Long Post Alert (MARCH 18, 2021)...

Dear Daddy, Happy Birthday to you! I love and miss you so much.😢💙 I know that it’s a bit selfish of me to wish that you were still here with us, but I do. I’m doing my best to move forward without being able to hug you anymore, call you anymore, FaceTime with you anymore for some of our fun, deep, and just chill conversations. Even those calls when we would just say nothing much at all but just hang on the call, I miss sigh.😔I miss that every day. It’s tough some days, but I know that you would want me to “keep on keepin’ on,” and “don’t worry about me. Focus on yourself, I want you to be happy, ok?” as you would often say to me. Wow, I hear your voice so clearly saying that even now!🥰☺️I’m convinced that you and momma repeated certain things intentionally so we would hear it vividly even when you weren’t around [a secret parental strategy huh?]. Today, unfortunately, is that day for us. I get it now. Thank you.❤️I promise you that I will keep going full-throttle just like you and momma taught us to.✊🏾💪🏾

I promise you that I will ALWAYS remember to laugh and smile as much as possible like you began telling me even more in recent years. I promise you that I will remember (and walk out) every single thing that you taught me about God, music, family, faith and my faith-walk, about how to treat others, how to live for God especially when no one's watching [so when they are watching they will see God’s reflection without having to open their Bibles]. I promise I will also remember everything that you taught me about how to treat my siblings/be there for them/be an example for them, and how to work hard (and navigate through life in general) with excellence, integrity, fairness, love, forgiveness compassion, and grace. I watched you do all of these things EXCEPTIONALLY well to the absolute best of your ability and against all odds.✊🏾💪🏾You never wavered, you never complained even though I’m certain that you were hurt deeply, felt betrayed a time or two, and even felt like giving up on people. Still, you remained constant through the leading of The Holy Spirit. I watched you my whole life until the very last moment of yours and can say with certainty that I’ve always been proud to be your daughter and to have part of your name.

I told you that many times. With that being said, knowing you named me and gave me that gift, makes me smile even bigger. Whenever I read or hear my name, I feel an even greater sense of pride in knowing that I carry you (and your legacy - me and my sibling's birthright) with me everywhere I go! I honor you this day and acknowledge that I proudly and boldly stand on your shoulders in my faith, in my musicianship & my writing/my career, and in life overall. I offer many thanks to you and mom for hoisting us five up selflessly [in so many ways] so that we can fly. Now with major boosts from you both, we can and will soar together/unified! We will continue to make you proud and to continue your legacies as we follow our own paths while also blazing MORE trails! You have two sons, one your namesake, yes. However, as your daughter, I feel honored to have been chosen by you to carry on a piece of yours and granddaddy’s name also. I will continue to love, respect, and honor you. You and mom made it very easy to love and to respect anyway because you were two of the best parents ever! You were two of the best people to ever live. EVER. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Doing & Winning in 2018!!!

We made it, everyone! It’s a blessing to be four whole days into this brand new year. It’s a fresh start in so many ways. Let’s make it count! I hope and pray that 2018 will be your best year yet. Make it the most productive, happy, and successful year you’ve ever had. I pray that this year you’ll be fortunate enough to travel to places you’ve never gone before, experience more happy/positive life-changing moments than you ever have before, experience growth and maturity in various areas of your life, accomplish at least three major tasks to propel you closer to your ultimate goals, live intentionally more, love unconditionally more, and laugh heartily more in 2018. Make it a point to get up and try this year. Take the first step toward your dreams, pray, listen for divine guidance, and step out on faith! God’s got you covered. He can’t fail. Therefore, you won’t. This is our year of WINNING! Not only that but in the words of gospel singer Jekalyn Carr (speak these words over yourself, your careers, your classes, your families, your goals, your hopes, your dreams, your money, your health, etc...), “It’s MY winning season... EVERYTHING attached to me WINS... I WILL WIN!!!”

My prayer is that everyone had the most amazing Christmas ever in 2017! I hope that it was filled with lots of laughter, family, friends, great food, and the creating of the most heart-warming memories. S & S for Animation Week 4

Pete and Dash: Cotton Candy, Mitts, and Fly Balls, an animated short where Pete, 10-years-old, African-American, shy, clumsy, and ambitious boy, who wears a green and yellow baseball uniform; sits on the bench as he watches the team practice. His eyes focus on the team captain’s every move. Pete exercises extreme patience and hope, as he awaits the arrival of his moment to shine.

I chose this pic because the boy in it represents the longing that Pete feels each day from wanting to be an active participant in his team’s baseball games. From the dugout, he watches the rest of the team contribute and improve in the sport that he loves tremendously. In fact, on a deeper level, it represents a longing felt by people to “play” their “games” of life. So, thinking in terms of a person’s life’s passion; it’s that thing where their hearts and lives reside and thrive the most. Therefore, until we are fully engaged in what we were born to do, we may never feel truly alive, happy, or like our best [most organic] selves. With that, determination and patience are two key elements in reaching our goals. Without them, people oftentimes give up, move too quickly or too slowly in the wrong [or even the correct] direction. Ultimately, moving leisurely or sometimes too soon could negatively affect the trajectory that was [tailor-made] for our specific journey/process. Because Pete embodies determination and patience, along with a true love of the game, he’s willing to go through the process no matter how difficult some days are. Or, how many times he has to sit and watch from the sidelines. Moreover, having a strong support system right there to keep his spirits up, to keep him focused, and to keep him practicing, proves extremely beneficial as well. Dash, who’s Pete’s 18-year-old, witty, loyal, and optimistic pet turtle, best friend, and mentor; understands that if you prepare yourself while you’re waiting; when your moment arrives to “get in the game,” you won’t have to prepare. You’ll already be ready. From Pete’s point-of-view, with child-like faith, he shows us how we all should go after our dreams…tenaciously.

“Mastery Journal Assignment" for EWS (Week 4)

This month has been exciting, scary, insightful and challenging. I have learned so much about myself as a writer. I began to develop a creative writing process that works well for me. Prior to this discovery, I found myself being frustrated more often than not because I had ideas in my mind but didn’t quite know how to express them clearly and concisely. I’m a work in progress as a writer as much as my script is. I learned to accept and embrace that fact and that it is ok. It’s not a flaw or a negative thing, but a positive thing. This acceptance of constantly evolving, writing, re-writing, working and re-working my scripts or myself has been liberating. In this liberation, I’ve experienced more growth. 

It was tricky at times finding ways to balance between staying true to my story by not changing it while at the same time applying useful feedback to it for the purpose of improvement and enhancement. Being able to accept both makes me a stronger writer. It is extremely important for writers to able to give and receive feedback without losing their own voice. In fact, it’s essential to the success and flow of the creative and development process. The difference this month from any other experiences that I’ve had as a writer was that I challenged myself to be more diverse in the kind of concepts I sought to develop. Before this month, I didn’t really picture myself as a writer on a major video game. Viewing YouTube videos of The Walking Dead video game process inspired me to see myself working on a cool project like that one day soon as well. 

Now, I’m excited at the thought of being a writer on a video game like The Walking Dead. I realized that the more I write and re-write, the more ideas pop in my head for other story concepts. I’ve found myself walking through the mall or a grocery store and seeing things differently; in a way that excites me and I can’t wait to get home to my computer to begin the next concept. It’s time-consuming. However, writing and music are the two professional forms of expression that I’m most passionate about. If I couldn’t do one or the other, I’d feel incomplete.

So, I definitely see myself making a living as a writer. With that, I’m applying for entry-level internships so that I’ll be able to study the inner-workings of the creative development process on the professional level more closely. Also, I’ve been reaching out more to professionals within the industry who I trust to read and offer feedback on my scripts. I’m also learning not to be afraid to speak up for myself and to ask the right people the right questions. Lastly, I’m preparing to enter some writing competitions because I feel that will help me to build a great diverse portfolio and will help force me to work under pressure and within specific time constraints.
