Oh, right. I made a podcast.
Tumblr media
A Kujicast, in fact!
I’ve never posted about it here but a couple years ago my friend Fey and I started a podcast centered on the Kuji bros. Because they have enough going on to warrant an entire podcast centered around them. So far we’ve discussed topics like Chikai/Kazuki parallels, the state of Japan’s housing market, BABY COW TOOI-CHA, and lollipop symbolism! We’re currently on hiatus but you never know when we might make a comeback 👁👁

Just like I did with the ending, I took a crack at making singable lyrics for the Sarazanmai opening!
Lyrics below the cut:
Deep in the back of our minds, in a place nobody can find Voices faded, left behind, no one can hear us cry But from the worst of our days, it's a place where we run away Hoping maybe we won't be torn apart by the pain
Even if you feel unheard, if you're all alone I can still hear your heart calling to me Your desire overflowing!
But if we meet again, or even speak again I know we can connect!
If you drift away, I know I can reconnect with you! I won't give up on these feelings I thought I never knew! From the end and to the start I'll scream it from the bottom of my heart I want to connect with you, so...

Just for funsies, as an aside for a dumb project that I put too much effort into, I took a crack at making singable English lyrics for the Sarazanmai ending! I’m far from a lyricist but... my GOD I did my best!
Lyrics below the cut:
STAND BY ME Oh, would you please? Then maybe, then maybe I could be the one protecting Is it rain, or is it my tears running down my face? Make them disappear, with your warm embrace
Empty streets hide away a tired but shining light No one seems to notice when it burns by the next night Reminds me of the two of us on that day We let go of eachother's hands and went our separate ways
Now I'm sitting all alone, the good days never seem to last Wishing you would come back...
STAND BY ME Oh, would you please? Then maybe, then maybe I could be the one protecting When you're gone, this hand of mine is left empty and cold But the love you gave to me, I swear I'll never let go
STAND BY YOU Oh, if I could! Throw away everything, all I'm left with is you and me Is it rain, or is it my tears running down my face? Make them disappear, with your warm embrace Is that okay?

Hasty Translation Snippet - Nobuyuki Takeuchi on “Regret” in episode 9 of Sarazanmai (Pash! 09/2019)
(This is only part 7 of a 12 part interview. If I’ve translated other parts, they’ll be linked on my translations page.)
Tumblr media
Toi Finally Sees his Brother’s True Colors
The scenario originally began with Chikai collapsed on the boat. But, since I wanted to show he was still alive, he had to stumble towards that point.
Toi was always determined to stay with his brother, but he could never grasp Chikai’s true intentions. I wondered if, through that scene, Toi finally realized what Chikai truly wanted for him. The tears running down Toi’s cheeks were ones of regret— regret that he didn’t figure it out until it was too late.
That last “Fuck...!” Toi screamed was not towards who shot Chikai. It was aimed at himself.

Hasty Translation Snippet - Nobuyuki Takeuchi on “Restraint” in episode 9 of Sarazanmai (Pash! 09/2019)
(This is only part 6 of a 12 part interview. I might translate more in the future, but for now I was particularly curious about this bit.)
Tumblr media
For the ninth dish, each character showed “restraint” in some way. That restraint was symbolized in the way they tightly grasped something. For Kazuki, it was the water bottle; for Toi, the plastic bag; for Reo, his own chest.
To convey Toi's desperation after losing his brother, I asked Director Ikuhara if I could extend the final scene with a flashback. The flashback sequence was an homage to the ending of The Godfather Part III. The music we used was a piano cover of the song used in that scene— the intermezzo from Pietro Mascagni’s opera, Cavalleria Rusticana. There was also a visual homage to the Ken and Mary advertising campaign for the Nissan Skyline C110 from 1972, in which Ken became Chikai and Mary became Toi.
The audience can take away what they want from this scene, but in my case, I think instead of Toi seeing the imagery through his mind’s eye, it was shown to him by some sort of muse…
Sorry, it’s hard to explain.
