WHO issued an alert after the death of 66 children, told these 4 cough syrups to be deadly

 The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an alert on four cough and cold syrups in India. It is being told that 66 children died in The Gambia after drinking these cough syrups. It causes severe damage to the kidney. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has started its investigation regarding these cough syrups. WHO said, the four drugs are cough and cold syrups manufactured by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd in India. WHO is conducting further investigation with the company and regulatory authorities in India.

A source said, the CDSCO has initiated a probe into the matter and ordered a detailed investigation against the cough and cold syrups produced and exported by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd to The Gambia. According to the source, the global health body has been requested to share the report on establishing the cause of death along with the medical products involved with the CDSCO at the earliest.

Maiden Pharmaceuticals Limited is located in Sonipat, Haryana. CDSCO in collaboration with the State Drug Controller has launched a detailed investigation to find out the facts about the products. However, preliminary investigation has revealed that Maiden Pharmaceutical Ltd. is a manufacturer licensed by the State Drug Controller for the products, and has approval for these products.

Warning about these cough syrups

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said last day that it is linked to damage to the kidneys of four Indian cough syrups and the death of 66 children in The Gambia. As per the WHO alert, it has four products namely Promethazine Oral Solution, Cofaxmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Macoff Baby Cough Syrup and Magrip N Cold Syrup.

WHO did not tell the cause of death

In this case, the WHO has warned that the syrup may have been distributed outside the West African country, posing a global risk. However, even the WHO has not yet given the reasons for linking the death to cough syrup.
