sorry for the short break!!
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra plays Thomas Adès’ Ecstasio
Ecstasio is a beautiful tune brimming with the frantic energy of the 21st century. It was famously inspired by EDM music, and succeeds at imitating that genre with flying colors. It’s moreover emblematic of the strange place of orchestral music in today’s world; barring such cases as films and video games, contemporary classical feels strangely out of place in today’s world in the wake of the popularization of electronic music. Ecstasio, to me, captures quite well the dissonance between contemporary classical and avant-garde electronic music.
The entirety of Adès’ Asyla is, needless to say, sublime, but Ecstasio sticks out as a strangely addicting tune despite its insistence on barely clinging to the syncopated rhythm from which it inspires itself; it pays no mind to such concerns as time signature and tempo, and feels strangely rubato despite everything. It is important to note the sheer virtuosity put on display by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; the horns and strings and percussion have unimaginable talent for managing to hold together such a strange, confusing tune as this.
The mimicry of EDM’s syncopated style is exceptional. The slow, quiet pontecello fading out after the ecstatic tune has left leaves an unsure peace in the listener’s mind.

Len - Steal My Sunshine
i know this song because my parents used to play it a lot. the music video and sound both lean very hard into that late 90s early 2000s feel. one of my favorite things they do is that weird overdubbing on the vocals. it sounds so pretty and surreal. i also adore that weird percussion sound that they use. i’m unsure what instrument it is but it really sticks out. the almost honky-tonk syncopation on the piano is to die for and really holds the whole thing together. very fun tune! i dig it.
