Different Thought Disorders Common With Those On The Schizophrenia Spectrum / Psychosis Spectrum
Thought disorders are when your thinking process is impaired, often affecting your speech! Theyâre common in ADHD and autism, but also can appear in those in the schizophrenia spectrum or psychosis spectrum. Letâs talk about them!
Remember, none of these are done on purpose!
Alogia - randomly stop talking in the middle of the sentence, slurred consonants, being unable to grasp the right word, and trailing off into a whisper before ending the sentence
Blocking - suddenly stopping in the middle of the sentence, forgetting what the sentence was about, and then starting a new topic after the blocking
Clang Association - Rhyming or doing alliterations in the middle of the sentence. An example would be âSo yesterday when I went to the store door floor more ⌠I mean, yesterday say lay may..â
Echolalia - Repeating what someone says right after they say it or repeating sentences heard earlier. An example would be a mom asking âDo you want icecreamâ and a child responding âDo you want icecreamâŚ. yes!â
Pressure of Speech - speaking rapidly without pausing, loud, and hard to understand
Word Salad - Using a series of words in an odd order making it impossible to understand the sentence, some of the words not having ti do with the sentense at all. An example would be a woman asking âWhat kind of coffee did you get?â and her friend responding âSeveral, several berries. Strawberries. Steaming, colours, fruits, red blue pinkâ
(word salad is often confused for manipulative behaviour, please know that nobody displays word salad on purpose. It is not manipulative. )
Tangentiality - going off topic before answering the question. An example would be, your friend asks âwhen did you start gardening?â and you reply âMy garden has three main vegetables. I love vegetables but my brothers donât. I havenât seen my brothers in years, I should call them.â
Stilted Speech - spoken in a formal essay format rather than casual speech, more information than average when explaining, repeating information
(also common in autism spectrum disorder, if youâre on the spectrum you may find yourself doing this more while info-dumping about a special interest)
If I happened to miss any! Feel free to add on!

Agreed. Because of this very stereotype Iâve even had a therapist say IÂ âdidnât act like autistic people heâs metâ (I talk a lot and show a lot of emotion when I talk etc). Which is insane, since Iâm diagnosed by a medical professional. The series Atypical is the same caricature of an autistic person who apparently havenât been told a single idiom in his entire life, and portrays autistic people as unable to learn even the most basic conventions of human speech and interaction.Â
idk if youâve heard about this (or watched it) but after watching the first episode of the new netflix show âatypicalâ i had a lot to say⌠autism and autism awareness is so important but how can we ever hope to break the stigma around it if the media keeps showing these stereotyped, one-dimensional, inaccurate versions of autistic people..?

Hogwarts Houses as Planets
for @chewbaccastolemyhearts
Gryffindor: Jupiter- large and extremely turbulent, holds many in its orbit
Slytherin: Venus- very harrowing, intense, and lethal
Ravenclaw: Uranus- not fully understood, chaotic, totally unique
Hufflepuff: Earth- the most stable, supportive, and well balanced

We might have misunderstood Hogwarts Houses for years
I have a theory that the valued quality of each of the four Houses isnât really about the personality of its students.
The valued quality of each of the four Houses has to do with how they perceive magic.
Stick with me a second: Hogwarts is a school to study magic. Magic as Hogwarts teaches it can be seen as many things: a natural talent, a gift, a weapon, etc.
So how you believe magic should be used will both reflect your personality and change how you handle that power.
âTheir daring, nerve, and chivalry set Gryffindors apart,â Gryffindors perceive magic as a weapon. Gryffindors tend to excel in aggressive forms of magic, like offensive and defensive spells, and they are good at dueling. But a true Gryffindor knows that the power is a responsibility, and so they must always use their powers to stand up for whatâs right. They are the sword of the righteous, which makes them as good at Defense Against the Dark Arts as they are at combat magic.
Hufflepuffs believe that magic is a gift and that the best gifts are to be given away. Hufflepuffs, âloyal and just,â would naturally abhor the idea of jealously guarding magic or using it to hurt someone else. So Hufflepuffs share their magic to benefit of Muggles, like the Fat Friar, to protect the overlooked, like Newt Scamander with his creatures, or to oppose those who would use magic to torment and bully, like the Hufflepuffs who stood with the DA and the battle of Hogwarts.
Slytherins are the opposite: they believe their magic is a treasure that they have been entrusted to protect. The Slytherin fascination with purity, with advantage, with cunning and secrecyâall of which were perverted by the Death Eatersâcomes from the idea that people with magic in their veins have been given something special that it is their duty to protect at all costs. And perhaps they arenât entirely wrong: power in the wrong hands can be dangerous. And power interfering at will with Muggle affairs is a gross presumption that could turn the course of history. Though the series shows some of the worst that Slytherin can be, âevil,â is not a natural Slytherin tendency. âCautious,â is.
Ravenclaws believe that magic is an art form, one that is beautiful and should be appreciated and studied for its own sake. If âwit beyond measure is manâs greatest treasure,â then asking what magic is for is useless. Itâs more important to immerse oneself in magic for its own sake. Ravenclaws push the boundaries of magic to see if they can, hence Hermioneâs spell experiment on the DA coins being dubbed a Ravenclaw quality, but like Luna Lovegood in the pursuit of extraordinary creatures: they can also be content to plumb the depths of what already exists.
So while you can see where personalities will overlap over Houses, perhaps in Sorting we should be asking ourselves less what we think we are and more what we think we believe.Â
