Shout Out - Next Fab
It’s time to give some props to an awesome maker-space-fab-lab which has been, is, and will be crucial to NAPA’s projects.
Next Fab in Philadelphia
Some of the first pieces and elements of Blue Hour were built at Next Fab. We recently upgraded the tech and took Blue Hour to Light City Baltimore, and it was amazing.

Furthermore,
NAPA has been doing some engineering and design for internationally renown public artist Candy Chang. Next Fab has been instrumental, with it’s suite of CnC machines and techs, in the fabrication of interactive interfaces for Candy’s next big project. We wish we could say more about it, but it’s kind of a surprise.  You’ll just have to read into this collage of images from the proposals and tech docs over one of the pieces being cut out on the Next Fab shop bot.

Updates on this soon!
Wait there’s more :
NAPA is working on a National Endowment of the Arts grant with Coopers Ferry Partnership to bring a new site specific interactive installation to Camden NJ, called Our·Self.
Our·Self is a site specific, responsive artwork that captures the positive inner voices of a local population, and shares them with the public. Personal interviews with local residents from all walks of life, around the theme of motivation and personal ambition, are replayed in small focused clips to the public participants of the responsive piece. The space in which these audio clips are presented is between two large mirrors. This infinite space is thus filled with images of the participant, symbolizing the many voices of the community that define our community and ourselves.
This project will use just about every tool Next Fab has to offer, from Solidworks to the water jet, and we are stoked!

Maker spaces and fabrication studios are an integral part to creating the interactive work we do, and we at New American Public Art feel Next Fab is one of the best around.
Cheers, NAPA

Light City Baltimore opens tonight, March 28th! Stroll out to Constellation Pier to see Blue Hour.
Blue Hour is a responsive installation that changes due to activity around it. High activity produces gradients of blue to red light. Low activity reveals a ‘shy robot’ personality which blinks in morse code about its interaction history. These states can be activated by the motion of walking around the installation, or by patiently sitting still.
The work is named after the blue hour of the morning and evening, when the sun is below the horizon, the indirect light is blue, and first/last reds and yellows of the sun are visible. This installation explores ideas of transitions in motion, time, and place. How does the personality of a place change with activity, and how does that change how one feels about it? How does this inform the use of the place?
