Gen Alpha kids
When you swipe to the left on Android phones, there are a bunch of articles that are supposed to be related to things you like. I found one today about Gen Alpha kids.
A lot of the attitudes that the writer assigns to Gen Alpha kids are not really particular to this current Generation, they are, in fact, just human nature. There are several quotes from various experts:
"They are persistent seekers of justice, and as a result, will stand up to someone three times their size without hesitation,"
“For example, if an adult enforces a no-electronics rule at dinner but then uses their own cell phone, they are likely to question the inconsistency and challenge the rule,”
“Generation Alpha can oftentimes challenge and refuse to accept the status quo, questioning rules and customs that may seem arbitrary or hypocritical,”
"They are fearless, tenacious, always go after what they want without a second thought, and never back down from a challenge,"
If I look at the behavior alone- they challenge rules and particularly inconsistent application of rules, they go after what they want and don't back down, that stuff is just regular human behavior that we discipline out of kids through time. They are innately selfish by nature and will grab what they want from other kids. They need to be taught to share and disciplined into social behavior.
Some of the motives ascribed to them as to WHY they are like this, namely this: "They are persistent seekers of justice" are probably more attributable to the adults. I mean, we're all about justice when that justice means someone else needs to share with US, not as concerned about justice when it means we need to share with them.
But who doesn't question rules that seem arbitrary or hypocritical? This isn't behavior specific to Gen Alpha, it's just basic human nature. We all do this.
One of the reasons proffered for this alleged unique behavior is the "Millennial parents, who employ different strategies than previous generations."
Uh, I have some news for the writer: I, a boomer, had some of these same dumb ideas when I was a young parent. I too thought that I would not be the kind of father who said things like: because I said so! I would sit with junior and walk him through the rational thought processes, and junior, being fully rational too, would see the beauty of my concern for him, and accept the direction given to him. Or, as the article puts it, "allowing the child to be part of the decision-making process and seeking to better understand them,” says Ryan Fedoroff, MEd, of Newport Healthcare. “This develops independent thinking and problem-solving skills in children, which can make them feel empowered, more confident, and practically fearless."
Sure. Allow your child to be 'part of the decision-making process' which will allow him to 'better understand' the process.... which will 'develop independent thinking and problem solving skills in children', which in turn 'can make them feel empowered, more confident, and practically fearless.' And what, boys and girls, could possibly go wrong if your four-year-old is empowered, confident and practically fearless?
Except, and here's what happened in my case, junior wasn't as rational as I had thought he would be. He was immature and selfish. Selfish because he was a little human and, like all of us, wanted what he wanted, and immature because, well, he hadn't had time to mature. What I had missed in all this was that being rational about where you fit in the scheme of things takes time. It takes failure and the wisdom that comes from learning from those mistakes, and that only comes through time. So rationally walking junior through why he can't have flaming hot cheetohs for every meal was a real waste of time, and at that point I discovered the wisdom of MY father and pulled out the old gem: you can't because I said so.
There was a viral video some years ago when mom was trying to reason with a little kid- maybe 4 or so. And he kept interrupting and saying, "But Judy ( I don't remember the exact name), listen! You're not understanding..." He wanted what he wanted and wouldn’t be dissuaded or reasoned with. Every time she would try to reason with him, he would interrupt and continue to push the same point, which was no more than saying: But I want it!!!! That's not his fault, his reasoning just isn't up to level yet. And it's up to the parents to understand that, not act like he is more mature than he is. Sure, giving junior that much rope to argue his point might feel empowering to him, but to what end? Junior feels empowered to forward purely selfish arguments.
The characterization in the article is that "authority imposed on children" is "harsh". Well, you don't want to impose harsh authority on little boo-boo, do you? What a meany you would be. But the fact of the matter is that as the adult, you are responsible for junior. That makes you, wait for it... the authority. Of course, authority can be either harsh or not. But the law makes the adult responsible, and therefore the authority, whether the adult likes it or not. By all means, you don't want to go out of your way to exasperate your kids, but those kids actions are legally on you. So you ARE the authority. And if that seems harsh that you will have to tell Junior to listen to you whether he likes it or not, and if he doesn't, there's gonna be some paddling in the future, then that's the way it has to be. You ARE the authority, you have the wisdom and the experience, and junior will have to listen to you whether he feels empowered or not. He can get empowered as he gets older.
Motives
I can't help but feel that a lot of the motives attributed to the kids in this article aren't really correct. They sound like the adults quoted in the articles are just projecting on to the kids.  "They are persistent seekers of justice"  "They are defending each other, defending their families, defending strangers, because they feel so connected to others,"  “Events experienced by this age group, particularly related to racial injustice and equality, like Black Lives Matter, have increased awareness and influenced a commitment to addressing racial inequalities,”
I'm not convinced that giving these kids devices does anything towards making them ferally empathetic. My own experience with my grandnieces and nephews is that they are nearly zombies in front of their ipads. I say hello, and if I’m lucky, I may get them to look up and acknowledge me. They are utterly zoned in on their devices and are losing human connection. Watching videos of teachers talking about the ipad kids is telling me the same thing. Hopefully this isn't widespread, but as much as Gen Alpha is growing up on devices, they seem severely socially, emotionally, and intellectually retarded, not extra empathetic.
"They may also have an easier time setting boundaries and expressing themselves than previous generations because of their confidence and being raised knowing all feelings are valid (even if all behaviors aren’t)."
One of the things the teachers on these ipad kid videos are saying is that the kids are unresponsive, and if they are "setting boundaries" it's to tell the authorities in their lives that those authorities "can't tell them what to do, cuz, you aren't my mom!"
I suppose you can spin that kind of disobedience as "setting boundaries and expressing themselves" and having "confidence" and "knowing their feelings are valid"… but in reality, it also makes for completely self-absorbed humans who won't learn or cooperate.
The article does acknowledge this, in much nicer terms than I did. The trick in child-raising is to find what junior is good at, and teach him to use those strengths for the good, while mitigating the bad effects. Because just about any trait we have will have both good and bad usages.

Mindfulness Techniques for All Ages’ Educational Needs
The discipline of mindfulness involves being entirely present in the moment without passing judgment. It is the capacity to be fully in the now, conscious of what we’re doing and seeing, without dwelling on the past or the future. It may also be described as an age-old practice of being watchful, focused, and open to the present.
Students might feel less stressed and frustrated by participating in mindful exercises in class. Students will focus on using breathing and focused imagery to have conversations with their surroundings.
The practice of mindfulness is gaining popularity in today’s classrooms. According to studies, students who practice mindfulness can increase their cognitive processing, sensitivity, impulse stability, and mental concentration.
Explaining Mindfulness to Students
The corpus amygdaloideum, hippocampus, and cerebral cortex of the brain are interconnected and communicate with one another to create a reaction to outside stimuli that are interpreted as risks. The corpus amygdaloideum and hippocampus react with a “quarrel,” “freeze,” or “flight” reaction in reaction to fear or resentment. Such reflexes can be postponed by the prefrontal cortex, giving rational conclusions time to develop. Students who practise mindfulness are better able to control their reactivity and comprehend how the prefrontal brain influences their conduct.
The corpus amygdaloideum of the brain works to protect us but sometimes it confuses stress with danger. When the amygdala is distressed, the hippocampus, which stores memories, shuts down. Decision-making requires the prefrontal cortex to obtain data from the amygdala and the hippocampus, but if it fails to act, decision-making stops. In this scenario, mindfulness promotes mental peace, which enables us to act wisely.
The Advantages of Mindfulness in Education
Teachers and students have frequently seen how practicing mindfulness helps students strengthen their skills in the classroom.
Skills gained via mindfulness include some of the following:
Better Concentration and Learning Capabilities
According to a survey quoted by Mindful School, 83% of children who used the Mindfulness teaching method showed more concentration. In addition, the American Psychological Association found a link between classroom attention and increased conscious processing of students.
Educational Mindfulness Techniques for Teachers
All students can benefit from the practice of mindfulness. Teachers use different strategies depending on the needs and ages of their students.
Educational Strategy for Mindfulness in Elementary School
Respiratory control for self-sedation is a technique that teachers can use in elementary school. This can be done by allowing the child to count up to 3 for both inhalation and exhalation. Students can also imagine the lungs expanding and contracting like the Hoberman sphere, or pretending to inflate an abdominal balloon as an additional respiratory control strategy.
Another option for educators is to encourage mindfulness using group projects and student-led routines.
During circle time, students can exercise their fingers to calm their classmates. Alternatively, the classes can work together to create a tree of thanks that acts as a reminder so that everyone can remember the good things that happened.
Guided imagery can be taught to elementary school students. For example, students can close their eyes and discuss their thoughts while the teacher tells a story in vibrant images.
Teachers can take their elementary school students out of the classroom and pay attention to their movements when they discover sensory clues in the environment, such as the smell of grass or wet paint. Yoga is another type of careful movement that teachers can introduce to their students.
Mindfulness Techniques for Middle School Classrooms
A junior high school teacher can teach students how to calm down with a chime, or find out how to calm down by noticing their physical connection to their body and environment while sitting in a chair.
Another way teachers can encourage junior high school mindfulness is to assign written consideration. Students can respond in writing to daily prompts, academic lessons, or social interactions. There are many mindfulness apps and videos that are specially designed and useful for this age group. Students can practice mindfulness both at home and in the classroom. Students can also have the choice of choosing a custom mindfulness practice that is tailored to their specific needs and interests.
Classroom mindfulness techniques for high school and college
Meditation is a valuable skill for teachers to instill in high school and college students. Students can try body scan meditation and walking meditation in addition to traditional sitting meditation. Intensive mindfulness techniques such as
Exercises such as rolling fingers with each breath are especially beneficial for older students who are nervous before the exam. Students can also practice mindfulness outside of class by sitting quietly, breathing naturally, and observing the current moment without judgment.
Conclusion:
Mindfulness in the classroom enhances concentration and reduces stress on students of all abilities and grade levels. Take time in the classroom to practice mindfulness and help students grow emotionally, socially, and academically.

Parenting of the Fowl siblings
Inspired by @orangerosebush's dissection of Artemis and Butler's strange child/parent relationship, I started reflecting on the relationship between Artemis, Myles, and Beckett to their own parents and... I've been angry every since. This is basically my rant about how they failed their children.
Artemis
It's made pretty clear at the beginning of the series that Artemis doesn't have... the best relationship with his parents. His father is described in rather distant and cold terms (rather befitting, given he was missing in the arctic), and his mother is dealing with severe mental health issues, which means Artemis has to take on a more care based role in their relationship. As the series progresses, however, we start to uncover aspects of their dynamic before the events of the books, back when Artemis had to make appointments to see his father.
The Fowl parents parenting strategy at this time seem to be "All the rules". As the Time Paradox says (chap 1, p14) "His [Artemis's] childhood had been a time of order and discipline". This was a time where his father was shaping Artemis to the be the perfect little heir for their criminal empire, forcing this child into a very ridged mould he was always going to be too small for. And being a child, Artemis thought that was what he wanted to be, because he was given no other direction to follow. Yes, he's good at crime. Yes, he enjoys it. But he wasn't given much of a choice either way. And because his father was mentioned to be absent from the home a lot, even before his disappearance, and all they'd talk about is business matters when he returns, Artemis learns to associate affection and monetary gain.
Artemis is also, in a way, informed that he will never truly be a good person, since crime and criminal acts are the only thing set to define him as a person, and his legacy in the world, and the psychological repercussions of that are evident all the way through the series, from his questioning his own morality and evaluating what that means, to his near constant atonement for things he's done wrong.
Meanwhile Angeline is doing very little to stop this, or at the very least we don't hear any anecdotes where she tries to give Artemis that freedom that he's not receiving from his father. It's sort of evident in the way he addresses her. "Mother". Strict and formal. Something they used as a term of endearment for years, and that Artemis was comfortable with, until it suited Angeline, at which time she more or less goes on a mini campaign to make him feel bad about it.
And so, when his father disappears, Artemis carries out what he's be trained to do. Crime.
Then, when his father comes back The Rules Change. Because Artemis Sr has a change of heart, arbitrarily switching his moral compass, he invalidating everything Artemis has worked so hard for in order to gain his approval, and get him back. He invalidates the years of Artemis training himself to be the perfect son, of hurting himself and others to achieve his goals, of doing exactly what he was told to do by his father!
And instead of communicating about it honestly, reassuring Artemis that this is truly how things are going to be from then on, they simply tell him what to do again without taking his feelings, and his active trauma, into account. When Artemis Sr first wakes up and announces this revelation of wholesomeness, Artemis just thinks its down to his "good mood" at being alive, or the fairy magic in his system, and that he'll "soon return to his usual gruffness" Eternity Code (chap 3, p86)
Indeed the way Artemis describes his father throughout that entire section in the Eternity Code is much like how one would describe a changeling, left by the fairies in someone else's place.
"I could not believe what I was hearing. One of my most persistent memories was of Father repeatedly quoting the family motto, 'aurum potestas est' - 'Gold is power'. And now, here he was, turning his back on the Fowl principles. What had the magic done to him?" - Eternity Code (Chap 3, p87)
And, worst of all, Artemis has no idea if they'll be any consistency in it, because Fowl Sr has never been around Artemis long enough to show him consistency in the past, so he's afraid. And what do scared children do? They act out, or return to previous patterns of behaviour that made more sense to them. Aka Crime.
All the while Angeline repeatedly uses emotional manipulation and black mail with Artemis, in order for him to do what she wants. There are occurrences of it The Eternity Code, The Opal Deception, and The Atlantis Complex.
"Angeline Fowl played her trump card. 'Well, you know, Arty dear, sometimes people are not who they think they are.'
This was a none-too-subtle dig at Artemis for mesmerizing his parents" The Atlantis Complex - (Chap8, p217)
Angeline is actively making Artemis feel bad about traumatic events and his reaction to them, as a child wanting his parents to not be in pain!
Both parents prove more than once that their love is conditional upon obedience no matter how much they say otherwise, or at the very least this is how they make their children feel. We often forget that, through the entire series of books, Artemis is a child. A brilliant child, yes, but a child non the less. With that context, everything else seems all the more heart breaking.
The Twins
Myles and Beckett, on the other hand, were raised pretty much the opposite to Artemis in what I'm deeming "Free Range Child Care". They were allowed to do and be pretty much anything they wanted, something Artemis reflects on in the books:
"The twins charged in here [their parents bedroom] at all hours of the day and night, flinging themselves on the four-poster bed to wrestle with their protesting mother and father. But Artemis had never experienced that" - Time Paradox (Chap 1, p14)
This has its benefits. Children raised in more hands off environments tend to be more independent, and the twins seem to have a better relationship with their parents on an emotional level than Artemis.
However, problems start to show in this parenting style when the events of the Fowl Twins comes about.
Firstly, there is no doubt in my mind that Beckett is somewhere on the neurodivergent spectrum, as he had all the hallmarks of someone with ADHD. But, away from that, it's clear Beckett needs help with certain behavioural elements. He has no sense of danger, he has issues retaining invisible information (aka information that is theoretical, or does not have examples immediately in front of him), he struggles with reading comprehension, memory issues, and a short attention span. This kid would get absolutely destroyed in a typical school environment. And what do his parents do? Learn Mindfulness, not for Beckett, but to "cope with Beckett's behaviour".
What?
They don't try to help Beckett in seemingly any way. They just shrug their shoulders and be all "well that's Beckett for you". Who does that help? No one. It's not addressing the problem, nor is it helping Beckett learn to do better by himself and others in the long run. It's like covering an open wound with duck tape. It's still bleeding, it's not the right tool for the job, and it's gonna be more painful once you eventually have to remove it.
And Beckett obviously feels the affects of this:
"Beckett shook off the Pixel's small hands. 'They'll say what everyone always says when I know something and they don't: You're wrong Beckett. Leave the thinking to Myles, Beckett. You're the dumb brother, Beckett. Animals can't talk, Beckett Fowl, and, even if they could, they wouldn't talk to you because you're the stupid twin." - Fowl Twins: Deny All Charges. (Chap 6, p113)
And what's the one thing that neurodivergent kids respond to as a rule? Stability. Something the Fowl parents seem incapable of providing.
After years of being hands off with them, there's no basis for communication, or healthy patterns of time spent together in this family. Simply put, these kids don't have a dialogue with their parents. Both Angeline and Artemis Sr are off somewhere else most of the time, meaning the kids learn to be self reliant. As a result, when they start getting into dangerous situations, they don't tell their parents. Why would they? There's never been any consequences for their actions before. And if the parents just start imposing rules on them out of no where, they're simply not going to follow them, because they don't have any concept of what a repercussion will be after.
And this all comes to ahead in the second book, were the infamous "Wrist Bump Promise" happens, where Artemis Sr forces the twins to use a wrist pump promise to say that they won't try interacting with the fairies again. Let me repeat, Fowl Sr uses a coping mechanism that the Twins developed as a means of trust between the two of them, which was a central point of how they cope with a lot of the traumatic experiences they went through in the series, and used it as a tool of obedience. It's an abuse of authority, and trust. No matter what Fowl Sr's motives are, driven by love or not, that's not okay.
All the while Angeline is in another room, smiling and polite, taking away the main means of protection her sons have against the very real threats they are still facing, aka Lazuli, whom she is specifically using her motherly kindness as an insipid weapon. She is removing not just their protector, but their friend, same with Whistle-blower.
And at the end of it all, they were wrong, not just on a parenting front, but on a logical front. Their children were still in danger, even as Artemis Sr and Angeline were forcing them to comply with things which they thought would make them safe. The kids had to solve their own problems, behind their parents back, blatantly skirting around their rules, and putting themselves in more danger than if their parents had been supportive and asked them "what do you need? How can we help? How do we solve this problem together".
All this means is that Myles and Beckett don't learn to come to their parents when things go wrong. They just learn to hide things better. Instead of opening up a judgment free dialogue, with unconditional love and support, they make it clear that if the Twins come to their parents when they mess up, they will get punished for it
Artemis Parenting his brothers
We don't get much of Artemis in the Fowl Twins (sad Gaby is sad about that). But what we get proves that Artemis is doing a better job than his parents at raising his brothers, even from space.
From his small video message in the first Fowl Twins book, Artemis does all the things that his parents should have been doing the entirety of the series.
1) He sets up a support structure for them, gives them all the information they may need free from judgement.
2) He trusts them to be intelligent and wily enough to solve their own problems, but makes it clear that their first priority should be their safety.
3) He gives them resources they can tap into if they get too over their heads, saying to call him if they need help or if they want to talk about it afterwards because in his words "I do worry".
If anything, Artemis is excited for them, because he trusts in their independence and the possible benefits that could come with this adventure for them as people (I mean, he knew they were gonna get up to some BS while he was gone, they're Fowl's. It's like a genetic predisposition. Something their parents really should have come to terms with for their kids sake)
In conclusion, the Fowl parents are just... No. And I, for one, can't wait for the day Artemis comes back to earth and takes custody of his siblings until his parents start showing signs of real change.

&&. announcing his grace, ( ‘maksim’ kwon sangcheol ), the ( 40 ) year old ( duke ) of ( gyeongsang ). he is often confused with ( steven yeun ). some say that he is ( aloof & reticent ), but he is actually ( disciplined & brave ).
Tumblr media
“But it is no use to justify yourself. It is no good to explain. It is weak to be anecdotal. It is wise to conceal the past even if there is nothing to conceal. A man’s power is in the half-light, in the half-seen movements of his hand and the unguessed-at expression of his face. It is the absence of facts that frightens people: the gap you open, into which they pour their fears, fantasies, desires.” — Hilary Mantel
“Let the truth be told: There is no virtue anywhere. Life is sly and unscrupulous, a blackguard, wolfish, severe. In service to itself, it will commit any offense. So, too, is Death possessed of infinite strategies and a gaunt nature- but also mercy, also grace and tenderness. In his own country, Death can be kind.” — Catherynne M. Valente
Idk those are just two quotes that sum up his whole vibe more concisely and in more beautiful prose than I could. And here’s his pinterest.
Sangcheol comes from a long line of esteemed military men. Most of South Korea’s Ministers of Defense since the restoration of the monarchy have been members of the Kwon family, usually the head.
He was born to Kwon Kyungtae, eldest son of the then-Duke of Gyeongsang and Lyudmila Tsoy, a Russian former gymnast of Korean descent from Primorsky. She was a member of the Eastern Orthodox church, and he was baptized Maksim, which is the name he goes by internationally. Friends call him Max.
Kyungtae had been well down the path to continuing the family’s legacy until his death in a training accident. Subsequently, Sangcheol’s grandfather and uncle took over his upbringing. It was a strict, often stifling childhood. He had always disliked the protocol and press attention that came with his position, but persevered because of his strong sense of duty. Still, the happiest times of his early life were visiting his mother’s family in Ussuriysk.
He did his first two years of undergrad at Saint Petersburg State University, before returning home to enroll at the Korean Army Academy Yeongcheon. All eyes were on him at KAAY.
Not long after he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, he was engaged to Anya Romanova. It was the type of match that couldn’t be refused. But neither of them really wanted or were ready for marriage, and it imploded quickly. At the time, it embarrassed him to be seen to fail publicly, but in hindsight he’s grateful for the experience. He and Anya have since built the type of friendship that can only exist between two people who know the worst sides of each other.
More importantly, after the divorce, he no longer felt beholden to the expectations that had bound him from birth. Against the wishes of most of his family, who feared a repeat of what had happened to their last heir, he volunteered for selection into the Korean special forces. He passed the grueling selection process with flying colors, followed by ( based on my research, horrifying ) training in all kinds of crazy shit, including a stint with DEVGRU in the US.
I’m keeping the details of his time in the special forces vague because it’s all classified anyway and there might be some room for ✨spicy plots. But suffice it to say: he’s seen, experienced, and done bad things. He came out of the experiences a different man, for worse and for better. He’s not a malicious person, but he’s a dangerous one.
That he would remarry seemed to be a forgone conclusion to everyone except Sangcheol, who was perfectly content being single and saw no real problem with his dukedom eventually passing to his sister’s children. The thought of another political marriage repulsed him, and the seemingly endless line of callow prospective brides marched before him did nothing to change his mind.
But Lady of Areum of Jeolla did. They had run in similar circles for most of their lives ( there are only five dukedoms in South Korea, after all ) but hadn’t seen each other for years. He was preoccupied with his dukedom and military career, and she had spent most of her adulthood out of the country. When they met again, they couldn’t stay away from each other. ( And they did try. )
On paper, it was an almost laughably suitable match, but some eyebrows were still raised. For one, both of them are unconventional in their own ways, especially Areum. More importantly, she’s the daughter of Princess Hyeryeong ( half-sister of the reigning Emperor, oldest living child of the previous Emperor and Empress ), and there are those who believe that it’s Areum’s brother who should sit on the throne.
all this to say someone please apply for Areum. adopt coming soon.
His wife was the one who finally come to the program. The idea of living in a hotel filled with this particular group of people for the express purpose of meeting and talking to them is his own personal hell, but he’s the Minister of Defense and despite the sizable Korean contingent already here he probably doesn’t trust any of their abilities. ( That isn’t necessarily a knock on any of them. He hardly trusts anyone. )
He’s every bit a military man in his bearing: clean-cut, disciplined, efficient. He isn’t an approachable man, which is handy since it dissuades others from approaching him unnecessarily. He’s notoriously inscrutable and sparing with his words. He doesn’t ( usually ) try to be intimidating, but it sort of happens anyway.

30 Days of Devotion - Mars
1. A basic introduction of the deity
Mars is one of the Dii Consentes, the twelve major Gods honored in the Roman religion (or as Cicero calls it in “De Natura Deorum”, Cultus Deorum). He’s the God of soldiers, victory, battle and martial frenzy, and He’s the father of Romulus and Remus - hence He’s the divine father of Rome.
2. How did you become first aware of this deity?
Let’s just say that being interested in Roman and military history helped a lot with the introduction.
3. Symbols and icons of this deity
Mars is often depicted naked -as His Greek counterpart, Ares-, with a spear and a shield. Romans used to keep a spear in the Regia (the former residence of the kings of Rome), and it was said that this weapon moved or vibrated if Rome was in danger. He is also depicted with a lorica musculata, an anatomical armor used during the Republic and the Imperial period. Sacred animals are the horse, the wolf, the woodpecker.
4. A favorite myth or myths of this deity
Ovid tells the story of how Mars is tricked by Anna Perenna. The God is madly in love with Minerva (quote “Armifer armiferae correptus amore Minerue - Uror et hoc longo tempore uolnus alo” (Fasti, book 3, 681-2), that approximately means “I, a warrior, burn with love for the belligerent Minerva, and for a long time I’ve nurtured this wound”) and asks Anna to help Him. She agrees, but instead of speaking to Minerva, She lies and tells Him the Goddess accepted. Mars prepares Himself for the rendezvous, only to find out that Anna, disguised as Minerva, tricked Him and almost had an affair with Him.
5. Members of the family – genealogical connections
Rhea Silvia - The vestal virgin that gave birth to the sons of Mars; niece of Amulius, usurper of king Numitor’s throne
Romulus and Remus - His children, founders of the first settlement of Rome. Romulus killed his brother during a fight (there are many versions of this story: the most famous tells that Remus mocked the sanctity of the pomerium, jumping over the border while armed, and the fixed punishment for this transgression was death), becoming the first king of Rome. He became a God, Quirinus, after death (the senators killed him, but the myth says he ascended the heavens while speaking to his soldiers during the training).
6. Other related deities and entities associated with this deity
Janus - in times of war the doors of His temple were left open and were closed during peace (Emperor Augustus says that under his govern the temple was closed twice - an extraordinary event).
Nerio - the personification of valor, sometimes identified as Bellona; She’s said to be His consort
Iuppiter and Quirinus: with Mars, they were part of the archaic triad of Gods that ruled over Rome. Quirinus is the name of the divinized Romulus, a Deity (Dumézil in “Archaic Roman Religion“ offers a good explanation) and an epithet of Mars.
Venus: as in the Ares/Aphrodites couple, Mars is often depicted as one of Venus’ lovers thanks to the syncretism with the Hellenic mythology
Minerva: in Ovid’s “Fasti”, Mars is said to be in love with Her
Anna Perenna: certain versions of the myth tell that Anna was married to Mars
7. Names and epithets
Mars Gradivus (from gradus, “step”; the marching God))
Mars Quirinus (from quirites, “civilians”; God of the citizens)
Mars Grabovius (a title shared with Iuppiter and an Umbrian Deity, Vofionus)
Mars Pater (from pater, “father”;  Father Mars)
Mars Silvanus (found in Cato’s “De Agricoltura”, probably it's not an epithet but the name of another God, Silvanus)
Mars Ultor (from ultor, “avenger”; the avenging God)
Mars Augustus (from augustus, “venerable”; the venerable God)
8. Variations on this deity (aspects, regional forms, etc.)
I don’t want to turn this post into a wall of names, so I’ll leave here the link to the Wiki article about Mars, where you can find an exhaustive list of syncretic  Celtic Gods.
9. Common mistakes about this deity
In Cato’s “De Agricoltura”, we find a rite that involves Mars as a protector against the dangers of the woods and illness, and a prayer that asks His action in the growing of the crops, the wellness of the shepherds and the animals. This leads many into thinking that Mars is a rustic God, but it’s a shallow interpretation. Mars does not protect the fields per se, He stands against the chaotic forces of nature - He’s a sentinel on the border, and His duty is to block any intruder that tries to sneak in. He guards the perimeter and the entire land, and His role doesn’t change: He never becomes an agricultural God, He just shifts His attention from the wall of the city to the grass of the fields.
10. Offerings – historical and UPG
A common offering for Mars is the suovetaurilia (the sacrifice of an ox, a ram and a pig), and according to Plutarch, during the ides of October, one of the horses that pulled the winner’s chariot in a race is sacrificed to Him (the October Equus). Other common offerings are incense and wine.
11. Festivals, days, and times sacred to this deity
Equirria (February 27, March 14): in this day, the Romans organized chariot races
Quinquatrus (March 19): a sacred ceremony in which the weapons were polished and purified
Tubilustrium (March 23, May 23): a sacred ceremony in which the trumpets were polished and the army was purified
Tigillum sororium (October 1): a ceremony linked to the legend of Horatius and the purification after the war
October Equus (October 15): in this day, the Romans organized chariot races - one of the winning horses (the one who pulled the chariot on the right) was sacrificed to Mars
Armilustrium (October 19): a sacred ceremony in which the weapons were polished and purified
Mars was linked to the ceremony of the uer/ver sacrum (”the sacred spring”), a time when the new generation of warriors was sent out of the settlement in search of better lands and resources. Many groups used to follow sings, like animals, to find a new place and settle down - these groups usually took the name of the sign that helped them (e.g. the Picentes named themselves after the picus, “woodpeker”)
March and October are probably linked to Mars because they signed the beginning and the end of the martial season (wars were fought in spring and summer) - I haven’t found this info in any book/paper yet, it’s one of my assumptions.
12. Places associated with this deity and their worship
the campus martius (the place where the comitia centuriata, the citizens in arms, used to gather)
the Temple of Mars Ultor (erected 2 BC, founded by Emperor Augustus as a vow to avenge the death of Caesar)
the ara Martis in campo, located in the campus martius (in 138, Decimus Junius Callaicus founded a temple in that area as a vow)
the templum Martis extra portam Capenam, located near Porta Capena (where the legions gathered to intervene in the southern regions)
the sacrarium Martis in the Regia (a depository for holy objects related to war)
any temple dedicated to Mars was usually built outside the pomerium, the sacred border that circumscribed the first settlement of Rome, and because of its sanctity, it couldn't be violated with war. Other Deities, such as Bellona, Vulcano, and Venus, were kept out of the pomerium.
13. What modern cultural issues are closest to this deity’s heart?
Honestly, I don’t believe there’s something that still holds the values embodied by Mars, so I would say that our culture has nothing that this God would really care about. War is a useless, mindless bloodshed that kils innoncents; citizens are divided; leaders don’t care about the population. Probably I’m too cinic.
14. Has worship of this deity changed in modern times?
Apart from the obvious impossibility of animal sacrifices and public rites (the heart of the religion), what we can reconstruct from the literary sources is as similar as possible as what Romans used to do. We are lucky enough to have a lot of writings that can be used to refine our practice.
15. Any mundane practices that are associated with this deity?
Martial training and learning discipline (both physical and mental): Personally, I would add studying military history and military strategy.
16. How do you think this deity represents the values of their pantheon and cultural origins?
Romans were not priests who fought in times of need. Romans were soldiers who stipulated deadly serious vows with Gods and men.
There’s a theory that says that the Roman Empire spread its influence because Romans started fighting the neighboring populations as a way to defend themselves. In 390 BCE, Rome was plundered by a Celtic tribe and the shock was so severe that the entire Roman mindset changed immediately. War was no longer seen as an act of violent imposition on others but as an extreme act of defense. War was regulated by laws and rites, a specific group of priests (the fetiales) was involved in the declaration of the bellum iustum, the rightful war, and victory was seen as a sign of divine favor. Omens were taken before the fight, and it was possible to “bribe” the Gods of the opponents with prayers and vows, taking their statues from the temples and bringing them to Rome. War was a matter of religion, and religion permeated every aspect of Roman life.
Mars is defense, discipline, martial order. He’s the centurion, the man who marches with the wounded soldiers; He’s the vexillifer, holding the Roman banner in the middle of the fight. Mars is the sentinel, the last bastion, defending the Urbs, Rome, against its enemies - both outside than inside. He’s the embodiment of the essence of what Rome aspired to become, and what became after centuries of war and diplomacy.
Mars doesn’t just represent Rome and Roman values. Mars is Rome.
17. How does this deity relate to other gods and other pantheons?
*blank
18. How does this deity stand in terms of gender and sexuality? (historical and/or UPG)
With the exception of poetry, in the Roman religion and practice, there was little to no space regarding the sexuality of the Gods (apart from the Male/Female dichotomy). Mars can be considered straight, though.
19. What quality or qualities of this god do you most admire? What quality or qualities of them do you find the most troubling?
I don’t have a “best/worse quality” list because I don’t think that Gods should be analyzed like we do with people. Our Gods are the essence of the Cosmos, and saying that we prefere or oppose something They represent implies that we are disconnected from Them and that essential aspect of reality.
20. Art that reminds you of this deity
Tumblr media
Jacques-Louis David - Oath of the Horatii
21. Music that makes you think of this deity
Dvořák  - Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95, B. 178 "From the New World": IV. Allegro con fuoco
22. A quote, a poem, or piece of writing that you think this deity resonates strongly with
Si sta come
d’autunno
sugli alberi
le foglie
(G. Ungaretti, Soldati - english translation here)
23. Your own composition – a piece of writing about or for this deity
Warcries crush the skies.
Your spear’s shaking, Mars Pater.
Tonight we’ll bleed again.
(I posted this is June, but who cares)
24. A time when this deity has helped you
*blank
25. A time when this deity has refused to help
*blank
26. How has your relationship with this deity changed over time?
*blank
27. Worst misconception about this deity that you have encountered
The blatantly idiotic idea that Mars is a bloodthirsty, mindless imbecile. People seem to have ginormous issues with war Gods and I’m so tired of this trend - it’s desrespectful for the Gods and the devotees. If Deities are not light and fluff and don’t stick to the “tumblr aesthetic”, it doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to mock Them.
28. Something you wish you knew about this deity but don’t currently
29. Any interesting or unusual UPG to share?
Nothing I feel comfortable sharing on the internet.
30. Any suggestions for others just starting to learn about this deity?
Disinstal tumblr

Upon his arrival to Drangleic, Velstadt did not embrace the kingdom’s customs and continued practising his own faith, but would progressively lose interest in the Gods as religious figures, focusing on a more personal approach that revered the Flame’s power above all else. On the other hand, he joined the Warriors of Sunlight during his early youth and remained faithful to the covenant until his last day.
Relationships.
Birth Order: The eldest of five siblings; two girls and three boys, including himself. Velstadt was rather close to his siblings and helped raising them, since both of his parents worked to sustain the family.

Personal.
Usual Mood/Expression: Strong-willed, disciplined and loyal to a fault. Driven by strong beliefs and adamant to betray any of them, to the point of being narrow-minded about his ideals and moral code. Velstadt is a rather kind individual, quite generous and empathetic, even if such qualities aren’t that evident at first.
MBTI: ENFJ.
Enneagram: The Loyalist.
Four Temperaments: Sanguine.

Sins:  lust / greed / gluttony / sloth / pride / envy / wrath,
Virtues:  chastity / charity / diligence / humility / kindness / patience / justice.
Secrets: At some point Velstadt lost faith in the Gods as divine figures and objects of worship, even if he still believes in the power behind them: the Light itself. He tends to keep any sadness, anguish, fear and exhaustion to himself, continuing as if nothing happened despite physical or emotional pain. He misses Shulva and his family, dearly so, in such a manner that he used to have frequent thoughts about forsaking his duty in Drangleic and returning to them. He’s attracted to men.
Quirks: Velstadt is a man of simple tastes, that is, rather indifferent to luxury and wealth, despite his high status.
Savvies: Advanced strategy and war tactics. Religion, history, politics, diplomacy. All chivalrous conduct; bravery, courtesy, honour, gallantry, etc. He can sew and even do complex embroidery, having learned from his mother. Profile:
Basics.
Name: No birth name. Ornstein was a name bestowed upon him by the Prince of Sunlight, after becoming his disciple.
Nickname Titles and Epithets: The Dragon Slayer. Champion of Sunlight, Strength of the Gods and Wielder of Divine Glory. Golden Lion, Lion Knight, Lord of Knights, Holy Knight, Knight of Knights, Holy Spear, Sun Spear, Blessed One, War’s Chosen One.
RP Status: Variable to slow activity.
Fandom: Dark Souls.
Age: He has the appearance of a man in his late 20s, yet he’s thousands of years old.
Species: He’d be considered a ‘demigod’ of sorts. Perhaps the equivalent of an Angel; warrior and servant of the Gods. In reality he’s an individual from a regular humanoid race empowered by the First Flame’s stolen power.
Nationality: Born in some small village/settlement during the Age of the Ancients. However, his mother left with him soon after and thus he never really spent much time there. As an adult he would, of course, identify as a proud citizen of Anor Londo. Later, after abandoning his post, he would claim no affiliation or interest in any nation.
Gender: demigender-masculine. He/him pronouns.
Romantic Orientation: Demiromantic; he doesn’t experience romantic attraction, at all, unless there’s a deep emotional connection beforehand.
Sexual Orientation: Demisexual; he seldom experiences sexual attraction unless there’s romantic attraction beforehand. Pansexual, with a strong preference for men and non-binary folk, then very little interest in cisgender women (mostly aesthetic and sensual).
Religion: He would say his faith and trust are with Gwyn, the Lord of Sunlight — although, there was a time when his devotion belonged solely to Gwyn’s Firstborn; Prince of Sunlight and God of War.
Relationships.
Birth Order: Only child, as far as he knows.
Parents: Father unknown — and unimportant to him. His mother was a nomadic scavenger, who abandoned her young son as soon as she thought he could survive on his own.
Spouse(s)/Significant Other(s): Single. As a knight of Gwyn he swore an oath to remain unwed and father no children.
Children: None.
Closest People/Friends/Allies: Gwyn’s Firstborn and his select Dragonslayers (formerly). The other three Knights of Gwyn, Gough in particular as a fellow dragonslayer. The Silver Knights. The Gods and Anor Londo’s inhabitants in general. Those who prove to be faithful.
Physical Traits.
Eyes: large and almond shaped, very light amber/hazel with notable flecks of dimly luminous gold.
Skin: Light to medium, warm undertone, scarred in several places.
Hair: Rich red, slightly wavy, waist-length; worn loose during times of peace, then neatly braided and tucked under his helmet when fighting in the battlefield. (The red plume is reminiscent of his hair, yes… but it’s just a plume.)
Height: 2.7 m / 9 ft.
Body Build:  Tall and wiry muscular, thanks to a life of unfaltering ardours training. Long and strong limbs, broad shoulders, narrow waist, thick muscular thighs and arms, overall hourglass shaped. However, his body always tends to be lean rather than burly, as a consequence of the severe undernourishment he suffered during his childhood.
Notable Physical Traits: Height, hair, eyes.
Facial features: Harmonious and inherently soft-looking, despite his usual harsh demeanour. Full lips, large eyes, button nose, high cheekbones and smooth complexion.
Scars/birthmarks: Several faded scars across his whole body as a result of wounds received in battle. His chest, legs and right arm show the vestiges of an old, yet particularly gruesome dragon-fire burn, which almost took his life at the time and couldn’t be fully removed by magic healing. Sparse dusting of light freckles across his nose and cheek bones, shoulders, chest and all the way down his back. Lower back dimples.
Personal.
Usual Mood/Expression: Stoic and disciplined, albeit also cold and disdainful at times. Perfectionist and determinate to a fault. Loyal, protective and driven by strong beliefs. Arrogant and self-assured when it comes to his skill and role as a Knight, even if he never boasts about it, regarding flaunting and vain attitudes as utterly undignified. Strict with others, but especially with himself, often to an unhealthy extent. Narrow-minded and stubborn about his ideals and belief.
MBTI: INTJ.
Enneagram: The Achiever.
Four Temperaments: Phlegmatic.
Top TV Tropes:  Blood Knight, Cultured Badass, The Dragonslayer, Semi-divine, Shock and awe, Jerk with a heart of gold.
Prominent Traits:  Stoic, strict, loyal, arrogant, ruthless, intelligent.
Sins:  lust / greed / gluttony / sloth / pride / envy / wrath,
Virtues:  chastity / charity / diligence / humility / kindness / patience / justice.
Secrets: He suffers from mild PTSD which intensifies over time (becoming severe due to lack of treatment) originated during the war against dragons after a particularly gruesome near-death experience. He won’t talk much about his childhood and origins, such that some even assume he’s a highborn — which is absolutely not the case. He tends to keep any sadness, anguish, fear and exhaustion to himself, continuing as if nothing happened despite physical or emotional pain. He has a beautiful singing voice that only a few have ever heard.
Quirks: Getting up at the crack of dawn, every single day, to train and meditate during the morning. Thoughtfully cleaning his armour and weapons, even if they’re not dirty at all, just because he finds it somehow relaxing. Noxious tendency to overwork himself.
Savvies: Advanced strategy and war tactics. All there’s to know about dragons. History, politics, linguistics, economics, mathematics, fine arts, religion — a true warrior must strengthen his body and mind equally, he would always say.
Prominent skills: Martial arts, being one of his kin’s greatest warriors and the only true disciple of the God of War. Particularly skilled with his spear; the weapon of choice to kill dragons due to its piercing attack. He always carries a dagger as a secondary weapon and has a secret sentimental attachment to that kind of blade, which his mother taught him how to use. He can also wield most weapons with superior proficiency, as well as fighting in unarmed combat. Dragonslaying, which was regarded as the pinnacle of knighthood by the gods. Masterful use of lighting. Enough healing skill to keep himself alive in battle by using miracles.
Misc.
Hobbies: Ornstein enjoys sculpting, immensely, so much so that he has a large, private — secret — studio where he spends a good amount of his free time. Aside from his working table and sculptures, there’s also an area dedicated to other pursues, including a massive desk and a few bookshelves, storing a vast assortment of books, as well as transcriptions and translations made by himself. Then, there’s also his original poetry and calligraphy works, that will often combine in a mixture of literary and visual art. Mathematics is another passion of his, often applied to the design of sculptures and other projects, albeit also as purely theoretical developments. Outside the studio, Ornstein ordered the construction of a garden (still inside the castle) where he spends another portion of his free time. He’ll usually tend to it himself, with only sporadic help from servants. Other hobbies include swimming, especially during the night, and singing, although he won’t do any of it in public.
Element: Lighting.
Colours: Gold and scarlet.
Day or Night: Day.
Smell: Burning amber incense; warm with a slight hint of sweetness, mixed with the ever-lingering scent of dragon blood.
Season: Stormy Summer.
Astrological Sign: N/A (But he’d be a Leo.)
Food: Wild boar with hot-spicy seasoning. .
Drink: Fine wine, fresh water.
Song: Playlist.
Bottom or top: dominant top, leaning switch.
Dominant or submissive: Dominant.
Rough or slow sex: rough.

I LOVE BABY IGNOCT ITS SO PUREEEE now I have need for baby gladnis.... for science.
Hi Anon, thanks for the ask! As a reminder, per my FAQ I don’t write for specific pairings and keep romantic-focused asks gender neutral to allow readers to imagine any sort of relationship they want.
That said, I can definitely write something about Gladio and Ignis as children for you!
Gladio andIgnis saw a lot more of each other after Gladio began to train Noctis, but theybegan interacting in the Citadel at age 10 or so.
Theirfriendship didn’t begin with the prince, however.
Gladio wasmuttering to himself in the library about how a battle in Eos’ equivalentof The Lord of the Rings seemed impossible to havehappened.
All Ignis heardwas “battle” and he thought it would be a good tactical exercise
It was! Gladiorecalled a lot of details from the books, so Ignis was able to account fornon-human characters’ abilities and actually plot out the battle with thestrategy presented in the book. Turns out with a few tweaks, it actually wasplausible.
Ignis has beenthe designated fact-checker for Gladio’s fiction novels ever since
Gladio’s offerto taste-test food is a long-standing one, he often tried Ignis’ new recipesbefore they were served to Noctis.
Mostly to seeif he could detect hidden vegetables.
Iris meetsIgnis when she is 8 years old, and routinely goes to him for “softer” advicesuch as “I think I hurt my friend’s feelings, what do I do?”
Gladio isthankful for backup.
Gladio noticesIgnis’ discipline and begins giving him workout routines when Ignis is 13.
Despite being ayear younger, Ignis gets the first growth spurt and is 2 inches taller thanGladio for about 6 months. When Gladio hits his own growth spurt, he isravenous all the time…which leads him to pick up snacks from conveniencestores. Enter the Cup Noodles.
Gladio isdevastated Ignis won’t read his favorite historical fiction series with him.
Ignisis devastated Gladio summarizes each chapter in excruciating detail, regardless.
They boys areinvited to train with some Crownsguard at age 12. One of them isn’t trainingwith a blunted blade, and slices Ignis’ forearm to the bone. It’s the firsttime Gladio sees healing magic in action.
It’s also whyGladio began to learn survival skills—what if that happened away from Insomniaand potions?
They got stuck outside council meetings a lot and would play card games, when they weren’t complaining about Noctis.
“He threw his practice sword at my crotch.”
“He’s been in a foul mood since before training, he refused to eat his breakfast this morning because--and I quote--”bacon is stupid”.”
“But he loves bacon.”
“Yes, he’ll be very sad when the cook serves him none tomorrow.”

Mel Feller MPA, MHR, Discusses Working from Home and Challenging Fears
Tumblr media
Mel Feller MPA, MHR, Discusses Working from Home and Challenging Fears
Mel is the President/Founder of Mel Feller Seminars with Coaching for Success 360, Inc. and Mel Feller Coaching. Mel Feller is an Innovator and Business Leader. Mel Feller currently maintains an office in Texas. Mel is currently an MBA Candidate.
Have you been considering home-based business opportunities?
If so, you are certainly not alone, as there are an increasing number of people who are considering the idea of working from home very seriously. The trouble is that many people have silly assumptions regarding this method of working.
Many of the important issues, which need to be considered very carefully before making such a life change, are often not given much thought until the jump has been made.
In this discussion, let us have a look at some of the common fears or assumptions and those matters overlooked, or not considered seriously enough.
Fear 1: That you will need to take a massive pay cut and take weeks, months or even years to earn a decent income.
Tumblr media
Although this can easily be the case, it need not be. Those who claim that this happened to them, and perhaps quote it as the reason they gave up working at home, are probably those who underestimated the hard work entailed in leaving traditional jobs and staying at home instead.
You would not walk into a standard office job without having trained for it, prepared for it, and made sure that you are ready.
The same is true when considering work from home opportunities. It will be important to plan and prepare well in advance.
Some people spend weeks or months working in their own time after work to get things started, and then switch to working part time to allow them to push the homework more, before finally committing to it full time. It is unlikely that you will be able to walk out of a well-paid job on Friday evening and start heading up a successful and profitable home business opportunity on Monday morning.
Tumblr media
Fear 2: That you will no longer have any support if things go wrong.
Of course, there is a degree of truth here, but in all honesty, it need not be the case. If you are considering a work at home business, the chances are you have already started to investigate the possibilities.
One thing you may well have noticed is how many forums and discussion boards there are which those who have already started working from home, or have been doing so for years maintain.
Make sure you join these, and talk to people. Often they'll be great support, but they'll also help put you in touch with relevant organizations and institutions which could offer a great deal of support and advice, whether it's tax related, sorting out your accounting, or looking at marketing strategies.
Overlooked point 1: Too many people assume that if they give up the day job and start working from home, they will be able to relax a great deal more, with less pressure and more flexibility with hours.
Of course, this can be the case, but only if you plan for it very carefully. A huge mistake made by some people is to start their home business on a Monday morning by sleeping in a few extra hours, taking leisurely time to watch daytime television, and squeeze a bit of work in here and there.
It is only when they start to realize how little work has been completed and how little money they have earned, that the pressure builds. Work from home business arrangements or opportunities require an inordinate amount of self-discipline.
It requires that you plan carefully and rigidly, being aware of the work you need to do and planning your time off and breaks very carefully.
If you are not a very self-disciplined person, or would find it too tempting, this needs to be something you consider carefully. However, with good planning and sensible use of your time, working from home can really provide the ultimate flexibility, and give you much greater freedom.
Overlooked point 2: Pressure from home.
This might seem odd, since you are probably well aware of the pressures of office life, but your home is less stressful, and there is almost no pressure there - which is why you want to work from home in the first place, right?
The trouble is that too few people really appreciate the pressure, which their family can unwittingly bring to bear on their business plan. Seeing you at home all day, master of your own time, can easily give the impression that your time is now theirs.
Constant pressure to do little jobs around the house, play with the children, taxi them here and there, do some shopping, and a hundred and one other little daily tasks can eat into your concentration, eat into your precious time, and make you feel guilty for locking yourself away to work.
Bear this in mind, and discuss the whole business plan with your family to ensure they understand how you will need their support.
If you take all of these hindrances to your success into consideration when you work from home, and take steps to ensure that you don't make false assumptions, and that you overlook nothing, than you will have a better than average chance of success with your new home business.

When The Adults Change Everything Changes
Paul Dix
Seismic Shifts in School Behaviour
Tumblr media
Key Notes & Quotes
A book that upends the debate on behaviour management in schools and offers effective strategies that serve to end the search for change in children and turn the focus back onto the adults.
Introduction
The support available to teachers who struggle with behaviour is woeful.
The unrelenting drive for exam results has blunted pastoral care in many schools.
The tide is turning on the behaviour debate. The ‘punishment brigade’ are losing. The appalling lack of respect for teachers is stirred by greedy politicians, ignorant inspectors and the ugly opinions of those who would sell out teachers before breakfast. for a slither of dirty self promotion.
in behaviour management, culture eats strategy for breakfast. Getting the culture right is pivotal. With the right culture the strategies that are used become less important. The culture is set by the way that the adults behave.
Chapter 1: Visible Consistency, Visible Kindness
Behaviour policy and practice should be simple, highly effective and utterly consistent.
Consistency is needed, however this should not be a restrictive consistency that limits flair and patronises poor communities, but a solid base on which to build authentic, exciting behaviour practice. It is a consistency routed in kindness, not, in the machismo of zero tolerance.
What works is consistency, not trying to tackle all behaviour at once but deciding which behaviours are to be taught. it is not relying on the parents to teach it, but by saying ‘You need these behaviours to be a successful learner in this school. We are not going to hide them. We are going to teach you them. We will teach the staff how to do it.’
The foundations of every school must be excellent behaviour. We should be keeping the focus on a visible culture of impeccable conduct, and making the consistency palable, audible and highly visible. Every single day. Smal, persistent and visible shifts in adult nehaviour have an incredible effect on children’s behaviour. The message is: don’t be distracted by temporary distractions; get behaviour right first. Innovative teaching and learning cannot be built on inconsistentA brilliant example of creating and maintaining  behaviour practice.
The rule of three: three rules are easily remembered by all so that everyone uses them all the time.
The best schools have a behaviour plan that is based on tight agreements, simply framed and relentlessly pursued.
Example: Fantastic Walking
What are the visible consistencies in your setting? What could they be? Are they embedded with love or punishment?
Why crush behaviours with punishment when you can grow them with love? Visible consistency with visible kindness allows exceptional behaviour to flourish.
Haim Ginott quotation about the conduct of the individual teacher is startling accurate - ‘I have come to a frightening conclusion. I am the decisive element in the classroom.
Meeting and Greeting
A great example, that instantly highlights the lack of consistency in some, if not most, schools is the meet and greet. Dix points out that even this most basic routine is inconsistent - some teachers want pupils lined up at the door, some want learners standing behind chairs, some want equipment out, some want them in and working immediately.
Meet and greet all your learners with a handshake and a smile (a proper handshake, not a high five or fist pump). Mark the formal start to the lesson at the door.
Behaviour management is a team sport. It needs a team discipline, ehos and look.
The rush in intitial teacher training to collect strategies and comile uniquely individual set of tricks removes the focus from where it need to be: the team, agreed adult behaviour and common values.
Some Key Summaries...
The simpler the agreements, the tighter the consistency. Consistent agreements that are not written down are just wishes.
Don’t overcomplicate things by making an unworkable list of 15 odd daily consistencies - keep it simple. consise and easily memorable.
Make sure your class, department faculty, school or college has a set of three agreed visible consistencies. Challenge those who step away fromt he challenge immediately.
Don’t take your eye off the ball after you’ve successfully made a consistent shift and everyones focus shifts on to something else to the detrimet of the thing you have just changed.
Further Reading:
Teacher and child : a book for parents and teachers / Haim G. Ginott.
The author suggests concepts, attitudes and a language of acceptance and compassion to improve daily situations and psychological problems faced by teachers. He applies his ideas to problems of discipline, criticism, anger, motivation, homework, praise, cooperation, and the conflicting relationships of students, teachers, administrators and parents.
Chapter 2: The Counter Intuitive Classroom
If you really want to screw the system become successful - Jacqueline Lynch, Learning Advisor, Park Campus Academy
Great behaviour management is counter-intuitive. What seems to be the most obvious response to poor behaviour, what is instinctive, often makes the situation worse.
Humiliating children should shame them but for many it seems to fuel their fame and reputation. Hevay puncihsment may seem to crush behaviour in the short term, it may even remove the problem for the teacher temporarily, but it doesn’t teach improved behaviour to those who really need to learn it.
The key to managing your classroom is to know your counter-intuitives and refuse to be rawn by them.
An emotionally led response to bad behaviour shoud always be resisted.
How you behave is more important than how they behave.
When children behave badly give them what they don’t want: a cool, mechanical, emotionless response. Save your emotion, passion, enthusiasm and excitement for when it has most impact - when behaviour is over and above.
Children’s Names on Boards
Where is the research study showing that it is an effective way of managing behaviour? - clue, there isn’t one.
This method chiefly targets learners who always revel in the attention and adulation that challenging authority can bring - naming and faming, not naming and shaming.
In fact, it reconfirms their poor self-image, re-stamps a label of low expectation and provides a perverse incentive to the more subversive mind.
Behaviour Charts
Elaborate hierarchies for rewarding and punishment concocted using questionable metaphors and displayed for everyone to see.
None of these charts do anything other than reinforce labels and publicise poor behaviour.
Knowing How to Behave
Children need to be taught and retaught and retaught expected behaviours.
Your pupils will need to have behaviours recalled and retaught as contexts, curriculum and age change. The trouble is, too often these behaviours are not obvious, or not highlighted and not explicitly taught. Meaning kids end up playing a guessing game of expectations.
Heavy punishment
Usually disproportionate to the crime.
burying children in punishment builds a deep resentment. For the child it often creates a permenant breach of trust.
More ferocious punishment does not result in better behaviour. It simply drives resentment underground and divides the adults and children into ‘them’ and ‘us’. What works is the immediacy of response, not the weight of the sanction.
Recognition Boards
Tumblr media
A recognition board is the simplest way to shift the culture in your classroom.
It is a collaborative strategy: we are one team, focused on one learning behaviour and moving in one direction.
The recognition board fosters a positive interdependence on the classroom, but there is no prize, no material reward. At the end of the lesson/day/session the aim is for everyone to have their name on the board.
Untangle the behaviour in your clzssroom by keeping the positive and negative consequences separate. If a learner has achieved the set focus to attain a a place ont he recognition board, we do not then remove them for bad behaviour.
The kind of approach to behaviour schools take, where good and bad behaviour are tallied against one another is not a reflection of how behaviour works in the real world and society, it distorts the child’s moral compass.
Nine ways to use the recognition board:
Target your recognition board at learning attitudes, not just functional behaviours. Make sure that the behaviour you choose raises the expectation for the children and is not simply something they can already do well.
Names or tallies go on the board to recognise pupils who are demonstrating the desired learning attitude.
Names or tallies are never removed from the board. Learners who disruot are dealt with privately. Once a name is on the recognition board for good conduct it cannot come off for poor conduct. A different repsonse should be given.
Learners can nominate others to be put on the board. Try stopping an activity after 15 minutes and asking them to write up four names of other children who have been consistently demonstrating the desired behaviour. Use it for reflection at the end of lessons.
Emphasise peer responsibility. It is not a competitive between individuals, rather a whole class helping everyone to get their name on the board.
Recognition boards need to be refreshed hourly, daily or weekly depending on the gae of the children and context in which you are working.
Pupils are recognised for effort, not for achievement. Your recognition board should for everyone. Your highest achievers might always be high achievers. They only get on the board when they have shown the required effort.
When everyone has their name on the board a collective ‘whoop’ is appropriate; large rewards are not necessary.
Use the recognition board to persistently and relentlessly catch learners demonstrating the right behaviours.
Token Economies Are Corrupt
Token economies, where a credit or metric system is used to reward individuals, can never be consistent. It always rewards the highest achievers or the worst behaved - the most ‘visible’ children - and it is open to abuse by adults and children alike.
With the best of intention, teachers end up devaluing the currency, usually within the first week.
Seven Counter-intuitives to Practice
Respond to poor behaviour with deliberate calm.
Correct all poor behaviour in private.
Flip names on the board to recognition board and never go back.
Throw out your token economy.
Focus on the immediacy of consequences rather than the weight of punishment.
Re-examine your tracking for individual pupils who are repeatedly disrupting. is their report card becoming a status symbol of celebrity?
Rmeove the beahviour games from your teaching and replace with positive recognition, importance and sense of belonging.
Some Key Summaries...
The concept that some individuals follow people first, then they follow the rules. you cannot expect or demand these individuals to come to your viewpoint, you have to go to where they are standing, understand where they are coming from and then guide them to where they need to be.
Don’t get caught up in the emotion of an incident and allow your intuitive response to override your rational response.
Don’t assume that anger can be crushed with threat of punishment.
Don;t adopt strategies from other teachers without question, what is the evidence that what you are being told will work for your classroom?
Be prepared to say nothing. Sometimes just sitting and waiting with an ‘I am ready when you are’ expression works
Chapter 3 - Deliberate Botheredness
Previously, respect was always expected, never given.
Unfortunately 30 years on the same attitude is still found in schools where the process of managing behaviour is detached from the needs of the child.
The most difficult behaviour can emerge from those with attachment issues at home, desperae for connection.
It is the small stuff, the daily acts of care, the perpetual generosity of spirit, the interest that you show in their lives that matters most - what we would call ‘botheredness’.
using positive recognition, or being bothered, means that you know how to make each child feel appreciated and important. this takes time, effort and commitment on your part. Some children find their sense of importance through fame: the work on display etc., others find their importance in a wuiet word, an extra responsibility or subtle, discreet reinforcement.
Being endlessly bothered is the key to sustaining and maintaining positive rapport with your students.
Children, like adults, want to feel important, valued and liek they belong. They crave it. If that appreciation is not given for positive behaviour then you invite it to be elicited through poor behaviour.
Over and Above
If you constantly reward minimum standards then children will strive for minimum standards. If you reward children for going over an dabove then there is no limit to their excellent behaviour.
Focusing on behaviour that is over and above creates an immediate shift in expectations. It gives the children something more than bare minmum to achieve, it gives them something to reach for. How you recognise these students who go over and above should lie at the heart of your behaviour practice.
Emotional Currency
A smiley face on a piece of work, a recommended book, or news article you cut out just because you knew they’d be interested - opportunities for building emotional currency are easy to find.
Done right, the drip effect of positive recognition beats grand material rewards that shine brightly but soon fade.
Positive Notes
On work, send to their teachers or form tutors, sent home, given directly etc.
Also, positive notes from visiitors and peers as a scheme of recognising good behaviour.
The issue is proportionate response. Balance is important.
Your disproportionate and over-zealous rewarding of children who are badly behaved by default has consequences for other children in terms of their view of the recognition and value of positive notes as a currency.
Positive notes to colleagues is also sometimes nice :)
Worksheet Weary
Worksheets are for the teachers not for the students.
If you know how to do it then a worksheet is redundant, if you don’t know how to do it then a worksheet won’t help.
Some Key Summaries...
Don’t try and be ‘down with the youth’ or take on ‘overbotherdness’ - its just weird.
Over and above - you need to make sure that ALL of your students are equally likely to receive recognition - think about those who are always quietly geting on.
Triangulate your botheredness with other colleagues so that it is reinforced.
Go to the netball game, or after school disco, turn up, be a part of outward bound expeditions. Your botheredness cannot be a performance that lives in the classroom and dies when the bell goes at the end of the day. students know the teachers who always show up, whose support for them is visible and who are there when others have disappeared.
Chapter 4 - Certainty in Adult Behaviour
Be kind, be humble, be nice.
Although teachers share many values, those that relate to behaviour can be tricky. They are wrapped up in the type of schools each teacher has worked in, their own experience of school as a child, their own experiences of parenting and their political beliefs.
In order to change these divisive core values we need to resseruct the idea that we are stronger and more consistent when we stand together, everyone compromising a little to make the message utterly clear for the children's nd all staff pursuing common values for the good of everybody.
the key to correcting behaviour with minimal effort - absolute certainty - the children know that they will be recognised for going over and above. They are as certain in it as they are that their poor behaviour will result in consequences.
It is certainty that is at the heart of all exceptional behaviour practitioners... certainty is powerful enough on its own... what they have honed is a certainty around their expectations for behaviour that are expected, respected and unquestioned.

Just just after fertilization, all cells from the freshly shaped zygote are kind of equivalent. Each individual and every single one of several cells undergoes cell division to supply a lot more cells that seem like it. This is cell replication. Soon after some time (and with some input from signaling variables), Some cells start out to change to resemble cells that don’t appear to be them. Some modify into muscle cells, bone cells, blood cells, and so forth. This is named mobile differentiation. Individuals earlier undifferentiated cells are called stem cells (the imagery powerful you to think of differentiated cells as branch cells). Now, stem cells applications even soon after differentiation has occurred, not each individual stem mobile differentiates. Some maintain their possible so they can serve as a regenerative backup just in case the human body’s cells get ruined or broken.
The basic principle of most of the different cell therapies and mobile therapy products and solutions we know is this. Not like organ transplants exactly where HLA compatibility is important, stem cells are certainly not rejected, despite the donor.

Current developments have brought about methods of classifying stem cells primarily based on their own potential of self-renewal as well as their ability to differentiate into any cell of an organism.
Summary
It can not be denied that stem cell therapy has a lot of health Added benefits, both equally explored and unexplored. Much more investigate into it will provide adjustments on a unique scale into the health-related discipline and perhaps even transform lifetime as we realize it. The Advantages of Health Care Reform
As a result of the Affordable Care Act, health insurance is simpler to get for the large part. Coverage is crucial, so look for expert guidance from a dependable and knowledgeable broker to pick the appropriate health program. Normally, the deductible is set at a greater amount than the conventional medical insurance plans.
There, you can get quotes from all the main insurance providers speedily. Explore your choices and eligibility for more discounts by sending an email to or calling the Insurance Marketplace to make certain that you get the least expensive and most economical medical insurance program that's fit for your requirements. Medical insurance providers can no longer pre-screen individuals, but rather must provide an insurance policy policy to anybody who wants to purchase one.
Tumblr media
People today appear to be quite vocal against it. Consumers can comprehend the basic provisions, visit market place together with explore plans under standard heights of coverage. Furthermore, the great majority of consumers qualify for tax credits that reduce the price of coverage under the sticker price.
A Secret Weapon for Health Care Reform
No matter your personal beliefs, if you believe the ACA does not have any flawsyou have zero credibility in a reasoned debate. Naturally, because the individual mandate is currently regarded as tax, you'll find it simpler to repeal, requiring only a very simple majority in the House of Representatives and Senate (together with a Republican president who won't veto the repeal). The Affordable Care Act of 2010 has made a uniform process for appealing wellness insurance policy claim denials to the other side of the usa.
Type of Health Care Reform
In the event you're dabbling with the idea of getting your child a mobile phone think of all of these suggestions in mind. There are good things and bad things about the notion of a government-run healthcare system. My main issue has been that it can be challenging to find a person to take responsibility for an issue and help you with it.
How to Choose Health Care Reform
Needless to say, internet is just one of the greatest regions to choose to research best options out there for your requirements and perhaps even tight budget. In technical provisions, software for a service is software that's delivered over the world wide web to customers. PayPal company supplies you with to create various varieties of account.
The Bad Side of Health Care Reform
The procedure for paying for any type of long-term care, if it be a nursing home, in-home care, or something different, can be confusing. You can accomplish this by deciding on a program that can support your normal prescription needs and your common medical needs. Nobody can decide if weight loss surgery is best for you, other than you with the assistance of your physician.
Though short-term medical insurance plans have come to be very well known in last 3 years they are not for everybody. You know you're likely to take much better care of this population, and you're absolutely likely to have lower health care expenses. Third, health insurance is valuable to children in several distinct ways.
There are a large number of tools available to assist you manage your projects. Concentrate on learning as much as possible, and most of all, concentrate on strengthening your team and yourself. The program's child-specific advantages and child-focused provider networks are made in recognition of how kids have unique wellness and developmental needs.
It's a fairly sad truth that medical debt is the single biggest source of private bankruptcy filings in the nation. It features the periodical payment of a particular quantity of money to a company, which delivers the healthcare program. If you're not offered too many advantages by your organization, then opting for this facility can prove to be advantageous as you'll get a reimbursement for medical and other expenses.
Increasing the level of freedom individuals have in getting a medical insurance program would, naturally, increase the level of competition which exists among firms that provide those plans. 1 solution favorable in the hospitality and retail industries is to raise the quantity of employees, while decreasing the period of time worked per employee. In the event you were working with a local business, you might have noticed a turnaround of simply a couple of hours, leading to a shorter project timeframe and cost savings arising from better productivity.
The Lost Secret of Health Care Reform
Some types of short-term medical missions are somewhat more powerful than others, scientists have found. More important, if someone believes that aging contributes to inevitable health troubles and decline, that person might quit engaging in healthy behaviors, developing a self-fulfilling prophecy. More likely, those exact same individuals, being denied basic therapy, annual preventative measures, and prophylactic care will wind up costing the system billions more, to be covered by the very same individuals that are currently cheering the so-called bonanza they are just about to receive.
Term life insurance is excellent for those who only want coverage during a particular time period in their lives to guard those who rely on their earnings. Insurers have to supply a minimum standard of coverage and cannot deny coverage based on pre-existing ailments. This plan won't achieve universal coverage.
Social Security isn't going anywhere, and the majority of people are in fact pretty savvy in regards to living within their means. It's no secret that america spends an atrocious amount annually on healthcare. As stated by the most recent Commonwealth Fund report, the USA spends more on healthcare than every other industrialized country but ranks at or close to the bottom in nearly every measure of comparative quality.
Well the thing is that at the conclusion of the year whatever you didn't spend (from an extremely limited set of healthcare expenses), you lose. After the choice was designed to leave a position, there are frequently many specifics and loose ends that must be tied up before the previous day at work. This kind of plan can cover you as soon as you're off campus and even when you're going abroad.
Exercising away from the gym demands a particular quantity of discipline and self-motivation, so you ought to take this into consideration. Getting healthy became much more difficult. Because next time that it could be you.
Key Pieces of Health Care Reform
Based on your perceived level of danger, particular kinds of health insurance might be unavailable to you. Also, doctors would find it simple to answer queries of patients if they can explain the process through a visual medium. Moreover, recent developments in the sphere of mental health and addiction discuss the effect of the range of individuals receiving treatment.
A more sustainable strategy is to help local communities build their medical care systems in order that they can deal with their very own people without foreign guidance. Health insurance needs to be actively contracted by the individual since there is not anybody single-payer, public German medical insurance provider. It would be far less costly than effectively nationalizing health care and offer more benefit.
Any out-of-network care will just require a greater patient financial responsibility. Please also offer links to resources on the subject of medical care. The new services will probably be paid-for services.
The Downside Risk of Health Care Reform
Without this information, it can be tough to determine whether or not a provider is reputable, regardless of what they say. Regardless of the very low growth trajectory, the business has been aggressively making acquisitions to escape from the slow growth cycle. Insurance companies can't rely on pricing the chance of any given consumer as the main driver behind their company model.
