Blog Post #15
Wow! My last blog post for class! It’s crazy to think that each week I’ve been posting stuff each week all semester, it’s flown by honestly. But for my last blog post I’d like to reflect on how this class went for me. I actually really liked this class. I thought it was very hands on which helped me learn a lot. I never really knew how to create links or QR codes before this class and now I do which is super helpful. For our final project we have to pick 3 media platforms to use. I’m going to use Instagram, Tumblr and a podcast. I’m going to be talking about a music festival I’m going to for New Years. My blog post is going to be about the history of the event, my Instagram post is going to be a poster like picture highlighting the festival and my podcast is me talking about the event and all of the DJs and stuff like that. It’s been a great semester!

I’m currently freaking out all the work I have to do to finish up this semester. For our final in class we have to put our skills together that we’ve been working on all semester. We’ve gone through ever social media platform and learned the main components of each.
For our final we have to use three separate platforms. We can chose from a stand alone video, stand alone audio, Instagram or Facebook, a blog post, or you can use any other printed media using any elements such as QR codes. I’m not sure what three platforms I’m going to use so I better figure it out soon!

So, as break rapidly approached I started to notice how different social media was during the holidays. It’s still super crazy to me how much social media can influence so many people! I started watching live videos on Facebook and Instagram more and it’s interesting to see what people are comfortable to put online.
In class we talked about a media platform called, Twitch. My boyfriend was asking me how to use it but we didn’t get the chance to see in class. I think it’s a site for gamers to stream live, which would help out my boyfriend a lot because he loves playing video games!

Going live on social media can mean two different things, posting content while it happens or posting live video content. In class this week we started talking about airing live videos on different social media platforms. We talked about Facebook, Instagram and Twitter the most. I actually didn’t know that twitter had live video, which is called Periscope. In my opinion, Facebook live and live video on Instagram are the two ways i look at live feed the most. I think that Twitter is mainly used for just tweeting text instead of live video. A lot of times i think that live video is a good idea because it can give insight to what’s happening outside of your area. For example, with all the police brutality protests there were many live videos being shown on Facebook for the world to see and people were able to get a closer look at what was happening in those cities. I also think there can be a couple cons to live video. I think that it is easy to misinterpret what is actually going on in the live video because users can turn off the live video whenever they would like, making it easier to assume what happened with the rest of the “story”. I’ve tried using live video on Instagram and it was cool because you could see everyone’s comments as the video was happening and because the app made it very easy to do live video.

So this weeks assignment was to make a couple vlogs and post them on YouTube. Well, I did my vlog on weed and wine. As cool as that sounds, I wasn’t sure if I should post them or not because of the content. The content is illegal in some states but in the state I live in, it’s legal. Everyone is 21 in my videos also, so it’s especially ok for us to be doing that. I was hesitant to post them because one, it’s a class assignment and I wasn’t sure if my teacher would be ok with it, second I wasn’t sure if YouTube would take it down. Also, the guys that are in the videos are on the school swim team so putting that it with them in it is risky.
Personally, I really like the vlogs that I made because it’s things that I’m interested in and my friends also had a good time doing them. It’s crazy to me because I’ve never really actually stopped and thought about what I’m watching on YouTube or Facebook or Twitter until I had to post my own videos with my own content. People put some weird sh*t online, it kind of surprises me.

YOUTUBE! I’m excited to be working with YouTube because I’m not too familiar with it. For class we have to make a couple vlogs which is perfect because I love blogging and I think vlogging is the same thing except it’s in real life! This is a perfect time for me to vlog about different wines that I like to drink and review them. Because I’m also a marijuana enthusiast, I would like to vlog about the different types of strains that I like and also about the Hemper box that I get every month. The Hemper box is a monthly subscription that I get that sends me a little box full of different marijuana related items such as a glass piece, rolling papers, air fresheners and grinders.
I’m excited to use YouTube because it has revolutionized media. You can literally look up anything on YouTube. From music videos to how to videos, you can see it all. YouTube also allows for people who are interested in becoming well known for their media to become exposed.

They need QR codes to add people on Tumblr, wouldn’t that be a good idea?! Snapchat has already adding that feature to their app and it’s sooo convenient! Blogs are a lot more personal but if you want a public blog to be followed I think you should be allowed to scan a QR code to easily follow someone you meet.
Personally, I haven’t used many QR codes in my life however, when I have they have been very useful. I’ve used QR codes to get sale deals at stores, Snapchat to add friends, and a QR code simply to figure out information on a club at school. More times than not I think people won’t use QR codes because they don’t know how or because they don’t know what it is. Everyone should know what a QR code is and what it can do!

Blog Post #8
So this has been one of my favorite weeks in class because we’ve talked about Snapchat! I love Snapchat. It allows me to stay connected with my friends in a quick and easy way. I’ve noticed people who use Snapchat as a main source of communication. A lot of times people like Snapchat because they can see what other people are doing. People are always interested in what others are doing whether that be their favorite movie star or their crush from down the street.
I’m not sure if Snapchat and instagram have made it more of a problem that people need to be concerned with other people’s lives so much, however, I also see benefits. A feature in Snapchat is the maps. It allows you to see where people are and you can click on a story posted all around the world to see what’s happening in that area. This feature was used during the hurricane when it hit Texas and it allowed people to see if people were in danger or on the spot news resource. Snapchat is definitely one of my favorite apps for sure.

Yes, Instagram! One of my favorite social media platforms, besides tumblr of course. I personally love pictures so I love talking about Instagram. There’s so many different tools on IG that allows people to share what they’re doing. In class we had to pick something to put on our story and I took a picture of the Escalante Hall sign because that is where my classroom is. I think IG stories are unique because you can have the boomerang affect and if used correctly it can come out pretty cool. I also learned that the right amount of hashtags for a post on IG is 11, which I had no idea about. I’m excited to continue to talk about Instagram because I think it can be a really useful app.

Blog Post #6
As we've been talking about Facebook in class it has brought my awareness even more to how much social media has an influence on people. Not only are we focusing on Facebook we're now starting to focus on Twitter. This blog being about EDM culture, I am very excited to start relating my blog to Twitter because A LOT of EDM news and commutation goes on through Twitter. It's fast and easy and not to mention you can only use a certain amount of characters which forces the publisher to only publish the most important information. Personally, a lot of concert information and ticket giveaways are to my knowledge because of how many people you can follow from a certain time of community. I use twitter a lot more than Facebook and I personally like to use it to express my feelings or opinions toward a certain topic.
I've met a lot of people just because of Twitter. Facebook has allowed me to keep a connection with more professional people in my life such as family or professors whereas Twitter allows me to connect with people who relate to me on another level of aspirations.

Facebook; More Than Just an App
Communication. It is so important for many reasons. Being a mass communications student you always have to be prepared to work with others and to do so there has to be communication amongst your classmates/coworkers. For the past couple of weeks we've been learning about Facebook and how well it can help connect and create certain groups. Our assignment this week is based on how well we can communicate as a class to design a Facebook group page. In order to make the class page look well we had to decide what the class thought was the best ideas for the design such as the profile picture and header picture. We all decided to take a class picture and put it as the header and it came out really well. This assignment, I believe, was designed to teach the class how it would be like working with a tea PR team.

Facebook has been the main platform for social media mediums. It has revolutionized how social media influences a mass group of people. Facebook is constantly trying to come up with new ideas but also including other features from other apps. Facebook is the oldest form of social media, yet is still the fastest growing app.
There are so many ways to connect through Facebook with chat, live video, a marketplace to be able to sell items with a Craigslist type of set up, live video and stories that people can post. People can use Facebook to connect with work or classroom groups, like our class is learning how to be a part of right now. There are many EDM Facebook groups I'm a part of that allows me to stay aware of upcoming concerts, kandi making parties and groups that allow people to carpool to concerts.
Personally, I don't post many things to Facebook because I feel like Facebook should be used for more important information, whereas Twitter is used more for fast information getting out. I use Facebook to stay in touch with my family and to post pictures.

Hard News Article
New Problems Arise for EDC As Kid Overdoses at Festival
This summer, many EDM festival goers attended one of the worlds greatest music festival, EDC-LV. EDC-LV is notorious for great DJ’s, the cutest rave outfits, having the best time with friends and of course the Las Vegas heat. Besides all the good things that come along with music festivals, not all stories come out the same.
EDC is being sued for a young adult who overdosed on an unknown substance. Police are reporting that it was some sort of ecstasy pill. The parents of the young adult explains to news reporters that the festival is not ideal for people who are in need of help. His father explained to LA Times that no one was there to help his son and before he got help it was too late. The maker of EDC, Pasquale Rotella, wants to make sure everyone knows that everyone is a priority at EDC and that reaponders get to distressed victims as soon as they can. There is an ongoing investigation on whether or not EDC will become liable.

The inverted pyramid. You hear that a lot as a mass communications student, however, many people use that same structure to write their blogs but may not know it. When you use the inverted pyramid, you're generally writing about the most newsworthy info (5 W's and How), then the important details and to end you have other general info or background info.
The inverted pyramid is important to use while writing a hard news story. You have to write a hard news story so the reader can stop at anytime but still have a gist of what the article is about. That's why the headline is so important. A hard news story are timely stories about events that have just happened or are about to happen. Related to my blog, EDC just came out with a huge news release revealing new aspects to EDC and even a date change which has never happened before.
It's important to keep aware of objectivity vs. opinion especially when writing about a hard news topic. Objectivity keeps journalists writing about facts whether or not they agree with them, which leaves the article unbiased.

What are the fundamentals of news writing? What is hyperlocal news? Those are a couple questions that were asked in class this week. As I sat there and thought about what the answers to those questions are the one thing I could think of is, the fundamentals to news writing is to start with good, accurate reporting. Anyone can report news but is it factual? Is it accurate? Is it bias?
Going along with good news reporting it had me thinking about what hyperlocal news actually meant and how important it is. Hyperlocal news is focused on covering smaller, local events. Hyperlocal news tends to focus on interaction with the reader instead of having a vague news story that may be for a wide variety of people to see.
With my blog, focusing on EDM, a lot of news that's on this subject is made for mainstream news instead of special interest publication. Concerts are promoted to a mass group of people so everyone is aware of it. Hyperlocal news can also be different than special interest publication because special interest publication deals with niches that are more specific to a topic.
