Significance of Ram Navami-

“SITA RAM SITA RAM SITA RAM KAHIYE

‘Rama Nawami’ is a major festival of the Hindus throughout the world. After Holi, that heralds the beginning of the festive season in India, the  ‘Chaitra- Navratri’ Hindu festival of nine days of fasting and penance, ending on the ninth day with Ram Navami as the concluding day.  It celebrates the birth of God Rama to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya, in Ayodhya, U.P. It has been there prominently in Hindu mythology that Lord Rama, considered as the seventh ‘Avatar of Vishnu’ by the Hindus is the oldest Avatars of Lord Vishnu, taking   a human form. This holy day falls on the ‘Shukla Paksha’ on Navami, the ninth day of the month of Chaitra,  as per  the Hindu calendar. Thus it is also known as ‘Chaitra Masa Suklapaksha Navami’, marking the end of the nine-day ‘Chaitra-Navaratri’ (Vasant Navratri). The other legend that is associated with this festival, is the story of prince Sudarsana, who won the battle against King Yudhajit , after performing ‘intense meditation’ or ‘Tapasya’, in turn being granted a ‘boon’ by Goddess Shakti . After his victory, Prince Sudarsana worshipped Devi –Durga  along with his wife and Father-in-law. As the Devi was pleased, she ordered them to perform a ‘Havan’ (Purification with fire ritual) , duly completed with all the puja rituals. Since then, this Navaratri is celebrated as Vasanta Navaratri. Sri Rama and Lakshmana,  being the descendants of King Sudarsana ,also performed a  ‘Havan’ during Vasanta Navaratri with due devotion ,  resulting in the  ‘Devi’ helping  them to locate and  recover ‘Sita-Maiya’ from the clutches of the super-demon  Ravana, thus starting the tradition of the Vasanta Navaratri or Chaitra Navratri.

Navaratri, the nine holy days of worshipping Shakti  ,revering the nine forms of ‘Durga –Shakti’ Navaratri is celebrated Four  times in a year i.e.’ Vasanta Navaratri,’ Ashad Navaratri, Sharad Navaratri and Magha Navaratri. Out of these four Navaratris, two are the most popular and significant i.e. Vasant Navaratri and Sharad Navratri, that are the most celebrated.
