You can call me Bat. Queer, boricua, lesbian of color, in my late 20s, neuroatypical, chronically ill. Witch and eclectic polytheist, oathed to Loki. This is a sideblog, with a focus on deathwork, spirit work, Norse and Slavic polytheism, green witchcraft, divination, pop culture witchcraft, and anything else that catches my attention. TWERFs, white supremacists, and fascists fuck off.

why are bats called bats?
because they look like flying mice [Danish: flagermus, German: Fledermaus, Luxembourgish: Fliedermaus, Swedish: fladdermus]
because they look like half mice and half owl [French: chauve-souris]
because they look like half mice and it’s not 100% clear what the other half is [Ladin: utschè-mezmieur, Catalan: rat-penat, Lombard: mezzarat]
because apparently they make a flap flap noise [English: bat]
because they’ve got badass leather wings [Gaelic: sciathàn leathair, Old Norse: leðrblaka]
because they look like cute nocturnal butterflies [Maltese: farflett il-lejl]
because they’re probably, like, blind mice [Serbo-croatian: sismis, Portugese: morcego, Spanish: murcíelago, Arabic: khaffash]
because they fly at night [Italian: pipistrello, Slovenian: netopir, Polish: nietoperz, Greek: nykterides, Farsi: shab parreh]
Tumblr media
So bat literally means flapper. You’re welcome.

I'm just gonna reblog this from myself. I'm upset about that bullshit Wild Hunt article that references Loki's importance to marginalized devotees... then proceeds to claim it's more historical to equate Loki with one of the worst oppressors of our day. Reminder that THIS is what Loki is for me, and what he's helped me with, and that for me, he stands opposite to the extremes of unbalanced order, fascism, and state violence.
I call to you, Loki, protector of the outcast, and needler of the comfortable: help me find the courage to speak out against the violences I see. Help me cut the seal of fear from my lips.
Loki, crosser of borders, straddler of lines: help me shed the shielded skin of privilege from my form. For an instant, expose me raw and raging underneath.
Loki, of sly smile, and weary eyes: help me bear any punishment that comes to pass. It is a cost that only proves the necessity.
Loki, liesmith beloved, who speaks truths others fear: help me speak, even through my fear.
Here’s the little prayer I wrote a few days ago to Loki (my first one ever!) about speaking out against oppression. (He helped me file an official complaint against my violent, racist boss.) Reblogs and personal use OK if anyone wants to, though be aware it references being a conditionally white-passing PoC, so it may not be relevant for everyone without modifications.

Thank you so, so much for your replies, @loptrcoptr, @sinni-ok-sessi, and @thorraborinn! I'm going to ponder all this when I wake up a bit more, I appreciate it. @loptrcoptr please give the doggie lots of good pettings, and I look forward to reading more thoughts from you. And yep, I think a heiti is more what I'm going for, some kind of compound noun as you said, but I'm open to looking at lots of different options. Just struggling with grammar. Thank you again!
Help me, Old Norse grammar side of Tumblr, you’re my only hope!
I wanna make and use a kenning that vaguely indicates a gender-neutral form of like… Loki’s Beloved. But grammar is kicking my ass, and I’m too much of a nerd to disregard it.
I was thinking Loptást, for Lopt’s Love, but I’m stumped. Would it be…
Loptást
Loptrást?
According to the below document would it be… Lossást? ?? Or Loptsást?
Tumblr media
I’m going with Lopt at all primarily because I have no idea how to work with “Loka” and a word starting with a. Like, yeah, it’s Lokasenna, but surely it’s not Lokaást. Lokást? Would it even be “ást” if it was a specific beloved, or would it be like… -ástina? Definite accusative? Is that what that means or…?
… Lokitastic?

The good thing about life is that everything I’ve ever lost, it’s been replaced with something bigger and better. I never lack, I just transition.

A spread with questions I often ask myself when I’ve gone too far out. Great for those nights where you question existence. You don’t have to do each card in order, do it as you please!

Offerings for the Dead
Most people are reblogging an ask I answered long ago about offerings to give to the dead. It’s long overdue, but I’ve finally typed it up into an actual cohesive post.
~ Herbs ~
Lavender, for peace in passing on
Thyme, to give peace to those who have died from violence
Apple, a common Irish symbol for the dead, which I often give to my ancestors
Pomegranates, myth of Persephone and all that
Rosemary, for remembrance
Myrrh, commonly used in necromancy, also used to give off good vibes
Chervil, often used in rituals for the dead
Mugwort, usually used to aid divination and communication with the dead. I also give it as an offering
Bay, same as mugwort (my mentality is that these herbs will help “send” the offerings to the dead)
Lemonbalm, for peace and healing
Wormwood, to strengthen the communication with the dead, as well as healing and revenge
Frankincense, a traditional herb (usually incense) to honor the dead
~ Flowers ~
Calendula, for blessings and eternal love
Rose petals (or the flower) for love and healing
Marigolds, perfect for ancestor worship (as well as spirit work salves and tea)
Lilies, for a sense of security and togetherness; ideal for children
Orchids, for balanced emotions and adoration; ideal for former lovers
Daisies, also ideal for former lovers and lost family members
Tulips, to spread happiness
Dandelions, ideal for connecting with certain spirits (especially when drunk as a tea)
~ Liquids ~
Water, a traditional offering for the dead, often left out for passing spirits
Wine or other alcohol
Juice, namely pomegranate or beet
Oils, such as olive oil, pomegranate oil, coconut, almond, vinegar
~ Other ~
Stones or crystals
Coins
Tobacco (I also know some people who use cigarette smoke or ashes)
Grains, traditionally brown bread
Meat
Candles, namely dark colored or earth-toned
Cleaning up graveyards, placing offerings on graves and speaking to them also makes a great offering
Song and music
Anything personal to the person you’re sending the offering to
~ What to do with the Offerings ~
Burn herbs or flowers (safely) with a written message to “send” the offering to the soul
Leave coins, flowers or herbs on the grave
Pour liquid into the earth, or leave them out in a bowl
Leave offerings out as a “standing offering” for the dead who pass through (idea from @arachnospooky)
This is SO overdue I’m so sorry but I hope it helps!!

Step over ants. Put worms back in the grass. Rescue baby caterpillars. Release spiders back into your garden. Open a window for a bee to fly home. They are all little souls that deserve a life too.
