That last post reminds me, it’s time for today’s…
Clive Update!
In preparation for the upcoming all-campus fashion show, I have a “banger” of a new announcement from the staff: Naranja-Uva should be introducing new uniform pieces soon!
Let’s sneak a peek at some of this gucci new fashion.
First up, the one you’ve all been waiting for:
✨Skirts✨ 👁️👁️ 💃
That’s right, our new uniform revamp includes skirts, for everyone to slay! We have created a maxi, midi, and mid-thigh variant available (with built-in safety shorts!). Let your skirt-spinning dreams come true!
[A GIF of Clive spinning in the Academy’s new maxi skirt, with a heavy glitter filter and heart stickers applied.]
Next up, a revamp of an outfit favorite:
⛑️🦺Vests🦺⛑️
Thanks to student feedback (“shout out” to Penny, for creating a Goomyle Forms survey!), the staff has learned you find our vests a little… bleh. Perhaps too much “construction worker” and not enough “working it”.
Our old ones will still be available (we see you, Arven!), but our new vests are a more classic argyle knit in an easily pairable neutral tone, still complete with the pockets you all love!
[Another GIF, with a flame effect on the bottom, showing Clive fitting an entire Rotom Phone snugly into his vest’s pocket, followed by a thumbs up.]
Today’s final reveal will be… 🥁
☁️☁️☁️Hoodies☁️☁️☁️
Because serious study doesn’t mean serious stuffiness. Because your casual style can’t be cramped.
The new Naranja-Uva Academy Hoodie is seriously soft, packed with ethically-sourced Wooloo wool. And it comes with lots of elevated touches, from the embroidered school insignia to the mock collar, cuffs, and shirttails. Get hyped!
[A GIF of Penny and Clive, wearing sunglasses and the new hoodies, shoulder to shoulder with arms crossed. They are nodding in confident approval. For some reason, this one looks professionally shot…?]
Look forward to seeing more on the academy website soon about our updated uniform regulations!
¡Vive Naranja y Uva! 🍊🍇🤩🧑‍🎓

HPHM Character Profile
Tagged by @unforgivablecurse-breaker in @cynicaljapanophile‘s awesome profile maker for our MC’s - Thank you so much for tagging me and creating this! =D
Okay, think I’m finally finished with it! Really, thank you for tagging me because it helped me figure out some new things about my MC, as well as help me more with creating her parent’s backstory, and even helping me with the godparents as well who I had no real information determined yet! So this was very beneficial for me, thank you! (I also kind of want to do this for my Jacob too...)
General Information -
Name: Nereida Adelyn-Keira Black
Age: 16 (currently)
Gender: Female
Nickname(s): Keira, Adelyn (primarily, doesn’t like her first name much like Tonks)
Ady (by Jacob and Charlie),
Reida (by Remus),
Black (by Merula primarily, sometimes Andre especially if it’s on the Quidditch Pitch, sometimes Talbott when she calls him Winger, sometimes others),
B (Penny and Jae),
Lyn (sometimes by Jacob, usually when he needs her attention for something serious),
Cuz (by Tonks),
Beater Buddy/Roomie (by Barnaby),
Canada (by Jae when she agrees to bring him things to sell from the country, by Andre when it’s revealed she’s playing for the country in the World Cup) - (there’s probably more personal ones her friends call her)
Date of Birth: 11 February 1973
Astrological/ Zodiac Sign: Aquarius
Ethnicity: Irish, French, English
Nationality: Irish & Canadian
Species: Witch, Undine
Blood Type: AB Rh+
Blood Status: Half-Blood
Family:
Father: Orion Black -
Husband and second-cousin of Walburga Black
Father of Sirius, Regulus, Jacob, and Keira
Met Vivian-Caer while out in Knockturn Alley one day, became infatuated with her and eventually wooed her into becoming his mistress (post about Orion and Vivian-Caer and their relationship to come)
Attended Hogwarts - Slytherin
While he supported Voldemort and the Death Eaters and believed in blood purity, never became a Death Eater himself
The more powerful and forceful the Death Eaters became ultimately leading to a war led to him placing more and more protection spells on his home (possibly realizing how bad this all was and backing away a bit from the Death Eaters beliefs)
Passes away in 1979
Mother: Vivian-Caer LaFontaine -
Named after the Lady of the Lake and the Celtic goddess of dreams and transformations known for her beautiful, hypnotic singing voice.
Born in Nice, France
Attended Académie de Magie Beauxbâtons
Moved to Ireland (home of her mother and maternal side of the family) where she eventually met Orion
Passes away in November 1978
(A post about Orion and Vivian-Caer and their relationship to come)
Godfather: Owen Pearce -
Welsh/English heritage
From Prince Edward Island
Played Professional Quidditch in Vancouver where he met his wife
Met Vivian when she travelled over to work with his wife. Developed a brother-sister type relationship with her.
Godmother: Alona Pearce -
First Nations from British Columbia
Practices her culture’s alchemy which is more focused on the elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Wind) than metals
Met her husband when he searched for a Healer outside his team for his persistent shoulder pain (he didn’t want to just keep drinking potions to manage it)
Met and worked with Vivian when she travelled over for her job. Became fast friends, almost like sisters.
Other:
Remus Lupin - Guardian while she’s in the UK/Ireland and going to school. Calls him “Uncle Remus” (post on their relationship to come)
Nymphadora Tonks - They were very surprised to find out they were related to each other when Tonks confided in Keira her aunt was Bellatrix LeStrange which Keira recognized from the family tree in 12 Grimmauld Place she just recently moved into after Walburga’s passing. Andromeda had been burnt off the tree and her husband and Tonks were never added so Keira had no idea! Call each other cuz/cousins (even though Keira would technically be her aunt but since they’re the same age they feel more like cousins. Keira would call/consider Bellatrix her aunt)
Sirius and Regulus Black - Older half-brothers. Awkward introductions by Orion after Vivian demanded that her kids meet their siblings after having Keira. Neither Keira or Jacob really remember Regulus much after their one time meeting. Sirius however was taken by Vivian’s kindness and warm welcoming, much different than living with his mum, and would sometimes stop by to ‘hang out’ with his little siblings in a much more comfortable environment than at his home. While living with the Potters gave him loving parents he lacked, visiting Vivian, Jacob, and Keira gave him the sibling bonding without feeling like he was competing with them or was lesser than them. (Probably wished he was raised with them like he wished he was raised by the Potters his whole life instead). Continued to write to them when they moved to Canada. Told the Marauders about them.
Alpharden Jacob-Taylor Black - Her big brother, best friend, and partner in crime. It’s them against the world.
Affiliation(s)/ Organization(s):
The Most Ancient and Noble House of Black
Orion - Affiliated with the Death Eaters although never joined himself and possibly began to disagree with them while the threat of war was imminent.
Vivian-Caer - Académie de Magie Beauxbâtons
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
Team Canada
Occupation(s):
Vivian-Caer LaFontaine - Magical Historian, Archeologist, and Author specializing in Native cultural beliefs, practices, and artefacts
Owen Pearce - Quidditch Scout/Recruiter, Former Professional Quidditch Keeper
Alona Pearce - Healer and Alchemist
Jacob-Taylor Black - Professional Quidditch Keeper
Adelyn-Keira Black - Student (currently); Curse-Breaker
Magical Characteristics -
Form of Boggart:
Being manipulated and betrayed by her friends/those she cares about, who never truly were her friends/cared about her and only used her
Leaves her feeling humiliated, ashamed, and completely alone praying on her insecurities, trust issues, and pride
Being open and vulnerable and trusting others is hard for her so to do so and then find out it was a lie would be incredibly hard on her and make her feel violated
Realizing and admitting she had been manipulated would be a huge blow to her pride and intelligence. She doesn’t like feeling stupid or being blindsided, prefers to be prepared and have the upperhand.
Form of Patronus: Arctic Fox (might change)
Form of Riddikulus:
(This is such a great question, I’ve never really thought about it and have no real idea what would make this funny)
Maybe her friends laughing, dancing, and messing around together, probably reminiscent of past happy moments.
What do they see in the Mirror of Erised?:
Jacob and her reunited together again
Their mom, godparents, Remus, and some other shadowy silhouettes representing their family
She’s no longer alone and lost and feels supported
Wand(s)
First Wand -Length: Eleven and a half inches -Flexibility: Solid -Wood: Hazel -Core: Undine Hair Description:
Hazel often reflects its owner’s emotional state, and works best for a master who understands and can manage their own feelings. Others should be very careful handling a hazel wand if its owner has recently lost their temper, or suffered a serious disappointment, because the wand will absorb such energy and discharge it unpredictably. The positive aspect of a hazel wand more than makes up for such minor discomforts, however, for it is capable of outstanding magic in the hands of the skillful, and is so devoted to its owner that it often ‘wilts’ at the end of its master’s life (if the core is unicorn hair, however, there is no hope; the wand will almost certainly have ‘died’). Hazel wands also have the unique ability to detect water underground, and will emit silvery, tear-shaped puffs of smoke if passing over concealed springs and wells.
Undine Hair Core - (Swear I wrote something about this but I can’t find it!) From grandmother (possibly her mom’s old wand); Elegant spell casting; Temperamental but loyal; Skilled in Transfigurations and Charms.
Solid - Extremely loyal. Owners of this wand are generally known for their reliability, their friendliness, and their character. They may find it difficult to understand views that differ from their own but are usually able to politely disagree. (Not exactly sold on all the flexibilities but nbd)
Stained grey with detailed carvings
Second Wand:
-Length: Eleven and a quarter inches -Flexibility: Hard -Wood: Ebony -Core: Dragon Heartstring. Description:
This jet-black wand wood has an impressive appearance and reputation, being highly suited to all manner of combative magic, and to Transfiguration. Ebony is happiest in the hand of those with the courage to be themselves. Frequently non-conformist, highly individual or comfortable with the status of outsider. In my experience the ebony wand’s perfect match is one who will hold fast to his or her beliefs, no matter what the external pressure, and will not be swayed lightly from their purpose.
Dragon Heartstring Core - Produces wands with the most power, and which are capable of the most flamboyant spells. Tend to learn more quickly than other types. While they can change allegiance if won from their original master, they always bond strongly with the current owner.Tends to be easiest to turn to the Dark Arts, though it will not incline that way of its own accord. Somewhat temperamental.
Hard - Loyalty is not easily won. Great for complex and advanced levels of magic. This type of wand is best suited for wizards and witches who are gifted, stubborn, and never give up. Some people may find them intimidating or difficult to approach. (Not exactly sold on all the flexibilities but nbd)
Black with a slight sheen, carved out handle
Third Wand (What?! Yes =p):
-Length: Eleven inches -Flexibility: Surprisingly Swishy -Wood: Blue Spruce -Core: Undine Hair Description:
First Nations have used Blue Spruce for medicinal and ceremonial purposes, twigs given as gifts for good fortune - therefore, this type of wand is more commonly passed down as a gift rather than bought, typically done in families; this may mean this wand chooses those who have strong ties to their families. Also like other spruces, the Blue Spruce does not do well in nervous, cautious hands but will bond to its chosen partner, typically a bold spell-caster with a good sense of humour, be intensely loyal, and capable of producing dramatic effects. However, while other spruce variations may be hardier, the Blue Spruce is more flexible and adaptable. It has also been shown to do well with non-verbal magic.
Undine Hair -  Elegant spell casting; Temperamental but loyal; Skilled in Transfigurations and Charms.
Surprisingly Swishy -  Either is surprisingly loyal or surprisingly unloyal and is most often known for doing the unexpected. Great for charm work. Owners that are matched with wands of this flexibility are usually the type of people who have a hard time coming out of their shell or opening up, but once they do, others will find themselves drawn to their charming, fun-loving personalities. The owner usually adapts well to unexpected changes but may find it difficult to make hard decisions. (Not exactly sold on all the flexibilities but nbd)
Gift passed down from her mom (given by her godmother since her birth mother is dead); Her mom (with help of her godmother) chose and had this wand made for her to be given to her (as well as one for Jacob as well).
Silvery-Blue with intricate symbolic carvings and carved out handle
(Post about Keira’s different wands and her personal growth to come)
Animagus: Arctic Fox
Amortentia:
Rain/Petrichor (reminds her of the Quidditch Pitch which she associates with Jacob; rain has always been very calming and peaceful for her)
Salty Sea Air (reminds her of her mom and Jacob)
Honeysuckle (reminds her of Charlie and the burrow/Weasley family)
Chocolate (reminds her of Remus)
Maple (reminds of her Canada and her ‘adopted’ parents)
Appearance -
Height: 5′6″ / 169 cm
Weight: ~135-145 lbs
(Currently probably around 135, but when she starts training and competing in the World Cup over the summer and for Year 6 will gain more muscle)
Complexion(skin tone/ conditions):
Pale
Cold to the touch, particularly hands and feet (ice cold =p)
Somewhat sensitive skin, becomes red easily
Commonly has some bruises from Quidditch and Cursed-Vaults adventures.
Earns some scars as well from Quidditch and Cursed-Vaults adventures.
Watermark - her skin will begin to grow scales if she doesn’t regularly consume water or submerges herself in it; quite painful.
Hair Color/ Style:
Black with hint of red, primarily visible in the sunlight.
Has a natural wave to it.
Length is either to bottom of shoulder blades or just above the tops of the shoulders - When she started Hogwarts her hair was longer but cut it shorter for Fifth year and will probably keep that length for a while.
Normally wears it down or up in a ponytail. Sometimes will put it up in a messy bun mainly to get it up out of her face and off her neck.
She can wake up with it looking perfect/”perfectly messy” - Classic House of Black Hair =p
Eye Color: Grey-Blue
Hogwarts Information -
Worst Class(es):
Herbology - No green thumb and she doesn’t really like digging around in the soil/fertilizer and getting her hands literally dirty.
Potions - She just hates this class because Snape can be such an arse to her because of Jacob (and Sirius) and while sometimes it can be fun for her to exchange quips with him other times it is very distracting and he’s not at all helpful when she’s trying to learn how to brew potions. (He was much worse towards Jacob though).
Elective: Arithmancy - Just no. She’ll let Bill handle that =p
Best Class(es):
Charms - She loves Professor Flitwick and truly does love this subject and has shown a natural talent for it.
Defense Against the Dark Arts - She has a protective nature and fighting spirit, enjoys fighting/duelling and the rush of adrenaline
History of Magic - Actually likes history, although she may not exactly enjoy the boring lectures by Professor Binns, she does love reading and learning about the subject on her own. Also likes getting to have a sort of free period with her friends.
Elective: Alchemy - Her ‘adopted’ mom piqued her interest in the subject and she is eager to learn all aspects of it even if she has to demand to be taught this course as a lone student interested in it.
Least Favourite Teacher(s):
Professor Snape - While they have a more complex relationship than he has with Jacob (or Sirius) and he treated Jacob way worse than her, Keira struggles a lot in Potions because of the lack of help from Snape and his constant hatred towards members of her family. Although they are able to get along sometimes, normally when it benefits them both, or when it’s a sort of Slytherin vs. others type of situation. Even though he can give her a hard time Keira still teases him that he truly likes her deep, deep...deep down. (If he hasn’t yet,) I headcanon that he does teach her Sectumsempra. (But she will never forgive him for what he does to Remus)
Professor Trelawney - Seriously?! How is she supposed to take this class and this Professor seriously? She can’t. This class is riddikulus.
Favourite Teacher(s):
Professor Flitwick - He has always been on of her favourite teachers - great teacher, passion for his job, kind and helpful to his students, overall and understanding and warm person. But what really does it for her is Flitwick’s views on Werewolves. She hates ever having to lie to him and honestly tries not to.
Quidditch:
Beater (Joins team in Year Four)
Captain (Year Five-Year Seven)
World Cup Champion - Team Canada (1990 - summer before Year Seven)
Favourite Spell(s):
Any water/ice or fire related spells (e.g. Aguamenti, Aqua Erecto, Glacius, Freeze, Incendio, Firestorm, Flagrante Curse, Fumos)
Any spells that can knock back an opponent or cause an explosion (e.g. Bombarda, Confringo, Depulso, Everte Statum)
Snowflake-creating spell
Protego
Carpe Retractum
Sectumsempra
Arania Exumai (she hates spiders!)
Cantis (yes she will make people burst into song =p)
Trivia -
(Random facts about them, future job, face claim, theme song, etc.)
Random Facts:
Speaks English and French, and knows a little Russian, ISL/Irish, and Carrier
Plays piano
Jacob was supposed to teach her to play guitar
Hat stall between Slytherin and Ravenclaw
Slytherin Prefect
Has a Siamese Cat
INFJ-A
Probably a True Neutral (or somewhere on the Neutral spectrum)
Uncomfortably with physical affection and needs plenty of time to feel comfortable with someone before engaging. (Honestly probably took until Year 5 for her to comfortably hug her friends, although some she felt more comfortable with sooner than others like Tonks)
Beautiful singing voice, used to be shy about it but grows to be more confident with it (and in general) since she does love to sing - also didn’t like singing without Jacob though
Normally good at hiding her negative emotions
Can become overwhelmed and anxious which causes her to submerge herself in the nearest body of water to calm herself down (e.g. Black Lake, Prefect’s Bath, Courtyard Fountain) Might be because of her Undine genes but being underwater quiets everything down and helps her calm down and brings a sense of peace
Wants to be able to create her own spells like Badeea - teach her the ways!
Fiercely protective of those she cares about, primarily Remus
Receives and sends out a care package once a month from and to “Uncle Remus” - normally filled with chocolate (and wolfsbane which she takes to making after learning how)
A female Sirius =p
Can be quite flirtatious as long as there are no real feelings behind it (she doesn’t believe anyone would actually be interested in her romantically, surprised she even has friends who like her for her, but if someone convinced her they did have feelings for her she might not know how to function =p)
Moves into 12 Grimmauld Place after Walburga passes (and no one else is doing anything with it!)
Moves Barnaby in with her officially summer before Year Six (even though summer before Year Five her basically spent all his time there and stayed with Keira either there or at Hogwarts during the holidays)
Her interest in History most likely stems from her mom
Her mom spending time in Egypt as a Historian/Archeologist before she was born probably influences Keira to become a Curse-Breaker there to feel a sort of connection to her mom - like maybe she explored this tomb too or shopped at this market. Maybe someone here worked with her and remembers her. (Not just about Bill =p)
Sentimental Items - Celtic Warrior Ring (given by her mom to her and Jacob); a quilt made by her mom (on for her and one for Jacob); an old Golden Snitch from Jacob; a House of Black crest cameo necklace
Has no interest or plans to get married or have children
Gifted Bill his leather jacket (that becomes a signature look for him =p)
Future Job: Curse-Breaker (with her partner Bill Weasley)
Face-claim:
Megan Fox
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or Alexandra Daddario
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bonus: Jacob & Keira (although she’d probably never wear pink =p)

10 Tips for Setting Up a Blog and Reaching 1 Million Hits https://ift.tt/2TlBRDR
I set my blog up in 2014 purely to help fundraise for a charity walk along 2000-year-old World Heritage site of Hadrian’s Wall. But it also gave me a platform to tell my story – awareness of Neuroendocrine Cancer was also a listed aim of the adventure.
In the beginning, I had to rely on family and friends but I slowly attracted a small patient following. However, at this time, I had no inkling that it would become anything other than a low-level storytelling effort with a temporary life span, eventually to be signed to internet ‘shelfware’.  After my charity walk, I kept the blog open and reasonably lively but I confess that was just to scrape in a few more pennies!  Readers demanded more words and I complied.
Fast forward 4 years, I recently won the 2018 WEGO Health ‘Best in Show: Blog’ award and it was the third attempt having made the finals in 2016 and 2017.  I’m actually a user of many different platforms and apps for my advocacy work but the blog was the one I really wanted to win. My blog functioned as the foundation for everything else, it was central.
While trying to win the blog award in 2016, I actually won the Best in Show: Community award. This was a shock but made me think of my advocacy work in a totally different way. The accolades that followed made me realize that all the different social media accounts I used to share my blog, were, in fact, functioning as a community. I guess that’s why more people voted for the community nomination than the blog one.  The community aspect has actually changed the way I blog and is something I’m still developing today.
I’m so thankful to WEGO Health for giving me this platform for my advocacy work and for making me realize I was doing something important, something people actually wanted. Moreover, I found that people outside my community were actually interested. Being a WEGO Health Award winner has opened up new doors, allowing me to develop myself as a patient leader and to help and collaborate with others outside my own community.
As I write this article, I have almost 810,000 views of my blog site and I’m scheduled to pass the ‘magic million’ mark around June 2019 based on current averages.  I suppose that’s not bad for a condition not many people have even heard of?
So.… what happened between 2014 and 2018?
What is the secret of my apparent success in setting up a blog and attracting so many followers?
Actually, there is no secret; I’m not even sure how I managed it other than hard work.  I just plowed on doing what I thought was right.  There’s a saying along the lines of “doing things right” and “doing the right things”.  Some will say that the latter is more strategic thinking and the former is more tactical thinking. Using this analogy, I guess I started off tactically by trying to do things right and then gradually (without realizing I was doing it), I became more strategic in my approach by ‘doing the right things’.  Having now written my 10 tips below, I can see that change developing.
When WEGO Health asked me to share my top tips and advice for blogging, I initially gulped because I didn’t have anything documented, I didn’t know exactly how I went from 10 hits per day to an average of one thousand.  Sometimes as a patient advocate and a blogger, I feel like I have been more responsive than proactive in my activities.  However, in accepting this task from the WEGO Health team, it suddenly dawned on me that my sub-conscious way to doing things is perhaps something that needs to be documented in the hope that others may benefit.
So here goes:
Best In Show: Blog Winner Ronny Allan’s 10 tips for setting up a blog and reaching one million hits

  1. Find yourself a blogging app
There are many around.  I use WordPress, I find it relatively easy but like all the other apps, it takes a while to get used to all the features.  I eventually upgraded my package to provide better capability and features.  I advise starting with the free version which will be sufficient for most.
  2. Find Yourself an Audience
Most health advocates will have a condition in mind and most will already be a patient with that condition or be caring for one.  Others may operate on a wider basis or a specific aspect of living with the condition, perhaps a campaigning aim.  Decide if you are focussed on a single geographical region or open to international patients.  My condition is not that common, so I was eventually forced to go international to expand, although many patients came to me due to the power of the internet – if you build it, they will come. Just be aware of language, cultural and healthcare differences in place (it’s a steep learning curve).  It’s fairly easy to set up Google translate in WordPress.
  3. Find yourself a brand
I didn’t give this much thought at the beginning but there is some scope for change downstream. If possible, try to make the big changes early on.  I’m still working on this one!
  4. Study and understand your audience
This is really a follow on from finding the audience.  If you’re dealing with the same condition, it really helps with the understanding. I actually joined a number of forums/groups/email subscriptions and read (lurked) a lot before my blog really took off.  I was, therefore, able to hit the ground running in terms of what I understood the key issues to be (although when I read some of my early blog posts, I often cringe).  That said, some of my early posts remain my most successful.
  5. Tell them about you
Do this first. This was easy for me as I had written a patient story well before my blog was set up. I had all the medical letters and reports so it was relatively easy to document that in as much ‘patient speak’ as possible and in a way that others could compare and empathize. This is a very individual thing, some stick to the ‘technical aspects’ of their condition, others focus on life impacts. Personally, I try to avoid a ‘pity party’ and try to focus on the positives. That said, I can talk about the horrible aspects but in the context of a particular subject with a particular aim in mind – even positive patients have vulnerabilities.  In fact, I often add in personal stories in the opening or closing lines of my articles, this is a combination of setting the scene or for emphasizing.
  6. Listen and learn from your audience
Just when I think, I’ve written about ‘everything’, a subject comes along which not only resonates personally but also seems like something that needs to be ‘fleshed’ out, something that needs an answer or at least some thought leadership.  Often there can be a common thread on many different forums but the answer seems to be quite elusive. I look at those scenarios as challenges and an article frequently follows. Sometimes the ideas come thick and fast and the draft section of my blog site is always full of ideas.  I set up my own closed Facebook group 12 months ago which is providing a whole new learning (and humbling) experience and blogging ideas.
  7.  Grow
If you want to get to the ‘million club’, you need to grow your followers and find more outlets to share your material.  My following is totally 100% organic (nothing purchased) and that goes for all my social media platforms.  After a year of blogging, I decided to set up a Facebook and Twitter account to match my blog site (on a much smaller scale, I also use Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn and Google Plus).  Facebook made the biggest difference – I actually have 5 Facebook pages for various purposes. All of these need sites to be public to allow people to find and share your material.  I also use a newsletter feature based on Twitter. Again, there are a few of these around but I use Nuzzel, I find it really easy to use, I can add stuff directly to the app and schedule accordingly.  I find this is now competing with Twitter as the second biggest source of hits.  I also use Buffer, a scheduling tool which allows me to post many items up to 2 or 3 days in advance. I currently only use it for Twitter posts. My Facebook posts are often scheduled directly in the Facebook tool but many are ad hoc. If you have an international following, consider the time zones of your main country groupings.
  8. Knowledge is not power
I pride myself on researching from the most impeccable and trustworthy sources (some at my own cost). With a less common and complex disease, this is really important – the internet is a dangerous place, full of fake news, myths, snake oil sellers and other such quackery. Many of my posts are written in the style that I have used since day 1 – something which takes away the complexity and mystery in order that patients can understand what is being said.  Most posts will have reference articles or other links for those who like the detail.  This knowledge should be free to all patients and not held close to the chests of doctors and other healthcare professionals. In order to spread this further, I set up a closed Facebook group 12 months ago which has really taken off. The group is based on all the principles in this article.
  9. Try to be consistent
If your posts start to appear contradictory or you have wildly differing views on the same subject, you will ‘draw fire’.  I think I have stuck to my guns on the vast majority of subjects, clearly, healthcare is a moving picture so older articles may need tweaking, updating, or in some cases deleting (although I tend to ‘reinvent’ those to build on the existing hits within my statistics).
  10.  Be ‘You’
I try to put over the human side in all my articles. I’m just a wee Scottish guy with a computer and a complex and less common disease.  I write about things I think people want to hear about (having done 1-9 above). I can relate to other people with the same condition and they appear to relate to me.  I try my best to put over what I think about living with Neuroendocrine Cancer and how to best advocate for myself and others.  I’m a naturally positive person so that comes out in my posts but I can still empathize and sympathize with others having a bad time.  It seems to work and I will, therefore, continue to be ‘me’ going forward.

Online Education and Coding: 5 Websites to Learn Coding for Free
The following is a guest post by Colin Simpson, a project management professional with experience in the IT industry. If you would like to submit a guest post, please contact us.
“Coding is not for everyone!” Said no one ever in the modern world. Gone are the days when coding was considered to be only for a few nerds who could spend endless hours in front of a computer screen. Today, coding is a fundamental life skill that helps freelancers, marketers, and entrepreneurs excel at what they are doing.
Coding for yourself is empowering. It allows you to transform your idea into reality. If you are a blogger, coding can help you create an intuitive blog. If you are an entrepreneur, coding can help you with your product idea. Also, coding is one of the popular Education Trends that will Shape the 2019-2020 Academic Year.
Why should you learn to code?
You must be thinking, why learn to code when there are programmers you can hire?
Well, when you code for yourself, you can reduce your dependence on others and execute your idea exactly like it is in your head. The added cost advantage can be a cherry on the top.
For many of us, having the basic programming knowledge will mean that any developer cannot fool you into thinking that an idea is impossible to convert into a program. When you know how to code, you can work on your vision without relying on anyone else.
Why are online methods a great way to learn coding?
The internet has been a great facilitator and has changed every aspect of our life- from shopping to entertainment. Similarly, when we think of education, online learning has completely revolutionized the domain. Anyone can learn using the internet without thinking about the distance, time or language barrier.
When we think of coding, there cannot be a better way to learn coding than the internet. For the instructors too, teaching coding via the internet is really easy. They can provide real-time support and relatable examples by using technology and connectivity, without any trouble of setting up and maintaining physical infrastructure. This way, a lot of resources and time get saved and teachers can concentrate on teaching, instead of other aspects.
Many companies prefer hiring developers who have learned programming on their own or via online learning. We also prefer such candidates and it helped us to become the top app development company in San Diego.
5 Websites to Learn Coding for Free
In the age of the internet, all you need to learn coding is just a reliable internet connection and a laptop. The rest you can discover and try on your own. Here are 5 amazing resources you can use to learn coding without spending even a single penny:
1. Code.org
One of the biggest coding resources on the internet, the website offers detailed guides and tutorials on how to code.
Code.org is really popular among amateur coders and aspirants who want to learn coding. This is because of the presence of several tutorials, applications and guides that are offered by Code.org partners, making the website a large repository of learning resources. Being a non-profit initiative, code.org aims to promote the concept of code learning among school and college-going children.
One can learn how to develop games for school children, JavaScript programming and a lot of other exciting things.
Apart from self-paced tutorials, the website also conducts specific lessons in the form of lectures by famous programmers and instructors for easy learning.
2. Codeacademy
Codeacademy has been used by more than 45 million people all over the globe to learn coding. An educational company that believes in making programming more engaging, Codeacademy offers useful courses in HTML, CSS, SQL, JavaScript, C++, Python, among other courses.
One can learn several technical aspects associated with coding through self-paced courses on a wide range of programming languages.
3. MIT Open Courseware
MIT Open Courseware is ideal for someone who has already cleared the basic stages and wants to learn advanced concepts. An initiative of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Open Courseware gives you a chance to take up language-specific courses on C++, MatLab, Java and other programming languages.
One can also learn more about programming concepts and other innovative technologies using the Open Courseware website.
4. Khan Academy
Khan Academy was developed by an educator, Salman Khan in 2006 and is one of the most genuine free eLearning platforms. There are several dedicated courses and video tutorials on the platform that can help you in learning how to code, how to create webpages with HTML, CSS.
A special program on the website, ‘Hour of Code’ also teaches students more about computer science and programming.
Students can share their learnings with other students and this kind of shared learning model creates more engagement. Apart from instructor-led courses, there are several specialized courses and learning material that you can utilize to create your own extensive code learning repository.
5. Web Fundamentals
A project by Google for web developers, Web Fundamentals has a large number of free resources like tutorials, guides and walkthroughs to learn the nuances of HTML5 coding. Being an open-source platform, one can use the HTML5 code to learn several aspects of advanced coding and programming.
Recommended for someone with basic programming knowledge, this website can serve as a useful resource if you want to refine your skills, grow as a programmer and achieve bigger things with your coding knowledge.
Wrapping Up
Learning to code is no longer an expensive ordeal. The online medium is quite an affordable way to learn coding. Anyone from a school-going kid to an adult can grasp coding fundamentals and use them to his/her benefit by learning to code online. Coding can be especially a useful skill if you plan to launch your own startup or wish to make a career in the STEM industry.
As it is said, a little extra knowledge is never harmful. So, you should not shy away from donning your learning hats and start learning to code, right away!

Original Post from SC Magazine Author: Doug Olenick
Any competent business advisor would likely tell a client that spending $76,000 in order to potentially fend off an incident that could cost that organizations millions of dollars would be money well spent.
There are no easy answers when it comes to ransom payments.
But what happens to that calculus when the outlay is a ransom demanded by cybercriminals who managed to infiltrate your computer network, encrypt all your files leading to a complete shutdown of operations?
With hundreds of publicly disclosed ransomware attacks to study the unfortunate answer is there is no easy answer.
That is the quandary business owners, municipal governments, school administrators and even librarians are now facing as more and more of these folks arrive at one morning, turn on their PC and find themselves staring at a computer screen that will only display a plaintext message from their attackers demanding a certain amount in bitcoin in exchange for the keys needed to decrypt their data.
Once this point is reached there are basically three courses of action an organization can take. Pay the ransom and take the chance the bad guys will do as promised and send along the decrypt keys; begin the recovery process using an established plan and backed up data; or refuse to pay the ransom and then try to rebuild from scratch.
Two major U.S. cities recently found themselves in the latter position.
When Atlanta was hit with SamSam ransomware in March 2018 it refused to pay the $51,000 ransom demand with the end result of being unable to work around the encryption and then spending $17 million and many weeks to rebuild its network. Baltimore is now in the same boat having refused to pay the attackers $76,000 and instead is looking at a potential $18 million bill and months of repair work to get back online from Robbinhood ransomware.
Jackson County, Ga., decided to take the other route and caved to the demand paying its attacker $400,000 in March 2019 for the decryption keys. In this case the gamble paid off as County Manager Kevin Poe told SC Media. The county was willing to take the chance that the criminals would honor their word and let them regain access because there was no other choice.
Poe said forensic evidence showed the county had little choice as network had been infiltrated for quite some time and the attackers were able to essentially throw a switch and turn everything off, including its 911 emergency system.
Most recently on June 17 Riviera Beach, Fla., shelled out 65 bitcoins, almost $600,000, in an attempt to regain access to its completely shuttered network. To add insult to injury the city also had to spend more than $900,000 to replace damaged computer equipment.
While paying the ransom or dealing with the exorbitant recovery costs are bad enough, one company opted to simply go out of business. Brookside ENT and Hearing Center in Battle Creek, Mich., made this choice after being hit in April. The company told local TV station WWMT that when the $6,500 payment was not received all their files were wiped, so the doctors simply decided to close up shop and retire early.
Chris Bates, vice president of security strategy at SentinelOne, said there is only one truly correct answer to the problem. Take a proactive approach and update legacy defense systems susceptible to sophisticated attacks, in addition to allocating additional resources to security team staffing, training and support because the odds of regaining access to your data is not in the victim’s favor.
“Riviera Beach took the opposite approach of Baltimore but paying the ransom is not the answer either as recent research shows us that 45 percent of U.S. companies hit with a ransomware attack paid at least one ransom, but only 26 percent of these companies had their files unlocked. Furthermore, organizations that paid the ransoms were targeted and attacked again 73 percent of the time as attackers treat paying companies like ATMs,” he told SC Media, citing the SentinelOne 2018 Global Ransomware Research Report.
The FBI’s 2018 Internet Crime Report states there were 1,493 ransomware cases reported last year costing each victim on average $3.6 million. The FBI did list a few caveats with that figure noting it does not include estimates of lost business, time, wages, files, equipment, or any third party remediation services acquired by a victim. Also, not every victim reports a loss and some under represent the figure.
Forrester Senior Analyst Josh Zelonis believes the option of paying the ransom, while odious, is a perfectly legitimate business decision to make calling the Baltimore Mayor Jack Young’s immediate decision to not pay “shortsighted” adding emotion has to be removed from the equation when deciding how to get a business or city back up and running.
“Forrester’s guidance is not a recommendation of whether or not to pay a ransom but to recognize paying the ransom as a valid recovery path that should be explored in parallel with other recovery efforts to ensure that you’re making the best decision for your organization,” he wrote.
There are also other factors to consider before the desperate maneuver of paying the ransom is contemplated. DeGrippo said some entities, like schools for example, do not have to rush a decision as there is time and possibly additional resources that can be brought to bear in an attempt to recover. However, a hospital lacks that luxury. It could be a matter of life or death if it cannot return to full operations immediately. In this case a ransom may have to be paid if it has the ability to eventually regain access on its own.
The hard decision will have to be when all resources are exhausted and access cannot be regained. DeGrippo laid out the math that should lead to the proper answer for any organization.
“When it comes to deciding on whether to pay a ransom, organizations must compare the benefits of paying against the moral and financial costs of not paying up. If the attacked organization backed up their data five minutes before the attack and can restore that data in hours – they will be less likely to pay. A hospital or medical center might not have that luxury, so simply paying might be their only option for keeping patients safe,” she said.
She added that in her experience it is likely the decryption keys will be supplied allowing the victim to get back online.
But for those entities that do not follow Bates’ advice and prepare in advance there are steps that can be taken to help mitigate the situation and possibly help even fully recover.
The first is possibly the most obvious, disconnect the impacted devices from the network and inform IT, said Sherrod DeGrippo, senior director of threat research and detection at Proofpoint.
“Once disconnected, information security operations teams must determine the scope of the attack. Not all ransomware is the same. To properly respond it’s crucial to determine the attack type, who on the network is compromised, and what network permissions the compromised users may have,” DeGrippo said, adding law enforcement and other outside resources should be brought in at this time.
“The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the federal government’s lead civilian cybersecurity agency, has a number of resources to help state, local, tribal and territorial governments defend against the growing threat of ransomware.  This includes exchanging the latest threat information, providing technical services and expertise, and supporting incident response,” said Scott McConnell, press secretary for CISA.
As beneficial as these steps and resources are to a victim they are still being taken after the proverbial horse has left the barn. What is required is action prior to the event.
As has been stated, being prepared with the proper security in place and backups ready to go is a necessity for any company or municipality and while it helps to have deep pockets to pay for advanced levels of protection those organizations that have to count their pennies can still take precautions.
Ionut Nechita, threat labs senior analyst at Comodo Cybersecurity, suggests restricting normal users access, so when ransomware is accidentally started, it cannot do as much damage from a limited account.
“Given ransomware is typically known to target and delete backups, having a backup of critical data, ideally in a different location, can keep your data away from attackers,” Nechita said.
Although it seems to be a no-brainer by now, organizations should not underestimate the power of simply having good cyber hygiene. System administrators should patch and update software and there are federal and state-level resources available to help organizations prepare.
CISA has outreach programs that include a recorded webinar on combating ransomware along with a 24/7 watch center that analyzes and disseminates threat and mitigation information to critical infrastructure partners in both the public and private sectors. The organization also provides exercise support, risk and vulnerability assessments, and incident response from our Hunt and Incident Response Teams.

10 Tips for Setting Up a Blog and Reaching 1 Million Hits

10 Tips for Setting Up a Blog and Reaching 1 Million Hits

Introduction
My description of what this blog is about is very vague. However, every post for every day I go to work will give more in depth detail of what exactly my work environment is like. This introduction may also do some justice. I welcome you to this introduction and blog and thank you in advance.
Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get started with some important background information. So first of all, I have never had a job before. The reason being me applying to many places, but none calling back. My job I have now is technically a mistake. I filled out an application, and handed it in about a month ago. My friend and I had an argument about employment in America. I argued that the job market apparently is bad at the moment, using me not having a job as proof. I still stand by this, as my acceptance for this job was a total mistake, and why is what I will explain in a little bit. My friend kept saying that the job market is doing well, backing himself up with statistics. Now, you can use the internet for all kinds of statistics saying whatever, but I don’t buy it. I don’t trust statistics simply for the reason that they can be manipulated to say whatever you like. An example would include using racial crime statistics as an excuse to say black people are more likely to be criminals, which is obviously bullshit and racial profiling. Anyway, my point is, I take raw evidence, experience and people I know as proof, since it is the only thing that can be confirmed when talking about issues like these.
Anyway, I decided to prove my friend wrong using another method, which was to call the company I applied for a month later and see if they would hire me. As you can tell, this plan backfired and I got the job. I’m not complaining though (even though I will be, as this is technically what this blog is for if you break it down). How I got the job though was really strange. First of all, I called them and asked them if they got my application. The person who answered the phone said they have not heard of an application under my name, so they told me to speak to a manager. The manager looked and said that there was no application. They told me it probably got thrown away, which I know is for sure what happened, from some jack-ass employee. The manager was so nice as to give me an interview, having pity for me and my now-garbage application. I swear that this would have not been the case if the manager ever got to see my application, as every place I’ve applied to (I’ve applied to a lot) have rejected my applications.
I went to my interview a few days after all of this. I was already nervous, even though it was just an interview. I walked an hour just to get there, and an hour just to get back, since I had no ride, because I have no car, and no money. I went in, and to my surprise, my future manager was extremely nice. A lot of questions were asked, most of them really easy. I’m gonna be honest though, some of them were hard, and I had to lie just to answer them at a not awkward timing. It’s a really bad habit. Everyone here knows how much I love My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, but I’m sorry Applejack, I have an issue with lying. I understand that honesty is important and builds trust, but when I’m under a lot of pressure I tend to lie to make things easier for myself. Sometimes I even do it without even knowing it. Sometimes I literally don’t even notice until I stop talking. Anyway, about half of what I said during the entire interview was straight-up lies. From the personal questions to my scheduling availability. Most of it I didn’t even mean to say though. I just got super nervous, and said what I thought would be a good answer, no matter if it applied to me or not. I even lied about my availability. Right now I’m working part time, but I didn’t want to have a lot of hours, even if it still counts as part time, so I said that I visit my dad on Fridays and Saturdays (it’s actually Tuesday and Thursday nights). My reasoning behind this is less hours and not having to work on weekends (except for Sunday). Friday is a better day, anyway. I plan on working on my honesty, but goddamn I needed to lie just to get a fucking job. I can honestly tell you that I feel a little bit insecure about my true competence though. That’s probably a huge reason why I lied. Though I acknowledge that lying is almost always wrong, I was pissed off to the point where I felt I had to just to get a job, and it’s kind of true. If I told the entire truth I honestly probably wouldn’t even have this job. I plan to work on being honest in the future, but I kind of needed to lie at that moment. I will update everyone on how my honesty is coming along in the future. For now though, I will focus on work.
We all know the story by now, I got hired and we all lived happily ever after... until I start ACTUALLY working. A few other factors I still need to bring light to. First of all, I’m a transgender girl struggling to transition. I’m currently closeted to most people (unless I really trust them) and “crossdress” to feel more like a woman. Being transgender will certainly be a huge issue when working. First of all, everyone will see me as a male because of my voice and appearance (I’m trying to look as feminine as possible, but when I’m dressed up the closest I can get to feminine is an androgynous look). It will be hell. All of my co-workers, customers and managers thinking I’m male and not expecting me to even question or say a word about it; just blindly accepting it. I will have to dress as male, suppress my gender dysphoria, not say a word about being trans, not use a woman’s bathroom (or any bathroom, because I’m not male either and they don’t have gender neutral bathrooms where I work), and overall have to deal with this shit every day. I will let everyone know how it goes in these entries though. Another problem I have is work anxiety. One irrational fear I have for some reason is working. I find the idea of doing what someone says and getting paid less for doing so not only unfair and enraging, but physically and emotionally terrifying. Just thinking about work makes me really scared and makes me not want to work at all whatsoever. I know this sounds insane, but I can’t help my brain from thinking this way. Again, I will let everyone know how this goes in the entries I write. Another thing is transportation. I have a car, but don’t have it registered, nor do I have the insurance for it. I, nor my parents can’t afford either. It is obvious I have to pay for it with money I make in this new job, however, I really don’t want to because I despise insurance. I don’t want to have to pay $200 a month just because the fat-cat insurance companies paid lobbyists to force their corporate policies into law. In case you don’t know what that’s all about, do research. But yes, that is the ONLY reason why it’s a law. Because these companies indirectly made them laws. It’s complete bullshit. Not to mention also extremely sexist. Insurance companies say different genders have to may more or less because of, once again, profiling sexist statistics. Not to mention, they also do not acknowledge is someone is transgender or not. They also do not acknowledge non-binary people. Also, this happened: I called an insurance company just to ASK what their prices would be for me, and they kept calling me SIR over and over again! Without even asking me or apologizing afterward. They did it OVER AND OVER again, and it aggravated me. It was only because of my voice, and I couldn’t take it for another second. I eventually freaked out after the 5th time they called me, “sir” and told them that I can’t do this shit anymore. I got extremely pissed at them because of their insensitivity. I haven’t called them again to this day for this reason. This is an example of how corporations AND government still discriminate based off of gender and sex. There is much more than just this, but this is just one example. One I experience first-hand, and couldn’t physically handle. I REALLY don’t want to pay these cunts a single penny, but they’re forcing me. It’s seriously disgusting and evil. I want these people to take a look at themselves and see what they are doing, because they are pure evil. Sometimes I even wonder why I even should work. Just to pay the government, and support a sexist corporate fascist machine just so I can drive and not have any or barely any money left over? Yeah, doesn’t sound very fun to me. This could possibly be the reason I quit if I decide to do so. Working just honestly doesn’t seem worth it to me if this is all it’s going to be. If all this bullshit is what I’m going to have to deal with in the future. I want to drive, but GODDAMN, PLEASE make it easier and less discriminatory for us! For God sake, I need a car to get to work. I walked to an interview, and it took an hour to get there and an hour to get back. I don’t wanna have to do that every fucking time I go to work. I want this shit to be abolished or at least made fair as soon as fucking possible. If anyone has a solution or anyway things could possibly be made more fair, PLEASE let me know, and I will do anything to support this cause. Anyway, all of these reasons and more are far more than enough for me to NOT work. So let me ask you all: WHY should I work?

When it comes to tracking stocks one of the methods is thru charts and styles. A machine of bar charts is commonly used that constitute durations of time (like every day, weekly, etc). The pinnacle of this chart for stock market analysis would list the high charge even as the smaller bar chart to the right lists the outlet and the other one lists the closing prices.

It also uses the color machine, with crimson or black if the inventory’s final value become decrease than the only previous to this one or white and green if it becomes extra.
A unique sample this is often seen in stock market analysis is known as the Cup and Handle. This is when a inventory starts off evolved off with a high price and then dips in value and in the end returns to a higher charge. When that stock degrees out in expenses, it is called the deal with of the stock, and this will be an amazing region to buy so the trader makes appropriate earnings whilst it goes again up, that’s the cup part of the pattern.
Head and Shoulders is but some other stock pattern. It manner that the stock first comes to a peak (a shoulder), then gets lower and then paperwork some other even higher height (the top), after which is going up once more, (some other shoulder).
Moving Average – A very popular stock analysis device, this one exhibits the stock’s median value within a certain time frame. It is plotted on a chart so that buyers can see what the inventory’s sample is.
Relative Strength Index – This market analysis tool appears at a comparison of the quantity of days a stock ends on a advantageous be aware and the amount of days it ends on a negative be aware. It is used over a unique amount of time, typically nine to fifteen days. In order to use it, the buyers divide the median quantity of days the stock is going up via the median quantity of days it is going down. The result is delivered to at least one and employed to divide a hundred. Then you subtract that result from one hundred to get the inventory’s relative energy index. Depending on that quantity, a dealer can inform if a stock is strong or weak.
Money Flow Index – This manner makes use of the quantity of stocks that had been traded plus the cost of the inventory. If this range is high, you have to promote your stock, but if it’s far under 30 you should purchase extra.

Four of the most important requirements when reading a corporation are:
• Product: Is the organization’s product something new, or does it fill an opening in a selected niche? Is it a nice product? If not a brand new product, will it compete efficiently with present products?
• Profitability: Does the agency make a earnings and has it made income over a length of 3 or greater years? What do its debt tiers appear to be?

Do they’ve open communication with their shareholders? The CEO (Chief Executive Officer) plays a key position within the management of a corporation.
