Unforgotten Series 4 & 5 - killing off the lead and successfully bringing in a new partner for ‘Sunny’ was a triumph of good writing and direction.
“More than 8.5 million people have now watched this series, making it ITV’s highest rated show of 2023 so far. Treat yourself to two takeaway coffees, Sunny.

Delighted to work on Series 4 of The Crown. '48:1' is the episode where the Queen and Thatcher fight over Commonwealth sanctions on South Africa to oppose Apartheid. Wonderful production and cracking script and direction. Leftbank pictures are amazing to work for.

Black Mirror - ‘Hang the DJ’ nominated for BAFTA - Best Single Drama
well the Guardian tip us to win (but its sci-fi so no chance...)
“Charlie Brooker’s fantasy (chilling and clever, even for Black Mirror) of a state-run dating system of time-limited relationships. Another photo-finish but Hang the DJ feels the worthy victor.”

The City and The City TX
youtube
Great reception for the Neo-Noir - which I cut as well as delivered 250 vfx for;
““What’s this brown stuff?” asked Borlú, spotting some deposits on the corpse. “That’s brown stuff,” said a dim-witted colleague. In The City and the City there’s brown stuff, with grey and black mixed in. And it’s all good.“
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/2018/04/06/city-citythis-gritty-fantasy-procedural-perfect-fit-david-morrissey/
“Intriguing and highly imaginative”
https://www.spectator.co.uk/2018/04/portentous-po-faced-but-also-highly-imaginative-the-city-the-city-reviewed/
“The new BBC thriler is smart without crowing about it and satisfyingly humorous”
https://www.standard.co.uk/stayingin/tvfilm/the-city-and-the-city-review-a-clever-take-on-the-crimeshow-genre-that-has-echoes-of-past-hollywood-a3807961.html
““Nobody loves Breach,” says Borlú, “but before Breach, there was only blood.”
Language like that, and ideas like the one this story is based on, demand that an audience sit up and lean in. They’re the drops of brain-quenching water in a TV desert where we’ve seen it all done before. Combining their strangeness with such recognisable patterns is a clever move.”

The City & The City
youtube
Based on the multi award-winning novel by China Miéville, this was understandably deemed “unfilmable”, but the four-part drama series about two cities that occupy the same space has been brilliantly realised as a Film Noir by director Tom Shankland for BBC Two. The book has been adapted for screen by Tony Grisoni (Fear and Loathing in Las Veas/Tideland/The Man Who Killied Don Quixoti) with a heartfelt hard-boiled turn from David Morrissey (The Walking Dead) as Inspector Tyador Borlú.

Killing off a national treasure...
George Gently - BBC1 - Last ever episode
BANNED BY THE BBC DURING THE SNAP ELECTION FOR BEING TOO POLITICAL:
http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2017-05-27/why-is-the-final-inspector-george-gently-episode-not-airing-this-sunday/
A proper end to a long running series gained great reviews:
"Supremely atmospheric... a sad but entirely worthy close to a series..." - The Telegraph - FOUR STARS
http://tinyurl.com/GentlyTelegraph
This scene, done in grey bleakness, even moved an old curmudgeon like me.
The Times - FOUR STARS
http://tinyurl.com/GentlyTimes
"Shaw gave a towering performance that provided a fitting climax to the 24 episodes that comprise Peter Flannery’s portrait of 1960s Geordieland. The froideur that had lately developed between him and his sidekick Bacchus was subtly resolved in Robert Murphy’s script that highlighted the social aspiration that new towns represented – even if the trees were all the same height. Director Bryn Higgins has a fine eye for the North East’s industrial and architectural heritage, and ensured the characters appeared as real people rather than regional stereotypes. "

Taboo - episode 6
Enjoyed a wild time cutting this show for BBC1/FX when it’s aspirations were BBC2 - wonderfully Taboo no matter how censored they made it...
“Taboo recap: season one, episode six – Tom Hardy's horror show gets ever wilderHe rips out hearts, he tears out tongues – and he may yet murder his one true love. This was not an episode for the faint-hearted”
