Memoir of a Snail | Claymation feature Dir.Ā Adam Elliot,Ā Australia, 2024.
Every single frame handmade.
A young womanā€™s journey to overcome loss and embrace herself; Gracie maintains a gentle stoicism that protects the very spark of kindness that leaves her vulnerable to abuse in the first place.
She finds comfort in the company of an eccentric misfit who is full of grit and lust for life.
And navigates loneliness and longing for a deeply loved twin brother.
Poignant, heartfelt and comedically told.
I adored it.
Director, Adam Elliot writes in the press notes (and itā€™s worth a read for anyone trying to make original work):
ā€˜Like most artists I strive for perfection but know this is a hopeless ambition. There is always a shot Iā€™d like to redo, a line to rewrite; the day the film gets locked is bittersweet.Ā Memoir of a SnailĀ has taken eight years to form and now the film is complete I feel sad the journey is over. Weā€™ve tried our hardest with the budget we had; made many sacrifices to ensure Graceā€™s story got told with dignity and respect. They may be just little blobs of clay, but to my team and I, they are real people. Through the magic of stopmotion we truly hope their little lives give meaning, joy, and comfort to those who watch.ā€™
Do check outĀ Memoir of a SnailĀ either at MIFF, or when it comes out in cinemas in October this year.
Memoir of a SnailĀ opened at the 72ndĀ Melbourne International Film FestivalĀ on 8 August. The film will be on general release in Australia throughĀ MadmanĀ from 17 October 2024.
Winner of Annecyā€™s Cristal Award for Best Feature Film.

The (No)vember Experiment
Whatā€™s the longest you and your dreamboat have gone without getting frisky? Are the two of you constantly teeming with insatiable desire? Canā€™t keep your hands to yourselves for more than a moment? Depending on your answers to any one of those questions, the idea of going an ENTIRE month without chasing ā€œThe Big Oā€ may sound like either a breeze, a curse or a blessing in disguise! Wouldnā€™t you like to find out which?Ā
Thatā€™s right! We at the KWā™„ļæ½ļæ½ļæ½LOVE offices are challenging our readers and their lovers to a month-long experiment to test their self-restraint! Yes, you read that rightā€“ AN ENTIRE MONTH without ā€œThe Big Oā€! Think you can handle it? Rip off the October page of that wall calendar, whip out your favorite marker and get to Xā€™ing off the days until you complete(or forfeit) the NOvember experiment!
We encourage all participants to print out the survey weā€™ve created for the occasion to fill out and give feedback on your experiences! Keep them for your records in case you participate again next NOvember, discard them when the experiment is over or send them in and weā€™ll include your feedback in next monthā€™s intimacy column!
[Any submissions will be carefully reviewed by our team. All personal identifiers such as names and unique nicknames will be redacted to ensure the safety and security of our readers before publishing.]

The furrows in his brows were made more prominent the longer he stared at your message: a single skull emoji and words written in all capital letters, ā€˜DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU SENT ME?!ā€™ which was followed by a combination of punctuation that he could only describe as exaggerated. No matter how long he turned the situation over in his mind, he couldnā€™t fathom why youā€™d react in such a way.Ā
Wasnā€™t this the exact sort of thing you were talking about when you vocalized your dissatisfaction in the relationship with him? Something about bonding and rekindling the connection?
It felt a little foolish now, but he was so certain that youā€™d have been over the moon with the idea. Was it really bad enough to warrant such an adverse reaction?Ā
He supposed he could return to the drawing board and do a little more research but he wasnā€™t sure if he had it in him at this very moment. With a light sigh, he locked his phone and lifted himself off of the grey sectional, ignoring his cell when it dropped onto the floor near the ottoman.Ā
He decided that he could go and check in about dinner. At least, that he knew youā€™d appreciate.Ā
The moment and not a second later that your eyes fell onto him you burst into a laughing fit which only further confused him. Not only was his idea bad, but it was hilarious to you? That couldnā€™t have been it could it? Heā€™d begun to wonder if heā€™d somehow missed something.Ā
ā€œWhat is it?ā€ he asked, and he wondered if you could pick up on his mild frustration or if he'd done a decent enough job of masking it.Ā
ā€œThat thing you sent me!ā€ you continued to giggle as you dipped your wooden ladle into the steaming stock pot. ā€œWhat made you send that out of the blue?ā€
He stared at you for a moment.Ā
Wasnā€™t he just on the receiving end of your tears a few nights ago as you confessed that you felt as if the two of you drifted? That you were feeling neglected? That he didnā€™t try enough to have quality time with you?
What could have been so random about the idea? As far as he was concerned, it was fairly topical.Ā
The corners of his mouth tugged downward before he finally spoke up, ā€œI thought you would enjoy that sort of thingā€¦ You said that we didnā€™t spend enough time together these days.ā€
After the words came out, he realized how accusatory he sounded but he didnā€™t intend for it to come off that way. He just couldnā€™t swallow his frustration.Ā
Nothing about this felt right.Ā
ā€œIā€™m sorry, Kazuma. I donā€™t mean to laugh.ā€ though you had a pretty funny way of showing it. ā€œItā€™s just a littleā€“ Okay, so you think that by having less sex, we couldā€“ā€
ā€œLess what?ā€Ā
He had no clue what expression he was making but the moment he registered realization washing over your features, he was quickly able to piece together that the two of you seemed to be having totally different conversations.Ā
ā€œY-you sent a link to an articleā€¦ā€ you said, laying the ladle down to whip out the cell phone in your back pocket. ā€œA coupleā€™s test or challenge or something? No sex for 30 days?ā€
ā€œI did? Iā€“ā€
Very quickly he found himself at your side, chest pressed to your shoulder as you flicked your thumb across the screen to pull up the article in question.Ā
Right there in big, bold, black letters were the words The (No)vember Experiment. The tension he didnā€™t even realize was in his neck and shoulders melted away in an instant.Ā
So, it was a misunderstandingā€¦ Of course, it was a misunderstanding!
Truthfully, if he werenā€™t so preoccupied with his relief that you didnā€™t dislike his idea so strongly, he might have found himself feeling a little more embarrassed at the contents of the article that he did send which you so graciously chose to read aloud.Ā
ā€œI meant to send something else.ā€ he said, folding an arm over his chest as he used his free hand to stroke at his goatee. ā€œNot sure how a mix up like that could happenā€¦ā€
ā€œWell,ā€ you smiled, looking over your shoulder at him. ā€œIt wouldnā€™t be the first time, right?ā€
Rightā€¦Ā
Well, heā€™d never been the best with technology.Ā
Just when he thought heā€™d figured one thing out, itā€™s suddenly replaced by something new and slightly more complicated. He could never keep up. Between you and his kids, he was able to learn enough about his phone to get by but that didnā€™t come without its mishaps.Ā
The most recent example that he could recall was the time he accidentally sent a photo of these special series cleats that Mitsuo wanted to Haruka then inquired about the size he needed. Thinking that it was meant to be a surprise, she was able to help but after he sent a text of gratitude with the otherā€™s name, she teased him about the mix up for daysā€“ and sheā€™d even gotten Mitsuo in on it, who promptly texted him asking if heā€™d accidentally save their numbers under the wrong names.Ā
It was a little embarrassing but a much needed lesson because since then, heā€™s made certain that heā€™s sending his messages to the intended party butā€¦ what use was that when he wound up sending the wrong things?
Your voice lured him back to the present when you asked what he meant to send and his ears began to heat up at the thought of having to explain it now, in person.Ā
ā€œSomething about having a two person book club together.ā€ he managed.Ā
You enjoyed reading and he didnā€™t mind himself reading a good book every once in a while. It seemed harmless enough. The author of the article described it as ā€˜the perfect way to engage in meaningful conversation while subtly promoting the importance of one-on-one timeā€™ and while you didnā€™t quite use that many words, that was roughly what you were hinting at in that tear-filled conversation.
He thought that by sharing the idea, youā€™d realize that he didnā€™t ignore your needs like you thought he did. He wanted you to be happy, but he didnā€™t quite nail the execution.Ā
ā€œOh, was it this one?ā€ you asked, tapping a recommended article on the side of the small screen.Ā
One look at the sappy stock photo and he knew that it was the one.
ā€œYeah.ā€ he answered, taking a few steps back from you to rest against the wall as you read over the article and when you finished, you beamed at him.
ā€œWait, this is actually a really cute idea!ā€
He felt a triumphant smile tugging at his lips but he fought against it and repeated his same simple affirmation from before.Ā
ā€œAre you sure that this is something you want to try? I mean, you won't find it boring or anything?ā€
He gave you a nod and finally, a small smile now that he felt confident enough to contain it.Ā
Your eyes raked over him as you absentmindedly tapped your cell against your chin, obviously turning something over in your own head. Then, your eyes glimmered when you reached your conclusion.Ā
ā€œWhat do you think of combining both ideas?ā€ you asked.Ā
The furrows returned, ā€œā€˜Bothā€™?ā€Ā
ā€œThe November thing and the book club idea?ā€
Truthfully, after feeling so pleased with himself for getting to see the reaction heā€™d hoped for, heā€™d very quickly forgotten about his little blunder. Heā€™d have to go over it again to understand the details but when you beamed at him the way you were, he figured that it couldnā€™t hurt. So, he agreed.Ā
However, when your sweet smile twisted into something a little more sinister, he considered if maybe, just maybe, he should have asked a couple of follow up questions before signing at the proverbial dotted line.Ā
ā€œI know exactly which book we can start with.ā€ you said, returning your attention to the stockpot on the stove. ā€œIā€™ll order them after I finish up here.ā€
He nodded, then offered you a helping hand as heā€™d originally intended albeit, now feeling a little more chipper.

Tumblr media
Youā€™d lost him. He was quiet. Quieter than usual. It was your anniversary and he was quiet for goodness sake. Your talk from the other night crossed your mind and you considered if maybe youā€™d pressured him so much that now he was feeling too overwhelmed to make an effort.Ā
But, that couldnā€™t have been it, right?Ā
After all, why would he pull out all the stops planning such a beautiful evening? Gussying himself up in semi-formal attire that was as closely matched to yours as possible? Pushing himself out of his comfort zone to woo you? Wine and dine you? Surely he wouldnā€™t exhaust all that effort just to shut you out the moment you hailed a cab homeā€¦Ā
Right?
Actually, there had been something a little off about him since your entrees were placed in front of you. At first you considered that perhaps, heā€™d had a little too much to drink but after his second whiskey, heā€™d practically gorged himself in water.Ā
So, that couldnā€™t be it.Ā
It was such a shame, you thought as you slid your key into the front door lock. He looked so mouthwateringly delectable tonight that if heā€™d have suggested skipping dessert so that you could rush home, you wouldnā€™t have been the least bit upset about it.Ā
Drawn in to him by the scent of that cologne that had a Pavlovian effect on your body, you wanted to smother him.Ā
Shower him your affection.Ā
Drown him in smooches from one head to the other and otherwise, thank him for such a lovelyā€“ no, magical evening.Ā
However, this mood of his was anything but encouraging and when he ripped himself out of his coat at the first click of the unlocked door as if he couldnā€™t get out of it fast enough, you were practically resigned to the fact that the ā€˜magical eveningā€™ you were internally gushing over had drawn to a premature close.Ā
After stepping out of your shoes, you left him in the entryway to kick out of his own and hang up his coat. Toes wiggling in celebration of their new found freedom, you trudged your way down the single step to the living room and over to the sectional then allowed yourself to sink, not caring which way your limbs fell in the process.Ā
Burying your face into the back cushion, you swallowed hard at the lump forming in your throat. You guessed that Kazuma would head straight to the bedroom to dress down or maybe shower off the long day and when he did, you considered if maybe youā€™d allow yourself to cry just a little.Ā
Instead of that, you were met with a heavy blanket of warmth in the form of a man resting his cheek on your rising and falling belly after making room for himself between your parted legs. Heā€™d tucked his hands beneath your waist as he nuzzled into you and a soupƧon of that cologne caressed your nostrils.Ā
You lifted yourself onto your forearms, first spotting his soft dark hair next the sliver of his handsome face.Ā
ā€œYou look so perfect tonight.ā€ he spoke against you, slightly muffling himself. His voice was already so low that you were left questioning if youā€™d heard what you thought you did.Ā
Though, judging by the rouge tinting his ear, the likelihood of him repeating himself verbatim was guaranteed to be slim.
ā€œI know Iā€™ve asked this before but, are you sure youā€™re okay?ā€
He drew your waist in even tighter and though you couldnā€™t see his lips fully, the lift at his cheek told you that heā€™d been smiling when he said, ā€œNever been better.ā€
You combed through his thick hair, giving the short strands closest to his neck a light twist as you huffed out a sigh.Ā
ā€œAnd yet, here I am thinking that youā€™re upset with me somehow.ā€Ā
He almost flinched at your words then lifted himself to get a good look at your face.Ā
His furrows were deep and his eyes were slightly widened and geezā€“ he had no fucking idea.Ā
ā€œWhatā€“ā€ he began with a grunt as he lifted himself off you entirely. You quickly maneuvered so that he could take a proper seat on the sectional with you. ā€œWhat would I have to be upset about?ā€
You humped your shoulders, ā€œIā€™m not sure, Iā€“ I noticed you seemed to get a little strange after a certain point of our dinner and when we got in the taxiā€“ā€
ā€œNo, sorry, Iā€“ā€ he said, shaking his head. ā€œIā€™m not upset about anything.ā€
You wanted to press him for more information but you didnā€™t fully trust yourself to not sound frustrated so you settled for a mildly expectant look and he understood immediately.Ā
ā€œAll night, Iā€™ve been thinking about how to strike up a conversation about those chapters we were supposed to read. I just wasnā€™t sure when it would be the right time, consideringā€¦ā€ he trailed off.Ā
Suddenly, it all made so much sense. The hard look in his face when you caught him staring at you, the way heā€™d suddenly shifted his gaze when you questioned him about it, the dusty rose that tinged his cheeks off and onā€“ all of it was because he was trying to work himself up to discuss the novel youā€™d been reading together, in public.Ā
The erotic novel you had been reading together.Ā
Your lips curled into a smile and at the moment, the memory that you were just seconds away from spending the remaining evening of your anniversary in tears was virtually wiped from the record.
ā€œDamn it, Kazuma.ā€ you hissed, playfully giving his thigh a tap with your foot which he quickly caught and rested in his lap. ā€œYou stressed me out for nothing!ā€
His gaze dropped to your foot as he gave the heel a gentle squeeze and uttered out yet another apology.Ā
You didnā€™t need another apology, though.Ā
This was just yet another instance of you and Kazumaā€™s neverending trial of miscommunications and misunderstandings. If anyone ever thought to give out awards for that, the two of you would bring home the grandest trophy of them all and yetā€“ You loved that man.Ā
The excitement of knowing that there was plenty of opportunity to salvage this night, you bounced in your seat and propped yourself onto your elbow that you were now resting against at the back of the sectional.Ā
ā€œSo? What did you think? Do you finally see what I mean when I say that the felon character reminds me of you? Uh, no offense.ā€ you said, raising your hand when you realized how that sounded.Ā
He chuckled in that soft, airy way that he does as he nodded. ā€œYeah, I suppose we do have kind of similar qualitiesā€“ outside of being a felon.ā€
ā€œI mean, even the way the narrator describes him reminds me of you. I reaaally like himā€¦ But, I think in a way, when I picture him in my head, I sort of picture you.ā€
Again, he chuckled. ā€œIā€™m not so sure that youā€™re meant to like him like thatā€“ā€
ā€œThatā€™s the beauty of erotica. They make the love interest so bad for you that you canā€™t help but want them.ā€Ā
ā€œIā€™m not sure I get that.ā€ he said, a soft smile still raising his cheeks. ā€œBut, I do get what you mean about being reminded of someoneā€¦ I think Iā€™m sort of drawn to the protagonist because of all the ways Iā€™m reminded of you.ā€Ā
ā€œThen I guess theyā€™re a perfect match, huh?ā€
ā€œIn that way, Iā€™d like to think that they are.ā€ he said, now fully massaging your foot.Ā
ā€œDid you finish both chapters?ā€ you asked, wiggling your brows. ā€œDid you get to the scene of them on the floor?ā€
Kazuma drew in a sharp breath and his jaws clenched, then he gently removed your foot from his lap and shifted uncomfortably in his seat before answering with a shaky affirmative.
The imagery of the scene in question flashed in your mind and your bottom lip quickly found itself tucked between your teeth.Ā
For a while, he stared at the floor ahead of him and you couldnā€™t help but wonder if he was at all thinking what you were. After a long moment of thick silence, he stretched his arms out on the back of the section and slouched a little further into his seat then allowed his head to loll back against it as well.Ā
Studying his profile; his heavy lidded gaze at the ceiling, the way his perfectly shaped lips hang ever so slightly open, that familiar rouge from nose to ear and that repetitive bob of his Adamā€™s apple as if heā€™d found his own saliva too thick to swallow, caused you to squirm in your own seat.Ā
He was almost too inviting to resist but the moment he turned those heavy lidded eyes on you, you accepted that you couldnā€™t.Ā
Kazuma welcomed your sudden impulse to straddle him by caging both sides of your face with his big, warm hands and bringing you in for the greediest of kisses.Ā
Frenzied.
Impassioned.Ā
He kissed you with urgency as if kissing you like this was his final hope at keeping you alive but the irony of that was that his intensity left you with very little chance to breathe. For a moment, it was even as if youā€™d completely forgotten how to. Each tangle of your wet muscles left you moaning through one breath and gasping for air in the next.Ā
Every part of your body sought to claim himā€“ your nails dragged across his scalp, your lips sucked at his strong neck, your knees locked him in place while your hips and waist rocked and rolled against the part of him that was seemingly just as eager to meet as you were.Ā
And he didnā€™t seem to want you any other way.Ā
Quiet moans pushed through his thoroughly abused lips as his thick fingers burrowed into your thighs, wordlessly encouraging you to make use of him as you saw fit.Ā
He was soā€¦Ā  receptive tonight and judging by the groans that heā€™d been choking back, painfully sensitive.
It only just dawned on you just how long it had been since you were last together and you had zero desire in prolonging it any furtherā€“ not when both your bodies responded to each other so politely.Ā
His lips were back in hot pursuit of you when you broke away from him, leaving him to look up at you through adoring but intensely heated eyes. His chest heaving.Ā
He seemed to struggle to let you go when you lifted yourself off his lap and his gaze remained glued to you as you nudged away the weightless ottomanā€“ as you sank down to the floorā€“ as you spread your legs wide for him.Ā
The moment your index finger curled to beckon him to the floor, he dove to you, yanking his tie on the way down.

Coca-Cola is now on the official BDS boycott list!
From the website:
November 2024
1) Why?
Because Coca-Cola is implicated in Israeli war crimes.
According to research by WhoProfits, the Central Beverage Company, known as Coca-Cola Israel, which is the exclusive franchisee of the Coca-Cola Company in Israel, ā€œoperates a regional distribution center and cooling houses in the [Israeli] Atarot Settlement Industrial Zone.ā€ Furthermore, its subsidiary, Tabor Winery, ā€œproduces wines from grapes sourced from vineyards located on occupied land in settlements in the West Bank and Syrian Golan.ā€Ā
The International Court of Justice affirmed in July 2024 that Israelā€™s entire occupation of Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is illegal, as are all Israeli settlements built on occupied land. As Israeli settlements ā€“ on occupied Palestinian and Syrian land ā€“ are considered war crimes under international law, Coke is complicit in a war crime.Ā
Corporations that are implicated in the commission of international crimes connected to Israelā€™s unlawful occupation, racial segregation and apartheid regime - within or beyond the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967 - are all complicit and must be held accountable. Direct complicity includes military, logistical, intelligence, financial and infrastructure support. The corporations, as well as their boards of directors and executives, may face criminal liability for this complicity.
Local alternatives are popping up worldwide to substitute Coca-Cola, an unnecessary and replaceable beverage
Local alternatives to Coca-Cola have been gaining market share across the world, including in Palestine, China, Bangladesh, Sweden, Egypt, India, South Africa, Turkey, Lebanon and elsewhere.
2) Why NOW?
The BDS movement has always considered Coca-Cola boycottable but has not prioritized it as a target based on its careful and strategic target-selection criteria, so why endorse the Coke boycott now?Ā
Human rights and health activists, among many others, have been campaigning against Coca-Cola and similarly complicit corporations for decades, including grassroots drives targeting the company for its complicity in Israelā€™s gross violations of Palestinian human rights.Ā
During Israelā€™s ongoing, livestreamed genocide, Israeli soldiers have often been pictured with Coke cans, donated to them by various genocide-enabling groups. This has provoked even more anger against the company, particularly given that Israel is starving 2.3 million Palestinians in the occupied and besieged Gaza Strip, severely limiting their access to clean water and, as a result, inducing the mass spread of contagious diseases.Ā
Given this context, Palestinian activists in Gaza and many BDS activists in the Arab world, in many Muslim-majority countries, and in some European countries as well, have called on the BDS movement to add Coke to its priority targets.
The BDS movement had previously targeted General Mills for its manufacturing of Pillsbury products in the illegal Atarot Settlement Industrial Zone - the same Zone where the Coke facility operates. Thanks to effective BDS campaigning, we won the demand for General Mills to end its business in Atarot. We know a campaign against Coke is winnable too.Ā
Based on all the above, and given Cokeā€™s large contribution (through business-as-usual and taxes) to Israelā€™s war chest during the genocide, the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC), the largest Palestinian coalition leading the global BDS movement, has endorsed the grassroots, organic #BoycottCoke campaigns to pressure the company to end its complicity in Israelā€™s illegal occupation, apartheid and genocide.Ā

Hi. It seems so many campaigns have been stagnating. If you haven't donated this month and have the means to at all, even by selling art or things you don't need, please do. Things are desperate. One such family, that of my friend @samah-h , is in deseprate need of support for food and other basic survival items and costs. They are important to me, as family of my dear friend @bilal-salah0 as well. Please consider even donating 5 dollars to their campaign. It has severely stagnated.

And before anyone asks, no I don't think violence is a first resort nor something that should be done thoughtlessly. But when you try to utilize peaceful means of communication and understanding, and your oppressor ignores those peaceful means (that they were not entitled to, but were done as a peaceful courtesy), the end result isn't "well I guess I'll just die quietly to maintain their comfort, since asking nicely didn't work". Y'all love MLK and bypass that "riot is the voice of the unheard" quote every time. Maybe instead of judging those who chose retaliation, you should start judging those who were offered peace in exchange for equality and spat in its face. šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø

urgently need help.
I am Mai, and I write to you today feeling both weak and desperate. My family is going through an incredibly difficult time in Gaza, where crises keep piling up with no end in sight. But the pain I feel right now is not just because of what weā€™re enduring in Gaza, but because my father suddenly fell ill, and he is now in Egypt urgently needing a catheterization procedure to have a stent placed.
This procedure is vital to save his life, but the cost ranges from $1300 to $1500, an amount that we simply cannot afford given the difficult economic conditions we are facing. Since I started this campaign back in February, Iā€™ve only managed to raise less than 10% of the goal, and time keeps passing as we wait for any glimmer of hope. Now, I find myself unable to provide the treatment my father desperately needs.
My family and I have no choice but to turn to you. Without your donations, we simply cannot survive or stay afloat. You are our only hope in this crisis. Every donation, no matter how small, means so much to usā€”it means saving my fatherā€™s life and giving us hope for a better tomorrow. Without your support, we would not be able to withstand these challenges. donate what you're able to or 5$ AT LEAST to my gofundme or my paypal is also available and they accept any transfer amount. and i know you all afford to give away at least 1$ !
