sometimes i just think about actually how freaking knowledgeable bucky is combat wise like … even pre war he was a boxing champion, during the war he was “an expert marksman” and killer and good enough at it that he rose to the rank of sergeant in under two years … and as WS he had so much experience using weaponry like guns and knives THROUGHOUT the decades. his hand to hand combat skills are arguably on par if not better than steve’s (+ he has a serum and a vibranium arm) like … even post WS times this man is so deadly if he wanted to be
#out of character.#as the soldier he was also just so brutally efficient of a killer#like there was no time wasted in kills they were almost always one shots#like this man knows how to Fight

TFATWS Stunts Previz: Bucky’s Nightmare Source: Dave Macomber (Fight & Stunt Coordinator)
Once upon a time, before earthquakes and natural disasters aborted production going to Puerto Rico, there was a version of Bucky’s Nightmare from episode 1 where The Winter Soldier was on his way to kill a target in a castle at the center of a coup attempt.

it can’t always be said of the jobs they do, even with the wide array of skills they’ve gathered, but this one’s gone off without a hitch. everything falling into place exactly where it was supposed to, rogers’ plans sliding into place like he’d forced them to by sheer will. it’s bad form to call something easy before it’s done, but they’re pulling ahead, running before the clock instead of behind it. they’ve just switched the comm to a private line as she turns a corner, tapping code into the device that’s eye level.
❛ alarm disabled. you’ve got twenty eight seconds to get to me, barnes, don’t get lazy. ❜ 13 … 14 … 15 … the door opens behind her, just enough to slip through and be met with teammate. it’s quiet as they make their way down the hall, everyone that isn’t bare bones occupied somewhere behind them, champagne and celebration and clueless as to what’s happening right under their noses. that’s where rogers’ll be, schmoozing and hating every minute of it. ❛ i noticed you and steve seem to be getting close, ❜ all the picture of casual innocence. ❛ something going on there ? ❜
following the disaster that was their last few jobs — an arsenal of wrenches thrown into their plans / his team members each taking turns having their lives flash before their eyes — this one has gone suspiciously smoothly so far. not that he has any reason to complain about it. by the time bucky’s cleaned the building of all of its security, his blood is singing in his veins, as if in anticipation of more foes that would not come. after relaying his status, all that was left for him to do was wait for nat’s signal before following the maze of hallways to her location; this he can say is easy, the act of putting his own life in her hands — it wouldn’t be the first nor last time.
his strides fall in sync beside hers, and momentarily all he can hear is the sound of their own boots against the shiny laminate flooring. he’s expecting to hear more footsteps or the click of guns, but it’s the question she poses that truly catches him off guard — only momentarily, of course, before his expression is schooled back into unreadability [ if there’s one person in the world who could decipher even the minute changes, though, it would be her ]. “i have no idea what you’re talking about,” and that statement actually rings a little bit true, just probably not in the way she meant it; him and steve are friends, sure, if friends kissed each other a few times and had no clue how to follow up on any of that. suddenly he’s very glad they’re currently on a private line. “shouldn’t we be focusing on the job, ‘talia?”
#heartborrow#interactions.#sometimes bad guys make the best good guys.#literally - & i can't stress this enough - mess

thinking about how bucky is a lot more careful nowadays with how he uses his body in a fight ❤️ as the soldier, as a weapon, there was never any thought to how he strained his body on a mission as long as he got the job done - and we see from civil war onwards he’s ( generally ) a lot more graceful with his movements and performs moves with less damage done to himself in the process ( eg. the way he lands onto the ground in the bucharest scene in cacw! ). that being said he still sucks at self preservation especially while a loved one is in danger, someone please patch him up and call him an idiot in a gentle tone of voice
#headcanon.#like there is a visible difference between him fighting as the soldier vs as bucky ( although there are parallels to be#drawn between both for sure )#and i just think thats neat

bucky’s single dad verse notes !
bucky & dot were college sweethearts that unfortunately didn’t last past college, they had split up before she realized she was pregnant. they decided to give it another shot & try to co-parent, platonically this time
their child’s name is rachel barnes, but often it’s just shortened to rach :)
work commitments & needing to take care of her aging parents two states away — what dot had been planning on doing after they split — often kept her at an arm’s length. when her brother suddenly passed away, she moved states to look after them full time in his stead, essentially ending their co-parenting situation

Okay but “presumed dead” is SUCH a good trope. The angst of a character thinking someone they love is dead? The relief and other complicated emotions upon finding out they’re alive? The possibility of the “dead” character having been intentionally kept away and not knowing they were presumed dead (and thus not knowing why their loved one is so freaked out seeing them again)? It’s all so good.

@intohero: sender wakes receiver from a nightmare.
there are some things he cannot hope to forget, even if he wanted to. once, hands were made to be gentler, kinder; but now they are stained with blood that can never be scrubbed off. painted on the backs of his eyelids is a picture so vivid it could be a memory: maybe it is, his movements feel too familiar & fluid even years later. it’s almost always the soldier that pervades these dreams, one track focus as he moves through the dead of night, though this time his victim is not the same as who he remembers it to be. when the blade of his knife sinks into flesh, what he sees is not his target / a politician decked out in suit and tie, pristine white button-down dyed dark red, but blond hair and familiar blue eyes that seem to stare into his soul.
it all comes back to him too fast; and when he jolts awake, he finds those same eyes staring back at him in the dark. his anchor, his home, his heart — “steve,” voice hoarse, but the relief is evident within. “i thought —” he starts, but lets the thought die before he can finish; doesn’t want to worry lover more than he probably already has. “are you okay? did i hurt you?”

@intohero: what was it like for bucky after the fall having to realize that steve wasn’t going to come rescue him? was it even a realization or did he hold out hope as long as possible?
bucky is in a significantly different position being captured as a pow after the fall versus azzano; during the latter no one was really batting an eye if they died, either from the serum experimentation or overwork, and so he was fully expecting to die in there — but after the fall was when he realized he was intentionally being kept alive. and that changed a lot of things, for him: it meant hyd.ra had plans, and it also meant he had a chance of breaking out of there himself ... that was always sort of in the back of his mind in the beginning [ though how far he would have gotten: probably not very far considering he was still dealing with the loss of a limb ]. it would have been a shot in the dark for the team to go and try to look for the body [ and it wouldn’t have been a far fetched assumption to assume there would Only be a body for them to find ], and even if they did manage to pinpoint the exact place where he fell it would’ve likely been after hy.dra found him. so in a way he was never expecting to get rescued per se, but he had held out hope that steve and the rest of the howlies would have found wherever he was being held eventually, and take the base down just like all the other ones they’d destroyed before … and then they would be one step closer to the war ending for good. and if he had stayed alive until then, maybe they would have found him. except obviously, that day never came, and hy.dra continued to thrive — especially after steve’s death. while he very much refused to believe steve had been killed / thought it was faked to break his spirit, it still worked on him, and the brainwashing / torture methods became more effective. so after steve’s death, it wasn’t so much a slow realization that he would not come to rescue bucky as much as it was his hope fizzling out slowly & he began to forget steve more and more.
