One thing I've been noticing on the Couple of Mirrors rewatch is how multiple people reference or ask the question of how Xu Youyi met Zhou Heng. It's one of the questions Xie Yifan asks in their interview, and it stays unanswered. I really like that, because you don't assume that the way they met was anything out of the ordinary, that there might have been anything less than harmonious and happy about their relationship before Zhou Heng started cheating on Xu Youyi. But at the same time, the question is asked and never answered. The natural assumption is that it was a happy moment, and then you find out that it really, really wasn't.

#couple of mirrors #[talk less smile more]#/i feel like it's a bit of a reveal. not only of the plot in general and something that's very important to xu youyi's character #/but of a fundamental part of this relationship. it starts in a horrible traumatic way for xu youyi!#/and that obviously doesn't mean that she was never happy in this relationship. she absolutely was and that's good #/she doesn't exactly meet yan wei during the best time in her life either #/but in addition to the reveals about zhou heng's jealousy... it does give you the feeling that that marriage was rotten to the core.#/especially since xu youyi is in such a vulnerable position when zhou heng starts courting her
