A Brief History of LA's "Witch House"
Among the properties on Beverly Hillsides' North Walden Drive is nothing like the others. Using its steeply angled roofing, askew shutters, rickety picket fence, and moat, the Spadena House--or, as some call it, the "Witch House"--looks more like it belongs on the set of a fairytale film than on a street in Los Angeles. And, in fact, that's exactly where 516 N. Walden Drive was at first built: For the great deal of Willat Studio room in Culver City.
The home was created by Oscar-nominated artwork director Harry Oliver in 1921. The owners of the studio, Carl and Irvin Willat, instructed him to build a structure that may house the studio's office space and dressing rooms and dual as a set to save lots of money. According to the Culver City Historical Society, Oliver began learning the structures of bungalows in the old British countryside and "developed the thought of an 'British cottage dream' structures." Though it searched "tumbled down," the Los Angeles Express assured its viewers that the studio's office buildings were "equipped with the most modern appurtenances."
