teen!juno is gutter punk as hell but juno and ben wore the weirdest t shirts they could find in thrift stores when they were kids - like weird family reunion and bat mitzvah shirts that end up being 25 cents in a bin. they had a running competition of who could find the weirdest one. ben found a martian flag shirt with a raccoon on it when they were 17 that juno never could beat. juno and ben got lots of hand me downs from mick and juno still feels weird in shoes that fit right because of it

That absolutely sounds like something they would do, you’re so correct. As for the hand-me-downs from Mick? I am never gonna be able to unthink this, it’s such a great concept. I’ve always imagined Mick way taller and overall bigger than juno and ben, so can you imagine the two of them huddling together in one of Mick’s larger sweatshirts? Astounding.

GHH. I really wanna’ write one of those language trope fics, where Nureyev has a habit of muttering Brahmese phrases under his breath. Like, he has a much better handle on himself when he’s undercover, but on the ship he’ll sometimes slip up and say something in Brahmese instead of in Solar.

When Juno comes onboard it becomes a more purposeful act—a way for Nureyev to vent his true feelings without Juno knowing. In Solar he’ll be snippy and uptight, and in Brahmese he’ll mutter, I miss you, or Please don’t leave me again, or I wish we could fix this. One night after a particularly stupid argument with Juno, he leaves the ship’s dining area with a Brahmese “You’re lucky I love you.” He swears he hears a mug shatter as he turns the corner down the hall. 

Then one day Nureyev gets tossed around on a heist-gone-wrong. He wakes with a concussion and compulsive foreign language syndrome, or foreign accent syndrome (FAS). Every time he tries to speak he thinks he’s using Solar, but what comes out is Brahmese. Vespa tells him he’ll probably remember how to speak Solar within a couple weeks—but until then they’ll all have to hunker down and break out the translators. 

…Except of course one night early on, Juno sits Nureyev down and admits he’s been able to understand him this whole time. 

He’s good with verbal and visual learning, and as a detective he’s quick to pick up on patterns. After he got back from Miasma’s tomb, he was haunted by a word Nureyev used on their last night together; he got Rita to help him sort through an online dictionary, and then she downloaded a program onto his comms and he sort of…well. Started to memorize words and phrases. Mostly out of boredom (cases were so slow when he first got back) but also—and he would never admit this to himself at the time—because it made him feel a little closer to Nureyev. 

So by the time Juno left with Buddy’s gang he couldn’t speak Brahmese per se—not well, at least—but every time Nureyev said those things, he heard him, and he understood him.

Me: Penumbra makes a deliberate point of keeping Juno and Nureyev apart until Juno is capable of supporting himself, in the same way that Buddy and Vespa aren’t allowed to reunite until both have made the decision to move on with their lives and take care of themselves. Romance is never positioned as a magical healing tool; rather, the responsibility of getting better always rests on the shoulders of the ailing person. Penumbra rewards characters like Vespa and Juno for reaching out to their friends for help, but the narrative also expects them to pull their own weight and will hold them accountable for the mistakes they make during the healing process. Even though Juno is coming out of a very dark place, he is still expected to treat Rita with respect, and he is made to apologize whenever he steps out of line. These friend characters are never reduced to therapists, and they aren’t afraid to put their foot down when their friend is being stupid or acting like an asshole (think Jet dragging Buddy off the roof and forcing her to move on, and characters like Sasha, Mick and Rita calling Juno on his bullshit). All this culminates in a show that encourages self-betterment through a combination of one’s own efforts and friendships with solid boundaries, and condemns the kind of codependency media so often casts as romantic.

Peter doesn't have his own casual/comfy style. That would require him buying any of his own lounge/sleep wear. He steals and borrows clothes and goes from there.

I don’t count this as a headcanon because I 100% believe this is true. This is the truth.I also believe that Nureyev has stolen clothes from a museum that once upon a time belonged to Tan France but, he doesn’t french tuck because Peter Nureyev is a maniac.

i spend upwards of 40 hours a week thinking about teen punk juno steel. like, while acknowledging the fact he lived in extreme poverty, i just imagine him full out fishnets, leather jackets, old ratty t-shirts he cropped himself (very uneven), dark makeup. he was def in a band with mick and sasha. (sasha on guitar/bass, juno on drums, and mick on keys, all of them on vocals sons of an illustrious father style) i needed to get this off my chest thank you for your time.

Honestly, since tpp happens in the future it’s entirely plausible that those kinds of clothes are what is cheap, so, canon. Also, I need you to know that as soon as I read that- them being in a band together -I had such a strong reaction. They were DEFINITELY in a band oh my.
