The dragons weren’t just her children, they were the living hearts of those she had loved. She would be happy to speak of their names and who their namesakes were but she didn’t want to go into too many details regarding the circumstances that led to her children being born, certainly not with someone unknown to her, someone with the potential to become either for or friend. 

“My children were given to me as a gift on my wedding day and they were born in flames, as was I.” Dany felt that this was the most appropriate explanation to give and it removed some of the more distressing elements of the tale. No one but her would have cared about the loss of her son and the Kahl who had given him to her. 

“War truly touches us all. There can be no safety while unworthy hands compete for the throne that was destined for only one.” Dany empathised with the difficulties that the people would have suffered and she could understand the sorrow that Brienne’s father probably felt. Loss was something she was intimately familiar with. 

“I did not live in exile, I was forced into exile. I was protected as best as I could be by my brother but it was a terrible existence. We were punished for the crimes of my father, young children suffered because people we had never met assumed that we would drown the lands in blood. Do you find this to be fair?” Dany’s voice had grown an octave as her temper slowly reared it’s head. She was bitter about all that had happened and she wouldn’t be able to forgive the houses that had forced her into such misery; Baratheon, Lannister and Stark.

Brienne was the sort of woman that Dany felt was desperately needed in Westeros. From what she had heard she was loyal perhaps almost to a fault. Dany was in short supply of loyalty from the people of Westeros. Essos was another matter but even then there had been difficulties but she had overcome them. She had broken the chains of slavery and empowered every man and woman to make their own choices, perhaps not always to the benefit of others unfortunately.

“What do you think of my dragons?” She asked, noticing that Brienne had followed her gaze to the sky. Everytime that she looked at them, Dany’s heart swelled with a mixture of pride, joy and sorrow in equal measure. They were a reminder of all she had gained and all she had lost.

“I am keenly familiar with loss but that is not uncommon in Essos.” She replied, basing her statement on what she knew best. Westeros was her birth rite but that did not make it so well known to her.

“If a woman were to murder twenty men to protect her child, would her purity be called into question?” Dany’s response was intended to encourage Brienne to think deeply. Issues of morality would always make for fascinating discussion and the sooner a woman understood the nature of the people around her, the easier she would find it to survive and prosper not merely in material riches but in spiritual too.

“What do you know of your history regarding my family Brienne? I know that many stories, will have been told about my father and Rhaegar but what of my brother and I?”

“Magnificent,” she breathed, glancing up at them again. It was hard not to. They drew the eye. “I’ve seen pictures, of course, and heard of them in songs, but it’s nothing like seeing the real thing. Everyone thought dragons to be extinct. What happened?” Brienne had heard it said that the reappearance of dragons signaled the return of magic to the world. She didn’t doubt that- she’d seen magic herself. As long as she and Daenerys were on the same side, she preferred dragons. 

“I wish I could tell you that Westeros was any better. Tarth, where I come from… it’s a beautiful island, peaceful and lush, but my father has lost nearly everyone. Even staying out of the war can’t keep you safe.” Once, in Evenfall Hall’s library, she’d read a book of philosophy that said to love others was only setting yourself up to get your heart broken. She had hated that book, and she’d pushed it as far back on the shelf as it would go. 

“Not if it were necessary. Some would use a noble cause as an excuse to commit atrocities.” Brienne bit her lip. “But I take your point, Your Grace. There are circumstances, if rare, when there is a justification for a deed that would otherwise be unthinkable.”

She shook her head. “I know very little. Only what everyone else knows about you. You lived in exile, you were sold to a Dothraki horse lord, but he died, and so did your brother. And you brought dragons back into the world… That’s about it.”
