The Unreachable Gates
“Open the gates.
And when you stand before me,
I shall give you designs
That shall rival the greatness of heaven.
I will make you the First among the new gods,
And you will build a paradise on earth.”
-Silence 1:12

dear johns, as an aspiring young music creator-guy, i was wondering how the songwriting process went for you two. love, jude
JF: this is a lifelong pursuit for us so it could take me a month to explain all the strategies.
Real quick-John Lennon’s advice is once you have an initial idea for a song go as long as you can at that exact moment to try to finish it. Even if you can’t wrap it up, in that moment you might have more access to those ideas than you might later.
My art school drawing class taught me to be start more things than I intend to finish-so sit in a quiet place where people can’t hear you with some kind of time and a sound recording device and just give yourself a quick time limit. 5 minutes. 10. 15. 30. Just bash out a tune. Then start again. The third one will be better than the first I guarantee, and the fifth might be great.
Art school also taught me to “be rigorous with the materials” which is a academic way of saying don’t be precious. Don’t be afraid to be radical moving things around, and simply throw stuff away. Remember that nothing is so great that editing can’t help it. You don’t have to hold on to the first thing that sparked the song. You can move a tune to a new lyric, and visa versa. Play it slow, or fast, or play it in ¾. Sing it loud, or in a key that is lower or higher than you normally sing. Get used to quickly moving through as large a series of these kinds of options as you can, and you’ll be surprise how quickly things move forward in a positive direction.
Even if you only think you know how to write “one ind of song” try to write in other styles, feels, rhythms. Write an instrumental, or a ballad, or a barn-burning rocker.
I could go on, but I gotta write this set list.

Just so everyone is aware, this concept is literally one of They Might Be Giants’ album covers. They even improved it by making the hearse hot pink.
