Perpetual Conversion
Read on Ao3
Ei Irulac, Last of Her Coven, keeled over and died quite pathetically. It was unsurprising given her condition (an arc staff piercing her through like a shish kebab), but kind of cringe nonetheless, the dying scream she shrilled hoarse and strangled and her limbs flailing about awkwardly. The staff's owner walked up to her prone body and yanked the weapon free, with their other hand reaching for her Ghost. It twitched frantically as five gore-splattered fingers curled around its core and squeezed hard.
The Guardian then kicked the body, clasped the staff to the harness on their back, and leaped into a nearby mirror, chucking a grenade behind them as an extra safety measure.
A long while passed.
The unstable Arc charge was beginning to fizzle out by the time Šimmumah Ur-Nokru stepped into the chamber, eyeing Irulac's body impassively. A few of her Acolytes scuttled behind her.
She floated up to the Ghost's shatters, sprinkled on the floor right next to the corpse. The Acolytes spread out in a five-meter-radius circle and began drawing the runes.
Three incantations and one botched rune resulting in Šimmumah briefly experiencing an eyehole hemorrhage later, Ei Irulac cracked her middle eye open and peered up at the necromancer with a bemused expression. Her Ghost was still shaking off its freshly reassembled shell.
"Do try to be a little gentler next time," it chided, glaring at Šimmumah (though its optic was still recalibration, which ruined the effect a little). "I can feel all my insides jingling."
"Do try to refrain from dying next time," one of the Acolytes barked back.
Irulac drew herself unsteadily to her full height.
"I feared they would break the conduit," she said. The chamber was still strewn with blood and gore, floorboards marred with cracks and soot staining the bullet-ridden walls. Šimmumah only gave the mess around a fleeting glance.
"The experiment was a success, fortuitously." She turned with a flutter of robes and beckoned Irulac to follow with a gesture. The group of Acolytes swarmed around them like ducklings. "The First Ghost has asked about you. I shan’t tell him what a sorry display this was."

Do you know anything else about Ur-Nokru other than that they were in the strange terrain strike? Nokris is my fave but it’s kinda hard to find any lore about his followers
Unfortunately not! We only know him as a follower of Nokris and that he was in Strange Terrain. I only remember him because I played Strange Terrain an ungodly amount of times (it was my fave and really good to do bounties in) and because I love when Hive have full on Sumerian names. So I immediately remembered the name.
Šimmumah means "priest" or "high priest" in Sumerian btw. The name fully would be "High Priest of Nokris." So at least through the name, we can tell a little bit.
Super glad to see him pop up again as a Lucent Necromancer. So much potential to explore this. Necromancy, but with Light?? Why would you need it if Light resurrects anyway? But then we saw him trying to do it to someone who hasn't been rezed by Light. Incredibly interesting angle that I never considered before. I hope we hear more.

hello!! i have a random questions about simmumah ur-nokru, do they have confirmed pronouns?? I've seen a lot of people in like ghost of the deep articles and videos just use she/her because "wizard = female" (even though hive genders aren't that but i acknowledge a lot of them are referred to with she/her pronouns in game and lore) BUT i've also heard "he/him" be used. i know nokris is one of the few he/him wizards we know so it wouldn't be a stretch to have another in his brood but then again, i'm not totally caught up in lore 😅 i know there's not a whole lot about simmumah but i'm just curious!
Yeah, Šimmumah is a he/him. It says so in the dungeon!
The mechanic to get rid of Šimmumah's shield revolves around killing a knight called Vorlog on a specific spot. When a Vorlog is killed there, the mechanic to remove the shield starts and the text in the dungeon says that "Vorlog is slain at the [location], calling Šimmumah to his death."
Some people interpreted this as meaning that the Vorlog is calling Šimmumah to his own (Vorlog's) death, but that doesn't fit with what the mechanic is about. Vorlog's death is what literally allows us to damage Šimmumah which means that Vorlog calls Šimmumah to his (Šimmumah's) death. And also, once the dps phase is over, there's another message which says that Šimmumah "denies death." So the whole mechanic and the messages refer to the boss, meaning that Šimmumah is he/him canonically.
It definitely also makes sense to me considering Nokris is also he/him wizard and Šimmumah is his high priest.

hi hello pretty please share ur thoughts on the dungeon when you've done it :D
This is the best dungeon ever and my favourite one. Absolutely insane what they gave us here.
Xivu Arath voice lines from her past and about Oryx and everything. Finally Xivu Arath POV and what a way to deliver it.
Arcology!!!! Stuff about the Collapse on Titan on weapon lore! Just as I wanted.
ŠIMMUMAH UR-NOKRU who I recognised as soon as I saw the name of the encounter. THIS IS HOW NOKRIS CAN STILL COME BACK AS A LIGHTBEARER!!!! I can't believe it, they actually made this guy a Lucent Necromancer. Fave fave fave.
And of course. Seeing Oryx's body. Man. The experience is unparalleled. The whole idea to rez him with Lucent Necromancy is insane. Really really good.
Amazing environments, really cool encounters, amazing looking armou sets, 10/10. I have yet to read the full lore, but so far from what I've seen it's incredibly good. Especially the stuff about Xivu and Oryx.

Thank you for your additions!! The ending of the Vexcalibur quests + the Scribetracer shell loretab implies Asher got subsumed by the Vex network, but it's not clear and also Kabr's Glass Aegis lore exists, so it is entirely possible to be subsumed by the network and retain your personhood in its entirety. And this is what I choose to believe.
34. Ir Anûk & Ir Halak - the only way to unlock their Grimoire cards is killing them at Crota's death ceremony in Last Rites, they come back later in the raid. They're also the creators of the Oversoul, so it would be strange if they didn't have any means of preventing themselves from dying
35. Šimmumah Ur-Nokru - killed in Warmind, comes back as Lucent
36. Ecthar, Sword of Oryx / Shield of Savathûn - killed in TTK, comes back as Lucent
37. Vorlog - one of the Court of Oryx bosses, comes back as "risen in heresy" in Ghosts of the Deep and killing him over and over is part of the mechanics. Where do you keep all these corpses Sav????
38. Kudazad, Binder of Savathûn / Bound to Xivu Arath - a high value target from Titan, later their skull is found by Kelgorath and they get resurrected to serve Xivu Arath
39. Val Ca'uor - Spire of Stars boss who later gets resurrected and Taken by Xivu Arath, returning in Season of the Deep
40. Praksis the Technocrat / the Defiled - killed in Beyond Light, returns as a Scorn in Seraph
41. Phyris / Once-Phyris, the Exhumed Tether - Eramis' friend who was resurrected as a Scorn after death
42. Kabr - Kabr's Glass Aegis loretab quite bluntly says "i speak again and was wrong i am still him and i am now them" (a reference to iirc The Aegis grimoire card, where Kabr's last words are "If I speak again, I am not Kabr"), so. There.
43. Also you know whom I forgot the first, and second, and third time around? Fucking Uldren Sov / Crow
I’ve been haunted by this idea since yesterday so there it is, all Destiny characters who died and then it was revealed they were still, in one way or another, alive (in no particular order):
Taniks, the Scarred - a classic. died four (five?) times and it’s inferred he’s not quite done yet because I heard that after you defeat him in DSC you can still hear him laugh
Omnigul - died, then canonically came back (“undid her death”), which infers she has a throne world, and as we have yet to kill her in her throne world, she’s most likely still vibing there
Saint-14 - we’ve SEEN his grave, then Season of Dawn happened
Tevis Larsen - we see his body in the Black Garden, then years later Aspect is released and tells us how his consciousness is in fact very much alive and trapped there
Praedyth - we see his skeleton in the Vault, then, once again, Aspect is released and tells us he is still in some way trapped there. Now time is a blurry mush when the Vex are involved, but I believe what’s happening in Aspect is being caused by either the Darkness closing in on Sol or the Lunar pyramid stirring - so as this is a paracausal force, it can very well mess with Praedyth’s fate and allow him to escape the Vault safely before he dies there. If you want to debate this, @ing me is very welcomed!!
Ir Yût - we kill her in Crota’s throne world, but then she can be seen attending his death ceremony in TTK
The Undying Mind - the name says it all. We kill it twice in D1 and then it comes back yet again in Season of the Undying
Xol - we kill him in Warmind, but in the Whisper mission he still whispers to us and it’s inferred he actually lives, in some way, within the Whisper of the Worm sniper rifle
Mara Sov - she literally died in TTK and came back only because she found a way to escape into Oryx’s throne world and then into her own
Toland - he died (at least his body was sundered) but then also Ascended and is now an orb
Omar Agah - Eris (and all of us) believed him to be dead, but then we learn in Shadowkeep he’s actually a bug
Asher Mir - the Exodus quest and lorebook made it seem like he died, but then the friendly Harpy morse-codes “ASSISTANT” to us, so like… you know
Ana Bray - believed to be dead at Twilight Gap, turned out to actually be in hiding so she could discover her past
Lady Efrideet - believed to be dead by everyone including her closest friends (Saladin and Tyra), turned out to have run off to form a pacifist colony in the outer system
Nokris - we kill him in Warmind, he later comes back in Season of Arrivals
Sepiks Prime - we kill him in D1 vanilla, in RoI is ressurected by SIVA
Atheon - we canonically kill him again in TTK as a part of the No Time to Explain quest
Techeun Shuro Chi - believed to have died in the battle of Saturn, turned out she was Taken and later freed by Guardians
Techeun Sedia - same as above
Techeun Kalli - same as above
Paladin Leona Bryl - believed to have died in the battle of Saturn, turned out she survived and later was supportive of Petra in the political clash about whether she should take the position of Queen or not
Urzok, Aspect of Hate - formerly Urzok, the Hated, killed by Guardians and later resurrected and Taken by Xol, fought again in the Whisper mission
Drevis, Aspect of Darkness - formerly Drevis, Wolf Baroness, killed by Guardians and later resurrected by Xol in the same manner as Urzok
Ta'aurc, Aspect of War - formerly Valus Ta’aurc (yes, the Valus Ta’aurc), killed by Guardians and later resurrected by Xol. He is encountered yet again in Dares of Eternity, and from Xûr’s words it appears he recognises his killer so it’s still the same person
Crota - killed by Guardians, encountered again in Dares of Eternity - from Xûr’s words it appears he recognises his killer so it’s still the same person
Zydron, Gate Lord - same as above
This list is, by no means, complete, because Bungie can’t keep a corpse a corpse and we will probably see more of dead characters returning to life in the future.
