EDIT:
I was told to just make this a hiatus notice.
So it is a hiatus notice.
I'll be back eventually, I'm sure.

So, not that it matters, since I’ve been gone for nearly a week anyway, here’s another away notice. Possibly a permanent one. I don’t know.
But with NaNoWriMo, college applications, and everything else, I won’t be able to be as active on this blog as it requires.
Well, anyway. Thanks for a good two-week run.

The volunteer sheet at the end of the hall had tons of people swarming around it. Cassie hovered near the edge of the group, hoping that they would clear out eventually. She wanted to get close enough to sign up--Lower Manhattan was a war zone, and while the National Guardsmen were doing a good job, the mayor had asked SHIELD to lend a helping hand (though anonymously, of course.)

Their departments certainly dealt with two very different things, but on this mission, the higher-ups had decided to pair them together. Not that Cassie minded--usually she was on her own for these sorts of things, with a back up crew behind her. It was nice to have another agent with her.
She turned and nodded to the other agent and made her way up the stairs, her gun held in front of her. She kept her footsteps as light and silent as possible, using the thick coating of dust to her advantage.
Cassie paused at the top of the third staircase, glancing back for Agent Stanton. "They should be in a room at the end of this hall," she whispered.

Were people ever ready to face the byproducts of downstairs? Cassie herself never felt quite completely ready, and perhaps she never will. “Better now than never,” she repeated, nodding, before taking a deep breath herself. She reached for the door handle then, yanking the heavy metal door away from its frame and slipping into the dark, musty corridor.
They’d studied blueprints of the building for a week and a half now, so Cassie felt like she knew where she was going. The demons were upstairs, in one big common room. Who knows what they would find up there—but the job had to be done, despite the unpleasant roll of anxiety that went through Cassie.
“First stairwell,” she whispered, glancing at Agent Stanton as they came up to it. It was dimly lit with weak autumn sunlight filtering through grimy windows, and it looked like it hadn’t seen the end of a custodian’s broom in forty years.

Cassie glanced at the agent standing beside her and hoped beyond all hopes that things would go alright. The building they were in front of was a dilapidated apartment house just outside of The Bronx—and inside was a group of demons who’d been showing some serious activity. In the last week alone, they had murdered, robbed from, and possessed dozens of people. It had to be dealt with, so SHIELD sent Cassie, and Agent Stanton.
“You ready?” she asked, glancing at the other woman. Cassie reached into the back of her jeans and pulled out her pistol, checking the cartridges again. There was a bottle of holy water strapped in her thigh holster and the exorcism scribbled on her forearm—just in case.

Cassie watched the electric kettle with a fixated eye, waiting for it to boil. The Unnaturals Division's little kitchenette was empty save for her, and she took this as an excellent opportunity to make some tea. She was buried up to her eyeballs in files and reports from her absence--it almost made her wish she hadn't gone to the mountains to track that Wendigo.
Someone stopped in the doorway, making her look up. "Oh!" she said, surprised, but smiling. "How are you? Haven't seen you in a while, stranger."

"...Right." She didn't know how Agent Morgan would react to that, of course. But whatever, if Romanoff didn't want her saying anything, then she won't. She didn't want to piss off the best assassin in the business. "You're welcome. Anytime. Tell me how it goes when you return."

Natasha flicks through the file as Cassie works, taking the proffered information with a nod of thanks. After absorbing what’s before her, she looks up at Cassie, free hand drifting to where her gun is holstered. “Well, if there’s one on offer, Agent…” She consults the front of the file. “Poole.”

Cassie put her feet up on her desk and reached for the bottle of Jack Daniel's. She clicked onto cnn.com and put on the debate, pouring herself a shot. "Alright, boys," she said to no one in particular, "let's get to debating."
