She'd play drums and tambourines to keep time for her sisters as they played other instruments or danced in their recreational time. In this cartoon, St. Teresa receives a new drum kit, but it's too big for her to play alone. Drum kits aren't normally meant for two people, but as the other nun points out, this a "co-nun-drum." A conundrum is a dilemma (like having a drum made for two people when you only have one drummer). A co-nun-drum is a drum made for two nuns to co-play (play cooperatively).

As I was doing research for my upcoming fanfiction The Imperial House, a Goong Fusion. Where Tsukushi Makino, the heroine from Hana Yori Dango, ends up finding she is in an arranged marriage to a Prince of Japan who may be a member of the F4. I came across The Silver Drum: A Japanese Memoir which was written by the late Setsuko, Princess Chichibu who married into the Imperial family.

I was able to get a second-hand copy for cheap, that was basically brand new, and so far I have to say Princess Chichibu had a fascinating childhood. Her father gave up his nobility, she may have been the first commoner to marry into the royal family on a technicality. That same father also served as the Japanese Ambassador to the US and she moved to the States. She ended up living in Washington DC and was a student at Sidwell Friends School, where many children of US Presidents attended.

Honestly, I couldn't put this book down. However, after finishing reading this memoir of her life, I'm taking this book with a grain of salt.  Clearly, there are things in this work that Princess Chichiburu didn't want to share with us and I respect that.  However, I'm grateful this book exists. It did give me an idea of what Tsukushi might deal with in my work. The passages of how Princess Chichiburu felt disconnected from her family because of her status, felt essential for me to read and understand the mindset of a woman becoming part of the Imperial Family.

I wouldn't recommend this book for everyone, especially since it's out of print. However, after I bought my copy I found out my university had an ebook of this novel under another name. If you check your university for Prince and Princess Chichibu: Two Lives Lived Above and Below the Clouds.  I gave it a quick look through and this version had more content, including the unabridged version of her memoir.

And then the hallowed anon wrote in to very generously share their experience and logistics with using drumsticks to... uhhh drum a different kind of beat, if you will. With drumsticks. Hence the name

Niche Instrument #1 - The West African Djembe

So I was raised pretty heavily in the music world, and I've decided to share a delightful little instrument with you all that was technically the first instrument I've ever played.

This is an African djembe drum. According to Wikipedia, the djembe gets its name from the Bambara phrase "Anke djé, anke bé," which translates as "Everyone gather together in peace." The djembe is a deceptively powerful instrument: what looks to be a simple hand-played conga spin-off is actually an extremely loud drum.

The djembe is extremely versatile despite its simplicity. By using a firm, strong slap in the middle of the drum, the player can create a rich, deep, booming bass tone. By loosely slapping the middle of the drum, a brighter "snare" tone can be produced. Lastly, by hitting the rim of the drum, a highly distinct, almost "ringing" tone can be made, giving a decent djembe player one of the most versatile hand drums in the world to work with.

The laird of the Castle of Drum had been married to a daughter of the Gordons of Huntly. While the laird was away to the Jacobite wars she divorced him. When he came home he fell for a young shepherd lass and asked her to marry. His brother and family did not approve and when the wedding party arrived at the castle none of the lords and lairds would acknowledge the new lady of the Drum. Traditional Water Drums

Water drums are a category of membranophone characterized by the filling of the drum chamber with some water to create a unique resonant sound. The presence of the water within gives the sound far greater carrying power than a dry drum possesses. At close range, the tone of the water drum is often a dull thud, but when properly tuned by an experienced drummer it has a resonance that can be heard for miles. No drum can be heard so far; it is on record that water drums have been heard eight to ten miles over a lake. This capacity to be heard distinctly at a distance, coupled with a peculiar tone quality, gives the water drum a very unique voice.

Water drums are used all over the world, including African music and American Indian music, and are made of various materials, with a membrane stretched over a hard body such as a metal, clay or wood. The Native American Church uses a black iron kettle with three tripod legs. The leather drum head is soaked in water before being stretched over the kettle. Clay pot drums were common among many eastern and southern tribes in the ancient days, those of the South using a semicircular-shaped bowl with legs. The pottery water drum of the Pueblo Indians is a vase-shaped pot with a flared out top. Pueblo water drums vary in size from small pots holding a gallon of water up to huge ones measuring thirty or more inches in diameter. These are filled about one-fourth full of water and the wet hide is tied over the top. When not in use the tanned drumhead and rawhide thong for tying it are kept inside the pot.  

Wooden water drums are the traditional percussion instrument for the Native American Anishinaabe (Ojibwe), Ottawa, Potawatomi, Huron and Iroquois peoples. The Eastern Woodland tribes made far greater use of water drums than any other Native peoples, and attached a greater significance to them. To the Anishinaabe and their many neighboring tribes, the water drum is a true medicine drum of great power, the sacred drum of the Midewiwin or Grand Medicine Society, which is at the core of Anishinaabe religion. Water is synonymous with life, hence it adds great potency to the water drum. Its sacred sound is regarded as one of the most effective ways of establishing connections with the spirit realm, since it travels through space, permeates visual and physical barriers, and conveys information from the unseen world. It is widely used today in traditional Longhouse social dances and ceremonies.
