"THE SETBACK OF PIRACY"
WHERE do pirated contents bring us? Have you ever wondered how quite rampant piracy is in the Philippines? Specifically, here in Cagayan de Oro City beside the streets of Cogon and elsewhere? I bet you would know it existed.
According to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary, piracy is defined as an illegal act of copying someone’s product without permission from the owners. Or in other words, what we do in the daily basis that we think is just normal just like easily downloading a movie content from the Internet using another website because we knew that we have to pay otherwise is piracy itself. Think of it as somehow, a plagiarism in comparison, sort of way.
Truth is, piracy is a very major problem in the Philippines, in a developing country like ours and even in any other country. Yes, I say it right, a major problem but only for those who are concerned with this disregarded issue of modern society. The fact that we see how unproblematic and public the vendors are when selling pirated DVDs in our public market and knowing that those are pirated just by looking at the plastics and the low quality prints and knowing that they are sold in the market with no hassle and fear that they might get detained from their illegal selling of copyrighted contents put us to the conclusion from these propositions that indeed, piracy is undermined here in our country, and worst, has become a norm. Some just really do undermine the fact that copyright owners are the ones being attacked and scathed here. All others thought is the benefit and the enjoyment they could get from doing it in a wrongful way. Some do it on purpose and some may be uninformed of this issue which is something I have doubted considering the fact that we live in the realms of a digital world. But one thing is for certain, that piracy has put dangers and harm to those who are legal copyright owners of movies and music. First, selling pirated copies like DVDs we see in the market of Cogon worth way cheaper than the amount it used to be bring harm to the authorized ones by decreasing the sales of the content owners. Owners of such contents produce such things not only to bring entertainment to the audience but to produce back the money spent from that content and eventually gaining profit from it. So to put in a blatant way, illegal selling is basically stealing the content to gain profit out of it for your own sake. Second, any forms of piracy are a threat both from the industry and yourself. The problem with the piracy is that not only are you putting yourself in danger from breaking the laws mandated by the government but also expose yourself from software issues. On the other hand, piracy is a threat to the content creators in such a way that they weren’t able to reach their target and success at whatever nature it may be. Lastly, piracy is a moral issue. Knowing that the ones harmed are the one that aren’t benefited and the ones who are harming are the ones who are benefited justified the sense that piracy is immoral and unethical. The problem in this world is that the access to the Internet has created more spaces to those who are planning for piracy at their own expenses. Not only that, people have been unethical and indifferent with this issue that they think that it is not wrong for them to illegally copy a content without permission. Above all, one thing is important- that creating a face with this issue, raising awareness with it to the national level, and stringently implementing the rules and laws of the government about this matter are what we need to eradicate the setbacks of piracy and give justice to the authority that piracy is considered a criminal offense, a theft case, and an unforgivable norm!

“Understanding the Relevance of Information Literacy in the Midst of Social Era”
To be an information literate doesn't only end to its scholarly definition of just "being able to read and write" information but rather more than that is given. Information literacy is being able to not only understand information but polishing everything inside it- from questioning the information to critically analyzing the impact it can bring to the exposed audience or mass. This generation nowadays is undeniably technologically-inclined and socially-driven. We live in a generation where everything is such an ease to the point that grabbing and taking in information from a source or outlet have become such easier and faster than what the other generations had undergone. Social era is defined as an era itself which means that the remark and impact the media and social platforms have on us are undeniably remarkable that it could possibly last in eras or even speaking, much more advanced and manipulative. Basically speaking, this Social era involves broad and wide range of information. It would be unbelievable for someone to say that information is not a part of his everyday life. We basically get used to updating ourselves with information revolving all over the media outlets and social platforms- from newspapers to books to our phone ran by Internet, no doubt we are surrounded by words and thoughts. The consideration that gadgets and technological inventions have been a part of one's basic necessities for survival in this era of modernized world and the fact that the Internet has bring forth speed in terms of spreading information have made everyone's life updated with almost everything that is trending, controversial, and political.
Relevance is somehow sort of a connection and therefore, that being said, the importance of being an information literate is of such purposes. Upon glancing information, just starting everything with questions like "who created this", "what is this info about", "what exactly is the message behind it", and the likes is information literacy itself. Critical thinking, it is. In this social era, information literacy is very relevant to it. Media outlets and social platforms do provide benefits but often times, they are manipulatively used by threatening users for negatives and to spread unnecessary information. The degree that information literacy is important to avoid being in danger, get swayed, be in the verge of threats, abuse, misinformation and disinformation is what we need badly to keep in mind. We have witnessed so many people being victims of social abuse, child pornography, deaths, etc. because of should we say, the ignorant and misuse of media which cannot be denied by the rampant repercussions of era of media and that is exactly what we are trying to decipher here- that information literacy gives us the safe zone that we need, away from such danger. Thus, by that, if we could get to apply information literacy within ourselves or be information literates ourselves, by that, this paves the way for a safer community of information seeking, media enjoyment, and mass collaboration for a more educated discourse.

"Media and Government: A Love-Hate Relationship"
Media changed us. Media brought us an easier way to to create and share information to the government. The government use media as their medium to disseminate information using any social media platforms. Social media became popular and even children can utilize internet. Media helped politicians to win through advertising in television and on any online platforms of media by paying the cost.
Literally speaking, this picture shows a political candidate riding in a some sort of "fuel-less" vehicle being carried by three biggest social media platforms namely the Youtube, Facebook and Twitter on his way to a certain area, the same direction that the signage "election" is pointing towards. If we are going to analyze the context or the deep meaning behind what is exactly portrayed in the picture alone, it shows how the social media have impacted and become the major driving force of the world of politics and of the election. It denotes how social media can be of a great tool to showcase and spread the plans of a certain political candidate on his locality for where he runs. Obviously, if we were to analyze more, we can depict that there is no other factor shown here that can help the candidate greatly but the social media. This basically means that media serve as the main force to influence the people and get their trust for him. Social media allow things to spread easily with just a blink of an eye. This picture doesn't show any other depiction except it. Intention wise, the political candidate seems to have a joyful response as he is being carried up higher by his driving forces. We couldn't really depict what the candidate really intends with his joyful face but one thing to another, there is only one message behind this picture itself- that social media are of great importance to the world of election.

THE VALUE OF MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERATE INDIVIDUAL
Media? Information? Literacy? Three words and put them all together in a statement. How media and information literate are you? Do questions arise when you are scrutinizing right upon scrolling through your computer? The advent of technology and the prevalent use of media, not mentioning the information you can dive right into it, have been a trend in this generation of millennials. We cannot deny the fact that Filipinos are, if not, the most active users spending an average time of about ten hours per day. As we are currently challenged by this pandemic and for the past five months of class suspension, our knowledge and literacy as to how to use media cautiously have been tested. Lots of fake news, misinformation, death threats, disrespectful memes and malicious contents have been messed up all over the Internet and users, many of them, are not being very cautious of what they are sharing. That being said, anyone who has been able to question, analyze, interpret, and make constructive analysis, criticism and informed judgement is someone who can be tagged as media and information literate individual.
But what exactly is the value of an MIL individual? A Media and Information literate individual has come way more knowledgeable than other typical users, spanning from his carefulness to media to his awareness to harm and danger an action in media may bring. His usefulness allow himself to share information and news that are beneficial and useful to the part of those who surround him and are referring to his shared contents. His usefulness allows others to read and view authentic and reliable contents and information. He is someone who does not bring harm, threats, and misinformation to other naïve users, who is critical of media and by that, he has gained the trust and respect from people in social media platforms. Most importantly, he doesn’t partake to those who are creating serious clouts especially in this challenging time of pandemic. To mean by that, take for an instance, the rampant spread of misinformation and disinformation about COVID-19 puts burden to people by affecting their psychological stability, creating false hopes, arising fear, and impacting people negatively- and that is exactly the opposite of a media and information literate individual and his undeniable value sums up everything that he, himself, is beneficial at all corners and scope of media and information.
