when i made ankita my thoughts were centered around the concept of playing a wizard who staunchly refused to take a spell that could in any way inherently cause damage.

that said, i ended up making him an owlin, which would necessitate him being a carnivore because owls don't have the capability to digest plants. sometime i'll actually talk more about why he's a burrowing owl specifically because the amount of natural predators they have plays into his storyline very well as well as the "false rattlesnake" tactic of scaring them away BUT that's not what this post is about.

anyway, i ended up fascinated by the concept of a character who was helpless in the face of his own nature getting the chance, finally, to choose whether he wanted to apply his nature to his interactions with humanoid sentience or even non-predatory violence, and then to choose pacifism.

i think the character messaging would have been far less effective if he had been an omnivore from the start, ha.

sorry for talking at length about ankita when i still don't have his bio up. but anyway!

when i was first making ankita, i came to the decision that the root behind his pacifism was a lack of desire to be the arbiter in anyone's fate. and that's true ...

... sort of. this actually only holds true throughout the bulk of his backstory and the very first sliver of the main campaign. ankita's desire for "pacifistic neutrality" stems from his view of himself as deeply incapable of changing things. when he's presented with a situation in which he can be of some use to other people, he involves himself almost immediately, making a show to both himself and the people around him that he doesn't inherently have his own safety and involvement at the top of his priorities—it only comes into play when he feels he can't solve a problem.

the first time he manages to really, truly help someone or something, he does come to the realization that he was only hiding behind the idea of keeping himself clean and staying out of things because it meant that every other time he did that in the past when he could have stepped in he was wrong to have done that.

he doesn't want to be the deciding factor in whether someone lives or dies, sure, but he's much more willing now to take action and involve himself TRYING to do some good for the world, as opposed to sitting down and doing nothing.
