Betsy DeVos has been confirmed by one vote as the Secretary of Education. Two Republican Senators voted against their party to protest DeVos
Today, the Senate narrowly confirmed Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education, with VP Mike Pence breaking a 50-50 tie. The Democrats fought hard against the wealthy GOP donor, staying up all night to read letters from constituents in an effort to eke out just one more vote, which was all that was needed from Republicans to block DeVos. And DeVos’s history of opposing LGBT equality for kids is just the tip of this disastrous iceberg.

The young men involved, Waad Ramadan Alwan and Mohanad Shareef Hammadi, had come to the U.S. in 2009 as part of a program for displaced Iraqis. Once settled in Kentucky, the men were solicited by undercover FBI agents to help them send money and weapons to militants back in Iraq.

President Barack Obama made it four months into his presidency before his first golf outing as commander-in-chief. George W. Bush made it even longer, first hitting the links as president about five-and-a-half months into his first term.
Donald Trump made it two weeks before heading to the golf course.
On his first vacation as president to his Mar-a-Lago Resort in Palm Beach, Florida, spent about eight hours at the Trump International Golf Club last Saturday and Sunday. And he will be taking his clubs out again for more golfing this weekend, as he is scheduled to play with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
A senior White House official declined to say who Trump spent time on the links with last weekend, after aides had declined over the weekend to provide details about the president’s outing to the course. He stayed at the club about the length of time it usually takes to play 18 holes. This person said Trump was looking forward to his round of golf with Abe this weekend.
Trips to the golf course have long been a presidential tradition, and it is no surprise that Trump, who regularly touts his ownership of golf courses around the world and his own golfing talents, would gamely carry it on. He even landed the cover of a special issue of Golf Digest with the title “Golfer in Chief.” And during the transition, Trump evaded reporters to sneak in a private round in Florida.

Paul Ryan Shrugs Off Donald Trump's Claim About The Media Downplaying Terrorist Attacks
function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){'undefined'!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if('object'==typeof commercial_video){var a='',o='m.fwsitesection='+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video['package']){var c='&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D'+commercial_video['package'];a+=c}e.setAttribute('vdb_params',a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById('vidible_1'),onPlayerReadyVidible);
WASHINGTON ― In case you strangely thought otherwise, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) is not going to call out President Donald Trump for his baseless attacks against the media, even if those outbursts involve claims that the media is covering up terrorist attacks.
On Monday, Trump asserted that terrorism in the United States and Europe is so out of control, “it’s gotten to a point where it’s not even being reported, and in many cases, the very, very dishonest press doesn’t want to report it.”
Fact-checking website PolitiFact rated that statement a “pants on fire” lie.
When Ryan was asked on Tuesday about the false claim that journalists are covering up major terrorist attacks and whether he was concerned with Trump’s “grasp of the truth,” the speaker almost seemed to lend credibility to Trump’s argument.
“Look: I’m going to do my job, I’ll let you guys do yours with respect to how you report or what you don’t report,” Ryan said.
“The problem is we do have a war on terror in front of us, we do have ISIS trying to conduct terrorist attacks across the globe,” he continued. “This is a real serious problem, and what I’m focused on is doing our job and making sure the law enforcement authorities, that our military, have the tools they need to keep us safe.”
But pressed whether it hurts U.S. credibility around the world when Trump makes false claims like this, Ryan again refused to cross Trump.
“I can’t speak to whether you’re over- or under-reporting something. That’s your job. I’ll stick with mine,” he said.
Ryan’s transformation from someone willing to call out Trump’s more egregious transgressions to some someone who is perfectly on board with the president hasn’t always been a straight line. The speaker has, on occasion, criticized Trump. He just isn’t going to stick his neck out there for a claim that the media is ignoring terrorist attacks.

(CNN) On Saturday morning, President Donald Trump may have unleashed his most bone-chilling tweet – at least to those who believe the United States should not become a Trump-led dictatorship. And I don’t make that comment simply to be provocative or without giving it a great deal of thought. Our democracy is far more fragile than some might grasp and Trump is engaging in a concerted effort to undermine the workings of it.
Here is Trump’s truly jaw-dropping tweet from Saturday morning: “The opinion of this so-called judge, which essentially takes law-enforcement away from our country, is ridiculous and will be overturned!”
Why is this so concerning? It’s OK to argue about whether the judge should or shouldn’t have issued this order. But Trump is apparently attempting to delegitimize our federal judiciary by calling Judge James Robart, a George W. Bush-appointed judge, a “so-called” judge while arguing that his decision is “ridiculous.”
Let’s be blunt, because the stakes demand it: An independent federal judiciary is our last, best hope at preventing Trump from violating the US Constitution and illegally grabbing power. And Trump has to understand that, hence his attempt to undermine it.
The President truly appears to be leading a master class in transforming the United States into a dictatorship. Trump – and it’s fair to assume it is by design – has sought to undermine anyone or anything that tries to counter him.  […]
