Putting it simply, I am obsessed with the inherent, near-endearing patheticness of Stede Bonnet. I love that disaster follows him, I love that he runs head-first into bullshit yet has the balls to act shocked when he ends up in ridiculous scenarios. I am utterly entranced by how in spite of the loveless life he endured for decades, he remains enthralled by trinkets and stories and the simple act of having hope. That he has the ridiculous confidence to walk into Spanish Jackie's wearing a flamboyant, crisp white outfit (introduced via an equally flamboyant, near painful rhyme) yet lacks the confidence to believe that he could ever be loved, love others, or simply inspire happiness. I love the fact that while running away to be a pirate was his bid at a new beginning- his obscure dream- he wanted it to be a safe space for his crew, too. How ridiculous to apply those bizarre, novel concepts of pirating to a crew who just wanted to pillage and slay- to combine their wishes with his stubborn belief that pirating doesn't have to be an abusive, loveless space. I find such amazement in his ridiculous tale of misguided actions and misplaced hope. The simple joy in the exhaustive journey of living authentically.

Hey peeps! I had an artist friend ask me to do a reference sheet of some torso shapes that the characters of OFMD have! I did not manage to draw them all yet, but if you are an artist, this might be useful...specially if you are used to do just "super hero" body types. So I'm sharing!

My goal with this sheet is not to show a super realistic version of the body type, but simple linework that can suggest the body type effectively, if you want to translate that in your art.

-Edward has a standard lean torso, but one thing you might feel compelled to to is to define all of the muscles, but it's not necessary! He has fat in his body, so the tummy muscles are not defined as we see in super hero movies. You can pay more attention in the shoulders and chest area, that are a bit more defined, but no need to exagerate on that either. Avoid the ultimate "dorito" shape, but in some cartoon styles it might work regardless.

-Stede has a torso that I define as a "box" shape. The difference between his waist and his shoulders are less apparent than what you might feel compelled to do (the dorito shape). He also does not have defined muscles, but the shoulders are very elegant so you can put some definiton there, and around the clavicle!

-Buttons also has a more squared shape. While Ed is lean, Buttons is effectively thin, with some local fat specially in the tummy and chest area. Avoid broad shoulders in this case, but you can define some of the muscles, specially in the thin areas, like his arms

-Oluwande's body type is high on fat, so you can apply more defined lines in his silhouette while keeping the inner lines less proeminent, to translate the idea of softness. If you are not used to drawing bigger body types, start by exagerating the features and tone it down until you feel like it's enough, to avoid making the character look thinner than he is.

This is an anti-creampuff-ification of Stede Bonnet account. Yes, he is nice but Stede is also insane. He clearly has the eyes of a madman. The most fearsome pirate that ever lived is his soulmate and he regularly impresses this guy with how unhinged he can be. He reads bedtime stories to bloodthirsty pirates, among whom is one who openly talks about his cannibalistic inclinations. Another of his crew was raised by a murderous nun to be god’s perfect killing machine. This is Stede’s found family and he is perfectly aware of these facts about them. Stede ran himself through on Izzy Hand’s sword to win a duel and he smirked as he manipulated a bunch of poncy nobles into setting their own ship on fire. He felt completely at home in Spanish Jackie’s bar until they actively attacked him to get him to leave and he screamed FUCK at the top of his lungs while trying to find the right inspiration to scare the shit out of a bunch of Dutch merchants then SUCCEEDED at scaring the everloving shit out of Blackbeard accidentally in the process. His only notes on Blackbeard’s crew going on a murder spree to demonstrate how to capture a ship was to appreciate their gusto and the efficiency of not missing the chance to rip the gold teeth out of a dead man’s mouth.

And yes, this is the same man who thought making a turtle fight a crab was mean, because he has standards. Very, very unhinged standards. He is a walking contradiction of genteel upbringing and an unabashed craving for a violent life of crime, like a duck raised by chickens discovering the water. All in all, I find this very sexy of him and in the privacy of my brain I will be fighting to the death anyone who tries to morph him into a sweet inoffensive cinnamon bun who is too good for this world, too pure.

this is huge. don’t get me wrong, both shows are amazing and I know it’s not a competition, but the fact a show with queer romance as its main storyline, that hardly got any promo from HBO Max, managed to top a big Disney/Marvel show proved people want actual LGBTQ representations that couldn’t be edited out or completely dismissed by skipping 6 seconds forward.
