MIS application in Ola.
Ola cabs have their own tracking management system using the GPS receiver in  smartphones and many other APIs provided by google.
Recently they have installed tracking devices in some of their vehicles.
A GPS tracker can range from anywhere between Rs. 1500/- to Rs 15000/- according to your requirement and the additional features.
Although there are many small scale manufacturers as well as companies which will import the trackers and integrate them with their solution, Autocop India manufactures them here in India and at a pretty large scale.
GPS trackers are available for import, from China - for about 5000 Rs.
These trackers have a SIM card slot. The trackers can periodically send SMS with GPS information to a pre-configured mobile phone. This way your vehicle is always trackable! Other than SMS, these devices also support GPRS connection - so that fleet manager can have a âALWAYS ONâ link with the vehicle. Few trackers even support geo fencing - that is to alert the owner, if the car crosses certain geographical boundary.
These GPS trackers come with SDKs to develop softwares on top of trackers - but these are usually running on Windows.
Many companies are now providing fleet management services in india now. Just as a side note, Tata - Indiaâs premier truck manufacturer has just started FLEETMAN - fleet management service for their trucks. This is very very economical - at 4000 Rs per year, per vehicle.
Olacabs is using the android technology in a magnificent way to do what Meru cab is doing for 60,000 INR. All the cabs are installed with an android based mobile. Olacabs have developed an android based mobile application which uses inbuilt GPS technology to report the distance traveled and deviceâs clock for waiting time. Once you have the distance traveled, you can calculate the approximate amount by simple calculations (INR 18*distance traveled). Thus once a journey is complete the mobile application send the information to a server which in turn stores the information of total amount. Also they offer Ola app on android, BB and iOS which works on the similar lines. There are many such apps available on play store which gives you distance traveled and speed (For eg: Sygic, Speedtest etc)
On the other hand Meru, Easy Cabs are using a GPS based device (not android) for tracking system. The complete package offers credit card acceptance, speed checker high demand areas etc. And the approximate cost of the same is around 60,000 INR.
Its s huge market because everybody is using more vehicles now a days. either personal or commercial. And they to track them for better security, connectivity and productivity.
There are a ton of GPS Vehicle Tracking Companies in India, one of them is Asset Tracker Bangalore. Which provides 99.99 % accurate location of your commercial as well as personal vehicle in all over India.
Companies like DTDC & BigBasket automate their billing and payment of leased vehicles by using Olaâs accurate GPS Tracking Solution.
Ola Cabsâ solution leverages cost effective, off the shelf hardware. However it has some limitations
It relies on GPS for calculation of Fare.
The GPS and the Vehicle odometer donât give the same reading. This is because, GPS essentially gives co-ordinates every few seconds and a formula is used to calculate the distance between successive points. i.e, it assumes that the vehicle traveled in a straight line between two successive readings. You can take GPS readings more frequnetly but then, GPS accuracy is around 5~10 meters, so if you take readings at a high frequency like every 1 second, the % error is large since actual distance travelled in that short interval of time is small.
Chipset/Module manufacturers specify GPS accuracy as a Probability Distribution Function. Basically, when the marketing material says 5 meters accuracy, it usually means 5 meters accuracy for 95% of the readings taken under good signal conditions. Nothing can be said about remaining 5% readings under good signal or 100% of the readings in bad signal conditions. Due to this, sometimes the readings have a large error (in 100s of meters or even more than a kilometer). The error can quickly build up if the GPS fix keeps âjumpingâ like this every few seconds. There are some parameters like Dilution of Precision & SNR that can be used to asses accuracy (android does it internally and provides a nice api too) but even these are not always reliable.
GPS readings are not stable: Â Even if the vehicle is stationary successive readings may be off by a few meters or more. This makes it difficult to accurately identify when waiting period should be started.
Most of the time, the error is small. But strictly speaking fare calculation should not be left to probability.
Govt. norms mandate use of certified meters for rickshaws & taxis. I donât know whether Govt. considers it a taxi service or a car rental service or something else. Maybe they donât have to follow that mandate. But Meru, Tab Cab, Arya Cabs etc. are all using a clunky digital meter even though they  have expensive GPS hardware with LCD screen.
GPS trackers with no display can be very cheap. The cheapest ones are very unreliable. You would spend more on servicing them than you would save upfront. Standard ones come for 9 to 12K. With these you can sense engine status, fuel level etc. Those with LCD and a full blown OS like Windows CE/Windows Embedded or Android can be as expensive as 700-800 EUR. They come with options like Magnetic Card Reader, Compact Printer, etc. These are rugged computers designed for automotive use. They also have additional IO capability. For example, you may take the odometer input and use that for distance calculation instead of relying on GPS alone.
