Brighid of the Poets
Restless with night scent I intend to run to him, let daybreak tug the drift of desire from the sky, fall on the sand, have,
be had. All I know is I want. Not to do, but to be undone. I run. Past your antlered image, through the fir grove,
juniper-stained, wild, making no obeisance to the fallen in their hushed graves, to the past, to the ashes of change.
I crave his bright scent. Your face is the early sun. I need. Everything. I run. You take both my hands. I hold still, panting.
You draw maps on my arms. Give me berry ink, a twig, paper sieved from bark in the slow-flowing river. I let your fingers
guide mine. Pull strips from my clothes, gently draw your branches down. You sweep the sweat from my brow. I drink
rapt from your well, slip into deeper thirst. I pour words on the river bank, wrapped in dawn songs, forever quietly aflame.

There’s a boy in the storm feathered like a flightless bird and he’s singing
We could’ve had something if you hadn’t kept going with strangers in the city where we both lived
We could’ve had something if you hadn’t kept running away with the circus
*
Feathered like a flightless bird he’s in the underworld looking for your toys singing
I have to warn you I have no soul or at least I never had one as tight-fisted as yours
He’s in the underworld looking for your toys and no warrior can rend the earth and save him.
