Richard Mosse: The Impossible Image

Here’s my attempt to present my understanding of Surrealism. Hope you like it?

SUBMISSION:

Extension (Groom) is a video work in which I (the artist) attempt to french braid a white pony’s tail while wearing four-inch-long red finger nails. The performance explores an impossible and nonsensical act while clashing childhood and adulthood feminine ideals. Zoomed in to only show the hands and nails struggling to tame the white horse hair, the work focuses on the sculptural, visceral, and ambiguous qualities of the performance. The elements of the video - hands, nails, tail, horse ass - assert themselves as symbols of girl/womanhood in one moment and then dissolve into nonfunctioning and useless antisymbols the next.
