Thank you! The nickname Ran Ran was made during the time TOTK wasn't released and no one knew of Rauru's name, so I came up with it. For the second part of your question, I'm going to need some clarification as I'm a little confused on what you are asking. For the first part, I actually made a fan child between the two!

Here is my Rauru/Sonia fan child, Solis!

For Solis' design, I did my best to combine both Zonai and Hyrulean features. Solis would have ears that are longer than Sonia's but smaller than Rauru's. Her facial features do lean a bit more on the Zonai aspect, especially from the forehead to nose, but from there it's similar to a Hyrulean. Her skin is fur-like/fuzzy with scales. The rest of her body is proportioned normally unlike Zonai, with her long neck being an outlier.

General Info: Solis was a child of King Rauru and Queen Sonia. As a child, she was free spirited, with her sense of adventure and curiosity sometimes getting her into trouble. She would often sneak off from her studies to watch her father hunt or to pick berries with her mother, but always made up for time lost. Her family would teach her to love and care for everything around her and she was a happy princess in their care.

Sadly, that happiness would be taken away after tragedy befell her home. After the death of her mother, father, and aunt, young Solis became mute, and a shut in. Due to her shift in personality and being too young to take the throne at that time, others in her family would take a temporary charge in her stead. It would take many years after the Imprisoning War for her to open up again, slowly coming out of her bubble and enjoying the world around her.

As a fully grown adult, she hopes she can make her family proud and be a strong, kind ruler just like her parents.

Your knowledge of medieval stuff is really impressive! You said in the tags of that ask you answered that you majored in literature? I would love to hear more about your passion for medieval literature and just medieval times in general. Did it start with Kingdom of Heaven or were you interested in it long before watching the film?

Ahh, I'm glad you think so, thank you! ☺️

I did my BA with a major in German literature and linguistics and a minor in English lit. For my MA (which I'm almost finished with save for my thesis defence), I switched to English full-time. My interest in medieval literature is really something that came with my studies - I've always had a general interest in history and read lots of historical fiction while in school, but I'd had basically no exposure to medieval texts (or the knowledge to engage somewhat meaningfully with them) until I had to take my first compulsory "Introduction to Medieval Literature" class at uni. From then on, I just kind of fell in love with the subject. We had a great prof - a really cool older lady who gave the most engaging lectures and with whom I later took seminars on topics like the medieval idea of monsters or animal depictions in chivalric romance.

Within all things medieval, the area that perhaps fascinates me the most is medievalism studies, which is a sort of sub-discipline of medieval studies that investigates, broadly speaking, the reception and depiction of the Middle Ages as well as medieval texts and topics in post-medieval media. Idk why it had to be that field in particular, but there's just something so beautiful in finding parallels and continuities between our world and the medieval one, especially since misconceptions about the Middle Ages are still so prevalent. Unsurprisingly, I wrote both of my dissertations on such medieval/modern overlaps: In my BA thesis I looked into the portrayal and function of mentor-mentee relationships in medieval literature and modern adolescent fiction (lots of commonalities there, interestingly enough!), whereas in my MA diss I focused on the construction of dystopian scenarios in recent British Arthurian fiction and how these respond not only to the older Arthurian material but also to present-day environmental and political anxieties. (Sounds a bit complicated but it makes sense, I promise.)

Perhaps this is why KoH has had such a chokehold on me these past 4 years. It's such a flawed piece of media that it makes me want to dig my teeth into it, in an academic as well as a fic-writing sense. There are so many moments in it that could be right out of a chivalric romance, yet also so many others where the film blows its pretence to historicity to all hell; there are so many interesting characters who only scratch at the surface of the historical figures behind them, and simply so much wasted potential. It's just ... ahhh.

The funny thing is that my growing interest in medieval literature kind of coincided with me discovering KoH, which in turn made me dig even deeper into the research side of things (a vicious circle lol). I think I wrote another post on this about a year ago, but me discovering - or rather re-discovering - Kingdom of Heaven was basically the result of the following chain reaction: I somehow stumbled upon an old novel covering the same events as KoH (Graham Shelby's The Knights of Dark Renown) > something in that book's depiction of Raymond of Tripoli scratched my brain in the right place > I investigated further and found KoH > I saw that skrunkly Mr Irons was part of the cast and decided I had to watch it immediately. In such matters I'm a simple girl - nothing will incite me to watch a film more than an old history man being hot 😂

And then half-way through the film I remembered I'd actually seen it before - with my former best friend during the early years of secondary school when she was obsessed (and by that I mean obsessed) with Orlando Bloom and made me watch literally every film with him that she could get her hands on. Which was a good thing only insofar as it made me discover Lord of the Rings. Though in hindsight it's very funny because she clearly intended for me to join her in her Orlando insanity, whereas confused 11-year-old me instead stared at Aragorn and Tiberias like this: 😳. Yes, I've always had impeccable taste, obviously.

And thus, in the spring of the year of our Lord 2020, I entered my KoH era, and so far the brainrot is still thriving.

I do wonder, though, how many people in the fandom have a similar background? The handful of people that I know or have interacted with seem to skew that way, with mostly history- or literature-related fields of study, but I wonder how representative they are of the overall fandom 🤔

At first, they are confused. You look a little like a human, one of those new and hip pets, but you are so small, naked and you drool a lot. Are you perhaps some kind of a human larva?

Autobots immediately try to find your parents because every organic has someone taking care of them. If they can't find your parents, they try to get you fostered so you would grow up in a familiar environment, raised by creatures who are like you.

If they can't find anyone to take you in, they make the decision to keep you. It's not easy and they realize that it takes a lot to care for a baby, but Autobots are diligent and try to raise you right.

If you grow up with them and learn to walk, speak and such, you become less of a pet and more of a family member. They cherish you and promise to keep you safe, no matter what.

Decepticons couldn't care less and they would leave you be, but unlike others, Megatron sees the potential of having to raise a human from their larva state all the way to adulthood.

If you grow up with Decepticons, you turn into a perfect little Decepticon agent, willing to spy on your owner's enemies and if needed, sabotage them.

You might be small and organic, but you are agile and thanks to your pet status, mechs and creatures all alike let their guard down around you because they think you are just a stupid pet.

They couldn't be more wrong, but by the time they realize this, you are long gone with everything you were sent to get. Megatron couldn't be more pleased with you.

How You Two Met

The two of you had always been classmates growing up, always in the same circles but never really interacting. You were within each other's orbits. Two people on different paths constantly passing by.

It was no surprise to anyone when the two of you managed to go to the same college, despite never saying a word to each other. And it was at college where the two of you were finally forced into the same situation.

Sometimes you just had to thank group projects for something.

You take the paper with the group project rubric from your professor, giving it a glance over while you meandered your way to the corner of the room. Three people are already seated in the area — your partners for the semester. Two of them were chatting with each other, absorbed in their own animated conversation. The last one seemed to only glance up when you approached. You recognized him instantly.

"Mayuzumi," you greeted, giving him a single nod. He responded in kind, nodding as well. "Lumi."

"Oh great, you two already know each other, then?" one of your other group partners asked. She gave you a grin, looking between you and the silver haired male. "Let's split the project up 50/50 then. I'm sure it would be more comfortable if you worked with your friend."

How He Fell For You

When he first started interacting with you, Mayuzumi thought you would be too similar to him; quiet, nonchalant, honestly a little bit boring to the initial eye. But he was wrong. And pleasantly surprised.

Your personality shined through when you both communicated through text and he found it easier getting to know you when the two of you were apart versus when you were in the same room. He liked the elaborate little pictures you would make, sending strings of emojis that would spell out a story. It was like a game of charades.

He knew from the moment he started to find you interesting that he was falling for you. Now the problem was, how would he ask you out?

"They're idiots!" you complained over text, sending a slew of emojis after the words. Some were angry, some were exasperated, most were annoyed.

It had Mayuzumi's lips quirking into a subtle smile as he read the conversation between the two of you. You were complaining about the group project — specifically, you were complaining about the lack of help from your other two partners — and Mayuzumi was doing nothing but agreeing with you, further fueling your anger.

"We should just split off and do it ourselves. Screw them!" you texted again after a while and it gave him a good idea. He quickly responded, liking the sound of working with you one on one. "Yeah, let's do that, Lumi."

What a Relationship with Him is Like

Out in public, the two of you are a rather naturally quiet couple. Coffee dates often consist of the both of you sitting quietly at a table with your own drinks in hand, Mayuzumi reading a novel while you played around with a game. It was never lonely, but rather a comfortable feeling sticking around his side.

Out of the public eye, however, Mayuzumi shows you a bit more of his romantic side. Gentle caresses and sweet kisses to the top of your head, loving gestures and suprise gifts. He'd never admit it, but he took a lot of his cues on romance from the novels he read.

All in all, a relationship with Mayuzumi is soothing, relaxing, and easy. As if the two of you were meant to cross each other's orbits all along.

Walking outside, the two of you were hand in hand as you made your way home from the cafe date that had just been completed. You were only a few steps away from the cafe when Mayuzumi suddenly switched sides with you on the sidewalk, putting himself between you and the road. It had you quirking a brow before a small, amused smile crossed your features.

"What?" Mayuzumi asked, his own subtle smile matching your own. He already knew what you were thinking, but after hearing you confirm his thoughts, his smile only grew. "So what if I read that in a book somewhere? It works, doesn't it? Just like this."

And as Mayuzumi said the last part, he brought the back of your hand up to meet his lips, giving your skin a soft kiss that had your cheeks flooding with heat.

Camp NaNoWriMo Day 23 Wrap-Up

Project: Risky Business

Words Written: 1329 | Total Words: 30522 (Completed 🥳)

Thoughts: I am at a loss for words. I didn't expect to reach my goal a week before the end of the month. I am satisfied and very proud. Working this month was more fulfilling than I expected. I wrote some of my favourite scenes and discovered meaningful details about my characters that will allow me to rewrite this story better. I still have to write a bit before I can say this draft is done, but I am looking forward to it every step of the way.

Despite having reached my goal already, I will continue to do these updates until the end of the month just to have an idea of how many words I can write!
