And according to her husband, she was always true to herself. “Over 38 years I have participated in her life 24 hours a day through thick and thin, traumatic situations, exultant situations, and I feel she has only one personality. She would be catastrophic for the psychiatric profession. You can wake her up in the middle of the night and she has the same personality everybody knows. What everybody has seen for 60 years is the bedrock.” (x)
Shirley Temple is hands down the most legendary child star of all time and she grew up to be a total BAMF. Rest in peace, Curly Top.

Setsubun has just started in Japan!
Setsubun is a winter festival for dealing with evil spirits and bringing some luck for the New Year. During Setsubun people take part in “obake” - literally “a ghost” but also “a disguise”. This is just a dressing up as various characters just like they do for Halloween.
Geiko and maiko dress up, too! Maiko usually style their hair in unusual and ancient hairstyles (i.e. osome mage, suisha, oshiyun, hime etc.) and often wear kimono in hime (“princess”) style ^^ Geiko, on the other hand, dress up as whoever they want to - movie stars, historical figures, even… men! They perform funny mini skits at every ozashiki and gain free drinks afterwards.
During the day people gather at the Yasaka Shrine to watch maiko performing special dances and throwing lucky beans into the crowd.
Today, maiko from Pontocho and Miyagawacho appeared on the stage. What is interesting, Miyagawacho maiko always dress up very formally for this event - black crested kimono and yakko shimada hairstyles just like for the New Year celebrations.
