A influência do jornalismo na defesa da ciência

Atualmente, há um consenso geral entre estudiosos e defensores do método científico de que a pandemia expôs o problema que é a falta de crença na ciência. Com discursos antivacina dominando uma parte significativa de redes sociais e meios de comunicação não oficiais, a tarefa de defender a verdade e informações confiáveis foi assumida por veículos jornalísticos ao redor do mundo.

O papel social do jornalismo foi utilizado durante a pandemia de COVID-19 para combater desinformação, fake news e discursos que tentavam desacreditar descobertas feitas pela ciência. Os veículos de comunicação realizaram campanhas, entrevistaram especialistas, deram sugestões e dicas, e enfatizaram o impacto da pandemia diariamente desde o início de 2020.

Ainda assim, estamos observando o surgimento e crescimento de uma nova variante da doença - a variante Ômicron, atualmente vista como preocupante pela OMS - e uma quarta onda surpreende a Europa, mesmo com os países europeus entre os primeiros a vacinar grande parte de suas populações. O surgimento de uma nova variante pode ser atribuído a vacinação insuficiente, mas a nova onda de casos em países desenvolvidos onde vacinas estão disponíveis só pode ser atribuída à porção antivacina da população e à flexibilização das medidas de proteção após a vacinação.

Isso não é necessariamente um sinal de que o jornalismo falhou em seu papel de distribuir informações confiáveis ao público, e não significa que pessoas acreditam menos no jornalismo. Não há como saber se a credibilidade na ciência seria ainda menor sem a influência da mídia, portanto tudo que jornalistas podem fazer é tentar desempenhar seu papel da melhor forma possível.
