To trans youth in the USA (or anyone else who feels helpless)
First of all, I see you, and I love you, and I'm glad you're here.
Secondly, you are not as helpless as you think! (Source: I'm a 24 year old trans person who was 16 when Trump was elected the first time)
I know a lot of you feel there's nothing you can do because you can't vote, or you may live with people or in areas that are red. But this IS NOT TRUE! I am about to give you the most important piece of advice I can possibly think to give you
Read.
I am so incredibly serious. I want you to hoard information and books and knowledge like a dragon. I want you to read every book you can get your hands on. I want you to collect books, real physical books, if you can. I want you to save articles and information as PDFs on physical flash drives or hard drives. Not the cloud, not google drive, hard files.
Pay attention in your classes! Pay attention in history, in math, in English, in science, even if it's hard or boring (I never passed a math class in my LIFE until I went to college). And I want you to fact check everything you learn, not just with a google search, but with physical books and documents if you can. Get a library card, get to know your librarians, learn your history.
THINK CRITICALLY!!!!! The curtains are never just blue, I'm going to need you to really really think and pay attention. Learn how to observe, learn how to listen, learn how to stop and really examine an idea before you subscribe to it. The enemy of fascist ideology is knowledge, is thought. Do not let them take that from you.
Read books by black women, by trans people, by people of color, by disabled people, by indigenous people. I want you to be hungry for knowledge, I want you to thirst for ideas and information. And I want you to preserve those stories and those voices. I need you to learn and remember. I want you to learn about foraging, about history, about art, about revolution, about medicine and law. Save recipes and medical records. Learn about governments, learn about human history, learn about artists and poets and public speakers. Learn about people who are and are not like you, learn about your history and the history of others around you.
Get connected with one another, make zines and exchange information. The days of inter-community conflict are OVER, it's go time. Your most important job right now is to learn and to read and to keep your eyes open. Look out for one another, keep asking questions, keep creating and being open to new ideas.
The most punk thing you can be right now is a fucking librarian. Start reading!!!! Keep hard copies, hand write things, keep flash drives, keep books, hoard the history they would strip from you. They can't take away your brains, use them to their fullest potential no matter how hard they try to stop you.
Invest in your ability to think, it's going to save your life

gen z has to reckon with its radicalization problem. you are not a morally pure and superior generation of youth come to save the world, your men and boys are radicalized at an unprecedented level and you ignore it because it’s too hard to address but you have to. these boys are in your classes, they date your friends, you know them and you cannot continue to pretend this is an “old white guy” problem

something about most of the americans who post about the 'shitty educational system making them think there are no cities in mexico' or something is that, on a deep level, they enjoy & revel in their ignorance, their incuriosity. they share the same bombastic and self-congratulatory anti-intellectualism as any trump-voting uncle, except enjoy couching it in the auspices of [white] queerness & disability.
i am white (more or less) and queer and disabled & attended shitty schools in de facto segregated areas, i have encountered these ppl all my life, and what has always struck me as bizarre and embarrassing is the sheer ease with which alternate forms of info were accessible. all you needed was an internet connection, which we almost uniformly had. i found information about whiteness & intersectionality & colonialism & empire as a preteen through blogs and tumblr and other social media, and when i got older, followed my curiosity to actual books on these topics and more. it did not require anything exceptional, or even a higher education.
people know these resources are there. they know how to find them, in no more clicks than it takes to get to their favorite show or fanfic or whatever. but the discomfort that encountering new info requires, the embrace of the unknown, the genuine intellectual & emotional engagement with difference and friction, is something that they deep down know that "we" (in the global north/west) have the privilege to refuse. and there is a horrible "pleasure" in that refusal, that knowledge that one is permited to know nothing and still have the world at one's feet. it is despicable and inexcusable, and i'm glad it is getting vocally called out.

Hey, also, all the anarchist shit aside, tomorrow I want you to make something.
I forced myself to draw something after the 2016 election. I forced myself to draw something when my mother died in 2018. I forced myself to draw something when my spouse was hospitalized for multiple organ failure in 2021.
When you are miserable, make something. Add a row to your project, bake a box cake, draw on a sheet of lined paper, write a poem on a napkin, fold an origami shirt out of a dollar bill, make your favorite recipe for dinner, but make something with your hands, something that you can hold and look at engage your senses in.
It won't fix the world, but it will change the world. You will have made something that didn't exist before. You will have impacted your reality, even in a very small way. And it is going to be something you made *after.* Something bad happened, something shook you, and you made something after, in spite of it.

Meet the Mona Lisa of the Prado, the earliest known copy of Da Vinci’s best portrait. Similarity in the undersketch of the painting indicates that this was very likely painted concurrently with the original Mona Lisa, by a student of Da Vinci.
There is much controversy in the art world over the question of whether or not to clean the fragile Mona Lisa, but her sister has been restored and some fairly odd later alterations removed to show the original vibrant colors and lighting. Some details, such as the sheerness of her shawl and the pattern on the neckline of her dress, have become utterly obscured in the original, but in the restored copy they’re perfectly clear.
It blows my mind a little bit to look at these two sisters side-by-side and imagine how much vivid detail could be hiding in the Mona Lisa under 500 years of rotten varnish.

BTW today I met a person who's at least 50, uses they/it pronouns, and named themself Wyvern. It looks like if Santa was a biker and it plays D&D at the local library. Just a reminder that you can do whatever you want, forever.

For those not tapped into Australian politics, King Charles is in Australia to conduct his "historic first tour to the commonwealth realm" i.e visting countries that King Charles is supposedly a monarch to.
Indigenous senator Lidia Thorpe had requested an audience with King Charles for weeks prior to this visit, she wrote countless letters to speak to him. Unlike other commonwealth nations and other former Brisitish colonies, a treaty with Indigenous peoples in Australia was never formed. Their land was never ceded to the British Crown. After being denied and ignored, Lidia Thorpe, draped in a traditional possum skin cloak, stormed in the Great Hall during the reception for Charles at Parliament House in the capital shouting the following:
I literally can't even look at these photos without getting goosebumps.
