“She was a genius of sadness, immersing herself in it, separating its numerous strands, appreciating its subtle nuances. She was a prism through which sadness could be divided into its infinite spectrum.”

About
Name: Katarina Reyes Age: 23 Hometown: Havana, Cuba Current Location: Gallow Hill Occupation: Cocktail Waitress at The Chapter Room
Biography:
Born into the slums of Havana to a mother who was practically a child herself, Valentina Rubio grew up without any kind of love. Abandoned, she was forced into an orphanage that was a worse extension of her former life. Mismanaged and underfunded, children were left to fend for themselves with a lack of food, beds, blankets, and any kind of support. Unknown to her, the orphanage sold child brides to the highest bidder and, at fifteen, she was sold to Diego Ramos. One of the most powerful men in Havana, the promise of his reaches had her hopeful for a new life. Diego didn’t want a wife, he wanted a slave. He kept her under lock and key, setting strict rules for her and expectations that she had to follow. At first, she didn’t mind them. They had a beautiful home, she never had to worry about having food to eat and she believed that they would learn to care for one another. Sure, he wasn’t kind to her but she figured he was trying to encourage her to become a good wife. With no male authority in her life, she kept hoping that if she could just be a good wife, he would take care of her and love her. Love was something she’d never had and she craved it desperately. His ties to La Corporación would lead him and his new bride to Miami by her eighteenth birthday. As soon as they moved to the United States, his abuse increased and he arrived home drunk or high more often than not. The situation came to a head when she began to fear for her life. Night after night, she’d wish for death over her husband's abuse and mistreatment. Until she couldn’t take it anymore. Out of desperation, she began to plot the best way to murder her husband. She waited until she had the right opportunity and she took it. Then, she packed a bag and left without looking back. Taking all the money she could, she took the first way out she could, ending up in Salem, Massachusetts. She was quick to change her name, cut ties to her past and try to find a way to settle in her new home. The first step was securing a job as a cocktail waitress at The Chapter Room but don't be fooled by her smiling face, it is hiding more than you could ever know. Though she lives with her sins and fears that it will all catch up to her, she had to become someone else entirely. So she did.

“The feeling that she had never really lived in this world caught her by surprise. It was a fact. She had never lived. Even as a child, as far back as she could remember, she had done nothing but endure.”
— Han Kang, from The Vegetarian [translated by Deborah Smith]

“I will not have you without the darkness that hides within you. I will not let you have me without the madness that makes me. If our demons cannot dance, neither can we.”
