Group projects make up a significant part of the curriculum in all programmes in the School of Design.
The ten group projects by second-year Innovation Design Engineering students see them embracing complex and challenging real-world problems, with many focusing on questions of communication and language: CUE-scape, for instance, uses a Dictionary of Gestures as part of on-going research into non-verbal communication.

American Society for Cybernetics honours Prof Ranulph Glanville
Ranulph Glanville, Research Senior Tutor and Professor in Innovation Design Engineering was recently honoured by the American Society for Cybernetics, of which he is president,
The… award is made to Ranulph Glanville, President of the ASC, for his tremendous support of our organization. Ranulph has served on the ASC executive board for many years, including two full terms as president. Ranulph once wrote that he finds it more important to provide a playing field to others than it is for himself to play. This is the spirit in which he leads the ASC, consistently relegating himself to the role of supporting and enabling others, despite having more to say about cybernetics than most of us.
During Ranulph’s presidency, the ASC has more than doubled its membership, and the financial situation of the organization has improved considerably.
Under Ranulph’s leadership the ASC has also seen a strong series of conferences that strike difficult balances between welcoming funded academics as well as unfunded enthusiasts; and that strike a balance between accommodating conversational encounters, as well as rigorously peer-reviewed academic publications in recognized academic journals in our field.
At the same time, under RG's leadership the ASC has seen a variety of other projects and initiatives including a cybernetics competition and the restoration of the society's legal standing as a tax-exempt non-profit corporation and an overhaul of its constitution in close consultation with the membership.
Ranulph is a philosopher and teacher of design and cybernetics who in the presence of Aartje has become a strong advocate of action and acting. Aartje is an action-oriented practitioner who in the presence of Ranulph extends her practice into the domain of conversational philosophy.
Together, these two tokens of appreciation recognize Ranulph’s and Aartje’s mutual support of one another as well as their support of the ASC. The gesture of these sculptures reflects the mutually completing nature of their relationship.
