hinata's shrewd perceptiveness has literally never been more clear than in this match, like he's so keenly aware of everything that Kenma is doing, every little move impacts him so much and it's a measure of both how much he cares about this specific match and how much he has grown from the 'club' that operated solely on instincts back in the early chapters

“he who climbs the ladder must begin at the bottom” is so so so important in haikyuu bc during ball boy arc everyone tells hinata to “learn something special” to compensate for his actions but what he learns instead is a good, solid receive - aka the basics of volleyball.
he proves that to grow you don’t need a new flashy serve or powerful spike but it is the basic receive that is the foundation of good volleyball. so yes, to become good at something you must start at the bottom even if it means embarrassing yourself in the process. only then can you truly become good.

Why did I realize just now that the two biggest moments of growth for kagehina happen in their respective seasons
Summer: training camp arc, they have to work separately to hone their own skills before coming back together to create their new, eyes-open quick
Winter: National training camp/Ball boy arc, once more their paths diverge in the name of individual growth

While I think the nostalgia factor of the first three seasons of Haikyuu!! truly elevate them to another level, I can’t stop thinking about how season four is truly unparalleled when it comes to Hinata’s character development. It starts off with the ball boy arc, showing him learning all kinds of new techniques and developing some amazing games sense, and the latter half is devoted to the Inarizaki match where those things he learned pay off in such satisfying ways.
And, crucially, this is also the season where we see how Hinata is invaluable as a team member. He helps Hyakuzawa, he gets Goshiki to practice with the other camp members, he smooths out the conflict between Kageyama and the rest of Karasuno, and there are multiple times at the Spring Tournament where he turns the mood around after a failure (encouraging Tanaka, getting hyped up about his receive, just wanting more tosses from Kageyama). We see that his passion and whole-hearted devotion to volleyball even has an impact on the opposing team! One of my favorite parts of Hinata’s character is how he revels in facing and learning from stronger opponents, and that is so present in season four, and it’s what makes that season so amazing to me!

okay no see the thing that made me really, really sad about hinata and the thing that made me really, really root for him and love him and want to see him win it all was how, like, people kept DENYING him. and i'm not talking about spectators in the stands going "omg he's so short haha, can he really do anything?" i'm talking about how his own team and how everyone who knew them in some way - as much as i love them - could never really separate him from kageyama. they were the freak quick duo, karasuno's number nine and number ten. they were amazing! so brilliant, the two of them. and hinata thought it was a way out, at first. he thought it was a way over the summit. he thought it was the key to being someone better.
but a key goes both ways, you know. it can lock you up just as much as it can set you free.
and hinata had to be so, so frustrated. everyone was finding ways to move forward except him. everyone expected him to stay stuck. and you could argue that that's not entirely true, sure, that he was always training, always trying to catch up, and they encouraged that. but nobody ever expected him to be more. nobody ever expected him to go beyond what he had with kageyama - they all thought that was enough for hinata. they thought he was fine like that because it worked for the rest of them. they underestimated how much he wanted to be capable. they didn't get how much he wanted to stand on his own two feet.
and that wasn't fair to hinata! it wasn't fair that hinata, who loved to play and loved the game and loved volleyball so so much, was the only one being left behind! he wanted to change that but nobody was trying with him!!! so of course he got impatient!! of course he was reckless!!! of course he was carving his own opportunities!!! there was no way forward otherwise!!! because if we take a minute to think about how training would have gone while kageyama was at tokyo, let's be honest — it probably wouldn't have gone well. nobody else can do with hinata what kageyama could do with him. hinata would have been held back. he would have felt useless. practicing serves and receives was stuff he was already doing constantly before that, and it wasn't teaching him anything. yeah hinata was a little bit selfish and a little bit shameless but being so finally got him somewhere!!
all hinata ever wanted to do was fly, even if it meant straying from the flock to do so

the ball boy arc will always have a special place in my heart. it's a testament to shoyo's resilience. in order to become a better player, he takes opportunities, and even if he wasn't meant to be at this training camp, he broke through and made an opening for himself. his desire to learn is what sets him apart from the rest. because of this arc, we got to see a new shoyo during the inarizaki vs karasuno game with his amazing receive that slowed down the game. ball boy shoyo is so important!!!

I just think Toei gives Vegeta a lot of shit for a guy who's maintained his rank within the top ten most powerful beings in the mortal realm since he was like five years old.
#and he did it without dragon balls OR senzu beans OR magic chi unlocks OR otherworldly help he's just been grinding for 30 years#every time I see a fan like 'vegeta's so weak bro lol' i'm like?? Hm?? Where??#I will never forgive toei for writing him the way they do in the movies but even with their ass character choices like#He's still Consistently The Fuck Out Here#When he tells Kiwi that he's actively choosing to be on the front lines instead of kicking back like he could be with his status as a lord#and then the payoff in Super when they're like 'damn vegeta must be a prodigy' Pybara is like 'yeah that's because he works his ass off'#the way I yelled!! And it's true of Goku too!!#I had to explain to a friend the other day too that Bardock's wish re: his boys doesn't remove all the grinding Goku's done over his life#It helped him survive and meet people the same way it did Raditz but Goku's still been training every single day. all his life.#The reason Raditz lost is because he didn't train his tail like Nappa and Vegeta did -- he knew it was a problem with a solution#and never addressed the problem. Goku consistently dug his heels in and worked to overcome any weakness he discovered in his body#no opportunity is going to help you if you don't put the work in. that's why Vegeta's arc is so good. He puts the work in on all fronts.#and why I am constantly mad at Toei for writing his relationships the way they do because it is so deeply inconsistent with his themes#anyway here's another essay in the tags aksldjaskjld

i am actually glad that fionna's finally starting the part of her character arc in the last ep that involves seeing the people and creatures she fights (and usually kills) as actual living beings and not just video game NPCs or something. she was shown to be brash and physical with others since the first ep, and while i'm not gonna sit here and say she should be more dainty or some other crap like that, i am glad she's finally starting to realize how her actions affect other people and that the reality of the multiverse is sinking into her. interesting stuff!
