The Best Range Hoods on a Budget

GE and Broan own the majority of the range hood market. In addition to our picks, we closely considered a handful of other options from both companies.

GE’s Profile line has modern, clean design with a selection of stainless hoods that would look good in most kitchens. We liked the PVW7301 but ultimately decided that the Broan Elite was a better glass canopy hood option, as it is higher-powered. We considered the higher-end professional-style JV966DSS and chimney-style PV970NSS, but decided not to recommend any upgrade hoods in this guide. They are both well-powered hoods that get excellent owner reviews, though.

Café is GE’s new line of hoods that look better than the basic GE models. Their designs are modern and minimal and should look good in most kitchens. We considered recommending a few older Café models as a potential upgrade pick because they looked good and had positive reviews, but they were discontinued while we were working on this guide. We don’t know yet what the response to the newer models will be, but we do think they look even sharper than the last generation.

We considered other hoods from Broan’s Elite line, but found some models (like the RME5030SS and RM503004) to be a bit underpowered at 290 CFM.

Both Broan and GE have even higher-end lines, called Best and Monogram, respectively. Both are well-respected and make HVI-certified hoods with great suction. You can’t go wrong with an option from either line, though you just don’t need to spend this much money on a hood if all you care about is functionality and good-enough looks.

NuTone is a subsidiary of Broan that makes a line of budget-minded range hoods, generally around $500 and under. We didn’t find anything to recommend the NuTone hoods over Broan. They tend to be relatively low-powered, and light on features.

Air King has a wide selection of HVI-certified hoods that all seem pretty solid. They also have many Energy Star-certified options as well. We ultimately dismissed them because Air King hoods are a bit difficult to find widely available for sale online.

Pacific makes high-powered range hoods that are excellent for high-smoke cooking like stir-frying or searing, or for high-odor foods like fish. They aren’t widely available online, but some models are HVI-certified.

We didn’t find anything in particular to recommend or dismiss Whirlpool’s range hoods. The options we considered were mostly lower-powered, with 300 CFM of suction or less, barely hitting our minimum criteria. And some, like the WVU37UC6F or the WVW75UC0DS receive poor owner reviews.

Bosch’s only HVI-certified hood is the 300 series (30-inch, 36-inch). It comes with most of the bells and whistles, including a three-speed fan, built-in timer, heat sensor, and Energy Star certification. If you’re looking for an upgrade hood, this model receives very few owner reviews, but they’re all positive. However, we felt that at $1,000 this upgrade hood is a bit underpowered for the price, with only 300 CFM suction. But that is generally the trade-off for an Energy Star-certified hood.

KitchenAid makes decently reviewed upgrade hoods. The models we considered ranged from $1,000 to $1,600, and are well-powered and quiet. We didn’t find anything in particular that set the KitchenAid hoods apart from their counterparts, but if your designer or contractor recommends one, this brand should do the job nicely.

IKEA makes attractive 30- and 36-inch hoods in the most popular styles, including wall-mounted and under-cabinet designs. Some of its wall-mounted hoods are good, with decent fans (400 CFM) that have three speeds. The $50 Luftig may catch your eye, but its fan is weak and has only two speeds. Most important, none of the IKEA hoods we looked at are HVI-certified—one of our top criteria for a quality fan.

Costco also carries some good hoods, including our pick, the GE JVW5301. We didn’t consider the store’s options from Ancona, Valore, or NXR because they lack HVI certification. Some of the hoods Costco carries are also probably too powerful for most home cooks, like the Valore Plateau, which has a 600 CFM fan. If you are committed to buying a hood at Costco and the GE isn’t available, you probably can’t go wrong with a Valore Cascade (under-cabinet) or Ancona (both under-cabinet), which have strong fans and tend to be very, very affordable.

We looked at two newer hood brands, Z-Line and Cavaliere, which are widely available, even on Amazon (which is uncommon for appliances). Their hoods are powerful and inexpensive. The options we considered were in the $400 to $500 range, boasting around 600 CFM. Though this is a lot of bang for your buck, it’s probably overkill, and neither brand has HVI certification on its fans.

Best Over-the-Range Microwave 2020 | Reviews by Wirecutter

Whirlpool Corp. makes microwaves under the Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, and KitchenAid labels. Most of them are similar to the Whirlpool WMH31017, based on what we’ve seen of them in stores. We think you can expect similar performance across the board, so if you find one of the other models on sale, or you prefer the look or certain options, you’ll still be getting a good microwave.

We tested the GE JVM3160, which is the bottom-end microwave in that company’s OTR lineup. It’s a solid alternative to the Whirlpool WMH31017, with more express controls but less-even heating, and roughly equal lighting and fan-noise characteristics. It’s also one of the few models that’s still available in the classic Bisque finish. GE also makes a slightly larger and more expensive model, the JVM7195, which is otherwise similar to the JVM6175.

The Frigidaire FFMV1645T appears to be similar to the GE JVM3160, and it’s probably assembled in the same factory, but it has fewer express options and a white cooktop light that won’t work as a night-light.

The LG LVM1762ST has a lower average user rating than most of the other models we tested, which is a mark against it. It’s missing some express controls (though it does have an Add 30 Seconds button, and More or Less buttons to adjust the run time by 10 seconds). We found a dead spot in the center of the turntable, which is very uncommon and might make it frustrating to use.

We’d intended to test the Samsung ME16H702SE, but we couldn’t get our hands on one before the coronavirus pandemic closed down our office. Like many Samsung appliances, it’s usually one of the cheaper major-name OTR microwaves you can get. But it also has a lower average user rating than the rest.

The Magic Chef MCO165UW is usually the cheapest OTR microwave you can get, but it also has the lowest average user rating we’ve seen in the category. It doesn’t have a night-light setting, its only express control is a not-very-useful Add Minute option, and it has a dead spot in the center of the microwave.

Insignia (Best Buy’s store brand) has a few OTR models. We didn’t test any due to time constraints, but based on some research, we think the stainless-steel NS-OTR16SS9 model could be essentially the same low-end microwave as the Magic Chef. However, the black-stainless NS-OTR16BS8 appears to be a higher-quality model.

Most of the brands we’ve covered have higher-end models that we didn’t test—GE Profile models are a notable example. Some premium appliance brands have microwaves, too, often included as a toss-in with a larger kitchen-appliance package deal. Based on what we know about how microwaves are built, these are all built in the same few factories as the cheaper models, most likely around the same core components. So the main differences are in the aesthetics and control panels. Higher-end models might blend in better with a higher-end kitchen design, but don’t expect them to reheat your lasagna more evenly, and they may or may not last longer.

One notable higher-end model is the Whirlpool WML55011 (or any of the similar models made by Whirlpool Corp.), a low-profile OTR microwave. It’s a few inches shorter than anything else, fitting into spaces with lower-mounted cabinets. It’s tall enough to fit a cup roughly the size of a pint glass. It’s an expensive microwave, but it solves a unique problem.

Considering you will not be able to install a built-in microwave under a counter or like a drawer in island the premium is less than $500. Best Washer-Dryer Combo 2020 | Reviews by Wirecutter

Heated tumble-drying is not the only way to dry your clothes. Before you buy a combo, think about whether you could be comfortable with a compact washing machine and a great drying rack. You’ll save hundreds of dollars, and you probably won’t lose much time relative to a combo.

We dismissed our other compact, ventless, 120-volt finalists: The Haier HLC1700AXW, Midea USFC70DS12DSH, Summit SPWD2201SS, EdgeStar CWD1550S, and Magic Chef MCSCWD20W3 (again, the last three of which appear to be the same machine with a different label). We also dismissed the Deco DC4400CV, the convertible vented-ventless model (also sold under the Equator or Pinnacle brands). As Shanet warned, you may not be able to find replacement parts from these brands after a few years. They tend to have mediocre user ratings and limited availability compared with our pick, too.

The LG Signature LUWM101HWA costs nearly $2,900, by far the most expensive combo unit and much more expensive than almost any separate washer and dryer. But this 2.8-cubic-foot, ventless, 120-volt, 24-inch model has arguably the best specs of any washer-dryer combo: It uses a heat-pump rather than a condenser for its ventless drying, which speeds up the drying process a bit and saves some energy. The spin cycle can also crank at 1,600 RPM, the fastest we’ve ever heard of in any washer, which should also help cut down on drying times. The LG Signature is not a particularly popular product, but some owner reviews have trickled out. Reviewers who compare the LG Signature with other combo units seem happy that it works noticeably (though not dramatically) faster; reviewers who thought they’d be able to seamlessly replace separate washer and dryer units seem disappointed.

Kuper, the cleaning expert and RV-dweller, told us the Splendide WD2100XC might be your best choice if your home rolls or floats. We didn’t consider it for our main pick because it’s a vented model, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem in RVs or on boats. The marketing materials specifically note that the Splendide is built with “heavy-duty springs and shock absorbers” for RV travel.

LG used to make a full-size, ventless, 120-volt all-in-one combo, the WM3997HWA, but it’s now discontinued. It has a 4.3-cubic-foot drum, an accelerated wash cycle, and 700 decent user ratings, averaging four stars out of five. Our stance is that you should get a combo only if you have no other choice, and if you can fit a full-size model in your home, you can probably fit two compact models, which will let you do more laundry faster, and will probably be more reliable. But if you’re the exception to our assumption, and think that the WM3997HWA is your best bet, we think it’s probably an okay bet—it has a lot in common with the smaller WM3488HW.

Marathon Laundry (a startup founded by a former Apple software engineer) announced its first product, an all-in-one combo in January 2016 and began shipping some units in May 2017. Most of the press coverage and the company’s marketing materials focused on how smart the machine would be, but we were mostly interested because it’s a 240-volt model, so the dryer should’ve been relatively fast compared with other all-in-one models. But it’s hard to find much information on Marathon Laundry anymore. The company’s website is still up, and according to LinkedIn it still has some employees. It also does not list a phone number on its website and did not reply to an email from Wirecutter asking about its status. It doesn’t have any stock of its machines, so if you wanted to buy one, you’d have to wait for the next production run, and that date is not publicly available either. It’s hard to find reviews of how well the company’s product works, but this story from May 2018 is not favorable, detailing how the dryer barely functioned and the customer service was obstinate. Another comment on that page tells a similar story about the poor customer service.

Sanitizing Cycles and Other Ways to Kill Illness-causing Bugs

NOTE: NSF was interviewed for the following blog post on cleaning vs. sanitizing. While sanitization cycles are a tool to boost the cleanliness of your home, NSF’s testing of sanitization cycles does not presently include the COVID-19 or coronaviruses.

Anyone shopping for cleaning products that can kill bacteria, viruses and other illness-causing microorganisms these days might find the shelves bare of their favorite cleaning products, as coronavirus fears have led to ongoing hypervigilance about cleaning and sanitizing. So, if still can’t find a steady supply of antibacterial wipes, the good news is you may already have tools at your fingertips, including the sanitizing cycles on your clothes washer and dishwasher, to kill off many of the bugs that cause colds, flu and other illnesses.

Cleaning vs. Sanitization: What’s the Difference?

It’s important to understand the difference between cleaning and sanitization.

“It’s a misconception that if you’re using vinegar to clean, you’re sanitizing,” says Mindy Costello, a registered environmental health sanitarian and NSF’s consumer product certification specialist. “Cleaning is just removing the soil. In sanitizing, you’re killing the microorganisms (bacteria, viruses and fungi).” If you want to reduce your risk of getting sick, sanitizing is the way to go.

To sanitize your dishes or laundry, both of which can be fertile grounds for viruses and bacteria, the sanitizing cycles on your clothes washer and dishwasher are among your best options. NSF tests both types of appliances for their ability to sanitize. To earn the NSF mark, clothes washers must show that the sanitizing cycle removes 99.9% of microorganisms from laundry. Dishwashers must show a reduction of 99.999%. During testing, three common organisms – staphyloccus aureus, klebsiella pneumoniae, and pseudomonas aeruginosa – added to the loads of dishes or laundry. The level of bacteria is tested afterward. The water in dishwashers that earn the NSF mark for sanitization must reach 150 degrees Fahrenheit during the final rinse and stay at or above that temperature long enough to achieve the 99.999 % reduction.

Consumers who are wondering whether their appliances have been tested for their ability to sanitize should look for the NSF mark and specification that clothes washers have met NSF-P172. For dishwashers, the standard is NSF/ANSI 184. The testing does not include the appliances’ ability to kill coronavirus, Costello says.

On the Surface

While laundry (particularly damp laundry and that which has been worn by people who are ill) and dishes could harbor harmful germs and bugs, pay close attention to the surfaces of many of your appliances as well. Some of the more common breeding grounds, according to NSF, are:

Coffeemaker: NSF’s 2011 International Household Germ Study found yeast and mold present in 31% of households studied. In half of those, it was found in the coffee reservoir of the coffeemaker.

Refrigerator: Staphyloccus aureus (staph), a common and potentially harmful type of bacteria, was found in 6.4% of households. In 14% of those homes, it was found on the refrigerator handle.

Stove knobs: Staph was found on stove knobs in 5% of the homes where the bacteria was discovered.

The biggest misconception among the 22 families surveyed during NSF’s study was that the bathroom would be the dirtiest part of the house. In fact, it was the kitchen, with coliform bacteria –indicating possible fecal contamination—found on

So sanitize your laundry and dishes regularly, and pay close attention to laundry and dishes worn and used by people who are ill. Sanitize high-contact surfaces regularly, and do dishes as soon as possible, as bacteria begins to grow after about two hours on soiled dishes left at room temperature, Costello says. There are many kinds of sanitizing products on the market, including those the EPA says will kill coronavirus. To make your own sanitizing cleaner, Costello recommends adding a tablespoon of unscented bleach to a gallon of water.

Sponges and dishrags can be sanitized by heating them in the microwave for two minutes while they’re wet, Costello says.

Fear and anxiety about viruses are running high right now. While there’s no guarantee you won’t get sick, reducing harmful microorganisms in your home can reduce your chances and give you some peace of mind that you’re controlling what you can. Stay calm and keep sanitizing!

A Modern Upgrade for a Dated 1950s Kitchen

When we first met Jane in Jersey City, NJ, her kitchen was in major need of renovation. Although her charming, 116-year-old home had a lot of character, her kitchen hadn’t been updated since 1956. This meant that both aesthetically and functionally, it was time for a revamp. In addition to wanting a bigger space to entertain, Jane had her eye on the resale value of her house. But she faced one major dilemma – she had no idea where to start.

Life Before the Renovation

Before the renovation, Jane’s canary yellow countertops and wall oven screamed 1950s. The space also lacked functional features like a center island for extra space for entertaining and prepping food.

She knew she wanted to renovate her kitchen, but had to first figure out her budget and living arrangements during the project. Thankfully, because Jane was only renovating the kitchen, she wasn’t displaced during the project. However, she did find herself ordering out for dinner more often.

This is why we often recommend limiting a renovation project to one or two rooms at a time, so that the homeowner’s day-to-day life isn’t greatly affected by the construction.

After deciding that she was ok to stay in her home during the renovation, Jane had to set her budget. In terms of appliances, she knew she didn’t want to exceed her $35,000 budget.

For a full kitchen remodel, homeowners should typically budget about $40,000- $50,000 without factoring in appliances. Although this may sound like a big number, renovations greatly increase home resale value, making them a worthy investment down the line.

Getting Started

After speaking with several friends who had recently completed renovation projects of their own, Jane knew it was time to start compiling ideas and find a designer.

“I had no idea where to start actually,” Jane said. “I knew that I wanted to have really nice finishes in here, and so the first thing I started searching for was appliances.“

Most designers recommend choosing your appliances before doing anything else. This allows the designer to work around your favorite appliances, instead of having to settle on appliances simply because they fit into your space.

After looking through home magazines and scouring Pinterest for inspiration, Jane decided that she wanted an all-white kitchen with modern flair. She stopped by the Montclair showroom, and in addition to looking at appliances, took notes on things like countertops, cabinetry, and backsplash design. After explaining her needs for her kitchen, we were able to connect Jane with her contractor for the project, AD Home Improvements.

Functionally, Jane’s appliances were in desperate need of an upgrade. However, she had only a basic understanding of which appliances would work in the space. She had seen her friends’ Miele and Bosch appliances, and knew both companies offered the high-end features she was looking for.

One amenity Jane and her husband knew they wanted from the very beginning was a high-quality coffee maker. As coffee connoisseurs, they wanted to be able to skip the trip to their local coffee shop in the morning and enjoy a quality cup of their favorite drink from the comfort of their own home.

After taking a trip back to the Montclair showroom, Jane and her husband fell in love with Miele appliances. In fact, they loved Miele appliances so much that they outfitted their entire kitchen in Miele products, including: a Miele dishwasher, Combi Steam Oven, gas range, panel-ready french door refrigerator, dual zone wine refrigerator, and of course, the Miele coffee maker.

Breaking Ground on the Renovation

Armed lots of inspiration, Jane was finally able to break ground on her kitchen renovation project. But first – she needed to assemble her team.

In small remodels, customers often only need a cabinet maker and an appliance dealer to get the job. But because Jane and her husband decided to go with a full remodel, they needed the help of a contractor to tear down the walls and create the open concept kitchen they were looking for. Their contractor, AD Home Improvements, was then able to hire subcontractors to move the sink, dishwasher, and all relevant plumbing and electrical lines. But before the contractor could get to work, he had to obtain a permit to knock down the constricting walls that made the kitchen area seem so small.

Another important member of the team was Jane’s interior designer, who helped her to cover all aspects of the overall kitchen design. This included aesthetic choices like flooring and countertop type, a new backsplash, and the color of the walls.

Life After the Renovation

Overall, the entire renovation took about four months from start to finish, but Jane’s return on investment was high. After the renovation was complete, her home value increased 20%.

Because Jane and her husband love to entertain, many of the amenities they chose reflect their love for gatherings. For example, they’ve already made good use of their 36 inch Miele range, which allows them to cook big meals for guests with the extra large space. They also enjoy the champagne bucket, which sits to the right of their Franke sink.

But her favorite appliance of all? The Miele coffee maker she had so eagerly awaited before the renovation. “When I get up in the morning, it’s the very first thing that gets turned on in this house,” Jane said. “Even before a light.

Aside from the new appliances, the kitchen itself became much more functional and inviting after the remodel. Instead of a room meant purely for cooking, Jane’s kitchen became the life of the party.

When asked what advice she had for homeowners in the beginning of the renovation process, Jane stressed the value of extensive research and a strong and reliable team. She also highlighted the importance of thinking of the larger picture. That is, after you’ve decided to move on from your current home, a renovation and some new appliances can dramatically increase the resale value.
