project proposals
1. My first idea for this project is to make a literary book of my own. (More of a novella). A few years ago, I had written a story for fun and never really did anything with it. I think this is a good opportunity to revisit that story, refine it and give it a new purpose. The story itself takes place on a different galaxy where two clans, selected by the Queen of the galaxy, go to war every year in hopes of becoming the only clan left on the galaxy alongside the queen. At the time, I created the story as a way of saying “Always question authority” and “Never do as you’re told without being able to ask questions.” So, in other words, seek knowledge instead of being blissfully blind and ignorant. Though I don’t know the exact number of pages my story will contain, I plan on having the book formatted like Livre de Poche, thus 14cm in length (when closed) and 21cm in height. As for width it does depends on how many pages my story ends up being. I do plan on printing it out if it is possible to do so. Essentially, it is a literary book, very easy to read (for those who enjoy reading). I would hope readers of this story take away the right message though that is much more in the literary department rather than the design department. There are a few models I’d try to follow, one of which being from our Making or Breaking the Grid (The Anatomy of Pages) otherwise, some pages within the story I’d like to do something like the author Irvin Welsh does in his book Filth, but pertaining to my story and how it would work. I think by adding eccentricities that regular literary books don’t usually have, it could help with visuals within the story or further pull readers into the story.
2. My second idea is to make a bestiary. An ancient looking scroll/book, like older handwritten scrolls, and on each page would be a different known mythical creature and a description of how they are. It would need research to get names and proprieties, but I would put in some false information that comes from my own imagination, thus showing how we may never know if any information we have on them is real due to the fact that they (the creatures) themselves may not be real (and we may never know if they are). Obviously, inspiration for this comes from myths and mythology, legends and folklore. I always like working with the unknown or myths and mythology because they are nothing but speculation, but they still hold such an important impact. For example, some people are still trying to find bigfoot or the abominable snowman even though we don’t know if they’re real. Some are afraid of swimming in the loch ness lake in Scotland because they’re afraid of the Loch Ness Monster (Nessie). As for format, it would be the size of regular printer paper, but all the pages are worn out/burnt and bound together with string, as if to give it an old abandoned or hidden relic type of look. The visual of the creature would be on one side of the book’s page and the other page next to it would be the description text. Essentially, what I’d want to communicate is how we are afraid of the unknown and no matter what description we get, we will still be afraid of them until we see them in action with an open mind to make sure they are harmless.

WRITTEN EXPLANATION
I’ve created a blueprint for a robotic eagle that attacks military drones as my redesign of nature. What inspired me was a segment that passed on the news that explained how some eagles are trained to attack enemy drones. Naturally, eagles on their own are quite a fearsome type of creature, but they are not born believing they must attack drones. With the blueprint, it shows that practically every part of the eagle has been re-purposed/re-engineered to benefit the “military”. Though it might look like a regular eagle on the outside, the “damaged” image that is in the top right or the blueprint shows it is completely robotic. Essentially, I think training any animal to do one’s bidding is in of itself a redesigning of nature. However, by making this eagle simply robotic enforces how it has been completely redesigned, thus taking life out of the animal entirely. It is to my belief that we should not remove life from existing animals (as we have been doing in some parts of the world) and train them to do our dirty work. Which is why in my blueprint I put in some ‘comical’ warning signs as to display the disability of trying to re-purpose a living creature. I also put it at the bottom right corner “V 2.0” like to say that the makers of the blueprint (not the actual maker of the blueprint, I am speaking hypothetically which would make the makers of the blueprint military officers) believe that animals who serve them are a new and improved version of the actual animal that serve no purpose to them. Right next to it, “surveillance and security for all” was to demonstrate that they see this as a purely good advancement for humanity rather than a selfish move on behalf of humanity. It is meant to have somewhat of a satirical feeling to it.

Camouflage insects seem to be some sort of amalgamation of plant and insect and it had me wondering what it would be like if something were genuinely part plant, part animal/insect. Somewhat made me think of a pokemon, in some way

When hearing about this, the fact that we’ve trained eagles to take down drones, it made me think of cyborgs or androids. Technically redesigning nature to do our bidding.

Inspiration for design font
The works I chose as inspiration for my font are two literary works (books) by two different authors, yet both of them contributed in their own way to my final though for my font. In general, I wanted my font to look like it belongs in the realm of fantasy, such as the universe of these books. The first book is named The Language of Thorns and it was written by Leigh Bardugo. It is composed of six short stories. Each page has an illustration (made by Sara Kipin) that builds slowly as the individual stories progress. The first short story’s illustration is what I used as my inspiration to begin my font. The cover of the book also has lovely illustrations on it that reflect the design of my font. Though the written content did have me in the right mindset to begin my font, The Language of Thorns was mainly a visual inspiration, somewhat of a drawing reference.
The second book I used as inspiration is titled The Shadow Queen, which was written by C.J. Redwine. The events of the book take place in a world of magic and fantasy, of queens and royalty. For the sake of context, the story follows a girl named Lorelai who was thought to be dead and is the rightful ere to the throne. She has with her, her brother and a few friends who she values very much, but as they move along to the castle they need to find food and such, so they stop at villages in order to stay alive. What inspired my font was a specific scene of chapter twelve (spoiler alert) in a village, the queen, Irina catches them and as they are trying to escape, she casts a spell in which black vines emerge from beneath the soil and through cobblestone to try and cage them in. In this scene only the main character and her brother are being chased by these vines. The chapter ends with the main character successfully getting loose of the vines grip, but her brother dies from them and she has to leave him there to slowly die. It’s a scene that was memorable and vivid in my mind which is why I wanted to illustrate it in my font.
