyn. In the anime, she's clearly in love with him and he at least seems to like her well enough: she's always initiating physical affection but he never shies away from it, they're briefly shown having sex and cuddling and talking after, he thinks of her as a great resource on the battlefield, and the one time he gets mad at her is when Yuuto knocks Loptr out and she uses her magic (she's one of the most powerful witches in Yggdrasil) to send him back to modern Japan out of fear Yuuto may kill him, depriving Loptr of the chance to get revenge, but even then, he calms down pretty quickly when she cuddles up to him and tells him she only did it because she couldn't lose him as both the Patriarch of her clan and her husband. However, I've read that in the light novel the anime is based on, Loptr is apparently very cold to Sigyn, explicitly seeing her only as a tool that allowed him to rise to power and an advantage in battle, and when she sends Yuuto back, he's a lot angrier, stopping just short of hitting Sigyn herself. Which sucks, obviously, and I'm glad the anime didn't go to that extreme and made him a bit more likeable and their relationship healthier... but it also makes me wonder if Felicia was really the only important woman in his life in the light novel!

... Oh! Master of Ragnarok anon, here again! I was so focused on Loptr and Felicia that, somehow, I completely forgot about another ship! Albertina and Christina are twin sisters and princesses from the Claw Clan. Their father sends them to Yuuto so that he may take one of them as his bride and the other as concubine, but they end up becoming his Daughters instead, working for him as bodyguards and information gatherers. Albertina is the oldest, but she's very naive and childlike. Christina is the youngest, but she's very mischievous and loves to tease people. They both develop a certain attraction towards Yuuto, but Christina is also very possessive of Albertina and, in the end, she mainly just seems to want her twin all to herself... it doesn't hurt that her favorite target for her pranks is Albertina, and no matter how much she embarrasses her and berates her, in private and in public, she seems to do it at least in part because she finds Albertina irresistibly cute when she's flustered. Their very introduction has them falling on top of each other in a rather suggestive way due to one of Christina's pranks. Because of how inseparable they are, Yuuto ends up combining their nicknames, Al and Chris, and calling them Alchris when he's addressing both of them, like they're a single unit.

This sounds so angsty and painful! As wrong as Loptr is, I can't help but feel sorry for him. I'll be imagining a happy reconciliation for the siblings!
