Every year, on all Sunday afternoons between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the New York Teansit Museum runs some old cars on the 1 line between Chambers St and 137th St. It really feels like time travel! #nytransitmuseum (at New York City, NY) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmVNB47DXny/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#DYK that landmark designation of the #NYCsubway began in November 1973 with the Battery Park Control House? Designed by Heins & LaFarge, it was chosen because of its status as “one of the original stations built for the City’s first subway line and one of the last remaining." pic.twitter.com/2TKp5IZHze

City of Women!  While the names of accomplished men abound in New York City – Astor Place, Bleecker Street, Lincoln Center, Rockefeller Center, Washington Park, and Madison Avenue, to name a few – names of women of merit are not often used to identify public works and infrastructure. But on September 19th, an updated City of Women map will be unveiled at the NY Transit Museum! Joshua Jelly-Schapiro, co-editor of Nonstop Metropolis and co-creator of the City of Women map, will join journalist Julie Scelfo for a conversation on the significance of mapping the unsung heroines of New York City’s cultural history. With over 80 new names added to represent each of the subway’s 424 stations, City of Women 2.0 will further celebrate and memorialize women who have shaped New York City from the very beginning.
For tickets: nytransitmuseum.org/cityofwomen.

We recently had the opportunity to spend the day on a Track Geometry Car (TGC4) as it inspected the 8th Avenue Line from Jay St – Metrotech to 207th Street. The TGC4 features special equipment to measure track geometry, and can even detect flaws inside the rail with ultrasonic sound waves. Track geometry equipment inspects the rails for visible defects such as warp, alignment, cross-level, curvature, rail gauge, and visible cracks or splits. It also checks the third rail to make sure it is in gauge and there are no “hot spots”, where poor electrical conductivity can cause the third rail to heat up. The front of the Track Geometry Car is equipped with bright lights and visible/infrared cameras to capture videos at various angles of the tracks and the third rail, allowing crew to see the tracks clearly.
The ultrasonic equipment in TGC4 checks for defects inside of the rail that cannot be seen with the cameras on the TGC. This includes: transverse fissures (long narrow cracks), compound fissures, broken rails, and split webs. To test the rails ultrasonically, the car is equipped with small rubber wheels that have ultrasonic transducers in them. The transducers inside the rubber wheels bounce ultrasonic sound waves off of the rail at different angles to search for defects that can’t be seen by eye. The ultrasonic sound waves don’t travel well through air, so the TGC has its own water supply, which it squirts on the rails to make sure that the ultrasonic waves propagate cleanly in and out of the rail.

In this May 1964 photograph, Car 9627 “poses” outside the World’s Fair grounds in Flushing Queens. It’s one of the “Bluebird” subway cars that rolled on the IRT Flushing Line to take visitors to the fair. In the 1980’s, they were repainted red and re-nicknamed “Redbirds”. pic.twitter.com/TJnLnSYmYS

#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 1953, #NYCsubway tokens debuted. Its distinctive design quickly became a #NYC icon, and over the course of 50 years eight tokens were minted. What’s your favorite variation of the token? Do you have any old tokens at home? Post a photo and tag us! pic.twitter.com/2qquC6XATB

This 1913 image from the #NYTMCollection shows a trolley traveling over the Williamsburg Bridge into Brooklyn from the Essex Trolley Terminal. Remnants of the old trolley terminal, which closed in 1948, are still visible today from the platform at the Essex Street J/M/Z station. pic.twitter.com/5vtIuYThIl

#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 1883, a Brooklyn Bridge cable-powered railway opened between #Manhattan and #Brooklyn. Cable cars were moved by steam-driven machinery in a powerhouse, which continuously drew a loop of wire cables through a slot beneath the street. pic.twitter.com/vUssgqUeD7
